It is as perfect and unique a golf course as it looks. Words don’t do it justice. Amazing fairways, greens, scenery, bunkers, etc. There are a lot of blind shots so it’s certainly worth playing several times to try to improve your score. My favorite golf course I’ve ever played. It’s THAT good. Trust the reviews, they’re all accurate.
Played it for the first time last week. Cart guys act like your best friends and give you all the tips youll need. Staff is incredibly friendly and stoked you get to play it. Its not really golf. Its absurd and so fun. They have an app you can use to orient yourself and know where to aim. And the course is in tip top shape with some of the most dramatic golf views. Some of them dont seem to make sense. But when you get to the green it makes perfect sense. Easily the most fun course Ive played, and a true challenge. Shot an 85 so Im happy.
Unbelievable experience. From arrival to departure, we were taken care of to the highest regard. We stayed in the Stewart Cabin for two nights, played three rounds, fished and explored the grounds on carts with mounted fog lamps. The course was amazing from the architecture to the physical grounds. Challenging but fun. Highly recommend and will be back!
One of the most unique golf courses you can play. I live in Raleigh and try to play it 3-4 times per year. It never disappoints - always a treat! If youre a golfer, you have to play it! Plain and simple.
This course is UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Ive played some of bucket list courses and Tobacco Road is right up there! I just played Pebble and I would pick Tobacco Road over Pebble. Every marshal on the course was beyond polite, gave great advice and were just awesome. My ONLY knock is the guy working the pro shop. He was a manager and was just unpleasant. He seemed like he just didnt want to be there. Very short with answers and almosted killed what was an amazing experience. Do not sleep on Tobacco Road if youre planning a golf trip.
The golf course was in nice shape. It has its blind carries that are unique and fun. I was disappointed that on the third hole the rangers were asking us to speed up. New course, paid alot and this. Also skip the food. It was extremely average.
Definitely a unique golf experience. I have a love/hate relationship with this course. Not the style of golf of love, but well worth the experience. Lots of fun, frustration and adventure on this course.
Truly one of the most fun and unique golf courses Ive played. They tend to overbook, so prepare for a long round, but it is well worth the wait. First hole is hardest, because there is usually a bunch of people watching you hit... So grip it and rip it! Seriously, if you are in the area and love golf, go play this course!
This course was the most unique course I have ever played. The atmosphere is incredible with some of the best views on a golf course. It was a bit challenging but there was close to no out of bounds which created awesome opportunities for interesting shots. It is on the pricey side but it is money well spent. I had the opportunity to go here as part of a college golf team trip and I highly recommend this course to the average to above average golfer!
Well maintained, beautiful course. Unique challenging layout. A must play. Kind and attentive staff.
Tobacco Road is the best golf experience I have ever had! From booking, to paying, to the range, to the tee, nothing but first class treatment. I will play this course every year, multiple times because of the customer service that our trip had. Jerry at the first tee deserves a raise telling us about the ins and outs about the course. Can’t wait to get back to play knowing all the blind shots! Thank you Tobacco Road for such a great time.
The course is amazing, very unique design. Highly recommend studying the course due to the many blind spots. That being said, after spending $189 dollars on the round, I simply did not feel good/justified for spending that much to play there. I drove up to the first tee at 10:39 for a 10:40 tee time and was told that I would have to drop by the green of the first hole as the group I was joining had already teed off. After confusingly agreeing, I caught up to the group I joined as a single (they had been waiting for two groups ahead them to move forward) and they explained they were rudely rushed to tee off early. From that moment forward we would have to wait for every shot for the rest of the round. I dont know if it was a weekend but they pack as many tee times as they possibly can and rush every one off the tee. After flying across the country one would like to feel good about spending that much for golf. Spent the rest of the trip at Pinehurst, where one feels welcomed the whole time, changed tee times multiple times as I was there for a wedding. Ended up playing the cradle multiple times while grabbing hot dogs and IPAs at the 91st hole there. This to me was a much better experience than tabacco road, which is unfortunate because the course at TR is amazing.
One of a kind layout! Great experience and a super good time. Bring plenty of golf balls because if your hitting it crooked it can be a long day! Would of liked a bit of a discount with most of the fairways plugged and heavily sanded along with portions of a few greens but other than that super track and will definitely be back.
