I am writing this review for the original Bishops Lodge resort and in particular the chapel of Bishop Lamy, that sits on the property and has for about 170 years. It is such a modest, humble and magical chapel, well worth a visit and alsi a read of its history. This chapel was built for the first Archbishop of Santa Fe.

The best part of our experience here was the food at the on site restaurant – it was wonderful. Everything else was a big disappointment. We arrived to be put in a very old room with spider webs everywhere. It was hot in the room as the sun had been shining in all day and we were told that the air conditioning had already been shut off for the year and we should open the windows to cool the room down. The engineering guys did bring in a fan which helped move air around, but explained that this was an old building. I was very disappointed with my stay here and would not return. The windows had to be open all night and made the room tolerable, but not comfortable. The TV was old, the remote was dirty and the TV reception was poor. I expected so much more after spending time on the website for this resort – perhaps other rooms here are better – but I would not chance it. I made the mistake of seeing 25% off of what appeared to be a high end room rate room here and thought I would be getting a nice room at a discount – I should have known better.

The first room was spacious but it had some kind of flying bugs they were inside and more were outside on the window so we asked for another room. The second room was nice but much smaller. The whole facility is in much need of renovation. There is no restaurant or bar so you have to go into town to eat which is a bit of a drive. Unless major changes occur we will not stay there again.

Great location and hotel. The only thing was that the bed was uncomfortable however it was a great place to stay.

We stayed at Bishops Lodge a number of years ago for a special weekend, complete with a very special Sunday brunch and a couples massage. What luxury! When we went back to try to repeat the magic, neither the restaurant nor the spa was open. (Nor the swimming pool, though I dont think we cared.) Its not walking distance to any restaurants, so not having a restaurant is a real issue. They offered hors doeuvre in the late afternoon. Chips and salsa and a rather tired cheese plate with crackers, with bottled water or canned soft drinks - rather an insult in a historic old place. We were told theyre changing hands and renovating - well, I think maybe they should close until theyre done.

Spa was closed, so not a spa as billed. Restaurant closed. Bar closed. Exercise facility with broken and rusted equipment.Unable to reserve horseback ride, because no one returned multiple calls over three day stay.Walkway bridge to room rickety and unsafe. No elevator to second floor room.Very disappointing.

This hotel could be fantastic. But it isnt! From the moment we checked in we were subjected to mediocre (and once downright rude) service, terrible food and felt ripped off every step of the way. We were travelling with our kids, one who had just had emergency surgery (great holiday!) and didnt need the lack of hospitality on offer here. We cut our stay short and checked out the next day.I would not recommend this run down, unloved and seriously overpriced hotel to anyone.

We returned to Bishops Lodge after a long hiatus. Brunch there was especially good in the old days.Today, the site and unmaintained remnants still show that the resort was grand; but today 4weeds at our door; drapes hanging; awful tan sheets and mattress; brand new staff who could not keep their jobs in the Bates Hotel; Lamy Chapel about to fall down, just disgraceful!

We booked three nights (7/6-7/8/15) based on there being a spa, restaurant and bar on the premises as well as horseback riding available. Upon arrival, we were told that the spa, restaurant and bar were closed due to renovation of the property. These amenities were the main reason we selected this destination, along with the beautiful pictures from the propertys website. The room we had was spacious, but reeked of wood smoke. The bathroom, though clean, had faucets that leaked and the tile around the bathtub showed some signs of mildew. After two days, I finally had to ask for washcloths since none had been provided. On our last day washcloths did appear, however, we had to sacrifice the bed being made. Apparently, providing washcloths and making the bed were too much for the housekeeping staff to handle on that day. We walked down to the stables to see the horses and observed manure in the green water that had collected in the feed trough--ugh! There were several baskets of used towels around the pool that must have sat in the rain for at least a couple of days. When we mentioned this to a staff member who seemed to be in charge, the baskets of towels were finally removed and the supply of fresh towels was replenished. The overall property had a look of being understaffed since things like weeding the property and removing rain-soaked placemats and water-filled candle holders from the outside restaurant/bar tables didnt command attention.

This historic property fit the needs of our family with children perfectly. The junior suite with pull-out bed comfortably accomodated 4 and the historic, adobe buildings are cool and comfortable, even in the scorching heat of July. It is not to the level of a luxury resort, largely due to variability in service and amenities. When we checked in, maintenance personnel (instead of a bellhop) were sent to help us with our bags and came in a vehicle so dirty, they refused to put our soft-sided bags in for fear of soiling them. After driving for 8+ hours to get there, this was exasperating. At other times, we had exceptional service, particularly in the restaurant, the stables, and at the poolside grill. The ice machine was broken and their dryer apparently broke, leading to a towel-shortage at the pool. The morning trailride was far superior to most I have done in the past, as the wrangler was knowledable and entertaining and the horses were well-trained and well-cared for. The scenery on the ride was as good as it gets in New Mexico (which is never as breath-taking as Colorado). The hiking trails are well-marked and easy enough even for children and those from sea-level altitudes. The kids club was staffed with enthusiastic teenagers, and our kids had a great time doing arts and crafts and swimming. Overall, well be back to Bishops Lodge, but only for a reasonable rate!

