Since the virus, everyone has had to move to outdoor seating and some of the best service Ive received so far was at Basin 141 in Montrose. David and Christina helped me and were above and beyond accommodating. They were amazing! Im glad the place is still up and running! Keep up the good work :)
Been here many times over the years - love the quiz nights and ordering fish & chips at the bar from chip shop across the street - nice UK beer selection too
As big as a big closet and as cozy as Christmas morning. Chilled Chimay blue--along with a small list of other well-chosen beers--flows freely. Cheese plates all night long. The clientele seem to be undergoing an unusual, collective identity crisis, all wondering whether they belong in Berkeley or the Marina. Bartenders are friendly and so genuine. Though the Black Horse isnt quite in North Beach, drinking here made me feel like Id stepped into old Beat San Francisco.
Really nothing but great experiences here, so I will be back. Feeling here is similar to a place in Columbus I liked.
Very relaxing atmosphere, good beer choices and fish chips on order. Chat with Alan the barman hes an interesting guy.
Cheep beer. Delicious chips. Low-key place with the best dj in town !!! Haggis ahoy
Can’t really beat the prices... “outside” smoking area which is pretty much indoors, pool table and a venue upstairs with comedy. Fun spot
Classy vibe, pool table, smoking room, Scottish style pub with DJ every Saturday.
I found it a little too busy for my tastes, but it was still a pretty good bat to hang out in.
Place is a pretty nice dive bar. Great comedy club up stairs some nights. The pub has typical pub selection of beers on tap. No local beers. Service was okay.
Everyone at our table was glad to be there. Certainly worth a return visit. I see why this place has a lot of great reviews.
Not a Scottish bar in any sense of the word. Bartender is Irish, theres not one Scottish beer offered and it truly is misleading if one expects it to be Scottish at all. Still, an average bar, I wouldnt go back under the pretense it is a Scottish bar that I was originally seeking yesterday.
Nice bar with bar games. Seating arrangement is nice and I like the place and environment and decor of the place is nice. Drinks and food is nice and I am happy with my overall experience. Music played at the place is nice. Serving staff is quick and served the food nicely. I will be back and recommend this place.
Dive bar with a great selection of brew from British Isles and a performance space upstairs. Smoking room in front and performance space upstairs are unique.
Dive bars done get much better than this. Good drinks, pool table, smoking section (if thats your thing) and great fried food basket specials. Definitely a good place to get your drink on.
I like..coffe..
Nice pub, but a lack of Scottish beers.
Jazz music in a Scottish pub, are you mad! One Scottish flag suggested its Scottish, nothing else. Nice size, loads of space thats about it.
If youre looking for that neighborhood bar atmosphere, with an upscale flavor, this is the place youre searching for! Very friendly place, frequented by good hard working locals looking to socialize and unwind. The atmosphere is stress free and very easy to melt right into. The staff are knowledgeable, courteous, and great at making sure youre well served and equally pleased by the time you finish your last round and head home. I definitely recommend Edinburgh Castle Pub to anyone who wants to destress while receiving service befitting of royalty!
Decent pub in SF. Quorw large with a pool table snd lots of seating. Normally playing decent music. This place used to be known for being the hangout spot for the academy of art students. Not sure if it still is.Either way, a cool place to pop in for a few drinks.
One of the few remaining great dive bars/pubs in the city. You can even order fish and chips here to go with your Guinness. They also have great 60s DJs sometimes.
Ive been going here since my 21st birthday (8yrs) and its barely changed at all except for the title of the beer+shot special (recession special -> recovery special). Its a large open space with a healthy number of booths and a smoking room. Usually pretty lively.
Be nice iB s AS
Always had a blast here it was like my cheers sucks that they are selling it.
Real old school pub style bar. Cant believe their pool queues were actually in decent shape!
What happened to this place? Used to be packed all the time.... So empty on a Saturday night? Hmmmm
Had a couple points here before a gig at the Great American Music Hall. Decent pub, good selection of beers and ales, and reasonable prices.
One of my favorite bars in SF. Its usually almost empty, but when it gets popping it really pops. They have something they call a recovery special, which is a shot and can of beer for $5. The place also has some UK beer options, a pool table, a ventilated indoor smoking area, and a loft level. The bathroom is wonderfully graffitied.
This place is trashy in the most redeeming way possible! Came here to hang out with some friends & had an extremely good time! Drinks are insanely cheap compared to other spots & the vibe is good with a slight bit of sketch. Will come here again & again.
