The entrance was a little hard to find as Google maps said it was on the south side, but its actually on the east side. The price for one adult is $7, very cheap!Let me start off by saying that we were lucky visit on a demonstration day. This day is special because the docents (volunteers) dressed up as people from the time the fort was active and were doing the activities that they wouldve done back then. DEFINITELY try to visit the fort during one of these demonstration days. Check their website for more information and dates. The docents were making bread, they had a blacksmith ( and apprentice), they had cooks making food, they had traders, and they even fired off a shot in a cannon! Honestly a fantastic group of people! They were all very knowledgeable about the fort and the history around it. They were all extremely nice and open to answering any and all questions. The shooting of the cannon was definitely a highlight. Another top highlight was the fact that when we were talking to the cooks, one of the ladys actually wrote the book A Taste of the Fort. When we found this out, I went back to the gift shop and bought it and she was very nice and signed the book for me! The gift shop is a cute little with very fair priced items. They even had some activities for kids to do while there was a group of three docents playing music on old instruments! This was a fantastic place to stop by and honestly I wish I could have spent several hours learning everything about it. Definitely work your time! Plan at least two hours for fun learning in my opinion. Lots of history!

Sacramento has a rich history. Not the most tantalizing or salacious, but interesting nonetheless. Sutters Fort is one of those interesting places that makes Sacramento unique. Its always interesting exploring the little nooks and crannies within its walls and imagining what life was like a hundred and eighty years ago.

The staff presentations were fun for the kids as well as very educational. I enjoyed the tour very much! Would come back again for the kids enjoyment. It makes your imagination run through time thinking of life back then, what it must have been like!

Really enjoyed the couple of docents who were there. If you are planning a class trip be sure to get the guided tour or have a plan for students. They no longer have paper scavenger hunts in the kiosk as the website says. We had a hard time finding one online as well. You may want to visit first and make one yourself. But I believe guided tours are the way!

This park is kind of lame and honestly not worth the entry fee unless something special is going on. It is just a self guided walking tour with recorded voice over and each room set up as a different shop. There were some cool artifacts and antiques, but other than that, it was fairly underwhelming.

Honored Elders Day is hosted by the CA Indian Museum currently located at Sutters Fort State Historic Park on the 1st Saturday of June along 26th Street. There are dancers (not pictured here for cultural reasons), vendors, food to buy, and as a bonus the museum is free that day. Its a great event to attend from 10am-3pm. Its best to bring some camping chairs if you plan to stay awhile since the chairs for the event are reserved for the honored elders.

Another of Sacramentos Museums,Sutter Fort State Historic Park! What a great treat, since I love antiques, to peek into some of the many Fort rooms, which gave me a sense of the life those people experienced back then. It surely didnt look easy. One of the docents, let me feel the hardtack they kept, especially for those sailing in boats. They were chunks of hard packed biscuit like squares, that were meant to last for long periods. Once you dip them into stew, theyd soften up enough to eat. @ Sutters Fort State Historic Park

This place is amazing!I learned a lot about this place, the Mexican migration and the golden route. We went in Halloween holidays and they had a representation of the place at the same time. They represented how the people must to be dressed by that time and what they must to be doing, working, walking around, etc. They also let us get in some rooms usually closed to people but open with holidays!!!I really enjoyed this sunny day, taking photos and learning a lot in here.

Beautiful place full of history. Definitely try to take a guided tour or go on Museum Day(like we did). We were able to see them firing off a very old musket. The kids loved it. It was very interactive. My 5 year old was able to play the violin and talk to an actor playing the role of John Sutter and a few other historical figures. Absolutely loved it here and will be coming back again. All the staff was so wonderful, knowledgeable, and kind. The gift shop was pretty awesome. I purchased a few postcards, a stuffed animal, and a raccoon skin hat. It doesnt fit my head but it does my kids and she wears it everywhere know. With all that said I spent less than $25 in the gift shop. Please check it out especially if you are into the history of California.

What an awesome historic park. Sutter’s Fort has been here for over 150 years! What an awesome story of history and building of the city and state. The gold rush began in 1849 by 1850 California became a state and by 1854 Sacramento was chosen to permanently be the state capital. Sutter’s Fort, was the main contributor of the city at the time as well as the railroad. If you are In town and want to learn about Sacramento or California history check out Sutter’s Fort! This is a great place to visit in Sacramento - a must really. As a former handcrafted furniture manufacturer I used adzes and draw or pull knives so it was good to see them on display. But the fort gives good insight to the forefathers of Sacramento and the foundations they laid. Hopefully the Legislators act under the influence of a better spirit today!

Somewhat interesting. I remember quite a few technologies on display at Sutter that my paternal grandparents used when they were subsistence farmers.Corrupt lawyers, banks, and judges used taxes to steal the lands of most subsistence farmers. The politicians supported related corruption.Im disappointed that the historical society for Sutter doesnt talk about the related atrocities directed by Sutter. To in detail show who was harmed by Sutter militant operations. History rewritten to support the oppressors. Those suffering oppression, unrepresented.

Nonetheless they were willing to locate it right next to the fort that brought so much suffering to native people. Strength, pride, incredible perseverance yet forgiving and still willing to fight for their country their land their way of life the beautiful heritage under the flag of their nation our nation.Hear the truth see the truth feel the truth in your hearts and speak the truth and let kindness and compassion and love of all the worlds creatures define your actions and impact on the world. Today was free to museums day and we chose to visit Sutters Fort. Clean and well organized. The kitchen was busy preparing a very satisfying lunch for the docents in the original kitchen using original cookingware like cauldrons, ladles, and a wood fire. The aroma was satisfying also. The outdoor bread oven was not in use, disapointment because its the best display in my opinion and you get to taste it but that didnt take away from the rest of the visit. Our kids know little to nothing about how we struggled to get the conveniences we have unless their part of a historic education like displayed here. I wanted to buy a wool blanket but they dont sell them because for demonstration reasons it takes a long time to make today what took 3 days to make just one back then, still a long time, a lot of work you will see.It was well staffed, they knew a lot and I was disappointed seeing bars in doorways. I was a student we visited with our class (a long time ago lol) and we were able to touch and see original artifacts up close. I asked a docent where Mr. Sutters office was as this is a prime memory of mine, she explained the location of which I visited, is blocked now to preserve artifacts from making away from the display as many others are too. I was taught to look and not touch. A great educational and historical visit you must add to your next museum visit checklist ask questions and learn a bit more. Donate and ring the bell!! Visit the gift shop and grab some fun trinkets or gifts for those that appreciate. Thank you to all that volunteer your time to preserve our history. We have come a long way and its important to know we have a great future to include later. Thank you

Excellent place to visit, well done exhibits that chronicle early settlements and the gold rush period. Different rooms are fixed up to show what a typical bedroom or kitchen of the time would have looked like with audio narration. Its part of a larger park area, so if you are traveling with kids, the park is a place to have a picnic (but no food inside the fort enclosure itself).