We returned to this hotel based solely upon our own stay a few years ago. What a disappointment, and worse. First room we were shown to was not the one we had confirmed this past December (six months prior to check in). Finally taken to room we rented to begin with after theyd told us it was not available to find it was indeed vacant. In a deluxe room, king bed, wet bar, balcony, sitting area, comparable to a suite, quite large, same room we had when we last visited.Toilet not flushing properly, continued running; three lights with only one way working in ALL of them, consequently low light and not enough to read with in this very large room; safe inoperable and engineer did not know how it worked; stains on bed covering and on sofa and chair with ottoman; stains all over fraying carpeting; room service never picked up tray at door, despite being called and animals scavenged during the night; called for someone to show us how everything worked in the room at check-in -- no one ever came; it seemed to be one mishap after another with absolutely no redemption. This was the very worst service wed ever experienced. After being assured by the assistant manager with whom we had a private meeting, (G.M. not in for those days we were there), we returned to this room at 3:00 in the afternoon only to find we had not had housekeeping in yet.Despite repeated calls to the assistant manager as recently as last week (to his personal cell phone and his office at the hotel), no calls were ever returned. All the above unacceptable and we checked out and checked into the beautiful, finely serviced Inn of the Five Graces. Thank goodness they had room for us.

After a long day of travel we arrived at the hotel around 8:00 p.m. only to find out the restaurant was under construction (we had hoped to dine there.) When I inquired about other dining options the front desk attendant said the only place he knew of that might be open still for dinner was a few miles away. He did not offer up any other options or suggestions. The ice machine in our unit was out-of-order. The breakfast that was included with our room consisted of cold cereal, fruit and prepackaged muffins. (Im not sure if, had the restaurant been open, we would have received a hot breakfast included with our room.) We still tried to make the best of things since the hotel is set in a beautiful area and has a series of nature trails. We attempted a hike but the trails were very rugged and not well marked and we ended up eventually just returning back on the same route. The rooms were quite large and the hotel could have been a great experience had it not been for those huge disappointments!

The place is falling apart. Almost all my complaints are related to the physical state of the place. The first room was completely unacceptable. Decor was c.1975. Dark bathroom with non functioning tub and toilet. Filthy stained carpet. Smoke smell. No central air/heat.We were moved to another room. The shower reminded me of a college dorm shower. Bathroom always smelled musty. The bed was saggy and uncomfortable. Not that I go on vacation to watch TV, but with small children, you need it sometimes. The TV was probably a 20 year old tube tv.The coffee machine produces undrinkable dishwater coffee. I only mention this because they specifically itemize this under the list of things that the resort fee covers. The restaurant food was completely disgusting. My sons steak appeared to have been microwaved. The vegetables were frozen steam in bag tasting or worse. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE FOR WHAT THEY CHARGED!The staff however was very kind and tried to help. Unfortunately there was not much they could do.I would never recommend this place and wont be coming back.

Excellent Value, although price will go up after upgrades this fall. Quiet in beautiful countryside, and an easy, short drive to Santa Fe. Management very personable, would talk to guests at breakfast. Room large & lots of light, although bathroom lights not bright enough. I have stayed many places in Santa Fe over the years & this would be my return choice. A few weeds in the patios, but who cares?

We knew that Bishops Lodge was closing for a major renovation at the end of September, but gave it a try anyway— we were not disappointed. Its a lovely place with lots of history, a large grounds for hiking and horse back riding, and wildlife. We saw a large deer prance across the lawn, and the next day we were alerted that a bear was sighted near the buildings, although we didnt see him, but others did. This hotel is in the country and not for those who are squeamish about local wildlife (i.e. bears wandering freely in close proximity to buildings.) The pre-renovation rooms are good and staff was quick to fix any problems. A great place to see nature and get away from the city.

This hotel, once a gem, has clearly fallen on hard times. While the setting and grounds remain impressive, the condition of the place leaves a whole lot to be desired. Even though renovations apparently in the works, there is little to recommend the place now. The hotel was minimally staffed while we were there and we waited more than hour for our room to be ready after arriving at the 4 pm check in time. Because of a tight schedule and no room, we had to change clothes in a filthy poolside changing room. The continental breakfast consisted of mostly pre-packaged baked goods, boxed cereal, and a limited selection of fruit which ran out. The coffee was depleted when we arrived well before closing. Weve had better breakfasts in Hampton Inns, which are, by the way, a much better choice.

I came up from Albuquerque NM for the weekend. I brought my daughter along because someone had told me about their kids camp. I was able to enjoy a horseback ride while my daughter enjoyed the resort activities they offered. Great setting against the national forest. Very historic and great family friendly resort.

Beautiful place just north of Santa Fe, lots of hiking trails and pine trees abound. However we were a little disappointed that the health spa and restaurant were closed and the breakfast buffet they used to have was relegated to cheap cellophane wrapped muffins, lousy boxed cereal and two pots of coffee, decaf and regular which was out of coffee. They did have fresh fruit which was a plus. However the Santa Fe plaza is quite close and there are plenty of good places to have meals. I would definitely go back in a heartbeat in spite of their short comings this time around.

We enjoyed our stay very much, but many of the amenities were not available due to the renovation under way. It has the feel of a lodge that was once amazing, then got a bit run down and is now being revamped. The rooms were great and the areas was beautiful. Free breakfast was nice and the room was clean. We even brought our dog.

We had read a lot of negative reviews and we can only say that they were wrong. My wife and I had a great time and the staff was very friendly. The negative reviews were from guests who did not understand the difference between a hotel and a lodge. Even the wonderful smell from the wood burning fireplace made us feel at home. We would go back in a heart beat.
