Wonderful museum with welcoming staff. The architecture is beautiful, as is the art inside! Their permanent collection consists of many nice pieces, and their location often gets famous works in for temporary shows. Don’t miss out!
In my philosophy of art class, I wrote a paper about this post modern architecture building. Much more I learned about it from my research than was in the brochures or from the docent who talked about the architectural, modern movement Curious little museum, and the history of the architect. Its beautifully set in the San Francisco Golden Gate Park. See it for yourself, and maybe youll take away a better appreciation of the post modern, architectural movement.
Always a good time and relaxing environment...covid protocols in place. Parking lot underneath can be chaotic
A beautiful museum. They do a remarkable job with special exhibits. Its a very calming environment and the view from upstairs is staggering. If you bank with B.O.A, make sure you use your museums on us pass the first full weekend of each month. You can also use Discover&Go passes if they partner with your local library.
Not too crowded, masks and social distancing practiced and in place. Nice to be able to get up closely to each piece of art and see as much as you want
Beautiful morning at the De Young! Even with the Covid restrictions everyone was super friendly and helpful.
Architecture design is absolutely stunning. The space is so well design to host different exhibitions. The use of materials, the angles of the building form and nature lights permeate different corners of the space. The light is dancing around the building. As you walk through the exhibition, you also experience a architecture wonder. I enjoy the variety of contemporary exhibitions and truly feel touched and inspired by this museum.
Meh. The tower was closed. Theyre stuffing way too many pieces onto the walls too close together. Space the works out. Its not a kindergarten classroom. Continues to disappoint. This is not a world class museum. Very provincial. Ive seen better in Norfolk and Indianapolis to be honest.
This museum has an expensive admission fee, but a delightful day is guaranteed to the art lover. Their glass sculpture showcase was especially enjoyable, as I’ve admired Dale Chihuly’s work for a long time. An untitled cast glass figure wreathed in yellow, by Nicolas Africano, was the most intriguing piece. Don’t forget to go up the tower for a breathtaking 360 degree view of San Francisco landscape. It isn’t possible to savour all the collections this place offers in a day, so plan in advance.
Just to clarify, some of the reviews and photos seem to thing this is the Academy of Sciences: this is an art museum. The art here is really gorgeous, and much of it features historical events. Sometimes they have special art showcases where art from a different culture or time period will be displayed, along with some awesome information about the culture. My personal favorite was ancient african art, its so beautiful. Whever I come here to visit family, we always come to here (which is SUPER often, by the way).
Iconic art museum in Golden Gate Park. Great art shows! If you have time, try to have tea down the road at the Japanese tea garden. The science museum across the way is also worth visiting.
Beautiful museum, just a wonderful place to enjoy art with COVID restrictions in place. More than enough room for you to see exactly what you want to see and not have to deal with crowds of people. Highly recommended.
This is one of the best secrets in San Francisco. A home for fantastic art. A must visit. Explore the rest of Golden gate Park from here.
I really enjoy The Exhibit Frida Karla to the African exhibit
Went for the Frida exhibit. Lovely! The permanent gallery was also so diverse and large. I will definitely go again
What a beautiful museum.I walked inside the museum and they had a master of sewing factory, Julian Prince Dash, helping kids to stitch the bags with their own or parents art it was the cutest thing I ever seen in my entire life in museums.I walked inside and I saw museum art guides handing over kids and their parents the post cards for them to re-create art in museum.Impressionism, modernism, African and indigenous art. Beautiful museum with lovely helping people ️
The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, commonly referred to as the de Young, is a fine arts museum located in San Franciscos Golden Gate Park. The de Young is named for early San Francisco newspaperman M. H. de Young. The season Young museum is located parallel to the California Academy of Sciences and the Golden Gate Amphitheater. Yesterday, I visited the de Young museum because of an amazing exhibit they’re showcasing, “Soul of a Nation.” Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983 is an internationally acclaimed exhibition, organized by Tate Modern, which celebrates art made by Black artists during two pivotal decades when issues of race and identity dominated and defined both public and private discourse. The de Young’s presentation includes a focus on Bay Area artists whose work promoted personal and cultural pride, collective solidarity and empowerment, and political and social activism. If you’ve never been to the de Young museum, it’s open daily from about 9am - 5pm and has free days for Bay Area residents.
