Love the history of this building. Located close to the Capitol, the Leland Stanford Mansion transports the visitor to a different era. The grounds are immaculate and the juxtaposition of this building with more modern structures is visually striking.

Came here on Halloween because we heard it was haunted. Ran into Megan and she was wonderful. Stopped and talked to us about the mansion and was able to take us on a tour. She was great and so informative. Made this experience GREAT! Thanks Megan.

What a fantastic place, since the covid no inside tours as of yet. But you can stroll the outer grounds. Before the tours were free,I’ve been on five tours and each guide gives you more info and different parts of the house. Five stars all around.

The mansion offers excellent free tours of the house.- Youll get to see what the house looked like over the years. The house and most of the levels showcases beautifully well preserved architecture and furnishings. Other levels show off what the house looked like when it was remodeled to become an orphanage.-The tour guides are friendly, interesting, and can answer pretty much any questions you can think of. Definitely pay this land mark a visit!

Beautiful mansion that was the office of the Governor during the Civil War. More recently it was the second office of Schwarzenegger. The grounds are kept vintage Victorian. The entire mansion and grounds are operated by California State Parks. Walk up Tours available...check the State Parks website for hours.I took these photos in the early morning. The juxtaposed image of Victorian Sacramento against a 1960s high rise is beautiful.

No Photography Allowed in the house, so leave your cameras at home. The place is okay if you just want a brief encounter with freemasonry, but all and all its a mansion built by the Californian elites of the late 1800s. Its the kind of place you go to once, and thats bout it. Its nicer to walk around the garden and leave.

Im so glad that we made time to do the mansion tour while we were in Sacramento! We started our day at the State Capital building for the free tour there which provided us with an excellent historical overview of Sacramento. We then walked over to the Leland Stanford Mansion for the tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and walking through the house was fascinating! All the information we learned complimented the information we had gotten at the state capitol. So, it was great to do these two tours in order. I would highly recommend this to anyone passing through Sacramento. Another note: From the mansion, we walked over to the State Library (914 Capitol Mall) and that was a great stop, as well! They have a self guided tour and some very significant murals, architecture, etc. inside to see.

My friend and I were out wandering Sacramento and just stumbled across the mansion. We walked around it trying to find the entrance and when we finally got in we realized we were there an hour early for the tour. While debating whether we should hang out or take off Joe at the front desk started up a conversation about movie stars and actors. We sat there for about 45 minutes talking about different actors and movies and actually watched some trailers with him. It was a very pleasant experience and finally our tour time rolled around and Joe ended up being our guide. We were the last tour of the night so on top of having a really fun walk through the mansion filled with facts and laughs we got a couple behind the scenes moments with him. Joe has only been working there a short while but man was he knowledgeable and funny. It was definitely a 10/10 experience for me and we were very happy that we just stumbled across the mansion that day! Will return and highly suggest you go. There are some stairs so if those are an issue be wary but overall its not too much walking just a lot of standing. Thank you again Joe for such a pleasant experience!

My partner in crime and I have been to the *other* governors mansion in town, but hadnt visited LSM yet. On Saturday, while celebrating our 11th anniversary, we planned a visit to check out what this site was all about. The lobby is packed with great info on the development and history of the mansion Its INCREDIBLE what changes the home, the property, and Sacramento has gone through over the last 100 years. Our guide, Ryan, was so friendly and patient with the kids in our group. He had a very obvious passion for his job and for the history of the mansion and its owners and residents over time. I feel like I learned so much about Sacramento simply from our short little visit to this beautiful home.I am SO THIRSTY to sneak a peek at the rooms were not allowed to enter. You wont see it all because there isnt photographic evidence to help restoration of certain parts of the home. DO NOT expect to take any photos during the tour (you can outside of the mansion) and make sure to hydrate first because theres no opportunity to drink while youre inside.Very friendly docents, very informative and amazing tour, and its an incredible part of Sacramentos history.

The Leland Stanford Mansion is just absolutely gorgeous. I was very enamored of the grand architecture. Some of the decorative elements are reproductions, however most are original to the mansion. Unfortunately, no photography is allowed inside the mansion, due to the California executive security detail. The mansion is used by the governor for hosting events involving visiting dignitaries, hence the censorship of photography. Regardless of this, I strongly recommend visiting this California treasure, for she is probably the sole surviving residence of one of Californias big Railroad Four, Governor Leland Stanford. The tour is free to the public, and the mansions history is absolutely unique.

This is one of Sacramentos hidden gems and its FREE!!! Here you will see all manner of fine art. Everything from paintings, drawings, sculpture and lavish arcetectual room designs. The tour guides clearly love their jobs and unlike alot of other tours they are very happy to answer all questions. The tours usually start at the top of every hour. Considering how much visuals and interesting history you get, a tour like this would normally cost 20$ plus but its totally FREE!!! Do miss this opportunity.

Wonderful and (free) museum, though I would highly recommend a donation, as the docents and guides here are high passionate people and know their history. Coming here on a weekday, you will get a *private* tour, as there are not a lot of visitors. As some background, this was Leland Stanford (co-founder of Stanford University)s original residence.