Very enjoyable! Fantastic facilities and golf with a knowledgeable and welcoming staff. However, be forewarned that this is a different type of course than you may be accustomed to Be prepared.
Incredible course. You will be punished at times for making a good shot, prepare yourself for that. Pace of play is an issue, but the experience makes it 5 starts, no question.
One of those places you just have to see for yourself. The hype is real. I’ve played several major championship courses. Tobacco road might never host a pga tour event, but it will forever be entrained in your golf mind.
What a fantastic golf course and experience. Service and employees were outstanding. A must play course!
Bucketlist course. Pristine conditions and one hell of a challenge. Cant wait to play it again.
Course was in great shape. Plush fairways and fast greens. Challenging but great fun.
I’ve played many great courses over the years. This is my favorite by far. Tobacco Road is a special place. The course is always in immaculate shape, the greens are perfect in speed and condition. But most of all, it’s how this course is carved out in the beautiful Sandhills of North Carolina. I can truly say, there is nothing like it! If you’re on a golf trip to Pinehurst, this is a must for your agenda. 30 min door to door, you will be amazed.
Always a favorite place to play. The course is always in good condition and the staff is very helpful with tips on the course.
Loved everything about this course. If you love a course that rewards imagination, accuracy and a good sense of humor then you have to play this masterpiece. Warning, if you are a bomb & gouge golfer, or you struggle off the tee - bring plenty of balls.
Great course - difficult - Martha, Chris & Jordan - along with the kitchen & pro shop staff (and the beer cart girl) were awesome. Such a great day!
Very beautiful well maintained course, some pin positions were impossible to get it close, but as me and my buddy discussed, it was expected and you couldnt complain. I feel if you played it a few times and knew youre spots and distances its very get able, awesome track.
One of the top courses in the Pinehurst area. Get a caddie and have a blast. You wont regret it!
Eye catching scenery all designed to trick you into thinking this course is too challenging. Stay focused because she is waiting for you to make your mistake! Very enjoyable for all levels. Great staff! Thanks Larry.
Beautiful course! Make sure you get a caddie though.
Was excited to play because I had heard great things. Made a last-minute tee time and paid full price ($189). Good course but not worth that unless in immaculate shape.Played 5/3/20 and they just sliced up and sanded the fairways. Most landing areas are 50% sand. I asked when I made the tee time if they had recently punched the greens. Was told no, and while I didnt specifically ask, you would think they would have mentioned the fairways. Also asked if there was a NC resident rate and was told no. No big deal, but apparently theres a discount card for around $330 where you get two rounds and then significant discounts on rounds after that. The people I played with had the card and paid $75. Also no mention of that. I would say in its current shape its worth about that price.Greens were good though some punch marks were evident in certain areas. Im not a greenskeeper, but where there were punch marks, they were not all over the green. Some looked like they punched just one strip. Thats just an observation, though. Greens overall were smooth and quick.Do some research and look around for discounts. Cool/fun layout, but unless its in perfect shape, its not worth more than $100. Maybe my fault for making a last minute time, but I expected better conditions for that price. All that said, I would definitely go back for the right price/conditions combination.
One of the most interestingly designed courses I’ve been on! Absolutely beautiful. The app that you can download for your phone is a must. It’ll show you hole layouts you can’t see from the tee box.
I love it and cant wait to play again. The course was awesome and staff was nice even with some raining going on we were able to play and ride the fairways, awesome place to play.
Mike Strantz was an absolute mad genius. This course is psychotic and I loved every minute of it.
Awesome course in fantastic shape right now. Ive played it four times and it is always exciting.
This course is essentially a funhouse for golfers. It’s layout is one of a kind and unbelievably fun to play. I highly recommend adding this to your list of courses to play if you are in the Pinehurst area for golf.