Very modern, but its also very intense. Many paintings all on the same wall. This could be a very intense reaction.
A real crown jewel of Golden Gate Park. The permanent collections are amazing and various exhibitions are unique. Definitely a must see stop on any visit to San Francisco.
Workers are so nice and helpful at the museum. There is always such great range between rotating exhibits and their regular ones.
Beautiful collections in a truly gem of a park. The building can be a little confusing to navigate, and several parts are closed during COVID restrictions. But permanent galleries hold truly amazing Oceanic/African art, and temporary exhibitions are consistently top notch.
A wonderful cultural resource for the whole area. And theyre doing an awesome job of keeping it accessible during this awful time.
Came here for the first time for its bouquet art show. It was amazing! The pairing of bouquet with its exhibition is fascinating. Honestly, I never even seen some of the flowers used in the bouquet. We came on the last day of this 7 days show, some of the flowers are quite limpy by then. I recommend you come early in the week. Garage parking is expensive, about $12 for 2 hours. Street parking is very hard to find unless you come early. Plan to spend a good 3 hours in the museum.
Enjoyed another remarkable opening night at the de Young Museum. They have had a few great shows this year including solo shows on Monet and Gauguin and some stellar group shows including this recent opener: Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963-1983. Truly eye opening. We decided to become members this year and have taken our friends to see shows. It has been truly worthwhile. Thanks
Must go for art lovers!! The museum is nestled inside of Golden Gate Park and often has special exhibits, in addition to longer term and permanent exhibits. I went in February for the Soul if a Nation exhibit and it was beautiful, raw, inspiring, and thought provoking. The artists featured were also a part of black art movements in the US from 1964-1983. It was fabulous! You cant go wrong visiting an art museum like de Young.
An absolutely divine museum that pays a wonderful homage to the history of America as well as the collections of prominent (rich) American people. A modern layout does not detract from the incredible pieces on display. I really loved the staff and volunteers here - super friendly and always asking if there is any other way to help.
Frida exhibit was wonderful. The special Bay Area artist exhibit was captivating & inspiring. Visit now
The best museum in SF in my opinion. The collection is amazing and the statue garden is beautiful. The park is really fun to visit.Theres a great view from the top.The museum offers a decent selection of places to eat or drink. Theres a coat check service thats free.
Interesting museum, lots of diverse material. Sometimes feels a bit random. Good C19 processes.
A beautiful museum, great architecture, collections and description of the art work. Would like to come back next time. Takes at least two hours to visit
Frida Kahlo exhibit was amazing they did a pretty good job with distance 4 people it was a perfect day 70° Blue Sky
The whole museum is set to welcome people from the very beginning. I enjoy my time there.
Super fun!! definitely has IG worth pics, the only part I might have to say was the upside down room; which you dont have to pay if you dont want to... and just dont go to that section, I had a headache there, it was super confusing!! If you wanna go in to that, Ill say look it up on the ig and kinda get the poses some users do, if not youll totally be lost and not know what to do!
So wonderful to be in the city on such a beautiful day. The Friday Kahlo exhibit was amazing. What an inspirational woman, definitely avante gard. The pain she endured was evident in many of her paintings. I will return to one of my favorite museums soon.
Currently showing the de Young Open - a showcase of contemporary Bay Area artists. Well worth a visit.
Such a gem in a special building in a great location...well truly not to be missed.
Wanted to ride the Ferris wheel. Now you cant get close. My Friend is handicap how can we get in
Have gone before love there exhibits but the Frida Kahlo has been my favorite. I hadn t purchased tickets and they were so helpful on how i could buy one and i was able to.
Limited access, timed tickets for all access, not just special exhibit due to coronavirus. Cafe open during this period with table service to outdoor seating only. Frida Kahlo show gives outstanding background and insights into her life and work.
Feels like the younger brother/sister of the Tate Modern in London. Expect a similar vibe here, modern architectural building with a mix of contemporary art exhibitions.
