Was really looking forward to this. Total waste of time and money. I was bored to tears with the demonstration. NOT a museum at all. I wouldnt give this a 1 star but theres no option for zero stars. To each their own....Ive traveled the world and give honest reviews and this is as honest as it gets. We went to the witch dungeon the day before and was pretty much the same information. The difference.....there was a live performance of the trials (somewhat corny) but they EARNED the money I paid. You didnt just listen to a prerecorded message. Then you were able to walk through an actual dungeon....this was really worth the money and a buck a piece cheaper. It was also in another old church. The picture posted is from the Witch Dungeon museum.
This was amazing! No photos or videos allowed inside, don’t ruin it for everyone else! Very educational. Not what I expected at all, better!IMPORTANT TIPS***you HAVE to buy your ticket and choose a time online at least 1 day BEFORE you go!!! And don’t be late!!! They will not let you in if you miss your window!Awesome well priced gift shop afterward. Did a fantastic job social distancing.
The Salem Witch Museum (really a tour) was very informative and an interesting insight into the Salem witch trials. There are two main rooms where you sit an stand and listen to a narration of the general history of the Salem witch trials. The first room provides a good visual an time frame of the history of the trials while the second room is a general reflection. Great option if youre in Salem.
The staff was pretty nice, though they seemed stressed and a little impatient regarding COVID regulations and allowing when you can go to the bathroom. My main issue is that I paid $28 for me and my guy to go to a two-room exhibit that had wax figures and a few storyboards. I was definitely expecting something better. Kind of a waste of money. This place is best for just taking pictures outside and moving on.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect even with reading the reviews. All this museum is is 2 prerecorded informational segments. The first one you sit down for the second one you are standing in a room visiting different exhibits. If you’re bored and want to waste sometime and escape the cold this is a good option- but it’s definitely not a must do or see. I knew all the information already given from just googling prior to my trip to Salem.I was hoping there would be an actual exhibit with artifacts to view but I was very disappointed when we exited through the gift shop and there was nothing else.
Nothing unique about this place. Watch the Crucible, and youll have more to enjoy than this museum. There are no artifacts, no new facts, nor a compelling atmosphere. This is the whole trip:-You walk into a dark room where you hear a quick summary of the events of the Salem witch trials. The story is presented with an array of dolls. These were pretty but not very spectacular.-After the summary, you walk into an absurd gift shop. They try to sell you expensive witchcraft memorabilia that apparently includes Harry Potter apparel.-After that, you are presented with a room of more dolls, some herbs on display, and a quick summary of how the Witch has changed throughout time.During the whole experience, you never once see any items directly from the Salem trials; just stories lacking in detail. You wont really learn anything new that you havent heard before.Better to stay home and watch the Crucible.
The museum itself is filled with interesting information. The first part of the tour is an automated recording telling the events of the Salem witch trials. You swirl around on your seat to as you follow the life size diorama. The second part of the tour is also an automated recording that you follow with corresponding pictures on the wall as you stand. The second part of the tour we were ushered out politely before we had a chance to read the timeline on the wall. We were informed the gift shop had a copy available. It is $10.95, very simple without any photographs. You are not permitted to take any photographs or video recordings. The tickets were $14.00 per adult, seniors $12.50 and $11.00 for kids 3 years to 14 years old. Extremely limited street parking available.
This was a fun and informative experience. Overall it takes about an hour and is broken into two sections where a pre-recorded lecture along with staged scenes give you the history of the witch trials and aftermath. It was done in an entertaining and interesting way, but is a little different from a typical museum as there arent any historical artifacts to view. Overall I think as long as you know what to expect its worth the price.
Dont show up to it unless you are in Salem. You have to buy tickets online only through the website. Makes no sense. So em to who wants to buy them first! Needless to say, were told they had them on the phone. Drove up from Boston and within 45 minutes, they were sold out. Guy on the phone says, oh sorry, it is what it is. Pass
Well run museum/ tour house. Gift shop is definitely interesting. Guides are both informative and funny.
They require masks to enter, other comments say they dont and no one was wearing anyone, totally false. All entering must have masks at all times and they follow the state guidelines.Interesting display but felt the price was a bit high for just narrative over lighting up some displays.Had some good educational value which was appreciated.Good size giftshop.
