Great tour with Max, who was informative and knowledgeable as well as entertaining. I appreciated the fact that the tour didn’t dwell on the book/movie based on Mr. Mercer’s court trials, but more so on his passion for art and knack for collecting and restoring. The house and its contents are beautifully eclectic, and it felt like every piece and every fixture had a story to tell. The tour was on the shorter side, about 40 minutes - I would have gladly paid more for a full hour :)
This was a fascinating tour of an elegant historic Savannah home. Even the middle-school kids paid attention and asked questions! Beautiful antiques, paintings and floors, with interesting history to give a feel for a bygone era. We enjoyed the knowledgeable and personable tour guide. The house has some surprising 20th-century cultural reference points! Worth a visit, and nice gift shop, too.
Oh my we enjoyed this tour so much. What a beautiful home with so much rich history. Our tour guide, Max, was absolutely 100 percent amazing. Well worth visiting.
When planning my trip to Savannah, I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and definitely wanted to see the house where the central murder took place. The house is beautiful, takes up an entire block, and has a lot of history. The gift shop could have been a little better, and the tour could have been more extensive. I enjoyed seeing the outside of the house the most, though, knowing its history.
My new favorite house in Savannah. Absolutely beautiful inside and out. Wish we could have gone upstairs but totally understand why not.
Tour good and very educational. No photos allowed though and almost too much to take in in the time allotted for the tour
This is a beautiful home and was only a block from our B&B so we walked by it everyday. I was a bit disappointed in the tour. The guide said he welcomed questions but he answered, I dont know to most of the questions. I cant imagine that was the first time he was hearing them so why an effort wasnt made to learn the answers sort of baffles me. It was also a bit disappointing we couldnt see the lower or upper levels.
Wonderful! Max was very friendly and very informative. My only regret is that I didnt take down the full information on the Loque portrait for further reading. I will definitely visit again!
Beautiful house. Great for people who love the history of Savannah and learn about Jim Williams. The art there is also fantastic! Zack was our guide and he was very informative and really nice. He did great.
Recently toured this beautiful home. Our tour guide Zach was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we enjoyed our tour immensely. Im not sure why theres a ton of old bad press for this tour on TripAdvisor. Frankly the entire movie is glamourized to, thats right less we forget, to SELL MOVIES. I was surprised and did not know Mr Williams was an avid collector. As a pianist myself, I wouldve loved to have seen his original piano but thats me being a selfish musician lol!!! Well worth your money for the tour. Honestly, I wouldve paid more. Many other tours in the city charge double for their tours. Thank u to those preserving and giving tours to this historic site. Its a masterpiece!
Although you only tour a portion of the mansion it is definitely worth it to see the collection of art, furniture, and culture.
Absolutely gorgeous home, and a very knowledgeable tour guide!! Was a bit sad that you only tour the main floor (no basement nor upstairs tours) and also absolutely no poctures or videos, which does make sense since the residence is still occasionally occupied. But all in all, definitely worth the visit!
Awesome experience! Very much enjoyed our tour guide, L!
This is a must see! Jim Williams restored this home along with 70 other historic homes and buildings in Savannah. He was truly ahead of his time. The collection of antiques and art is worth the trip alone and the architecture is equally amazing. The shopping at Carriage House Shop is fabulous! The tour guide was very knowledgeable, enjoyed it very much.
Omg we were so thrilled.....the tour guide knew his stuff and made it more intersting
Very interesting tour and guide was very knowledgeable.
I thought this was the home of Johnny Mercer. Its not! So read info about it before you book a tour, if youre expecting any Mercer history.
Interesting history and it was cool seeing the place where the murder happened.
Jesus Christ get rid of this dump.
Unfortunately the museum was closed the week we visited town, but the owner of the home happened to be there working in the yard when we were walking by. She was so gracious and spent some time visiting with my mom, giving a little history of the home and the lovely antiquities her brother had collected over the years. I had hoped they still had some of the pieces he had gathered and she confirmed many are still there in the museum. She was so lovely to visit with and it was quite nice if her to stop and chat. Next time I am in town I will be sure to stop by so I can see the beautifully restored interior of the home and some of the antique pieces Mr. Williams meticulously collected.
