Small box theater but powerful Thanksgiving theme production. Excellent performance.Encore: I revisited the theater late Feb 2019 and experienced another excellent show in this intimate venue, Sender. Be prepared for a wild ride with 4 excellent performances.
Interesting little theater. Great showSurrender, great acting, sadly easy too much sweating. Low budget production. Great acting
Lovely venue for a cozy theatre experience! Great acoustics, simple seating, however only one ladies and one gentlemans restroom, so it made intermission a bit awkward in the lobby. Also, Great hosts on hand for the event! The Urbanite is located in a setting where there is access to many restaurant choices. Arrive early for dinner before or have coffee dessert after the show you choose to attend. We picked Patricks for a delicious meal and were well pleased indeed!
Very challenging play. Excellent acting. Love the intimacy. Felt like I was in the room.
Small intimate theater, thought provoking plays.
Loved this theater! Very small around 70 seats. This means that no matter where you sit you can see the performance well. They offer free wine, and excellent parking across the street at Whole Foods garage. The play we saw was Dikes and it was beautifully performed. This truly is a little gem!
Great acting as always but the Thanksgiving play was only ok
Apples in Winter is one of the best one womans performance I have seen yet!! Amazing!! I recommend this play to everyone! This hit home hard for me. Just amazing!!
We had an excellent night at the Urbanite Theatre. From the moment we walked in the door we were met with phenomenal service and customer care. The actual theatre and stage brings you into the experience at a much more intimate level than large theatres and performance halls. The play we saw was awesome. Acting, script and costumes all excellent. Highly recommended for those living in or visiting Sarasota who want to experience a fantastic evening out.
The theater was recommended to me by a friend and I love theater generally so I bought a season ticket to Urbanite for 2018-19.I have enjoyed both productions so far but Apples in Winter was amazing. Roxanne Fay is a terrifically talented actor —the ONLY actor in this production and she held the audience in her capable hands for over an hour. It was a standing ovation for me and I really hope we will see more of her in productions here in Sarasota.
Excellent and very intimate venue to enjoy theater. Very friendly and attentive staff... edgy, raw and well performed and directed production of Dike. I will be back and would highly recommend!
If youre from a big city and youre used to and like unusual theater, and find it stimulating rather than over your head, this is the theater of your life. I have been a subscriber and look forward to each new production. This is not boring. This is not Hollywood. This theater will eventually be a major player in Sarasota. It makes Sarasota look even better and shows a turn for the younger and more adventurous culture in this city.
This is the third production we have seen at the Urbanite and it was excellent. It is such an intimate theater and the acting is top notch. We highly recommend this place.
Acting great. Play we saw very thought provoking
This was my second time here. I enjoyed the first event, a comedy. Went to a dramatic one man show this time. Depressing and far too nuanced to understand what point the pkaywrite hoped to make. Acting was good but awful material.
My favorite venue for drama anywhere in Florida. Edgy, exciting, intimate black box productions that focus on human interaction and always give you a lot to think and talk about. Ive seen about 8 of their productions, and liked them all. The present show, Pilgrims is the best yet. The quality of acting, directing, set design, and choice of plays is always top notch. For one show, the audience surrounds the stage; for the next all the seats are on one side, with nobody more than about ten feet away from the actors. They are super laid back. They even offer you a free glass of wine when you arrive, and you can bring it into the theatre if you like. Prices are reasonable, especially the $5 deal for students, and when we missed a show they let us stand by at the next performance.
One of the best small live theaters in the area. The mix of small cast productions is always entertaining, consisting of timely subject matter and thought provoking messages. Love this theater!
LOVE, love the Urbanite Theatre. I have been several times and the acting is very good and the plays are interesting. Unfortunately, the present play Wacky Wacky was boring. Acting was good but the play was not. Thank goodness it was only 70 minutes. But it certainly will not stop me going to their next play. I belong to several theatres in Sarasota and occasionally there is one you didnt like.
Great theater to sit right atop the action. A great night every time. Dont miss it if visiting Sarasota
I only go for the well stocked bar.
Absolutely wonderful people making groundbreaking and entertaining performances.
Great little intimate theatre. Loved the play!
Loved the very powerful show.
The Urbanite Theater has brought something new to Sarasota, uncompromising standards of production, direction, and most of all acting. A young dynamic duo has taken up the charge of finding new playwrights of uncommon ability who are stretching the limits of our hearts and imaginations. The intimacy of the theater space is matched by the endless invention of staging so that the regular audience has the sense every time as though it were the first time. In a cultural landscape of total political and social exhaustion the Urbanite is a theatre which has stirred our hearts and minds and brought a welcome renewal.
Excellent performance of Incognito. Four actors with massive skills. Venue intimate but worthy of a visit!
Saw the preview last night. I love it! Great work to the entire company. Im a fan and a friend. Cant wait to see whats next! The show is edgy, brings to light a issues that need to be talked about and addressed. This is what theatre should do. Have a great run.
Excellent performance, brilliant acting, moving writing, superbly done!
Unusual one-of-a-kind, plays; many 80 or 90 minutes without intermission. Smallish theatre ( seats about 50 ) youll either love it or hate it.......depends on the play.
A Bijou new theatre in Sarasota.Tiny and intimate space, which is amazingly used to draw the audience fully into the world of the play. Last year, Reborning was edgy and contemporary.Dry Land is a dark comedy highlighting the fun and antics of teenage life, yet the tragic consequences of youthful choices. Brilliantly portrayed by the young actors. Intense, funny and horrific all at once. Phenomenal.
Challenging play, Freak, beautifully acted by the two women. Hard to execute the writing in a believable way. They did it. A tough and dark play. Should open mens and womens eyes to the struggle some feel in their sexuality.
This intimate theater space is charming and comfortable. The production quality and acting were outstanding. Highly recommend!
My favorite theater in town by far. So intimate, original and thought provoking. Always a great experience. Cameron DeBruin, owner of Conscious Cab and Longboat Key Taxi.
Wonderful intimate theater with wonderful plays.
What a unique theatre experience! Very cool
I so love this place! Raw stories, amazing acting, and intimate setting. I have almost seen every production since opening. If I miss one, it better be a good reason. You will leave here thinking deeply about your what you just experienced. Support the live performing arts. These people on stage are exceptional. I recently saw Wakey Wakey not once, but twice. Profound. It can open your heart and your mind, if you allow it. Cry, smile, laugh, feel the joy. Let it out. Its good for you. One of my all time favorites at the Urbanite. Acting was superb as always. I will never forget this one. Thanks for the pen. :)
Excellent theater venue and productions
Great shows in an intimate theater. Parking is on second floor of the Whole Foods building (entrance is on second street).
Engaging, entertaining and thought provoking theater. A real local gem.
Ive seen 7 plays and they have all been excellent.
Edgier than most local theatre and high- quality productions.
Fun place. Great play!! Fun staff
Avant-garde edgy, intimate contemporary theater. May not be your cup of tea, but perhaps it should. Not exactly a walk on the wild side, but perhaps on the other side!
A surpringly modern aesthetic in a city full of less-than-contemporary tastes.
Edgy, interesting work brilliantly deliveredEvery show
Every DNA molecule of Urbanite Theatre is brutally, beautifully, and bountifully realistic.
Beautiful:)
ITS A LITTLE GEM ON A SIDE STREET! live in st pete. first time visit. love live theatre & looking on the internet, found the urbanite. saw breadcrumbs. a gripping play by jennifer haley. a powerful performance from 2 superior actors ( i wish you had their names on your website) a play that will stay with me. i will be coming back as often as i can.