Explore the collection in this wonderful structure! Be sure to go to the top of the tower for a great view of the city. We went to see the Monet and Gauguin shows - both were wonderful. A walk in the sculpture garden was a welcome breath of fresh air after taking in so much inside the building. For those who love art - you might want to consider the membership. If you go more than once with a companion, it pays for itself pretty quickly.Just a note, parking in the basement (entrance at 10th and Fulton) is pricey, but worth it on a rainy day. The cafe has a nice selection of hot and cold foods, but not for the budget minded.
A great SF cultural resource. I went to see Soul of a Nation, a special exhibit originally from the Tate in London, covering Black artists during the first Black Power movement. Featured were some local Bay Area artists, especially relevant given the Oakland roots of the Black Panthers. The exhibit was varied with abstract, sculpture, and realistic segments. I especially enjoyed the David Hammons pieces.
Frida Kahlo exhibit was wonderful but pretty G” rated.
Great exhibition of local artists right now, about to go in to the Frida Kahlo exhibit
Love, love the Frida kahlo exhibition! Probably the best one I seen so far.
Attended a special exhibit called Monet:The Late Years. Amazing pieces from around the world. Beautiful contemporary building! Multiple Exhibits in different Galleries throughout the Museum. Varying styles and media for each exhibit. Tons of space even though hopping, loved that the security didnt pester you when taking pictures or video and you could get REALLY close to the different works, as long as you behave accordingly. Was really impressed by the location in SF, across the loop from Cal Academy, parking free if willing to walk about half a mile and the parking Garage has plenty of spaces (was $21 for 4 hours). Has an entrance right to the parking garage! So handy when raining.
Great museum with amazing art. For 15 bucks you get great value for your money. A must see in San Francisco.
Made a special visit to see the ‘Bouquets to Art’ exhibit. It had been a few years since we last saw this same exhibit. It was super packed, people bumping into each other and forgetting others are trying to appreciate the art… was not as enjoyable as last time. The exhibit was still amazing and beautiful, however! Bonus was the Gauguin exhibit - LOVED IT and able to really enjoy it, not near as busy as the Bouquet to Art. And for some reason, people were more respectable in the Gauguin exhibit.Beautiful museum in general, totally recommend.
Goldsworthy, Picasso, Ruth Asawa and Chihuly are just four of the many illustrious artists whose works are displayed at the de Young. The de Young is one of Americas great museums, and we San Franciscans are fortunate to have it housed in our city. It is a vast museum, and I always make sure to have had a good meal and some caffeine in my system before visiting so as to have the stamina to take it all in.
If you got a friend that doesnt know what kind of art speaks to them, take them to the De Young. It has a mish mash of different styles with regularly rotating traveling exhibits. From classic portraits to early American pottery to binary art, you can find everything as long as you visit a few times a year.EAT BEFORE VISITING!!! Almost every museum area is an island of expensive eats. Ill source my own meat if im gonna pay 14 dollars for a hotdog.
Great museum to spend day at. Free admission on Saturdays for residents. Go online and see if you qualify. Displays are fantastic and well done.
Great to see it back in business again. The Kahlo show was very enjoyable.
Its a very silent place and filled with calmness. Very spacious and clean. Just loved the ambience there. They have gift shop too. From one side of the museum there is observation deck on 9th floor which is free entry. U can have amazing view from the observation deck.
This Museum has great special exhibits. It has amazing collections ranging from American artists like Andy Warhol to Georgia Okeiffe and amazing European painters such as Monet and Matisse. It’s worth checking out the special exhibits they are short with poignant pieces. Bathrooms are clean and Parking is close. Try to go on a weekday as the park is rather busy on the weekends. Oh yeah and the museum cafe has indulgent treats as well as healthy snacks. Get out see some art up close and personal! Check it out Claude Monet’s signature
I really enjoyed my familys visit to the museum. There is still hope in SF!
Fantastic Frida Kahlo exhibit. So nice to finally be able to visit a museum during Covid-19.
Came here during their Bouquet to Art event, which host in Jun 2019 ( prior years usually host in April, and the event last for one week). We went on the last day of the week, the flowers are note as fresh, some of them are dead, but most of them and overall still very pretty. It spread out on the first and second floors in multiple rooms. The ticket is about $28 dollar for adult, and $19 for student. They sell flowers outside of the museum for only $5 a large bouquet.