The tour is underwhelming personally. Especially ifnyour a fan of the book or film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil but our tour guide was a total sweetheart amd I got a beautiful piece of local art. So Jim Williams legacy is ongoing
Despite the weather, our tour of the house was wonderful. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Being a fan of the book and the movie, it was surreal to be in the same space as described in the book. Even if you’re not a fan of the book or movie, the house is fantastic and is a must see.
I loved everything about this tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. The house was absolutely stunning. The background on the house was interesting. I’d read about the house and one of its owners before I toured, but learned so much more on the tour. Even the gift shop was darling. This is a partial tour of the house. You do not tour the top part nor the basement/servers quarters. The top part is where the owners live. The tour guide couldn’t give me a reason we couldn’t go downstairs(which the stairs are beautiful and hidden if not looking at everything.) Even without those floors, we felt it was worth the money and time.Tips/FYI:The house is old and clearly doesn’t have air so be hydrated before you go.I would not bring children. Too many antiques and not interesting for them. You get the tickets in the gift shop and wait for the tour there. The gift shop is in the back of the house. Walk down the block on the side of house. Look for the small signs or you’ll be confused.Cameras not allowed inside
People were kind of rude about the mask thing. We were already getting our masks out and they were super mean about it. Also, disappointed in the price for not being able to see more of the house. Should of been cheaper if we couldnt see the whole house.
Probably one of the best mansion tours we did. A lot to see and learn. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly and will answer any questions. They also do talk about the book contrary to what other reviews have suggested.
You really cant visit Savannah and not want to tour the Mercer Williams house. The tour only covers the ground floor but youll see the home pretty much as it was when Jim Williams shot that boy. The Book helped to put Savannah on the map and the mansion is a piece of local history not to be missed. The tours sell out on busy weekends so be sure to book ahead.
Very well preserved piece of history, awesome tour guide with lots of information!
Guided tour of downstairs of Jim Williams mansion was very informative. Many antiques, some of which were meticulously restored by Mr Williams were on display. There Good Shop is also very nice. Love to stop by when Im in town.
Wonderful tour! Time well spent. The house has an interesting history and contains many beautiful antiques. Tour guide was outstanding.
This place only tours the main floor. We heard about the basement, we heard about the upstairs but we did not get to see any of it. I felt like our tour guide was a little harsh. He was not very friendly and squished in our group really tight, then told us not to touch anything. I didnt feel like this was welcoming at all.
My wife and I took the tour at the Mercer-Williams house. We both had read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil prior to our honeymoon in Savannah, so we really wanted to check out the house that was talked about in the book. As a side note, you dont need to read the book (or watch the movie) to appreciate the Mercer-Williams House. It is a beautiful house with a great story behind it. If architecture, antiques and/or history are your thing - you would enjoy the tour. The house tour takes place on the first floor of the home. An interesting fact, the upper floors are still in use by the family (so they were off limits of course). All of the rooms were great - there were several very neat antiques present in the home. One of our favorite features of the home was the stained glass skylight in the ceiling of the staircase. The tour guide was very informative and was happy to receive questions from our group. They clarified some things that the movie got wrong about Jim Williams and the events that happened in this house. The tour group was a reasonable size, so you were still able to see all of the sights and hear the guide easily. If youve read the book, it was really interesting to see where some of the events took place in the home. Also, trying to figure out where some of the other characters mentioned in the book may have lived.Overall, were both glad we took the tour at the Mercer-Williams House. Wed recommend it to anyone.
Watch the movie first!! fascinating..A bit pricey to go in for a tour, so be prepared.. but a very lovely home..I love the history..
Great history with a wonderful collection to view. The docent was impressive with his knowledge of the stories from the book and movie, but moreso with his knowledge and respect for Jim Williams and the work he did with saving and restoring homes and art, as well as his contributions to Savannah. Definitely worth a visit!