Although Trivia night is fun and prices are decent. The bartenders are unfriendly.
Please don’t close down!
Cheap drinks, and good people. Always some good conversation with Alan the bar manager.
Love this place. Good barkeep, good fish and chips can be ordered, good beers on tap.
Great comedy, drinks and bartenders
Ive been to trivia night on Tuesday a few times and its always fun. This place has a good atmosphere and the service is always good.
Trivia Tuesday nights at 8:30 is spot on. Tough but fun. Lots of teams but not too crowded. you can also order fish and chips from Piccadilly around the corner on Polk - order it at the bar and they will deliver it to you.
Ive been wanting to go here for so long now! Finally, today was the day haha. After seeing all the incredible reviews and living so close by, this seemed like the obvious next choice on my list of restaurants. We went on Presidents Day so they had special hours and because its a holiday, Im guessing this is why the restaurant wasnt so busy. I could see it being really busy on the evenings and weekends. Parking was a breeze, but thats also because it wasnt too busy! They have their own parking lot. Bless their hearts.Already doing some research, my boyfriend and I already had an idea of what we were going to get even before getting in there. We got The One which is a Kobe burger (priced at $25), a side kale caesar salad, two Love Hazy IPAs, and bread pudding. All of that was perfect for two people, and I feel like it was a smart choice to share the Kobe burger. The patty itself was delicious and juicy. I loved the hints of truffle in there. The biggest game changer was the little side veggies to put on top of the burger. That brought the burger to the next damn level. They were pickled onions and super fresh, sweet pickles. I put a little of that in each bite of the burger. The fries on the side were bomb too, very crispy. My only thing is for $25, idk - I think it should rock my world haha. It was a great burger but not amazing. I personally didnt feel like the price matched the dish.
Nice and dingy and down to earth. The chips are authentically Scottish. The darts are old and broken and there is no triangle with the pool table but that just helps with the atmosphere.
Cozy and entertaining bar staff... she may be battered and showing age, but that’s just the patina of love. Also Venom shoot location!!
Amazing jukebox great variety of drinks and beers. The bartender was really nice. Friends were able to play darts, ladies bathroom was a good size.
Best bar in SF.
Carl absolutely kills it on Tuesday night as the quizmaster. This George Lucas looking dude is a virtuoso with the questions. He also is hilarious and super friendly.
Went there in the early evening and it was dead. At first glance we almost left because it had very high ratings but it seemed a bit unwelcoming and the appearance that it wasnt open for business. Anyway, we tried to order draft beer since there were about ten tappers but the bar tender told us they only serve bottled beer (lost a star here). We ordered bottled beer from a decent selection and fish and chips (really wanted the dragon eggs shown on yelp but none on the menu). The fish was excellent as well as the hand cut fries. All come wrapped, old school style, in paper. No tarter but at least malt vinegar is served. As we ate people came in, looked around and left but we almost did too. Glad we checked it out but our impression was this place may be better to hang out at late night and its really not a Scottish pub so if thats what you are looking for dont go here. If you are ever in Chicago and want to eat and drink at an excellent Scottish pub with Scottish drafts and superb pub style fish, check out the Duke of Perth you wont regret it.Cheers!
Very old bar that was probably from the 40s. The entire bar top is made of irish pound coins. We estimated 4000 of them. The drinks are cheap, generous and you can bring your own food. The floors are a bit sticky, yeah it is that kind of place...
Walked in and sat at the bar. The bartender was so bz playing dominos he didnt even look at me. After 10 minutes I left. Texted friends to meet elsewhere. Garbage service.
Ive been coming here since 1974 I was one years old
Went here along with a few friends and thought the atmosphere left much to be desired. but for a hole in the wall, you could do much worse. drinks were cheap. food was decent, even if the portions were tiny. this place is a kind of we could do much worse, so lets stop in and have a bite and a drinktype of joint.
Low key awesome. Pool, affordable drinks, atmosphere.
Was my fav hangout when i lived in SF, good fish and chips
Came here for the trivia. Was apprehensive about the timing, since it starts at 830pm but the host blew through it, which was great. The beer selection is good, and they let you order in from other places - a popular choice is the fish and chips place two blocks over.
Quiet night on Wednesday. .still had fun.