PROS: This place was very cool in the sense that the building looks like a castle and inside theres a big room with displays along the wall that simulate a timeline of events that pan out the history of the witch trials. They then lead you into a room with displays of more events which eventually leads you to how the mindsets of people back then that conducted the witch trials are still current today with other disastersCONS: You have to buy your tickets for the same day as when youre going. That isnt good because its first come first serve and when I was planning this last month i couldnt reserve my spot. There was hardly any street parking either so Im glad I stayed in a local hotelOVERALL: Definitely THE museum to see when youre down there. Just make sure once you get their to buy your tickets online as soon as possible from their website
Its not your typical museum. Its actually two presentations that you sit through. You have to turn around in your seats to look at wax like sculptures and listen to a story being told by a speaker. The information they give is cool but you honestly learn more from a quick google search. Gift shop is nice.
Meh. Expected to see some artifacts as you typically do at a museum. Instead it was simply a pre recorded narration explaining what happened with the witch trials as different scenes were illuminated. They then attempted to take on the noble cause of educating visitors on how to recognize and prevent all types of witch hunts which I admire but as half of the experience of the pre recorded narration I thought it was too much. They should change the name from Salem Witch museum to Salem Witch audio visual presentation. Or otherwise add some artifacts or specimens to go with what they have. Would not go again and would pay more money for something better. I would give two stars for impressive looking building, friendly staff and low $13 ticket price but Im only giving one because it is not a museum.
I appreciated their attentiveness to COVID protocols. I felt they did a good job altering the tour to make it feel safe and minimize risk. Tickets are all online and get snatched up quickly; maybe make plans to stay up until 12:01am to log onto the site to get first pick- especially in October!
I really wanted to love this museum, truly. I was hoping for more in depth exhibits and information on the history of Witches to actually dig deep into. The museum is split into two presentations: the first is a theatrical (wax figures) overview of the trials from start to finish, the second is a 10 minute retrospective on the history of Witches through time, featuring three wax figure vignettes. The staff were (for the most part) really friendly and trying to be as accommodating as they could during COVID. Theyve taken great care to set up social distancing where possible and are ON IT in mask enforcement (which I appreciate). A fun fact I learned: the statue in front of the museum that most assume its a witch is ACTUALLY the founder of Salem. The more you know
The architecture and set up of this place is really neat! However, their telling of the history of the Trials is noticeably lacking (they failed to even mention Bridget Bishop who was the first person killed during the Trials). They spent the second half of the presentation on a lecture about how there Is No Such Thing as a Witch and there never has been, which is an extremely odd thing for a “Witch Museum“ to state. And finally their last exhibit is a wall upon which they compare the Salem Witch Trials to the Red Scare during the McCarthy era and the oppression of the Japanese during World War 2. This place has so much potential if only they would leave propaganda out of it! Sadly your money would be better spent elsewhere.
Not a museum. You sit in a little room and watch dolls getting lit while narrations playing in the background. Was it about witches? Yes. Is it a museum? No. Would I pay $16? No.
Getting to know Salem, its museums, its shops, its history is fantastic. A world enveloped in mysteries and magic, of enchantments and beauty. The best time to visit this historical and cultural heritage is in October, when Halloween is celebrated, a party that has great prominence, with the participation of the entire population, where the city receives neighbors from around the world. Super recommend
I hated. Its not a museum. I wasted 14 dollars, it was not worthy. Its just a storytelling with speakers and some dolls on the walls.
Something fun to do while in Salem. Takes about an hour. Isn’t overly thrilling but does a good job of telling the story of the trials.
Outside looks awesome. . . If you dont pre order tickets then they will sell out on you. Better make sure you make preparations ahead of time because you will not just be waltzing straight up and getting in. Great place though.
This came highly recommended... it was information if you didnt know the history of the witch trials. I would recommend it to someone that doesnt know the history. If you know the history, its just watching figures and having a story read to you.
First off the staff was Wicked Amazing and very nice,, welcoming efficient etc,, I Visit Salem often last time I was in the museum was 20 years ago The tour literally lasted about 35 minutes was supposed to be an hour but how can you make an hour out of being able to stand in two rooms and then having to leave and being given no time to read what little they had on the walls I mean seriously why are you open? but you could spend all the time you like in the gift shop where they were charging $30 for low quality t-shirts,,,hahahahaha right.....Oh,, and their restroom was filthy
So so worth it. I love the way they are doing it now you really feel like youre safe going through (covid) and you learn so much in an hour. Very happy we decided to do this
Super informative. Wish you could see from all angles in the first room but otherwise its a must for Salem. The end of the second part is eye opening.