Interesting place. But no pics allowed and they wont take you to the basement or to the second floor. $$$
We went and done a tour. Was a bummer that we couldnt tour the upstairs. Beautiful house with a lot of history!
It is one of my favorite things to do in Savannah
Had to take the tour after recently reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The house does not disappoint! Tours are every half hour so they can be kept small, and even though you only visit the main floor, its worth seeing the historical rooms and hearing the history. Jim Williams was a fascinating man in his day. The carriage house gift shop is worth a look.
Having read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil before we came to Savannah, it was inevitable we’d do this tour.Only the ground floor rooms are included as the upper floor is occupied by members of the Williams family, but they are crammed with interesting works of art and antiques. Our guide was knowledgable and friendly and told the history of the house in a clear and concise way. We did however get the impression that he skimmed over the 1980’s shooting which was the subject of the book and which led to the trial (4 times) of Jim Williams before his eventual acquittal. This was a very worthwhile tour however, despite being a bit on the short side, and it was certainly worth the time.
It was good, as far as the tour. However, it was not long enough for what you are paying for to see everything. All three floors, except for the closed off area that the residents are in, should be available to the public for viewing. The tour guide, Max, was good, but didnt seem to have a lot of knowledge in regards to the paintings that Williams had.
Got a very good tour with lots of info I just wish we could have seen more of the house
Staff was unbelievably condescending and patronizing.
Fantastic tour! Max the tour guide was amazing. His knowledge of the art and the house was incredible. Well worth it. We had 9 year old kids with us and they both enjoyed it as well.
The tour includes some 4 rooms of one floor (the other floors are not included since they are a private residence), and even though they dont talk about the murder, you can buy both the novel and Clint Eastwoods movie Midnight in the garden of good and evil in the shop which serves as the entrance to the guided tour. This house is featured in the movie and was the original residence of the protagonists of the movie and novel. One more thing, photos are not allowed in the garden or inside the house.
Loved the tour.
Great place to check out, lots of history in Savannah, GA
We visit here Everytime we come to savannah.
We missed the tour and I believe that would have been the difference of 4 stars. We will try again.
Adds to the real history of what happened in the house.
Do not bother going to this overpriced museum if you have children. Ross, the rude, condescending, impatient guide, will kick you out in the most southern way possible if your child makes so much as a peep during his tour. Ross is a soft spoken old man, it is nearly impossible to hear him at all... Today we decided to take the tour of the house. My wife, aunt, brother and I paid $13 each for entry. Our 2 year old child, who the guide previously knew was going with us through the tour, behaved extremely well without any extremely loud outburst, disruption or crying. He acted just like any other 2 year old... I was actually surprised how well he was being. When we got to the front section of the inside of the house, in a very low voice, Ross said to my wife “he’s not gonna make it”. My son did not disrupt or touch anything, he did not ruin the tour for anyone and he certainly did not speak so loudly that people could not hear the guide. At one point my son quietly said something to my wife while Ross was talking. It was at this point Ross immediately stopped what he was saying. Walked over to my wife and in front of everybody he embarrassed her by saying that because of my child nobody could hear him. Sorry Ross, it wasn’t because of my child nobody could hear you. It’s because you can’t speak at a loud enough level for anybody to hear you... My wife and I left the tour in disgust maybe half way through. I really wouldn’t suggest the tour to anybody. It’s very overpriced for what you get to see. 4 rooms for $13 and you can’t even hear what is said.Ross, hopefully you get this in the most southern way possible: Bless your heart. To everybody else thinking about stopping here. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY.
Beautiful art, furniture and building. The guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. Excellent tour and beautiful house.
This house is so beautiful and has so much history inside. My favorite part is the gold dome going over the staircase. My guide was incredibly sweet and very well educated on the history. A must see if you are a fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
The tour was very informative and it is a beautiful house. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Only wish I could have seen more, like the ball room and downstairs!
