Serene and beautiful location. The stain glass on the church is a master piece. Its centrally located and lovely place to visit. There is a labyrinth which is a nice thing to just walk to feel peaceful.
Really great and famous cathedral with unforgettable vibe. You can go inside without guide and also without fee. But if you want, you can pay a voluntary fee by your card. The inside looked amazing and there was also some modern elements like animation projection. This place should be definitely on your places to visit in SF.
Great worship today at 11am. The extended service felt very traditional in many ways. The coffee hour was very welcoming for serving such a large congregation. I was able to catch a tour right after coffee hour where I learned a lot about the church and art within it. The only things about the service I would have liked to see changed were the less traditional lords prayer, post communion prayer, and that they did not use the traditional 4 bell for the moments after do this in remembrance of me. It seemed like an extended traditional service with less traditional rites being used.
This cathedral is beautiful, situated in the nice neighborhood of Nob Hill. It reminds me of the ones you find in Europe although this one is more simple than those. Anyway, it’s a great place full of spiritual meaning. We visited it during Christmas time, there are many concerts available through different days. There was also a beautiful Christmas tree decorated with origami and with written wishes. Just magical!
Grace Cathedral is an enormous, beautiful Cathedral, nicely located on one of San Fransiscos several heights. The walls are covered with murals telling the story of San Fransisco. Between the murals are wood carvings for the Via Dolorosa meditation. The Church has great accoustics, and is often used for larger concerts. There is also an AIDS Interfaith Memorial chapel with a stunning triptych by Keith Haring. A wonderful, spiritual place.
Nice architecture cathedral. This specific cathedral is so beautiful inside and outside. I got many good things from this cathedral. Thank God for making me find this cathedral.
Grace Cathedral is another gem in San Francisco is located on Nob Hill and is breathtaking. When we visited this magnificent Cathedral, it was undergoing some renovations, but what we seen was enough to make us want to come back. While limited we were able to take a few worthwhile pictures to share. We wanted to enjoy the labyrinths but ran out of time and can not wait to return to explore and enjoy their meditative qualitys. Make sure you allow enough time to take in all of this magnificent church.
6/5 stars for Yoga on the Labyrinth. Its every Tuesday at 6:15 pm. Even being 20 minutes early, it was a little hard to find a place to put our mats, so shoot for 30 minutes early to get a spot! Suggested donation is $10-$20. From what I saw, I believe you can also rent a mat at the cathedral if you dont have one. There are yoga instructors walking through the cathedral that provide support with positioning during the yoga practice. The instructor guiding through the yoga flow directs everyone over a microphone, and does not demonstrate, so if you dont know the names of the positions just cheat off your yoga neighbors :). There is a live musician and it added SO much to the yoga practice. The cathedral can be a bit cold at the beginning so bring a light jacket. I personally shed my jacket a few minutes into the yoga session. Parking can be really difficult, so plan for extra time to look for street parking. There are also parking garages at both Grace Cathedral and across the street at The Masonic if you dont feel like hunting down the coveted street parking! Beautiful building and a beautiful experience!
I love to visit churches on any trip I go to. This has got to be on my top 5. Amazing church with lots of historic value. Amazing ceilings, window art, and also have 2 labyrinth. Must visit.
Omg such an impressive Gothic Cathedral. It is a must visit!!!The architecture is amazing and worth the trip if you are around.Dont miss it!
A truly stunning Cathedral. Got the chance to see it lit up at night and it was beautiful. Walk around and see it from all angles if you can.
So much going on with this church. I think I need a day here to really see it all. Beautiful church for photography.
Fantastic place of worship and gathering. Epicenter of Nob Hill. The maze is cool. The school is great. Massive cavern of prayer.
Graceful architecture & very beautiful structure! It took about 54 years to restore (1910-1964) this beautiful place and one can see why! The symmetry of the arches and the glass work on the windows is one of the best Ive seen so far. A must see place while in SF. The entrance door has some story to tell. The wooden carvings in the main hall inside is simply outstanding. We couldnt spend time here as it was late but will visit again around day time to admire it more.
Beautiful cathedral that has a museum feel. You can spend easily an hour here reading all of the plaques around the inside. Free to enter with a small donation if you wish. A must visit in San Francisco.
