The museum was in a small building with a presentation in the upstairs. It was not a very good presentation to keep the attention of the group. The downstairs has automated readings at each station of events. The guide did little talking. It was only about 20 minutes for the tour and it cost $11 per person. It was very expensive and pretty disappointing.
It was just my mom and I there since it was early, and our tour guide was fantastic. He knew so much of the history and made the entire experience so much fun. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
Very informational. It was just myself and my boyfriend in our tour; tour guide was on her phone during the presentation. I cant help but feel like we would have been given more energy and effort if our tour group was bigger, which is a shame because we paid the same amount as anyone else who would come through.
Joey was a great guide full of history and kept it entertaining and at times even humorous. Nice display
Amazing history and explanations to modern day witches and the past and current hysterias!!
It is very interesting and a good place to go if you want to learn more about history in salem
I cannot understand the positive reviews of this tour. For one thing, it is WAY overpriced for what it is. It’s a bunch of animatronic and still mannequins in a basement. You walk through with a few tour guides who tell you an incredibly jumbled and confusing narrative that does NOT tell you the story of the witch trials. I also found it very offensive. The witch trials were a series of crimes perpetrated largely against women. This tour tells you the story of the only men victimized, as well as the confusing and out of order narrative of the sherif. They literally mention only one woman (Tituba) IN PASSING and don’t even tell you what happened to her. The only other woman mentioned was the wife of one of the few male victims and she is literally only mentioned in the context of being his wife. The last thing I expected from a place called The Witch History Museum was a weird sexist mannequin tour by four tour guides. And pandemic-wise, the rooms are VERY small. It is impossible to socially distance in there.
A little hokey but very informative. Guide had a fun, dry sense of humor.
Tour date 8/15/20: This was the biggest waste of $11. The guide (just returning from being off since November) giggled thru her presentation, frequently checked her Apple Watch and talked about her boyfriend at least three separate times. Our small crowd (10 people) were herded thru the dioramas quickly and in line, so I don’t think the people at the end of the line got to see the dioramas “in action,” as the guide turned off the motors as soon as she was done talking. It was very dark and we weren’t even shown the whole set of scenes - the guide bypassed 2 “rooms” scenes in the dioramas. Very disappointed. Don’t waste your money - I hear there are better “witch museums” in Salem. I give it five thumbs DOWN.
One of the reasons we went to Salem is because we have always wanted to go. Be prepared to do a lot of walking (and I mean a LOT!) This museum gives a brief history of how the Witch Trials started, and what took place during the time. The guides themselves are very animated telling their portions of the tour, and it only takes about 45 minutes. There is a nice little gift shop in the museum, so if you are looking to buy anything, you can.
Great value. Great tour of the Salem Witch Hysteria.
Cool place to learn the basics on the witch trials
Very nice tour of witch history
Good stories but pretty expensive for the level of presentation.
Such a cool experience! Really got to learn a lot about something that I vaguely remember from school.
Great overview of the Salem Witch Hysteria. You start out in a large room, sitting in old church pews facing a stage. The guide dressed in period costume comes out and gives an overview of the events leading up to the Salem Witch Trials. Then you descend down to the basement where you walk through scenes depicting people and events of the trials and learn more history. Very informative. Doesn’t take long. Good for restless children because it is brief and you get to move through the scenes.
Andy was the tour guide we were lucky enough to get and we were not disappointed! His energy and knowledge was amazing! I definitely recommend this fun little history lesson of Salem.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept our attention.
Definitely not worth the money! Honestly, its the worst museum Ive ever seen. All it is a really short guided tour of some life size dioramas. No actual exhibits, and you cant stop to look at something for too long or youll miss the next 25 second speech, not that youd care to stop for anything, or really care about what the tour guide has to say. Please save your money!
There is a good amount of information that explains how the witch trials began and ended. The mock up scenes were very well done. This is definitely worth seeing along with the Witch Dungeon Museum and Pirate Museum with their 3 pack deal.
