With Covid restrictions pressing us down again, its nice to be able to have a night at the movies. The drive- in is open, showing movies with precautions in place for social- distancing. My husband and I were able to pretend that our date night was somewhat normal. Ive always loved the drive in, but Im able to appreciate it even more these days.
Legit old school drive in, with the new feature of broadcasting audio over FM radio. The locals bring their block rocker stereos and play them outside the car for everyone to hear.Everything you remember from the drive in... Sitting outside cars in lawn chairs, horns going off, cars pulling in late and headlights shining in your eyes, even planes flying overhead. If you go in with the right state of mind, youre going to have a good time.Last but not least, the concession stand is old school with 1990s prices. We got two large popcorns, two theater size candies, a hot dog and large drink for $24. Makes for a good time.
Drive in movie theaters will always have a soft spot in my heart.Sunset is simple, shows first run movies, has a fairly priced snack bar, and has lots of room. Thanks for figuring out how to stay open during covid.
Had a great time watching the Croods with the whole family. Loved every second of it. Recommend to any and everybody!
Pretty cool, first time going to a drive in. Plenty of space for cars in the spacious empty lot, and tickets super cheap at $10 pp for both movies. Popcorn and a drink were like $6. We watched BTTF and ET and had a good time. Keep your lights off, or flick on and off as you need to, so youre not disturbing folks while trying to find a spot to park (like we did). Very dark and no lighting over there.
It was like stepping back in time. The fun and excitement as each SUV or pick-up truck arrived and backed up to the huge Sunset Drive-In screen. Moms and dads set up chairs and pulled out blankets and coolers, kids ran around while waiting for the movie to start. Standing in line to get yummy popcorn and drinks was fun as the countdown to the movie began. Sound quality excellent. Every parking spot had a great view. Enjoy!!!!!
I attended both Drive-in concerts of Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton’s. My personal opinion Blake’s was far better than Garth’s. My thoughts are that Garth’s intro band was to long and the fact that Garth had to do a lot of editing to his performance to make it appear better sucked because going to a concert is to get the vibes of a raw performance. Now Blake’s performance was awesome no out takes and what he said was real. Loved the show. My opinion though.
The drive in is fun. Its nice to park your car and use lawn chairs. Bring blankets because it gets cold. Snack bar is reasonable on prices. You can bring your own but help them out by at least getting something. Bathrooms are meh.
It was super fun to go to a drive in again. The screen was great and the parking lot was well maintained. Only issue I had was it is an ALL cash experience. Cash to get in and cash for the snack bar.
Sold at the swap meet. It was pretty ghetto. When you first set up the other vendors get the first look before the crowd comes in. I was missing about 10 items by the time the crowd of them left my area. Mostly junk there .
I came here before and had a good experience with everything. We came back for a quick weekend trip along with my sister who was excited to see the movies. Only to find out when we got there they weren’t playing the movies because of a Metallica event. It was never disclaimed on Facebook that this would be the only thing playing on Aug. 29th. It sucks because there was no other day to watch the movies since we were only staying for a night.
Great deals! Friendly vendors. Fun to antique sift. Located next to an old graveyard.
We have not been to a drive in movie in a long time but we had a great time and will be looking forward to our next movie!
Great place to bring friends or family to an escape to the past! Staff is friendly and prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend!
Metallica concert was epic. Social distancing stuff is in place. A good place to take the kids in pjs to catch movies.
Great place to enjoy watching a movie and still be able smoke 420...
I havent been to a drive-in in decades. Really took me back. Friendly staff, solid projection, and a good time
I love this place!! Its the perfect spot for date night. Family night, or girls or guys night out!! I have been coming to see movies here with friends, lived ones and various other groups of colorful SLO locals my entire lifetime. -its never super crowded, you can gab as loud as you want to, leave your ringer on your cell phone on, and consume whatever treats you can fit in your cooler!! Also, its about half the cost per person compared to seeing a flick in the seated theatres....But yes, in high school, someone was always hiding in the trunk anyways ....i highly recomend going to the drive-in, at least a couple of times, just because its so very different than the alternative. Oh! And they always play 2 movies back to back!