I have to say this course was absolutely incredible! However there were some things I didnt particularly care for either. I have been wanting to play this course for the last 5 years and it seemed like every time I would try to plan a trip something would come up. Well November of 2019 I finally made it happen. Again, I cannot say enough about the actual course! It was everything I thought it would be and more. I do not think there is another course like it...There may be similar courses but this one was special. It blew my mind to think that someone had actually envisioned what we played. As stated previously there were a few things I didnt care for . First being the driving range. It was kind of a disappointment considering the reputation of the course and the price to play the course. I despise hitting off mats but I understand it is necessary sometimes. It was a very mediocre hitting range that you can find at most muni/cheap courses. The putting greens however were fantastic and really some what prepared you for what you were going to face on the course. The second issue was with figuring out the course and how to navigate it. Even with yardage books and iphone apps it was rather difficult to know where you were suppose to hit and where to drive. There were multiple scenarios were cart paths converged and we had no idea which way to go. Both of these issues caused us to take more time than usual to play our shots. Lastly, I will say of all of these the most important is customer service. While we did not experience bad customer service we did not have a great customer experience when dealing with the staff with the exception of the lady at the grill and one of the rangers. A persons body language, smile and tone all have a big effect on the customer experience. Compared to our previous two days at other courses in the region, this experience was a far cry from the other two. Golfers are what keeps the doors open so I think remembering that would go a long way in the future. Regardless of these 3 issues, I will definitely be back down one day to hopefully get some much needed revenge on the hardest course I have ever played!EDIT - We were not aware that caddies were available....If this is your first time it is a MUST!!! I have played for 20 years and never been so clueless on a course lol
Great golf course. Pace of play on the back 9 was awful, so giving 4 stars instead of 5. Buy a yardage book if you havent played before.
Course is fantastic! A ton of fun to play and in excellent condition.
Very unique layout. Make time to play this course.
I drive from Myrtle Beach to play Tobacco Road.It is worth it every time! Cant wait to play it again! Great staff! The course speaks for itself!!!!
Great golf experience!!
You either love this course or hate it, I love it. Superb conditions, friendly staff. Very pretty course. Hole #14 pictured from back tees. Play with someone who knows course or but distance book.
Great day. Staff were wonderful. Went with group familiar with the course - good thing. Played with same ball - great thing.
Total bucket list masterpiece! Its simply a must play destination.
Tobacco Road is a Mike Strantz design that is a top tier golf experience. Any level of golfer will enjoy a round of golf here. The low handicapper will take risks challenging bunkers on ever hole while high handicappers won’t be penalized because the fairways are wide. A must play in North Carolina.
A real must play golf course and worthy of a golf outing. Many very unique holes and a beautiful use of the land. However if you are a serious golfer and dont like blind shot I suggest you pass.
Without a doubt, this is by far the most beautiful golf courses I have ever played !
Michael Strantz was a genius.
The course has a reputation for being one of the best in America. In the process of running a successful operation, they also support local nonprofit causes such as the Stevens Center. And all the staff, from the caddies to the director, are always cordial and helpful.
16 is the worst hole in America. I liked the course because it was different. Somewhat corky.
Extremely unique golf course, Mike strantz thinks outside the box!!!!
Ive been wanting to play this course for 10 years and it was absolutely everything I had dreamed it would be. Staff was incredible, golf course was completely unique and relentlessly fun with tee box options to make it playable for everyone. Every hole gives a new challenge to think your way through. Rangers were helpful giving us tips on the couple blind shots you had to hit. Really never played anything like it before. A++ experience.
Unique golf experience.
If I could play only one more round of golf, it would be at Tobacco Road.S. AustinMember Since 1991, The Golf Writers Association of America
Outstanding architecture. An experience unlike any other! Pure golf.
I’m still a beginner golfer, and I’ve played in NC, SC, GA, FLA, TN, VA and CO. This is probably the nicest course I’ve ever played. I loved the farm motif. The property was nice, new and very clean. The designers achieved in making you feel like you were stepping back in time in NC’s history, when farming dominated the state’s economy and culture. I liked the tees were named after farm tools, instead of “blues, whites and ladies” tees. For example, the white tees were plows, like you’d see on a small tractor. The fact that the property was converted from a mine made for very challenging play and the elevation changes are not something you would expect to see in the “Sandhills” of NC. Loved the course, but it was very hard to play for a beginner. Don’t let it hold you back though. The staff and other players were very polite and friendly. I’ll be back after some more lessons.
Very unique golf experience, thoroughly enjoyed it
Really unique golf couse. You must play with someone who has played the course before or you will be lost. It was fun
Extremely challenging course. Shot my best score ever here. Enjoyed it tremendously!
Weird layout. Odd holes. Challenging plus plus plus. A unique golf experience worth doing. Just do not expect to score. Near impossible. Second time I played, I did not keep score and took a few do overs and had a blast.