If you come to San Francisco, you cannot miss this beautiful place!! I felt so peaceful, the amazing and colorful stained glass, the paintings, The labyrinth everyone walks around... I loved it, I actually visited it twice!!
A Beautiful church, full of ancient stories on the wall, and a huge one that lies in the middle of the town. The mass setting is well organized and beautified by angelic voiced choir. Illumination in thr beginning of mass could have been lit more up to let us read well. People are helpful here.
Very beautiful Gothic cathedral that really looks like a European Gothic cathedral, though it has apparently been made out of concrete rather than stones to withstand earthquakes. The inside is quite astonishing as well. Indeed, it is full of interesting paintings.
Depending on where youre staying (Im assuming youre walking here from downhill) its a nice workout to get up to the Cathedral. Very nice grounds, places to sit and contemplate. Dont expect solitary meditation time & the labarynth was less than we thought. Still good views and a peaceful atmosphere.
Third largest French Gothic style cathedral in the US. This magnificent icon sits atop Nob Hill like a crown. Definitely worth the the hike. The labyrinth inside makes for great meditating. And the donation box accepts credit cards
Really no words can describe but this place is beautiful. Everytime I come here I leave with the most Joy ever even if I just sit a few minutes. The angels are definitely present indeed. Even if you are not Christian Catholic or don’t even believe in Jesus it’s still a breathtaking and marvelous place architecturally. You don’t need to schedule anything or even come to a service just drop in at your own time. It’s peaceful and free.
Beautiful Church near Huntington Park
I made the hike up from Market Street to California Street to take pictures of the Grace Cathedral for my wife. What do you know, I made it in time for Easter Sunday Mass. I honestly cant remember the last time I went to church. It was standing room only, being that it was Easter Sunday. Fortunately I was there early to get a seat. It was quite the experience with the full choir, band, and the organ playing amongst the masses. A gem in the heart of San Francisco.
Grace Cathedral is a special place. It’s not just a religious edifice; it’s a community gathering place as well.GC has many activities serving the people who visit. They have events such as a lecture series with famous people. There is yoga on Tuesday evenings. There are job search support groups using the meeting rooms. The outdoor courtyards are used for social events and wedding parties. When you visit, you may be stunned by the physical size of the interior. The murals depict interesting religious and historical themes. The stained glass windows allow sunlight to shine in causing in some places a rainbow of colors to dance on the floor.A famous feature is the exact replica of the Gates of Paradise doors (of the Baptistery in Florence, Italy) in the center exterior of the cathedral front. These doors are bronze and beautiful 3-dimensional figures seeming to be leaping off the surface. There is a small labyrinth in the outside courtyard which you can stroll along. The larger labyrinth inside the church can be meditative to walk through. What’s really cool is that GC accepts all people to attend services at the church irregardless of the religion you choose to identify with, irregardless of ethnicity and irregardless of sexual orientation. This Anglican church personifies what San Francisco is: open-minded and accepting. We are all humans in the eyes of God. I’m so proud that this cathedral (which was built after the 1906 earthquake at its present location) is in my neighborhood. I call this house my spiritual home. It can be home for you as well. The doors are open to all. We welcome the world.
Beautiful church. So solemn and very inviting to pray. I hope more people would visit this church as it looks more of like a museum rather than a house for prayer.
Amazing cathedral! The mix of classic and modern elements, the vibes, the art and the music they all create a very special atmosphere
Amazing place in SF! Closest thing to European cathedrals
2 of my friends passed away and we had a mass there. The lady priest was excellent. Im not really big on going to church too often but she gave the service in a way that I cant explain I actually understood it shes great
Great cathedral! Definitely worth to visit.
Is this the church where they filmed Bullitt starring Steve McQueen back in 1967?
Until just last week I have never been inside Grace Cathedral. I am going to return soon to photograph it properly and drink in the delicious quiet and serenity.
First visit. I went for a friends memorial service in a side chapel. What an amazing building. It should be in the top ten things to do when in SF. Stunning windows and stonework on the interior. Stunning. Feels like you are in Europe. A must see for everyone.
