I brought my grandchildren to the science museum today. The museum was wonderful. Very interactive and filled with amazingly interesting exhibits. The best part was the lightning show and the kindest staff member named Mark. There was no show scheduled, however, he brought us into the theater and gave us the best experience, answered the kids questions and gave us his undivided attention. Mark, thank you. My grandson decided to do his 3rd grade writing assignment on lightening as a result of your kindness and willingness to share your knowledge and time!
Great attraction for all ages! Three stories of Interactive exhibits around every turn and different age appropriate hands-on stations. Variety of educational exhibits that allow children to learn and think. Imagination center was closed. Open in the afternoon. Wish there was more for toddler aged children with less coordination.
Was very disappointed at the misrepresentation of price. When we called we were told that admission for participants of the Museums for all program was $1, when we arrived we were told $4, and then we were charged $9.50. We pointed out that the math didnt add up, but the woman behind the counter wasnt bothered by our facts and charged us nearly $100 for a trip that was supposed to be $10. Shame on them. I guess they must be hemorrhaging money if they have resorted to this. As far as the museum- its a bit outdated, and has had many of the same exhibits since we moved here. Many of the attractions dont even work. The 2nd floor hasnt changed in a couple of years.. Also, a lot of activities are closed for COVID-19, or just arent working. They turned their theater into chair storage. See pic. I hate to compare it to my previous citys science museum, but OMSI in Portland OR puts this place to shame. Get with the times people. If youd like a good museum experience in Rochester, go to the Strong Museum.
A great place to come, learn about science and history. There are many interactive activities at the museum like going on a submarine ride, climbing the rock wall, feeling a earthquake and more. Dont forget to stop by the planetarium to watch the stars and the constellations. I highly recommend it.
We are from PA and searched for something to do in the area. This place was perfect! So much fun!
Nice quiet interactive science center. Lots of interesting things to look at, and great for kids. Some exhibits closed for Covid, and some not working correctly, but overall a great place to spend the afternoon
Kids enjoyed it. Lots to do. Science shows great dude was very enthusiastic. Learned a lot.
Were thrilled to be neighbors of this amazing institution! Our kids never get tired of the exhibits (both permanent and new) and they attend awesome educational and fun camps there, and even I as an adult learn new things every time we visit. My husband and I also love the Uncorked and Untapped event every year (and they have a lot of other fun 21+ events too).
Amazing! Wonderful account of our local history. I appreciated how they focused on the local regions history, which is rich in diversity & substance. Reading the signs next to the displays reminded me of how my fathers ancestors were land grant families in western NY. It also reminded me that while the natives lived in harmony with nature, they too had skirmishes & took other natives hunting land, ... Wars & taking land was & is still part of world history. This museum makes no excuses. It teaches us history, plain & simple. It also showed how since the early 1500s, the natives have mixed with European genes, resulting in natives appearing to be of European origin, yet genetics do not lie. The 1st settlers to the Americas were of Asian origin & heritage. Most mixed with Europeans, probably starting in the early 1500s. Weve had 500 years of mixing genes in the Americas, but dont get it twisted. Asians discovered America 12,000 to maybe 25,000 years ago. Then perhaps Polynesians or such 1,000 years ago, along with Vikings 900 years ago, or so. The ancient Japanese island people too, earlier than Columbus. My dads ancestors came here in the early 1600s. Nothing to sneeze at. Im proud of my heritage too. I remember as a youth growing up in Webster, near our house was a stream in an apple orchard. We used to find flint arrowheads once in awhile, lining the stream bed. Back then, we did not realize the great history of the natives in the area. It is good to teach children early & often about native and European local history, so they appreciate both. I wish I saved those arrowheads, but we threw them into the creek. Once I found a US penny dated 1840 in front of my familys yard, the date Webster was incorporated. I donated it to the Webster museum. I wondered if they ever displayed the penny. They should have. It might have been in Webster since 1840. You never know. 12/31/19; I brought my friend. We had a blast. Interesting educational black history exhibit.
This was a great way to pass some time. A lot of the exhibits were closed due to the virus but the kids still enjoyed themselves.
Curiosity Camps for the summer are a favorite of my kids. They love going and exploring science and learn so much there. This year with COVID-19, I am so happy with the efforts and precautions they are taking with the care of the kids and staff.
This place is amazing! The staff are curious and helpful. The exhibits are interesting, well taken care of and entertaining. We showed up late and only had about two and a half hours, so we were trying to rush. Rushing wasnt enough to see everything. We were also lucky enough to visit when the singing Tesla coils were putting on a show in the electric theater. It was amazing!