Not a bad experience overall. The mannequins were kind of a bit much, but served their purpose and sort of enhanced the short tour.I enjoyed the fact that each guide seemed to really enjoy their job and was pleasantly surprised at how knowledgable they were on each part. Yes, some of the information I had heard before and the small space underneath was kind of hard to see certain exhibits, but I would still recommend someone to see it.
Great mood & feeling
So I can’t do zero stars? You’ll love this is if you like being ripped off, old wax models or have a penchant for seeing young guides playing on their cell phones. I was sincerely taken aback by how bad it was. We all scrambled for our phones afterwards to write a review. STOP PAYING THESE PEOPLE MONEY.
We basically had a private tour which allowed our awesome tour guide to open up and really give us great insight and personalize a little bit. The mannequin displays were gloriously hysterical.I do think we could do without the Native American mannequins that do not add to the story or history and seem a little off color.
I loved the guides and the information!!!
This may not be the Witch History Museum that you came to Salem for, but it is arguably the better one.Unlike the other, more prominent one; this one is a guided tour and the exhibits are a little more engaging. Our tour guide, Andrew, was very entertaining and jovial. He answered questions from kids and adult alike in the same professional and friendly manner.
Very educational experience. Our tour guide was really funny and informative. The basement where the actual tour happens is creepy and definitely haunted. Would recommend stopping here whilst in Salem.
The staff was incredible. The guide was very well spoken, knowledgeable, and very entertaining. Wasnt as impressed with the scenes set up but it was still a learning experience.
It is something you should do while in Salem
Most of the place was dated and used animatronic mannequins, which would have been ok as a supplement to a better-told story. They should expand upon what information they are trying to convey to people instead of expecting people to analyze the various scenes. The group size was also too large for the space and not everyone could see.
Been coming to Salem pretty much every year around October since 2009 and always make sure to stop here along with 2 other museums included in their bundle (totally worth getting the bundle). Before entering the main area in museum where all the historic recreations are, they seat you in a small theater and give a quick run down of historic events that lead to the Salem Witch trials thats very informative. Afterwards youre taken downstairs to an extensive walkthrough some historic recreations. Each scene is narrated out as you walk through and the recreations are pretty cool to see.
Joey our tour guide was fantastic! He was really informative and very funny! Great experience!
Very friendly staff. I didnt get to take pictures, because I was too busy running around with my three kids. The tour taught my kids some historic situation and they put on a show. My youngest child was restless and the woman running the store said that she would refund the money if my baby didnt sit for the entire thing (which I thought was nice). We enjoyed this place very much.
Good summary of what happened in Salem. This didn’t feel personal and felt more like we were being rushed through the exhibits. The quality of the figurines were alright, though we didn’t feel creeped out or anything by the experience. It may be safe scary experience for younger children.
Most interesting facts await the tourist here. Youll be surprised what actually happened.
When you go to Salem and explore the Witch Trials, you’ll find that the experiences across the museums are redundant, so I wouldn’t recommend this one to be honest, not my favoriteYou sit in a big hall on church pews, the walls have pictures of the original places relevant to the trials, then a tour guide will start narrating a bit of background about Salem, then you walk with the guide downstairs through display figures setting certain scenes with voice oversThe presentation was rushed and a bit incohesive, the figure displays and voice overs are a bit dodgy-looking and it was too short!
The staged manequens were good. The tour quide needs to slow down her speech as difficult to follow when intonations are so variable.
This wasnt that good. When we initially walked in, we sat in a room and a speaker gave us a bit of the background story of the Salem Witch Trials. However, the presenter was very awkward and was not entirely sure about what to say when on stage. There were moments of uncomfortable silence. After that, we got an assisted tour of the museum, which consisted of life size scenes with some audio effects. It was educational, but we shouldve skipped it.
Do not go to Salem in Oct. On street parking is restricted to residents only. Parking in other areas like lots cost $30. There are also lines to go into some shops because they can only allow so many at a time. The line for the witch museum was a 2 hour wait.
Very interesting place to check out for yourself. The tour was very interesting. And extremely informative. Definitely check this place out if ypu can.
