We rented the annex for my sisters wedding. Facility was clean and well maintained. The only issue is parking is limited.
Great stop on our tour of Savannah. Enjoy the tour of this civil right museum, it was dedicated to movement of Ga and Savannah but it was a great learning experience, had a lot of visual artifacts and pictures. It even have a video during of some civil rights activists from the past. You really get a true since of the past and being a part of the movement. Was unable to take photos of the inside, but the memories will last a lifetime.
Upon arriving with my fiance and our daughter, we were greeted by two extremely polite women. They made conversation while explaining small details about the museum. We were EXCITED.....Well, fast forward to us being directed to follow a gentleman. He showed us a documentary and showed us a couple exhibits before being blatantly rude and leaving us there dumbfounded. We had no idea how to get back downstairs! He rudely stated that he and an older couple were leaving with his hand blocking the entryway to the elevator. We left without seeing the whole museum because we were uncomfortable with the way we were treated. Will never visit while he is a tour guide again! The two stars are for the women by the way
Ive been to several civil rights museums in a lot of cities. This museum is the history of the civil rights in Savannah. It has 2 floors with quite a few class rooms with some history info on the walls. Check in was easy, the fee was $10pp. A history tour is included if wanted, I declined due to my time limits. I was only there for approx 45min. I thought it was a nice museum for school trips to get the basic knowledge of Savannah civil rights history. If you have any knowledge of the civil rights history in the south, this may be repeat information for you. Maybe if I would have taken the tour I would have learned something new. They do have a huge free parking lot, which is rare in Savannah
What an eye-opening experience!! I will never forget this museum and everyone should come and see this historical place. Im not a huge history buff, which attests to how well this facility kept my interest! It is handicap accessible (Elevators) and the staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable!! Thank you for making our trip an unforgettable one!Side note: There is an exhibit that allows you to sit and be served as a white person or a colored person of the 1960s,-such an emotional experience! Thats all Im going to say!
My husband and I were engaged in Savannah. For our 1 year anniversary, we decided to come back and spend sometime doing things other than eating and shopping. We went to the museum to see, learn, experience & we got so much more. What a realGem!! We are already looking forward to coming back!!
The most important place my kids has visited and enjoyed the information about Savannah... keep doing what you do and educate our people
It was a great experience learning about the civil rights movement here in Savannah. Roselyn (in the pic lifting my youngest) helped explain to my daughters what it meant to live in the Jim Crow South. Absolute love for this museum and all that it represents in our American history. Special love and thanks to the staff. (Hope I got her name right. If I didn’t, my apologies)
This was a really interesting museum, built in a former bank, in a kind of out-of-the-way location. It presents a nice blend of national and local aspects of the civil rights movement, with the emphasis clearly on the local, which was very interesting and new to all of us. The woman who took our admission payment also led us around the exhibits for a while and clearly had an in-depth knowledge of the history being presented there, then rounded us up to take us to the mini-theater for presentation of the 20-minute documentary film. The no photography rule was a minor annoyance since there were many memorable displays that we would have preferred to record and remember (and share). Overall, a very memorable and educational experience.
Really enjoyed my visit to the museum. Savannah is so rich in history. The tour guides were very informative. #black history#Ralphmarkgilbert#wwlaw#savannah
I experienced Jim Crow as a teen, when visiting Texas with my mother. At the Museum I learned how the people of Savannah boycotted certain stores adhering to Jim Crow laws of the time, for 15 months. An incredible sacrifice. So much information never televised. A must see for everyone!
This museum was great. Staff was very courteous and knowledgeable. Price is very reasonable too. Savannah has so much history and this place will help enlighten you. Would like to see the community do more funding to this museum and bring it to another level.
Great museum. Staff was knowledgeable and welcoming.
Visited with Freedom Trail tours. Always a great experience.
The education you receive here is mostly of events, persons and issues of Savannah during Reconstruction on through to the early 70s. However, there is connection and continuity with the national level of the Civil Rights movement that most of us learn and hear about. There are many inspiring and tragic stories that took place in Savannah and the city is where a lot of important ideas were born. You cannot help but be moved to anger, shame, empathy, brotherhood. There was and is a fight going on in our great nation. You can begin to learn of it here. Its not an expensive to tour. There are guides to get you started and many things to read and watch at your own pace. This is a self supporting museum so they suffer somewhat from not having funding to provide high tech displays. Still, they provide an excellent presentation of the history and for me its brought to life.I recommend seeing it if your in Savannah.
It was nice piece of black history in very historic Savannah. Id love to see more funding go into this place so they could continue to make upgrades and teach people about how things were. The staff was extremely polite during our visit. Price wasnt too bad either
What an experience!!! We learned so much about the African American contributions to Savannah and how all our lives were impacted. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable!!
Visited while doing the Freedom Tour ride. Very informative and great to see black history from a raw perspective. Highly recommended!!