The staff at this bar will make you feel like lifelong friends! My boyfriend and I are moving to London and wanted to have a good-bye party. Not only did they let us have 30 of our friends with no charge, they made a We miss you already sign for our area, gave us free t-shirts, and a round of pickle-backs for all of our guests!Cannot say enough great things about the customer service...and of course the potato skins
Great Scottish Bar
Really good, authentic UK style pub. Really friendly and knowledgeable barman and good beers too.
This place has a great atmosphere, great food, and great beer!
Definitely a good place to go if youre a beer lover. Plenty on tap and in bottles. Atmosphere is cool too, especially for the crappy area its in.If youre looking for a chill place to enjoy some drinks with friends, this place is a good choice. Not pretentious at all, so jeans and t-shirt to fit right in.
One of the coolest and oldest bars in San Francisco. Always something hip going on and its always a really fun environment.
Awesome bar and great scotch selection! Trivia night is honestly not that great though. Well be back when its not trivia night! :-D
Great dive bar. Good service with good selection.
I love it here.
Great beer selection! But this place gets real crowded. If you love beer like i do and trying out different beers is your thing, then this spot is for you hands down. All beers are $6 bucks as well.
Been going there to meet up with friends for about 30 years. Great place. Beers shots and fish n chips
Aside from being one of the best places to play, they got a rad wait staff, and delicious food!
There are just 5 stars, but the place is great even better than nob hill bars
Great wood-paneled dive bar with a ton of space, fantastic crowd, and legit bands. Worthwhile to check out and grab a pint.
This is the bar. The bar you know. The bar we all know. Its the place dreams come true and people become men. Go there and be in the bar that is most certainly a bar. Godspeed! Also, Wednesdays are fun when theres 60s soul music blaring.
One of my favorite bars in SF. I went to one of their 90s R&B/hip-hop nights and had such a great time. They have frequent themed music nights with space for dancing, plus they have a famously difficult trivia night every week.
It was once great. Its still just fine. Its destiny will include more greatness. They have an ATM. Barkeeps are randy, treat them with respect, but you can dream.
What a shithole. In the best way!! I love a good dive bar with cheap beers and dark lighting. This is it and ya gotta love the cheesy castle decor. ha.
Drinks are cheap, good place to drink Scotch, dingy, run down, not ashamed
Yes!!!!!!!!! Great selection of Scotch, Irish Whisky and American/Japanese Whiskey.
Order the fish & chips here and they bring it to you from the place around the corner. Good spot to hang out. Has a few decent beers too.
Amazing
Old Irish pub... Felt like medieval times... Great Tap selection, beatles, rolling stones, and black sabbath Playlist. Really cool!
Fun vibes and more! Great music and
One off the best trivia nights in the city on Tuesdays.
Fun kinda old timey bar with a smoking room and an emphasis on dancing. The smoking room has a piano in it.
The 1st bartender was great, drink was good. Shift change brought out a horrible bartender who made very bad drinks
Cool dive not crowded
Fun place, seems to draw a younger (I cant believe I can say that now) crowd.
At Edinburgh Castle, I tried a pint of Death and Taxes Black Beer, which is a marvelous California dark lager.
This is the best place I’ve ever been
It is a dark, older, divey bar in a colorful neighborhood: however, they celebrate Robbie Burns Day each year, replete with (bag)piper, haggis, bardic readings; they still serve the old fish and chips; they have a good beer and whiskey selection; they have a music calendar with something for everyone; pool; darts; a good juke box selection; and, Litquake was conceived here over beer! How can one not love this place?
Trivia Tuesday night!
Tuesday night trivia is the best in the city. Love the cheezy decor.
Open
Good drinks, great management, close to great knife shop.
Nice place for a beer and to play pool and darts.
Great bar. Not what youd expect from the outside!
Great pub with lots of character. Friendly staff too.
Go here for Soul Night, Go here for a dance night, but dont go here expecting for a Scottish Beer Tasting Fest. They have Moylens on tap, and apparently used to have Belhaven. ( People should petition and get that back, even better they should get the Twisted IPA ). The crowd here is a blackhole, in the TL, Tendernob, but gets all sorts. Talk to the Bar Tender owner Scottish Football, or about Scotland, hell be pleased.I also recommend going to Trivia Night!! Well what are you waiting for, get ovthere naw!
Great on a soul night, too loud and packed on a hip hop night
Excellent drinks, music and dark ambiance.
Good pub to chill with some friends.
Nice bar. Good music.
Great dive to sit and drink with a friend.
Great dive bar