Its a good learning atmosphere. Theres many informations that will add up to your study.
Love this place and so does my child although it could use some renovations and upkeep. I see some staff members that have been here for years and they all contribute great value to this museum with their knowledge and people skills especially dealing with kids of all ages. I like the small science show displays where the kids get involved. Also when they bring animals in and do a live show and tell. They also have this cool show with Tesla Coils where they use music to manipulate the voltage, volunteers can enter a cage and see the performance close and personal. They have a nice Native American History exhibit and local Rochester History. They are planning to renovate their Cafe. A definite place to go to with children.
My family and I are all about the Rochester Museum of Science Center from all the learning hands on activities to the exhibits to the shows (we went to electricity theatres the last two times weve gone and I got to go in the cage) we love all of it and have a great time every time. We will return very soon.
Super place to spend an afternoon! So many exhibits, everytime you look you find something new. Learn something new each time we are there.
Wonderful museum. It has a learning environment.
They have very cool jungle gym for claustrophobic toddlers
This is Rochesters gem for hanging out with the family!! Brought my 2 kids (5 & 2) and my wife for the day and had so much fun. We live in the Finger Lakes and it was well worth the drive. So much to do and learn for the kids AND us!
Great experience for kids and adults alike! This vast museum is designed well and covers a variety of subjects, from interactive scientific stations to detailed 3D models depicting peoples from centuries past to a variety of preserved animals. This museum is definitely veered towards kids, but our group of 9 (from 15 to 55) all had just as much fun as the kiddos! One of our favorite spots was a station with video equipment set up with a green screen so you can be your own weatherman. There is a ton to do so make sure you leave early enough to take it all in or get an annual pass. Prices were 15$ per adult and 14$ for seniors but I dont remember how much a kids ticket was. Groupon offers annual passes for either two or three adults as well as all children under 18 get in free, so check it out before visiting the museum.
It has very nice exhibitions of native Americans habitats and history of upstate NY. For scientific stuff, it has various items but a little difficult for kid and not intuitive. However it has variety of scientific stuff.
My kids go to the pre school so before class starts I usually ran to the museum with them so they can check it out and have some fun. They love it there are a lot of exhibits that are constantly changing so the kids dont get bored.
Great place to take the kids for the day! Lots of fun and interactive displays and activities to do. We love the signing Tesla coil preferences!!
I understand a lot of the exhibits could not be open due to Corona virus but I feel the museum itself needs to be updated saying it has the same exhibits it had when I was a child and Im 36 years old.
Fun for all ages! However there were a handful of things that werent working.
Wanted to love it, but too many exhibits weren’t working. It’s not super cheap so I expected things to be in good working order. The facility itself is a wonderful asset to have in the area.
This is truly an incredible place. My two children (5yo and 2yo) absolutely love it here. We usually gone once a week, sometimes twice! And Emily is having her birthday party there soon. There is so much to do (way more than you could do in a day), and they are always switching out exhibits to keep things fresh. Cant recommend enough.
An amazing facility with something for everyone. Whether youre a lifelong learner, a parent with children, a teacher, or someone that just wants to learn (and have fun doing it), theres something for you at the RMSC!
The RMSC is a wonderful place with dynamic programming! BTW - the Strasenburgh Planetarium reopens to the public on 1/12! The renovations are extraordinary!
Had a great time here the only critiques I have is when I went in the womens bathroom I was completely thrown off that the window was open where you could look in from the parking lot straight into the bathroom What happened to privacy? I tried closing the blinds but it seemed stuck which is probably why they left it that way but still no one wants to use the bathroom and have someone from outside watching. The sandbox area should be monitored. We were having a great time until a child from a field trip came over and started throwing sand on everyone. There was no parent or teacher with him. I would go again just on a day that there are normally no field trips.
Museum is ALWAYS Recommended by me...
Im hoping you respond to this post. I have 3 pieces of pottery that I have had for over 50 years. I obtained them from my parents home in Stafford new York. I see you did an excavation of the Morganville pottery works many years ago. I am trying to authenticate these pieces however there ar no trademarks on them. Are you able to help me?
I like this place because they have almost have the beginning of creation. A lot ofthe time we do not know where we are going and we dont know where wed come from.
The SciFi Tech exhibit was very interesting! I recommend going to the RMSC website and following the directions to get a buy one get $5 off the second ticket discount.