This Drive In is worth the entertainment! The cover is $10.00 for (each) adults and children 11 and under are $4.00. It would be good to get here early as people start lining up an hour before the show begins; as early as 6:00PM, doors open at 7:30. Oh yea, important: CASH ONLY guys. They do offer an ATM in their fair priced snack bar, though. During the social distant way of life, the workers have been very patient, polite and have ensured to keep the place clean. The restrooms were presentable and clean with enough safety covers and soap to ensure washing hands and cleaning/hygiene protection is available during COVID-19s precautions. Also, bring blankets because it gets chilly out here being that we are not far from Pismo and other beaches nearby. The Super Sunday Swap Meet is still NOT going due to restrictions reflecting COVID-19. Overall, its always pleasant to come visit this place.
Almost Halloween. And wouldnt be nice to watch Hocus Pocus for a chance from Oct.23-31
Love the pizza, the hot dogs, the sodas and the price is great! One of the few remaining charming gems of the Central Coast.
I love this place. Fantastic price, Great snack bar, friendly service . Good Times.
Cheap. A great experience every time. Even if its not a movie youre dying to see go because its so nice to chill with some friends with food, fuzzy blankets, the stars and a good movie!
Metallica ROCKED! SO MJCH FUN Thank you Sunset Drive in for hosting this eventStop burning the popcorn hehe
This is a must. There is nothing like going to the drive in. And the people are nice to. You do need to go.
Always a fun time for the kids! Great little treat, especially during the Covid-19 limitations on getting out of the house with the kids.
Amazing this is still around. Nostalgic drive-in...
Great place to see 2 movies, safely, for just $10
We love Sunset Drive-In. Plan to go there all summer. People are awesome. Bathrooms clean. Great place to go.
Fantastic place, inexpensive and fun. The experience of a drive-in is unique and hard to find now. The young man at the snack lobby was friendly and fast to serve, he was professional and absolutely made our experience better with his wit and fun antics. My issue that took a star off was the bathrooms were just nasty. Not a huge issue, but if you intend to stay for both feature films, you will most likely use the restroom.
Was really fun recomend forsure
Great spot, just make sure your car battery is in good health.
Loved watching Shrek here Sunday night. It was a blast!
Bright picture great food friendly employees. A great night
Such a fun place for families, great price on movies too️. This is a MUST of you have never been!
Old school family fun.
Ive never been to a drive in theater before but I would definitely go back. They had speakers to rent since our car had auto lights. Plenty of options for food and drinks
I love the drive in! So much better than sitting in a movie theater and you can bring all the food you want. The snack bar could use some work and that should really make my overall rating a 3 or 4 but I still enjoy the drive in too much to reduce it. They are extremely slow but a tiny bit more reasonably priced than a regular theater. I definitely prefer just bringing in my own food. They dont have speakers at the cars any more so you have to be able to use your stereo. Last time we had some weird feedback going on and they let me borrow a handheld radio. It got the same feedback when I reached our location, so I dont know what was going on that night. Ive never experienced it before but found out they do have radios you can use if needed. Ive also found out they can jump start your vehicle if your battery dies.
Fantastic retro experience. Great price, good popcorn. You have far more control over your viewing experience (for better and for worse). The only problem is people who dont understand how their cars headlights operate.
I was there at the end of September 2019 during a road trip in California. That was a really nice experience. Prices are affordable, staff is friendly, the movie was great. Id like to come more often but its a little bit to far from France! :-)
An excellent, old school drive-in. Been there close to a dozen times and always enjoy the place!
I really enjoyed this nostalgic experience from the Lets all go to the lobby commercials to the friendly (and funny) staff. 9/10 would recommend, the only point off is for the fact that your car battery takes a beating.
I went here with some friends to watch onward and it was awesome! Would recommend going.
Excellent! Lots of space and tasty . Great way to preserve Americana.
We love this place! It’s one of the only out door drive ins in California!! Love the Sunday Swap Meet! Remember the owners living under the big screen! On Sundays, she would be out there selling home grown plants, not cause she needed the money but because she loved to chit chat with the people. I wish the people that sell there would abide by the rules and take their trash & unsold to GoodWill instead of dumping it on the site for the managers to clean up! Quit ruining a good thing!!. ️Sunset Drive in
Swap meeting in the movies who doesnt like swap meets and movies you have to be anti-americans and not like swap meets and movies
Love it here! Been coming here for 25 years now, hoping for at least 25 more
SUPPER fun experience. Try to get there early for good seats and bring blankets! The screen is a little dim depending on how far back you sit.