Beautiful architecture and one of my favorite places to walk to in San Francisco. Amazing views of the bay in the neighborhood around the church.
One of must visit place in San Fran. Located north west from Union square, 30 min walk up the hill. This is a beautiful cathedral. Went Saturday when there’s live piano playing. Very peaceful.Designed in French Gothic style by Lewis P. Hobart, it was completed in 1964 as the third largest Episcopal cathedral in the nation. On March 28, 1965, Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a sermon at Grace Cathedral as part of the festival celebrating its completion and consecration.Make sure check out the Labyrinth: Laid out on the floor of Grace Cathedral is a labyrinth that is based on the famous medieval labyrinth of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres (The Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres), if a visitor walks the pattern of the labyrinth it will bring them to a meditative state. There is also another labyrinth outside of the cathedral in its courtyards. There are two large music light hanging on either side - it lighten up while music is playing. really beautiful.
A must see if youre a cathedral seeker. The Thursday night mens choir was just beautiful.
Very beautiful. You cant help but feel great emotion.
Beautiful and peaceful chapel to visit. The architecture is fantastic.
Grace Cathedral really reinvented the soul, depth and love of community in an amazingly historic place. I continue to be amazed at the events they put on. They have made the beauty of community and love modern with the collection of events they take on. I recently attended a sound meditation at Grace Cathedral — simply amazing.
Beautiful architecture, inside and out. A peaceful place to sit and take in the beauty in a busy city.
The oldest Grace Cathedral is really amazing!
Beautiful Labyrinth, and a meditative space️
The design and decor of this church is absolutely magnificent. I was there when there was no service in session and found the stroll through its aisles and corridors a nice, peaceful experience. I cant say I agree with the actual ideals of the church, but visually it is good.
Not a fan of organized religion or religion at all for that matter. Just to stop and see an amazing building this was worth seeing. The church has a very interesting history of supporting minority populations. They were early supporters of civil rights and gay rights. They were worked with communities during the early days of Aids in the 1980s it is a very interesting place plus it is very easy to take amazing pictures here.
Gorgeous Church on Nob Hill. It reminded me of Notre Dame in Paris and later I found out they both belonged to the same French Gothic style. It’s Ghiberti doors are exquisite - replicas of the doors of the Florence Baptistery
Absolutely a must see... gorgeous stained glass and architecture..
Spiritual space with modern thoughts and openness.
Life time experience, work of an art building . Sacred and deeply energetic feel blessed
Beautiful building. Wheelchair accessibility through side entrance. Plan for at least 30 mins to look through.
Amazing structure.. I loved it!
Pretty impressive on the outside. Inside isnt bad. They do yoga classes here which is pretty cool.
Peaceful, allows one to be with their thoughts in a profound way!
This doesnt look great from outside if you happen to live near some of Europes biggest and oldest cathedrals. In fact, even without comparing, its ... well, grey.Inside is more interesting and worth a look while youre in the neighbourhood.
Prayers to the Parisiens, and everyone who loves Notre Dame. We are blessed to have Grace Cathedral in beautiful condition.
Amazing. Juz like the one in Paris.Spent 2 hrs here. Peaceful.
One of the finest church in San Francisco downtown. It’s situated on nobhill right opposite to fairmont hotel.
This is a beautiful chapel on top of a hill in San Francisco. Inside and out, the architecture is just beautiful.
Beautiful 20th century gothic concrete and steel cathedral
Such a beautiful Church. Rose window glows at night, and beautiful wooden carved doors. For meditation, there is a labyrinth out front
An historic cathedral with two labyrinths, chapels, murals, stained glass, organ and a host of programs, Grace Cathedral is a functioning parish in the Episcopalian denomination. In addition to daily masses, the offerings for the public include music concerts, labyrinth walks, meditation and prayer groups and more. The architecture is spectacular and well worth a visit to this grand treasure.