So cool!!! Its a very historic and interesting presentation. You need to book your tickets the night before at midnight. The gift shop is really awesome as well with lots of unique items.
Very well down audio narration and set pieces. I took my kids, 7 and 4, and they enjoyed it a lot. We had a great time!
Not worth it at all, save your money.I wanted to enjoy this museum but it fell flat. As other people have noted, the level of drama to historical information is overdone. This is not really a museum. I was hoping for some good historical information and I thought (despite some of the negative reviews) that there might still be something of value. I was wrong, there is very little to see here. If the admission was $5 or so, I would pass it off as a kitsch experience. But $14 per person is way too steep for the actual value provided.
Its pretty meh. The staff are really great though. Theres a local artist that makes authentic arrest warrants for the gift shop that are really cool probably the highlight of my visit there.
Was cool until Native Americans are being persecuted and left out of the conversation. The second part of the exhibit should be a smaller crowd so you can actually read the passages on the walls. The first part was cool. I wish they chose a Christian from the audience and sacrificed them or something fun.
It is not worth the entrance fee. You sit to watch a narrative story while looking at bunch of status. Cant even take a picture
It was actually more enjoyable during covid times than during regular. its a bit pricey but the show is very fun and good for kids. staff was great
I will be honest, the entire town let me down. I went looking for interesting history and instead i got Harry Potter. The museun is okay, needs adults for organization and seriousness. Too dark and too short.
Not a whole lot to see in the museum. The story of the Salem witch trials is told and that is great, but if you’re looking to see exhibits, there aren’t many. The gift shop is great though.
From the outside of the building you expect ‘more’ inside, but if you are looking to understand a bit more about the Salem Witch Trials, this museum is your best opportunity to learn some of the stories and understand more about the era.
Extremely over priced for what you get. Its only two rooms. The first room is kind of cool, you sit around and stare at stations of poorly made wax figures while listening to an audio track. The story is detailed and informative especially for those who skipped history class. I feel since technology improved and the amount of revenue made each year here, this exhibit could be much more engaging. The second room...well honestly... its really nothing exceptional. I feel they had extra stuff and didnt know how to display it in the first room. It basically shows you a time line of how the image of witches evolved.
Great museum with very lively demonstration. Worth visiting!
We ordered our reservations on line, checked in and waited in line. NO SOCIAL DISTANCING going in in line. We got our money back and left NOT GOING IN. Im 65 yr old disabled veteran. My mother in law is 70. We cannot risk getting Covid.
Cost: $59.003 Adults 2 Children under 12We had to visit here when my mother-in-law was in town for the holidays we visited for the day. I wouldn’t really call it a museum, it’s more an experience. the experience gave a great look into the history of the salem witch trials and also had a great exhibit that showcased the development of witches from a pagan religion to how pop-culture depicts them today. We really enjoyed this presentation. It’s split into 2 parts, one which is a theatre type room where you sit and listen to the story of the witch trials and look at models of the people involved. It was very informative and fun at the same time. The second part is a short presentation by staff member about witches in society and the media. The lady doing the presentation was engaging.I expected more of a traditional, walk around and look at things, museum but it was still an entertaining and fun way to spend an hour.
The first part was informative and interesting, the second part was a little boring. The entire production needs to updated - their wax figures are pretty well done but fall flat when it should be an enthralling storyline. And in the second section you should get time to look at the timeline, otherwise why even have it on the wall. Lastly, we were there for the 6:30 show ( last one of the day). It was over at 7:06, but they closed the gift store at 7:00; why? Why would you not stay open another 30 minutes or alter the starting times of the show so the gift shop would be open after the last show ended? Doesnt make sense.
I could have spent a whole lot more time observing this on item had I not been with others. What a work of imagination! The time spent viewing would truly be well spent for any fan of any level. I am just an average fan and I have to say I was blown away!
This is an experience presented in two separate dioramas that explains the events of the Salem Witch Trials. In this regard, it is informative. However, a museum it is not. There are no artifacts or exhibits. Since this is all a timed presentation, there is no time available to read the wall placards which have nuggets of history.