Culture and art speaks to my soul. We had the privilege of viewing Monets later years and my soul wept at the beauty I beheld. DeYoung does an amazing job curating art and allowing the public to enjoy. Annual pass is the only way to go for locals. I usually drag hubs or willing child who is home that weekend. Decent cafeteria food and solid art. I cant wait to see the next exhibit.
Today was my first visit to the deYoung Museum. It was better than expected!! It offers several displays which give a visual perspective on the artists interpretation and mindset. The Soul if Nation display was amazing!! Although the fact that it depicts an era when riots were happening because of injustices the art that stems from that is worth seeing.Because it is in the center of Golden Gate Park the viewing tower offers some incredible views of San Francisco. I will be back.
The Soul of a Nation exhibit was wonderful, and gave me a lot of insightful into Black-American history. I would highly recommend getting the audio tour, as it adds additional value to the exhibits. The museum is well-served by transit, and is open reasonable hours. If you visit, do not miss the viewing tower, especially on a clear day. It offers amazing views, and is complimentary to admission.
Was great have not been there for so long..great exhibits...was not criwded at 10:30..was a Saturday had free passes..parking was 1 block outside park..on Balboa st. Best get there early..was sunny and nice in sf today..Frida showing was sold out
Never been before but will come back. Very well done exhibit on Monet. Easy to see all the pictures in about an hour. Get the audio guide as it provided context for the paintings. Also saw the exhibit on Gauguin the same day. That gallery was a little more crowded but able to spend time with the art.

Now open... Need reservation... So much to see in the plaza and music concourse. These photos of yellow water lilies are in the fountain on north side of deYoung MuseumFerris wheel in background - - inactive - - casualty of covid...
A fabulous tour through changing artistic periods of art in North America over multiple centuries.
So glad I finally had the opportunity to see The Frida gallery
The De Young is back and it is awesome! Uncanny Valley is mind blowing!
The de Young Museum has a wide variety of different types of artworks. From reliefs to oil on canvas to sculptures. I was on a visit for something related to my class. Some works that caught my attention were the videos. They are quite creative, some using geometry or abstractness. Definitely worth a visit if you like art.
We visited de Young the first time last Saturday to see Monet - the late years. The line to buy tickets were long but fast processed. Show tickets can also be reserved online. It is by time so they can control the number of people in the showroom, which is good. The front desk lady was very helpful. She kindly suggested us to go for the 9th floor observation tower to see the whole view of the city since it was our first time there, which was incredible. The show was nicely planned. It showed Monet focusing on his waterlilies in his later years, the pond, the rose garden, the Japanese bridge, the house on the hill, same perspectives, different occasions. Great experience! With the ticket to Monet, you can also go to see Gauguin and the general exhibition. We also visited the cafe inside, it was really relaxing. When we were lining up for ordering, there was this nice lady handing out the menu for us. Chocolate madeleine was so yummy. We will definitely visit again.
De Young Open show is a fantastic exhibition of 900 + local artists.
The GA admission and what you get for it aint bad. The feature exhibit when I went (Monet) was really cool but unsurprisingly pretty expensive. Parking is always a nightmare too. Not a huge fan of stills of people or African art and theres a lot but there is a nice variety.
The building is a piece of art in itself, and the exhibits are always amazing.
Good place in the golden gate park. Not pricey but collections are not my cup of tea. The only nice exhibit was the ‘propaganda and war in the second floor’. Parking is always a challenge in the park and depending on the day and tine you may spend about half hour or more find where to park. Cafeteria is nice looking with good options and outside sitting. Not the usual overpriced food of many museums.
Beautiful area to visit the museum itself can be seen in 2 hours and the last time I visited was during the bouquet to art annual exhibit, which is a highlight if you are in town. Theres parking available nearby if you arrive before noon it should be available. Theres a cafe and free water inside; snacks to go. A great place to go with a friend I wouldnt recommend for families for small kids.
Great museum and we were lucky to be here the same time as Monet. Oh, what a special exhibit this is....so many of his works all in one spot, wonderfully displayed and explained. Also a smaller exhibit of Gauguin....while not as many of his more famous works, you learn much about his life.Be sure to go up to the top floor for a panoramic view of the city.