This should not be called Witch History Museum. There were no artifacts. There was very little historical context of witches in history. The whole thing was a guided tour around some mannequins dressed to represent the people involved in the Salem Witch Trials. It wasnt awful, but was far from great. We were herded through a relatively short scripted presentation with zero time allowed for questions (that were supposed to be held to the end). Definitely not worth even $10 to me or those in my group. In fact, it seemed gimmicky. There are better, cheaper, things to do in the area.If you like history told at you and if you like mock-ups of history, rather than actual historical artifacts presented with information to consider, you might LOVE this.I did not care for it at all and will not be back.Id like to give 1.5 stars, but I cant; so Im rounding down.
There was so much history and the tour was very good. It really makes you think about what can come from someone telling a lie. Terrible to think of all that had happened.
It was interesting..but loved wax replicas of old monsters like Bet midler..Bela. Logosi..Alfred Hitchcock..and Vincent Price. Fun places too many to count!
They had an agenda that in the end wanted you to feel good about witchcraft and Wicca. The first part was good.
This is a guided tour through a small building that is fitted with various scenes depicting the history of witches in the Salem/New England area. A guide walks you from scene to scene and stops to play an audio narration or explain the history. The tour takes around 20 minutes. The decorations and life-size human figures need some updating. They look quite old and some are unintentionally unsettling. The guides seemed knowledgeable. There is a rest room and gift shop.
Not bad if you are into that stuff. Some historical value.
Very informative tour. The display area was could have been much better. It needs some TLC.
Dated. Update the recordings and mannequins. Interesting yes but I expected more.
Great tour
Have a good overview of the witch trials, staff was very informative and helpful.
Very cheesey but a must see. Just know how it works is you get in line to to get a time slot then you come back and go right in during that time. So get there early to chose the time you want.
The tour is pretty good, one of the people in the group made it hard. Be aware the stairs were kind of hard if you arent stable. Gift area was very interesting..
I REALLY LOVE IT ALOT ITS SO VERY COOL AMD I REALLY WILL LOVE TO GO HERE
I wouldnt do the package with all 3 because some information overlaps.
The tour guide was great she knew her lines!!! It was fun and would go again! 10 bucks well spent!!
Loved the tour there. Had a great time learning about witches
Very intereeting well presented.
Really cool place to learn a lot. The staff where really informative and helpful. Shorter than I expected but really interesting and easy to follow. Well worth ten dollars
Such a beautiful place to visit, a need if you want to know more about the history of Salem and the Witches. Highly recommended!
Great learning experience with friendly staff definitely recommended it out of all the museums here
I would give this a miss. It was overcrowded, which was to be expected for October, but it meant all we saw was peoples backs. The guide apologized at the start about how lame it was 90s models, so youre not missing anything if you cant see. The guide also started talking before everyone had managed to squash into the spaces, so people missed parts throughout.Youd get more from just reading a bit about the Salem Witch trials online honestly.
Definitely not worth the $10/person. It is a walk through of a dusty, poor-lit basement full of creepy old mannequins. The tour takes approximately 15 minutes with the tour guides explaining each station for about 30 seconds and then playing a recording. One of the guides was clear in saying that they didnt have time to answer questions so if we had any, to save them for when the tour was over and ask one of the cashiers. There was no information on this tour that you cant find on Wikipedia about the Salem Witch Trials. There is plenty of other exhibitions and museums that are free, cheaper and better than this gimmick!
Fun experience seeing the history while being guided through the stories associated with the history of the Salem witch trials. Definitely worth the money. They have a gift shop as well with some decent stuff.
Good fun, value and info. Get the combo tickets!
I have been going to Salem and visiting the museums since I was a kid. I mean, if your are from New England, its just one of those things your do. I had friends in town with some 11-13 year old kids with me, and coming from California, they had never been to Salem, but were really intrigued about it. We did a little of museums that day, and the kids were definitely impressed with the Witch History Museum. One of them even said I really wasnt expecting too much, but this is really awesome! They cant wait to come back next year!
The stages they built are very cool... The idea of an experience walking through 1690s Salem is a very good one and they executed it well. It was a little ruined by a less than awesome tour guide, though. For the price, not really worth it.