The Grace Cathedral IMHO truly reflects the culture of California and the Bay Area--a perfect blend of spirituality, heritage, humanity and science. The story that I heard about its site from a local guide (Free Tours by Foot) was quite interesting. Before your enter from the side door, pay attention to the beutiful ceremonial entrance door at the center, which I believe is a replica of the famous door from a cathedral in Florence, Italy.Inside, I was pleasantly surprised to see the stained glass art depicting Einstein, Astronauts, etc at a place of worship.A wall/door painted with spiritual symbols from different religions, and a wall painting depicting the first site of United Nations are worth mentioning. If possible, try walking the entire path of the labyrinth on the floor inside the cathedral and empty your thoughts.A must visit place if you are in San Francisco.
I just love this place of GOD .
There is so much to appreciate about Grace Cathedral. It’s a magnificent place of peace and beauty. In addition to spiritual nourishment, I enjoyed yoga, indoor and outdoor labyrinth walks, Jacob’s Dream: A Luminous Path, created by Benjamin Bergery and Jim Campbell, and art installation, Les Colombes by Michael Pendry. I visited nearly every day during my SF visit. So much goodness.
Super nice cathedral! It only took me a few minutes to check out the inside but it was definitely worth it.
Best place to go for Christmas carols! Loved every bit of it. It is a steep walk so be prepared but once you reach there the views are amazing!
A gracious and peaceful place. You get very soothing feelings when inside the place.
This place is beautiful. It looks like youre not allowed to enter cause its so beautiful. But you can. They have a fun little online app game got can play where you learn about the church and its history.
Gorgeous. We went for an evensong service.
Beautiful church with awesome stained Windows.
Advent service was amazing. Choir were fantastic. Hats off to Director of Music and the whole choir. We attended the service as visitors from Bangor Abbey in Northern Ireland where we sing in the choir and were blown away. Beautiful building too.
Ive only visited this place from the outside because usually I am on a bicycle when Im in this area. There are really a lot of very nice hill climbs that one can summit to reach this beautiful cathedral. One day, Ill have to bring a bike lock and visit the inside.
Wonderful Choral Evensong sung in the Quire at 5:15pm on Thursdays. Sit up near the organ and choir to best enjoy the renowned Choir of Men and Boys. Free and open to everyone.
Its a beautiful and welcoming place. Very peaceful.
An amazing, spiritual place. Amazing architecture and staind glass windows throughout the building. Beautiful works of religious art, a must drop in to visit and take in the beautiful architecture.
Perfect place for catholics
Attended the Christmas day service with Family. Visiting here for the first time all the way from India. Beautiful Cathedral, fantastic Choir and lovely service. Blessed !
Beautiful place. Lo e the fact that its a church made for all religions and believes.
This is the first cathedral I’ve been in and it was a beautiful religious experience. The glass decor is beautiful and the church itself is magnificently built.
Beautiful and spectacular Victorian architectural style cathedral!Every 2nd Friday of the month they host a candlelight labyrinth walkaccompanied by live music. Awakening the spirit
Very GRACEful architecture. Exactly what you expect from a grand cathedral. Despite being on a loud street corner, it is very peaceful to visit this place. Very nice location with a view from the hill top.
Amazing
This is an amazing church and a great place to visit. The stained glass is so impressive
Great San Francisco Landmark! Everyone should visit Grace Cathedral at least once in their lives! Historic and unforgettable!
Beautiful. Picture: Easter Sunday 2019
Beautiful church on hill top.
A modern cathedral that looks like a very old cathedral
This is a church with history and you feel it inside. The building is monolithic and beautiful, especially in the morning and in the afternoon when the sun flows through the stained glass.
Lovely, peaceful, Graceful space.
Beautiful outside, and breath taking inside!
Such a pretty church with a cute park across the street
Karma Moffet singing bowls and labrynth walk - last two photos.
Nice place to kwnow, the cathedral has a lot of beautiful details
Popped in while staying in the area. Welcoming and peaceful.
We had the pleasure of watching Choir of Men and Boys at Grace Cathedral during Christmas and it was magical.
The cathedral was spectacular and the labrinth was fun to walk. The ladder art was interesting especially when viewed at the alter area. The stained glass was exceptional and the classic ceiling height opened you up the spiritual possibilities. You will enjoy the experience.
The shows they run here are really cool! I saw a great organ show. The place is also very pretty
Great place to get in contact with God beautiful inside very spiritual place thank you Lord