Took 26 international students on Friday morning. The tour is very informative and the staff is extremely courteous. The history is rich and the displays are well kept. Recommended for any group looking for local civil rights insights!
Local history museums like this one help a visitor like me better understand the connections between the past and present. At this museum, the passionate locals of the staff really made the visit worthwhile.
Very informative and a great visual experience. Crazy that this era wasnt that long ago.
I loved this museum and so did my three and five year old boys. It was wonderful as were the people there. We were lucky enough to get a tour with a lovely group that was visiting that day. I highly recommend it. This was weeks ago and my boys still talk about it and how they are going to change the world. Love it.
Needs more love and help from the community. Great experience and very great price. More facts and attention grabbing details would push them up to the next level
Very well done display of West broad St impact on civil rights history in 1960s. Very friendly guide and informative documentary. 10 dollar fee.
I visited the Civil Rights museum this past weekend and was absolutely amazed by the history that was displayed. i had no idea of the rich history specifically of the civil rights movement that existed in Savannah. im shocked that all of the documentaries, television shows, movies, etc. that depicts the civil rights movement, Ive yet to see any information about the events that occurred in Savannah Ga. This begs the question, how can that be? Certainly an eye opener for me and the visit was well worth the trip.. Thank You!!
Very informative and eye opening. Friendly and engaging staff!
The tour was very rushed because it appears the guide wanted to idle and talk to other staff... Its better for a person to just do the tour on their own... Its a small museum with interesting exhibits and self explanatory...
My husband and decided to visit the museum on a Saturday morning. David our tour guide was amazing. He took you right back to a young person that was so full of ambition and hope for the future. I got emotional through the tour and video presentation. My mom was born and raise in Savannah and was part of the civil rights movement as a young person. She would talk with so much pride and admiration about Savannah and it great history. I remember as child going to then West Broad street that where a hub of African American businesses. David the Tour guide was amazing with description and narration of African American history very little known about .An amazing trip .
From the time we walked in until the time we left, we were learning. The staff was very pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable. One of the staff members, Angela Dorsey, went above and beyond to help us with an issue that we had and we are forever grateful. I am so glad that we had the opportunity to visit the museum and learn about some our history that is not normally taught in schools. The exhibits were thoughtful and insightful. The video was great also. Please keep up the good work.
Savannah is so much more than elegant old architecture, seafood and drinks! Very informative of Savannahs part in the National Civil Right Movement and history of the area. Our guide David was a wealth of knowledge and refreshingly passionate about the history. I came away knowing FACTS about history Ive been misinformed about all my life. Its a gem!
Great knowledge coming from our tour guide.
I Loved this Museum! Very informative and such a great experience for me and my family. We took our 2 girls and they loved it as well. Ms.Ronson was amazing at explaining and teaching us alot of history. I suggest coming here on your visit to Savannah its beautiful.
Learned so much here. Great books. Awesome exhibits and historians.
I really enjoyed my tour at the Civil rights museum. The staff were inviting and very informative. A nice tour spot when visiting Savannah. If you want authentic truth of how African -Americans were treated, and not white wash....take this tour. As well as a reasonable price...
Great museum. Lots of good exhibits, the staff was super friendly and professional. The exhibits are detailed and also provide the legal background for why segregation was so difficult in Georgia. The video on the top floor was great. It is full of excellent facts and interviews. It really put the civil rights movement on a more personal level. Great place to go, especially if you only have a couple hours to do something. It was totally worth going.
Interesting local and national history. Amazing hands on staff who were very personable and told additional stories. Would recommend
Well worth a visit. While the museum is small, slightly outside of the historic downtown and sadly poorly advertised on local tourist, it makes up with a professional courteous and helpful staff. The exhibit does a good job at chronicling Savannahs history of civil rights gains and NAACP leadership, which was largely non violent and thus eclipsed by the more publicized neighbors to the South and North. The museum is in the midst of a renovation which should improve upon its current set up
You dont know how important Savannah involvement in the Civil Rights Movement was until you visit the R.M.G.C. museum! A must see for all people!
Wonderful place to learn about African American history. There was a traveling Museum there when the family attended and it was excellent. Highly recommend!!
What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for with a very friendly and informed staff and thought-provoking, exemplary exhibits. I would recommend this to anyone looking to expand upon their knowledge of the civil rights movement, especially its history unique to Savannah.
Awesome Exhibits and Well Presented Information on Savannahs Civil Rights History...
Lots of great exhibits regarding the Civil rights movement in Savannah, GA.
I absolutely loved this stop on my stay in GA. Knowing your history is important and honestly, learning it from your own makes it better. Rosalyn was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and a delight. She was incredibly eager to share what she knows and make sure it was digested and taken with me as knowledge that cannot be read in books. I learned more than I thought I would on this trip. I was in tears by the end of the self guided tour and after the short documentary she showed us. Thank you so much Rosalyn. I will never forget.
Awesome Staff they Love what they Do!