Nice clean place. Verry quick tour and the workers need to speak up a bit. But the the stories and information is so cool.
Pretty cool place to visit for tourists.
The show at first seemed corny but honestly as it continued I though it cute and informative and fitting for the charming town
Not much here, This is not a museum. There are plenty of other sources for the information presented here. This is overpriced and poorly done. This activity was the low point of my familys northeast vacation. This activity is NOT worth the price of admission ($12).The first thing they do is herd everyone into the main room of an old church. You listen to horrible-quality audio of witch trial information while they spotlight scenes filled with old mannequins. After that presentation, half the group is sent to the gift shop while the other half is taken to a room to learn about the changing perceptions of witches. I watched as many in our group (the group sent to the gift shop) just walked out in disgust. The last part of the perception presentation felt a lot like recruitment to the Wiccan belief system. Overall, my family left this activity feeling scammed and disappointed.
The line was too long so we didnt wait to go in. Dont go in October.
Great fun and educational.
Great walk through. Informative host.
The place shares a historical view of the witch hysteria period in Salem. I believe the price is a bit too much for the length of the tour and specially for the lack of enthusiasm I found in the tour guides. The story however is incredibly interesting and has a certain charm to it. I believe this amazing story could be exploited much further for a better exhibit.
I would not take this tour ever again. The tour was $10 and it took approximately 15 minutes for the entire tour. We were lead into the basement and were explained each station for about 10 seconds via a recording without being able to ask questions. Questions we allowed after the tour and we were told we had to ask the employees in the the gift shop. I wouldn’t recommend this tour to anyone.
Although this was only $10, I dont think it was worth the time. The gift shop is not very interesting. The first room of the tour had a stage and I thought we would see some reenactments. But just some tour guide on stage talking about the beginnings of the with trials. Then you are lead into a dusty basement with very old mannequins dressed up and explained at each station what happened. It was quite crowded and Im sure not everyone was able to see the exhibit. Again, not very interesting.Overall it was not very impressive but i guess it was okay. I think some of the other with museums would be better as the standard here would not be hard to beat.
Had such a great time!
Previous reviewers nailed the experience. The main exhibits are dioramas in building basement depicting events of this brief, tragic American historic incident. Old department-store models in an anachronistic mish-mash of costumes approximating the era, and cringe-worthy depictions of Native Americans. Narration is done partly by live staff (Ill give them credit for soldiering through what they must do) or recordings. Experience diminished if in a full-sized group (which is likely except during non-peak times.)
Interesting tour, lasted only about 25min. Much of the content is covered at the Witch Dungeon tour (dont recommend sing both).
I used to live right by here and me and my mum used to go there all the time its definitely a great place to go!
Nice glimpse at the history of the Salem witch trials
The history part was good. The tour guide needed to slow down and pronunciate more clearly and help all the group to gather to positions for greater visibility. Still glad I went.
Lots of interesting stuff to look at inside.
Extremely interesting destination!
Love the rich history of Salem, MA from witches to pirates and more! This museum is a must see.
Go, its worth it. Very cheesy and the statues/mannequins/whatever you call those are hilarious. The tour guide is great, she gets into character but not too much that you get annoyed by it. Its a quick tour but gives you the history of the area. Note, its very dark when you go down to the tour.
I have been three times on tours. I wish it were better. It could be amazing, but the animated displays are very old. Some live interpreters would enhance it.
We went for Halloween and had a great time. The whole town of Salem is worth a visit.
Many interesting stuff that was never told.
Not worth the money or time. Our guide attempted to throw a ragged costume over her t-shirt and jeans and rushed us through a sad, dingy, dusty, poorly lit museum . The fact that they had hidious mannequins dressed and posed in front of weird vignettes while scratchy tape recordings played over head does not make up for this lack luster waste of money. Its better to just walk along and read plaques along Salem for free.
Great knowledge of the witch trial history.
Went to the witch history museum on my road trip. lots of information the people there were nice and the town is like you just stepped into a Harry Potter movie