NOSTALGIC! As one, of only 17, of Americas remaining drive-in theaters, this is an experience that you should definitely take advantage of while its still here. The cost is only $10/adult and the staff is friendly. They play 2 movies, that you watch from the comfort of your own vehicle, and there is an intermission between the 2 so that you can go to the concession stand or the restroom. I brought my partner up from L.A. so that she could experience this, at least once in her lifetime.
Great way to experience movies with friends and family.
This is one of the view drive ins left! They have a place to get food and drinks but I brought my own. 2 movies for the price of 1 and you can have your own picnic, bring blankets, pillows and get cozy. It creates good times and good memories.
My girlfriend and I went here with some friends on a chilly July night to watch Toy Story 4 and Aladdin. This drive-in is probably one the best drive-in movie theaters left in the US. Ive been to a few and this one was the best. The concessions are reasonably priced and it was only $10 per person for two new films. Its a great family environment. Well go back and you should go when its playing a movie the whole family wants to see. Just do it and you wont regret it.
Its a great experience. And the movie choices are awesome.
Its a drive in from the 60s. Cash only business. They need to add credit card payment.i dont use cash.
Fun place to go with the kids. A few tips: its cash only so make sure to bring enough for your tickets and concessions. You can bring your own food in but its nice to support the concession stand so this place stays in business. Drive-ins are a dying breed so lets keep ours! Get there early especially on weekends to get a good spot. Gate opens an hour before the first show. It gets chilly at night so wear layers and bring blankets. We like to park backwards with the hatchback open so we bring an FM portable radio to listen to the movie otherwise you need to use your car radio. Its also nice to bring some camping chairs to sit outside of the car. The screen is showing a bit of wear and tear and could use a refresh but even with that its a great deal to see two recently released movies for $10 per adult and $4 for children 5-11. Plus you can bring your dog(s) as long as they stay in the car or on a leash.
The drive in is back! The only positive thing to come out of covid 19
One of the best last remaining drive - ins
This is the only “drive-in” that I know of locally that still shows movies. And, on Sundays is a great little swap meet! Good food for breakfast!
Cant beat watching a movie under the stars! Staff was very friendly, prices reasonable. Just a fun experience for all!
Sunday swap meet not bad to sell your stuff cheap. Normally a good variety can be found.
Great experience! Metalica Rocked!
The movies and the snacks are really good I rate this 5 stars
Absolut stunning experience! When you arrive 10 or 15 minutes early you can choose a very good spot. Personally I am a lover of the 3rd Row in the middle, because you can see the whole screen perfectly aligned to your front window!
Nice was to spend a summer time evening in SLO.
Its really nice to find a drive in theatre still open. Be aware that it is cash only. Every one around us seemed very courteous with keeping their lights off and the noise down. The image is decent and bright and the radio signal was clear. Very enjoyable experience that people may not be lucky enough to try for themselves some time in the future.
Always so much fun! Love watching a movie at the Drive-In!
One of the few places left you can experience the magic of a drive in movie. Tune into the audio with your radio and enjoy, $10 per adult kids 4 and under free. Usually they play 2 movies the second film plays a bit late for most kids but still a fun date night. Go there on Sunday for the flea market maybe find yourself some treasure, good produce snack bar and an atm if you found a gem and didnt bring enough cash.
Its great to have a local drive-in! Ive gone several times and will continue to go for newly released movies. They have a snack bar inside with a good selection. A little pricey, but I dont mind. I do wish they had their own website to update movies playing and general information (such as ticket prices and the cash only policy). I do agree having a cash only sign near the entrance is a good idea too. Overall though I love this drive-in and I hope it stays open!
Happy to have one of the few in the country close to home! Great place to take the kiddos!
Great drive in, food service could be a bit faster.
This place is great for something to do after dark
Love coming here with my family. Great for kids that don’t do will in the theatre.
Great For going On the week ends to go and sell and make good money. Being a client and buying in the Swap Meet, good variety of items being sold at cheap prices. Movies are great so long as you get a good parking and a good radio. Creates a Nice romantic mood.
Fantastic setting, old-timey concession and car stalls give this a nostalgic feel while still playing modern flicks with good quality audio played through cars radio and great projected visuals. Thanks sunset drive in for a beautiful evening
Great place to watch movies if you have young kids. Fun family time. Great snack shop. Love the fresh pop corn. They also habe whole pizzas for those of you with a large family or just going with a large group.