For 12.50 plus tax, it was short, only featured the first floor and featured the owners antique finds more than the architecture. No pictures allowed, but you can buy their book. The upstairs ballroom and pipe organ was a no-go. Guide was excellent.
2nd time touring and this was by far a way better experience. Max provided more historical information and an overall pleasant tour. Last time we toured was 6 years ago and the staff was rude and did not provide much information. Very much worth the money this time!
The quintessential Savannah home tour. Mercer house has managed to secure the single best tour guide I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. This gentleman was INCREDIBLY knowledgeable, witty, and gracious which really made the Mercer House and the history of its famous inhabitant, Jim Williams, come to life. Plus, he sounded exactly like Morgan Freeman (especially in the cadence of his speech) so it somehow felt even more glamorous. The home itself is STUNNING. The collection of art and antiques contained within is perfectly curated (of course) and the current resident does occasionally change out the collections so the tour wont necessarily remain a static event. All in all, a wonderful gem that shouldnt be missed!
Nice tour. Guide seemed knowledgeable.
I liked the tour and the tour guide had a great personality. I wish I could have seen the entire house. I also wonder why we couldn’t take photos.
Fascinating History. # awesome
Home of the Jim Williams as made famous by the book and the movie
Always wanted to go to the place where Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil was based. Didnt disappoint!
A lot of art talk. Not an art fan. The house was full of history
Just amazingBefore you visit ....I recommend to read or watch the movie Midnight in the garden of good and evil
Very interesting, but a little short since you doesn’t go to the second floor...
They will tell you all about the antiques and how it was built, but if youre interested in the murder that took place there you will be disappointed. So unless you want to just see it up close I would recommend you just read the book.
Read the book, watch the movie and after hearing the guides version, arrive at your own conclusions. For me, another beautiful hoyse in Savannah.
Great experience. I enjoyed being able to connect with the scenes and characters in the movie. Keep in mind, not everything will be depicted as it was in the movie, because it was a movie! Just appreciate the history and experience and enjoy!
A must for midnight fans!
Wouldve loved to have taken the tour...maybe next year! Really enjoyed the movie...Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil!
I highly recommend taking the guided tour. Our guide was wonderful and knowledgeable. The gift shop has lots of fun gifts, and things to being back for family. My wife is obsessed with this place :) lovely home, and a great step back into history. Surrounded by opulence, and rich Savannah history.
A lovely place to view from the outside. You can see photos online. We did not pay the $13 for the tour when we found out you cant take pics and you only get to view the gardens outside and a few rooms on the first floor. Tickets however are available in the carriage house behind the house in the gift shop. Also for those wondering, this house is not wheelchair accessible.
Very interesting and intriguing museum! There is lots of neat history here.
Interesting history in this house. Beautiful eclectic furnishings and collections.
The house was beautiful and our guide was very knowledgeable. You only go through the first floor, and the gift shop didnt have very much related to the house.
The house tour was well done. Lots of history of the home, art, and Savannah was included. The tour only goes through the first floor, as the home is still someones residence. Watch the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil before you go. The movie was about the guy that restored the house, along with many other homes in Savannah.
Truly a beautiful home! Architecture, gardens and furnishings are remarkable. Jim Williams was an amazing restorer of beautiful homes and the antiques are pieces art that are inspiring to see.
The self guided time in the building is the best! We were able to browse at our own place and revisit areas that we were more interested in.
One house still available for tours in area.
Expensive for seeing three rooms. Although the guide (an older gentleman) was amazing!! Was very informative .
Very knowledgable tour guide house is magnificent!was disappointed that it was a tour of only a few rooms and no photes were allowed
Very cool tour, learned a lot.
Beautiful Savannah history with intrigue and mystery! A must see if you’re in town.
If youve seen Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this is the house it happened in. The movie inspired by the book and murder put Savannah on the map. Fantastic architecture!
Go visit the house every single year we go. Just beautiful as are all the historic homes in Savannah, Charleston, and Beaufort.