Fantastic art museum in Golden Gate Park with a tower observation deck boasting magnificent views of the city. Kids get in free. Cool New Guinean art exhibit there currently.
You can literally spend hours here without realizing it, we spent almost 3 hours checking out both floors. Great way to spend some time getting more familiar with fine art. Worth the visit especially with the free admission you get to another museum
I loved the art, especially the AI exhibition!
Fairly small museum, easy to navigate. You can spend half a day here.
Long time Bay Area resident and finally took the chance to visit. I didnt pay for the social exhibit because they was so much to see in the main halls.I loved the way that the art was themed: not chronological, but but location / anthropology / collector. I found it more of an exhibit then a museum - which was a good thing!
All I can say is...my my my!!! Your jaws will drop just from the sheer size of this architecture design and all the amazing exhibits from around the world to see! It will take at least 2 hours to skim through the basic showcase displays. Once in a life time artifacts they have on display! Must see for all ages!!!!
The building is beautiful to see when your walking up to it. Going inside, dont bring a backpack because you are not allowed to keep it on your shoulders. All bags must be below your hips. On top of the observatory, the views are nice. Great place to take a panoramic. I did not go into the museum because I had my backpack and didnt want to hold it like a shopping bag. The little restaurant inside is quaint. The prices were very high for my liking and the coffee was not a good as I thought it would be.Overall, I could have skipped this place on my tour through San-Fran
New exhibition on Frida Kahlo happening at the museum.
If you want to visit some parts, you gotta pay some fees, but there is a free visit to the top floor where you can see San Francisco beneath your feet. Amazing view, definitely a must see.
Really nice museum with a wide range of artwork. I dropped my sweater and someone returned it within minutes and I got it back so fast! Loved the Stuart Davis collection, wasnt crazy about the summer love exhibit. The general collection is really nice though! Theres a really nice view of the entire park from the tower definitely worth checking out!
I went on a free day, and some woman who was working there harassed me and my friends multiple times about making sure we had a pass. You would think 1 time would have been enough! I hope she gets paid well enough to be such a pain!
Very nice friendly staff and interesting and diverse exhibits. I really enjoyed the Ed Hardy exhibit very creative and unlike any other art museum exhibit Ive seen. Its a must see for tattoo lovers.
Nice design and collections of native American art and Latino.
Need 3 hours at least to view the displays. General admission is $14 and with special exhibits its $28. General ticket covers 2 levels of exhibits and 9th floor observation deck. Cafe has brunch n lunch available. General exhibits cover modern art from 1800 majorly from Americas.
Cool anthropology collection with great Mesoamerican artifacts (including murals from Teotihuacan!) and modern Native American pieces.
One of the few good museum in bay area. Worth the time spent. Very nice tour programs.
Longstanding cultural institution in San Francisco. I try to frequent the museum at least once a year for current art exhibitions. Ive also participated in fashion shows and other events such as Fridays Nights at the Deyoung which makes for a perfect date night or fun adult friends outing. I recommend taking 2-3 hours to thoroughly immerse in all of the amazing exhibitions and permanent collections. On a hot day(rare in SF) you can make an afternoon of the museum followed by a stroll and picnic in the surrounding park. The current Soul of a Nation exhibit is one of the DeYoungs best collections to date.Check out the DeYoung website for free admission days, held several times throughout the year.
Caveat: Only climbed towerTower had nice view of surrounding area, don’t expect to see Golden Gate Bridge though. Could only go to viewing deck by lift when I went, no stairs.
We came here to see the Ed Hardy collection and it was an amazing experience. The museum is definitely worth a visit and there’s a lot more to see. We loved this trip.
The de Young museum never disappoints! Among all their regular exhibits they also have temporary shows like the Monet retrospective. It was beautifully put together and showcased some truly interesting pieces from Monets later years.
Great museum lay out, helpful staff, and good exhibits all year around.
Cool art. The tower isnt worth it but if you like art maybe the admission fee is
We love this place and we love coming here. Dont forget to climb the tower as it is completely free and offers one of the most unique views of San Francisco. If you have kids, you can climb the tower first and then head to the exhibits. We always enjoy the featured exhibit and have been several times. If you are a San Francisco, I really suggest getting a membership. If you are from out of town definitely put the DeYoung on the top of your list.