My family and I went to the swap meet Sunday morning. We had a nice time walking around and checking out the people selling their goods . The only complaint we had were the outhouses area the hand washing area had no paper towels to dry up with and it was a chilly morning . Not a comfortable feeling drying you freezing hands on my pants .
Always have a good time with the family. But for it being summer and how busy it was tonight, they need more people or quicker staff members to run the snack bar. Lady behind counter is way too slow for this job!
Great movie drive in experience with an updated modern touch! Classic movie drive-in, cash only, snack bar, classic ads and the sound broadcasts through your vehicles radio so you can turn it up as loud as you want.
What a fun throwback night! Make sure your car battery is fully charged though.
I love this place! The parking spots are raised so the front of your car is facing more toward the movie screen so you can see better and if you want to back into the space its perfect for a hatchback car or for a truck. Make sure you have a stereo that works and can tune into the radio station for the movie so you can hear, a car stereo, a boom box.... whatever works. One thing I wouldnt recommend is getting an iPhone radio app to try and find the radio station, I struggled with that for a long time and couldnt find the station and I had tried 6 different apps. I dont know but if you have a Sirius XM radio subscription and you download the app on your phone maybe it could work, but if you have Sirius XM in your car then i dont know why you would take the time to download the app if you havent already and log in when its a few presses, twists and clicks away with your car stereo. I recommend getting there at least 30 to an hour early because everyone tries to get front row seats. And if you have a running classic car definitely bring it because it makes it more fun and its even better if its a convertible.
I was there for the swap meet. I sold my stuff and had some fun!
Been going here for many years. Great drive in theater. Prices are great, around $8 per adult which includes both movies they are showing. Parking lot is very large and offers lots of places to watch the movies from. They have restrooms on sight. The consession stand is decent and offers your typical movie theater foods and a few more. The spots up front have wired speakers but they also broadcast on FM radio so you can use your car speakers.
Great, easy going, fair to good screen
Fantastic way to spend an evening!
Takes me back when I was a kid. We dont have a drive in where I live, so I dont mind driving 2 and a half hrs to watcha a double feature.
Great family tradition. We are blessed to have two operating drive-in movie theaters here on the Central Coast. Great family atmosphere. Great value. Wonderful memories. Always fun as a group too. Bring a blanket and bundle up a little because is can get chilly on some nights. Still theres nothing like it. Its super fun :-)
Whats not to love about the nostalgia of a drive in! Staff are always super friendly and its always a great deal! 2 movies for the price of 1! Plus, your own private area (ur vehicle) to enjoy the movie.
Blake Shelton concert was great.
Sunset Drive-In is the greatest. Scored the Lion King and Toy Story 4 double feature opening night. Awesome venue. Can get chilly so lots of blankets and comfy stuff.
The experience is as good as the people around you. Usually a very pleasant experience, most people are respectful and courteous re: their headlights and making noise, etc. Lots of snacks available or bring your own. Wish the bathrooms were nicer. Recommend instructing people to get it her wait in single file or tell everyone that both lanes are open at ticket booth, nothing worse than waiting in the single file when a bunch of late people show up and jump in the vacant lane and get served first :(
Great original drive in movie theater. I absolutely love it. I saw Aladdin and Captain Marvel. Theres a snack bar too. Great, big screen. You can hear well, too. Pretty cheap, as far as drive-ins and movies go. Make sure you bring cash because it is cash only. I recommend bringing some snacks and getting refreshments at the snack bar. You should definitely check this place out. Hands down one of my favorite drive-ins.
Possible one of the best places to be on a summer night. Great for kids of all ages. Equally as awesomefor adults. Fantastic place for family night fun.
Best Drive-In but they need to spend some money on cleaning the bathrooms and remodeling
Like watching movies, but don’t want to miss out on that beautiful sunset? Then help revive the glorious industry that are family-run drive-in movie theaters! Featuring two feature films, the Sunset Drive-In is a classic Central Coast attraction. Near Madonna Inn, the drive-in feature in car audio and a massive screen perfect for families with kids or couples that want to get...closer. Bring your favorite treats or support the local snack bar, they have all the favorites you could want. With the weather always good in SLO, you’ll be sure to have an amazing time. Pro tip: get there at least 20 minutes before opening, car begin to line up early, especially with popular films during the summer months. Enjoy a classic of SLO!
This was my first drive in movie experience and I loved it. It was a little pricey for the experience but nonetheless still a great experience.