If there was a witch hunt for bad businesses this place would be burned at the stake. 100% a tourist trap, not worth the money. Left completely disappointed.1 star because theres not a zero star option.
Educational with nice visuals. I think the word museum is a little misleading. You walk into a large atrium. You sit and listen to the history behind the witch hunt while looking at various mannequins (at a loss right now for a better word, maybe a life like diorama?) depicting real people. I learned a lot!
Enjoyed it. It was very informative. The wax scenes were pretty neat!
No pictures allowed which is a good policy. So non to share except for outside ones. But the overall experience was amazing!
Kitschy, but charming. Loaded with history and information - worth the visit. Masks and social distancing are both required and enforced.
Good narrative presentation of the Salem Witch Trials. A little short but worth the money. Well stocked gift shop, something for everyone.
Every year,my wife and I go to the witch museum and have a great time.....very careful and persistent with the covid-19 rules.....
Very interesting reminder in how we havent really evolved much as a society. Really informative and covid aware. Definitely would recommend.
This my second visit in 2 years. Its 70s CORNY, but I still had a good time. Its definitely worth a visit if youve never been here before.
Interesting but was hoping for more. Not terrible considering the price point. Basically, you listen to a prerecorded audio narration while wax presentations are lit to go along with the narrator
Really recommend doing this for first timers in Salem, its a quick tour of history of the witch *including* a timeline and the types of behaviours leading to things of this nature - really cool and brings modern history into the storyline.
It was interesting, but I dont think it was worth the price. Kids were bored of it. We were, too, a little. Gift shop is cool.
I was expecting better. You sit in an auditorium, and listen to the story of the Salem witch trials. The tours are much better than the museum.
Very unique museum with interesting presentations. Wish we had more time in the second presentation to read each passage but it was rushed along a little for the next group to come in.
Total WASTE of time and money. TOTAL. I would never go there even if it was free. All they did was seat everyone in an auditorium. The walls had fixed displays that lit up with narratives...15 mins total. Half of the displays were not visible to those seated by walls. Then another 10 mins of standing to view 2 more displays with narratives. Then limited options (expensive) at the gift store. Totally not worth a single penny. DO visit Salem....but save your moeny and walk around town and enjoy the stores and spend your $ there. Avoid this museum!
I would not recommend. Put in room together with attempt to social distance. But everyone were masks appropriately. But even if it wasn’t Covid I would still give 1 star. The statues were old and decrepit. Cobb webs on some, really gross. They need to tear down and rebuild all the statues in the big room. It looks like they were made 50 years ago. They can do so much better. Time to invest money into something new. Very boring and def not worth the money. I’m still appalled how disgusting it was and how bad of a show it was.Save your time and money and go to peabody Essex museum ( clean great at social distancing and very informative, so much to see!) or do a walking tour.
Nice presentation in the beginning, the audio sound familiar from the movie The Crucible. Basically told the same information just like the other attractions. The second presentation was not very enjoyable.
Informative & attention holding with figures & very new/up to date things. I see a lot of bad reviews about it being political the political aspect is to show that witch hunts still exist and showing how it was so easy to have one occur back in the day which o find informative & necessary. Guide was very fun & friendly and its cool and not overly drawn out.
Alright so ... try and take the last tour before sundown at the “Salem Witch Museum.” It was very informative and they do a story telling right at the beginning . I think it’s great for kids.I kept thinking someone would pop out in the sky with a broom... jk... seriously such an interesting and historical town. It makes me happy how hard they work to keep the city alive and clean !
The venue is nice, and clean, and the employees are friendly and personable. The museum itself is a solid meh. You sit in a room and listen to a narration as mannequins are lit up in correlation to the story- no, they dont move. Then go in to another room where you stand, and the same thing. Its nice but not AMAZING, I think a lot of it is just saying you went. So, I went, and.....meh.
Great story line on injustices on people thought to be witches. Well presented and every question answered. Thank you for telling their story.
This place was great. Very informative and respectful. Nice gift shop at the endWorth a stop!
We arrived for the 11 am”presentation” paid $13 got escorted into a room full of different displays with mannequins that would light up as a recording of man went through the history of the Salem witch trials. Unless you know nothing about Salem don’t waste your money. After that they escort you into another room that talks about the origins of women healers to popular culture.