From out of town.. outstanding history here in Savannah, and even on a national scale. Me and my family learned a lot. Highly recommend the visit for all.. p.s. price was right at 10.00 or under if I remember right. Student discount also up to college. So if your 40 but in school u get the discount. Not 100% sure but its not expensive.
The history was well portrayed. The adversity and pain exposed opened doors for so many people. People of many ethnicities had the courage to fight for justice and equality. We are all in this together as a human race.
Our first trip to historic Savannah. Three day girlfriends weekend and we wanted to experience the African American culture. The attendants were very welcoming when we entered and very informative. They were well versed in the museums history as well as other area attractions related to our event. I will be visiting again to experience with others that travel with me.
Great visit. Friendly staff. We plan to return!
Mcd for a certain organizations tenth birthday party here. Super cool decor, good temperature. All the desireable trappings for event hosting.
This was such an amazing experience !!!! Stopped because we saw a sign in the interstate and made the immediate exit, which we did not regret ! Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Really shed a light on the economic power or the boycott and its impact on Savannah! Will be sure to bring any and everyone.
Great Experience, really touched the soul.
Beautiful first time ive ever been there in my life it was awesome.
The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and shared their experiences of growing up in the area. The exhibits were comprehensive. I learned so much of Savannah’s history with slavery, segregation and civil rights. It’s often overlooked in favor of Montomgery but it has a quiet power. The documentary is not to be missed.
I enjoyed the history lesson. The tour guide was great. I would definitely recommend this place.
A great place to learn about Savannahs place in history in the struggle for equal rights. Very educational, and the staff was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Great displays and informative short film rounded out the visit. Recommended!
The Civil Rights Museum pays homage to Savannah’s riot-less Civil Rights movement.I enjoyed the museum’s artifacts, replicas, and introduction video. It is a small space so if you see a chartered bus unloading you may want to comeback at a later time. The museum has three floors with very steep stairs; although I did see a small elevator but you need to be accompanied by staff.
Excellent! Learned so much!
Frog Town reunion connected me more to the culture and history of Savannah
Nice treat. Some interactive exhibits. A really awesome educational film about the historic civil rights era boycott in Savannah which set the stage for other boycotts around the south. I definitely gained a new appreciation for the work of the movement in Savannah and southern South Carolina.
Hidden gem in Savannah, wonderful museum . Not big but still a great place visit. Valuable information.
I visited Savannah for my bday and made sure to visit this museum. Very interesting artifacts. This was definitely a reminder that although we`ve made progress we still have a lot more to do. Ths next time im in Savannah I will definitely visit again to see if anything new was added.
Great place for any event, very spacious
This is a must see in Savannah. I was blessed to be able to listen to Ms. Rosalyn and learn about the efforts that occurred here. Please come and visit this important place.
Im from Downtown Savannah and im really please with the location and sites of this facility...Keep living life to the fullest!
It has been remodeled. It looks beautiful piriton but I went there for a function for boys & girls club which was nice.
It was wonderful. I wished we had more time to see everything. Sis. V was very informative. Since I am a native Savannahian, I was proud that Savannah had documented very well her own Civil Rights fight and WON!
Very educational and the people the work there is very nice and friendly.
Enjoyed the tour. The history was great.
Staff was very friendly. Very informative
Very nice place to have family get togethers and parties!
Very clean full of great history
It was good but do wish it had a little bit more about civil rights but overall very educational
The museum is run by people who have a deep knowledge about many topics / issues - ask questions
Amazing time. Everyone we courteous. This is a place everyone must visit. So much history to learn.
Very powerful and informative history lesson. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. I learned alot.
Great place for a wedding or party but kind of small for the price.
Very informative and interesting. Looks a bit outdated at times, but still manages to captivate.
Take the time to stop here - look, read, and talk. The staff is an amazing resource - knowledgeable about many topics
Awesome Museum. Very informative and well put together. Must see when in Savannah
Loved the showcases of old pics and ok costumes and burned cross.
I had never heard the story of Savannahs amazing story of integration and the bravery and commitment of the black community.
Very elegant and spacious venue. Staff was also very nice
Amazing place to check out with great history omg they even have a real klux klan robe in here defiantly worth money
Loved the tour! We took our teens from church and they had a great time.
Excellent tour guide very informative.
Small but very educational.
Went there in 2002(or 2003?) as part of a church youth trip. Having grown up in NYC in the 60s and 70s, didnt experience much overt prejudice. Heard the stories from my forebears who were Floridians, though. Seeing exhibits and a very moving film reinforced the struggle my peoples (African-Americans) went through to get us where we are... But, weve squandered the progress they bled and died for. *sigh*
When you walk in, the place transforms you to another world.
Small, but a great representation of the Civil Rights struggles of the blacks of Savannah.
Know your history
A lot of history and information. The staff was very knowledgeable and hands on. Very enlightening, a must see!
Good interesting museum plenty to see and do