Beautiful course, very challenging. A little pricey but worth every penny
Great golf course
Awesome course and a lot of fun. Id recommend playing it twice as the first round can chew you up but the 2nd round will allow you to show since youll have a better grasp of distances and where to hit the ball. One of my favorite courses in the area.
Brilliant golf purse to play. We played with a group of 12 golfers, and all loved the course (even the ones that didnt play well) Lots of blind holes, so make sure you take a stroke saver, or GPS. Nice location and bar also. Many thanks.
The most beautiful course I have ever played
Great design, very fun course. Cant wait to play again
I played the course for the first time last week. I found the staff to be extremely pleasant and accommodating. For being early spring I thought the course conditions were generally good. The greens were the best, followed by the fairways, then the tee boxes. I, too, found some of the holes to be gimmicky (namely #16) but I still appreciated the course design. We played quickly but I could see how it could be a slog out there with a full tee sheet. Definitely recommend checking it out and would play again.
What a great experience! I recommend a caddie for your first time. At least a fore caddie. This track is tricky. The clubhouse was quaint. And a unique architecture to the entire course, trails and clubhouse.
Really fun course!
Ive always heard how amazing this course is and how hard it is...true on both accounts. Had a blast playing and driving the carts through the sand traps.
Great test of golf. Course was in GREAT condition. Very friendly staff.
Challenging course with multiple blind shots. Asks the golfer to earn their score and rewards well struck shots.Course is in excellent condition as of fall 2019!
If youre thinking of playing at Pinehurst, this course is a great option to consider on your there from Raleigh Durham airport. Its extremely precision focused, lots of iron shots and very visually appealing. Also, I lost my range finder and they mailed it to me bubble wrapped without any extra charge. Top notch service, top notch course.
The most fun course you can play in the Sandhills!
Fun golf course in great shape, staff is very friendly, starter was informative. My only complaint is beer prices. 24 bucks for a 6 pack of bud light.
Played course 3 times. Amazing course shot my lowest score of my life there. Can’t wait to go back. It’s a course that test every part of your game. Makes you a shot maker.
Loved it. Frank Thompson was very helpful. Great experience.
Brilliantly creative, wonderfully imaginative. Nothing else like it. When you tee it up on #1, you will say, oh my! Be prepared to say it 17 more times.
I have played this course about 6 times and always have a great time here. Staff is always friendly and course is always in great shape. Its a tough one so bring your A+ game. Buy a yardage book or download the app it really helps as there are many blind shots. This course is visually stunning and a true work of art in my opinion. Dont pass up a chance to play this course!
Play this course once or twice each year, like it more everytime. Layout is like no other, the conditions are always great and the employees are always more than helpful. Highly recommend tobacco road to anyone golfing in the area.
Had the most amazing experience at Tobacco Road. The course is fair and will reward good play, but it requires strategic thinking, discipline and good execution. Our group stayed in Stewart Cabin, which is totally unique and made our Tobacco Road Golf experience unlike any other course we have stayed at. Stewart Cabin is perfectly appointed for a golf trip. It may appear rustic from the outside, but its golf fabulous on the inside. I would highly recommend staying in Stewart Cabin to anyone who is planning a trip to Tobacco Road. The entire trip exceeded our expectations!
A totally different golf experience. A little bit gimmicky, but we had a great time. Pace of play was really good. Elevations and waste areas we’re interesting.
Challenging, smooth rolling well kept greens, visually pleasing.... #16 is a B@$×h
Fun course and well maintained!
A unique and wonderfully designed course. Great conditions and great staff combine for a top shelf guest experience...my favorite!!!
Great course! Alot of fun but very challenging for a novice golfer
Whats the best way to describe this course? Ill go with rugged. Sharp mounds, wavy fairways, small crazy greens. This course is a lot of fun if you know where youre hitting (they have a yardage book on the free app) but probably a nightmare if youre not accurate with your irons. Personally I thought some of the course was overly contrived and un-natural, but it is much better than 90% of all golf courses.
What a great place to play. Visually a thrill.
Very overrated..... maybe 80$ to play this course not 168.00. No seed for divets course is starting to look torn up. Theres no map of the course so if you havent played it before make sure u pair with someone who has. Ive played over 100 course and I was excited to play tobacco. Very disappointed. Waste of money
Awesome course, a fun filled roller coaster !
Fun course, nice change of pace from Pinehurst style layouts.