Cost a few bucks but it’s cool. See the ghost and have fun. Today is a nice day for a nice day for a nice lunch. But today is a witch day, October 31st is a crazy one for this day.Bring the kids
It was not a museum at all. All it does is tell you the story you can already look up and read about.. no artifacts or anything at this place other than a original copy of the book of The wizard of oz which has absolutely nothing to do with the Salem witch trials. This place was entirely to expensive for what you get. Will never recommend it.
A really fun and interesting experience for our family! They shed incredible insight on history in the area! It was a really fun stop while we were up visiting the area for a lacrosse tournament! There are also tons of cute little restaurants to stop into and shops along the way.
Charming!!You can see witchcraft all around! The place has magic in the streets and you can feel the wizardness in the air...
Had a great time. It was very entertaining. Employees were very friendly.
Amusing and quirky. Good information presented in a unique way.
Not a museum in any conventional sense.Everything is a structured presentation that youre stuck in. Cant go at your own pace -- stuck listening to cheesey narrations. Also no real distancing they packed us in.Stay away.
Really great experience! highly recommend going if you are interested in witches and Salems history. The experience wasnt boring and was really interesting!
Its a good show. However for being a museum i was hoping for more information. I was not given information that was not already common knowledge. This was disappointing.
Amazing!! Its outdated, which I think adds to its charm. My boyfriend believes it should be updated. However, I believe that the old school sets and voiceover make it kinda creepy and a perfect Halloween activity.
Nice. Clean. Friendly staff. Only thing that was disappointing is the no picture rule inside the museum.
It’s an interesting experience, but overpriced for what it is. Salem is pretty much a tourist trap all together
Some museums are more than fun. This one is like that. It makes you remember that witch hunting has little to do with witches and can happen to anybody. Gift shop was pure fun though! Love those little witches you can put on the wine bottle :)
Couple of mannequins and a voice over video. Good business model with almost zero overheads, waste of time for consumer
A very informative telling of the events in Salem during the witch trials. Without giving too much away, it’s done in a way that keeps you engaged through the history lesson. There are two parts to the museum, the second one being more of a history of witches in Europe and modern witches.
So awesome. Tons of fun.
I think it is more targeted towards kids, some interesting things. The start of the tour was a little cheesy, the gift shop is almost bigger then the museum. Glad I went but unlikely to return.
Really educational yet cool experience. I also love the little gift shop.
The Salem witch trials occurred in 1692 thru 1693. Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft and 19 were executed. The trials are an example of mass hysteria. In some sense it is understandable, the Massachusetts colony had only been established 60 years before. These people were living on the edge of “Civilization” and there was probably a lot to be fearful of. You can visit the Salem Witch Museum in the town of Salem. The museum tour begins with a presentation of the events of the Salem Witch Trials, then a guided tour where they attempt to explain the historical and modern definition of witches. The cost is $13.00 for adults and $11.00 for children. They offer a discount for teachers. It should be noted that the presentation may not be suited for young children. While we were visiting we saw a young child get scared and the parent had to leave during the presentation. Overall a worthwhile stop if you are in the area.
Soooo when i think of a museum this was not at all what i was expecting which is my fault haha idk if it was due to covid because ive never been there before but it was definitely a unique experience. the downfall id say is its a little slow paced, i would rather have heard the info from a live person with more interest i felt like the male recorded voice was starting to put me to sleep and then the second room was awesome but i felt rushed through it it was disappointing. all around it was decent but idk if i would return. great gift shop and nice and polite workers too.
Ok, needed to go their to complete the salem experience. Same story in all the area atrractions.
Awesome, unique place. Very knowledgeable staff
Hasnt changed in decades and it was wonderful!! They redid the oration to make it more politically correct. So great!
Super disappointed. I wanted to see something from history. I got tacky wax sculptures in a hard to enjoy setting. Felt more like a lesson in politics than history with a lot of inference into religion and judgment. The staff were rude, not helpful. Waste of time and money. Saw better on a YouTube video without the cost.
Definitely a MUST visit spot due to its historical importance in US history. I loved this spot and it was good to also see a witch story in this room. Their gift shop is cute too. Friendly staff and clean location.
Very educational visit. If youre in Salem, definitely worth the visit. If youre in Boston, Id more carefully consider (its a long drive so its most certainly a full day trip, but if youre there for a long time, then why not?). The gift shop was actually really nice.