The 2 stars are for the Planetarium at this site. That was pretty cool. The museum tho... Boring. Same as I remembered it 30 years ago. We Wanted to get a snack and drink but by 230 pm the cafe was already closed. Ok vending machine it is! ... Nope, it took payment but wouldnt dispense drinks. Front desk gave us our money back but hungry and thirsty didnt promote us to want to stay much longer. Overall disappointing.
The staff at RMSC is always so friendly and helpful! My kids (ages 10-16) enjoy spending time there and its nice to see that theyre always working on improving and updating things. TIP: Look for deals on memberships on Groupon.
Fun for adults too ..
Enjoyed this Museum since I can remember. Fun to see crowds for the Solar Eclipse.
Here are lots of activities for active kids, with less for adults here. Its expensive, but we were there for three hours—having fun most of the time. The worst experience was the light and music show, which is frankly boring. But we enjoyed many of the exhibits that explained the history of the area, as well as the interactive ones, such as the hurricane simulation, the under-the-lake sub, and the weather report. There were small fees for some of these.
You know, for as much as they charge for tickets youd think the exhibits would work! What a rip off. Very underwhelming.
Fabulous Rochester amenity open to all ages. A must experience for all Rochester residents and non-residents alike. Tons of hands on exhibitions as well as unique experiences. You will not be disappointed.
One of the best science museums
Great place! Lots of fun things to do and see for all ages. Planetarium was very cool with multiple different types of shows. In the museum there was lots of cool show including an electricity show with man made lightning! Friendly staff too! Definitely consider visiting this place.
Very nice museum with a lot of stuff to see and learn.
We never feel like weve spent enough time at the RMSC! Its always fun for hours and hours. My husband find ourselves really enjoying our time there as well. Our children love every inch of this place because its so interactive. Great place. Definitely worth a stop!!
Rochester Museum & Science Center is a smart choice to know more about local history because it has a great connection that shows in exhibits. I was there to book memories bus tours rochester ny was the way to see all exciting places like Rochester Museum to know more about local history. All over its an entertaining educational place which encourages teenagers to travel more. I went there with two young boys, Michele and Robbert. Who love gift shop and exhibits.
This is truly an incredible place.
Awesome, huge, and extremely educational museum! Didn’t have enough time to check out the whole place even though I was there for 4 hours! From music, electricity, science, space, and Rochester/Northeast history - this place almost has everything. Great museum for both kids and adults!
The Museum is GREAT! THE SHOW WITH THE INDIVIDUALS WITH TRAMATIC BRAIN INJURIES WAS ABOVE ALL MY FAVORITE. EXTREMELY NICE SURPRISE WITH THE SPEAKERS AND ANIMALS️
We have a membership to a science museum in a neighboring city so its free for us to go here. We come pretty frequently (twice a year maybe). Usually when we come, theres a different theme on the third floor. Theres many interactive activities for the kids, but also some classic science museum items such as the wholly mammoth, civil war exhibit, and other exhibits for adults. Overall, I nice well rounded museum.
We took our grandchildren and they enjoyed the experience immensely. They would love to go back. The hands on was a great learning experience. Wishing Buffalo had something like this.
Amazing Place for the kids, natural history, physical science, astrological science, the sound sense exhibit was really cool, and my boys loved the inventor area too. We bought a membership and will be going back several times in 2019.
Ive loved this place since childhood, and now I take my nephews here! Its an amazing place for kids to play and learn. A Rochester gem. However, I just called them to ask a question, and a young lady spoke to me very rudely and unprofessionally!
Great place for the whole family. The kids and adults loved it. There is history, science and a Ripleys Believe it or Not section. The kids especially loved the hands-on science and technology area. I loved the history area, especially the Indian exhibits. There is so much to look at and learn about.
The kids love going to the RMSC!
If you are looking for something to do, this a MUST SEE space. It has something for the whole family!!!!
Been a few times with the kids and have a different experience every time. Friendly staff and interesting displays.
This is a very fun place. Lots of exhibits to learn and have fun. Last time I went here was for a wedding reception and I enjoyed it.
Clean. Friendly staff. Incredible hands on exhibits. My niece always wants to come here when they come in from out of town. Adults dont get bored. You can play too.
Honestly I was decently surprised when I visited. The staff is exceptionally friendly right when you walk in, and the exhibits, while small, were laid out well and informative and interesting. It has a great history of the entire region in contrast to other museums where it jumps from location to location. I think the air conditioning was malfunctioning on the second floor, but thats a minor issue. Id recommend its worth at least one visit, and its not geared only to children.
The museum is a nice local resource. The museum itself is about one-third Natural History and two thirds Interactive Science exhibits. The museum also has great summer camp activities for kids of all ages. Parts of the museum are a bit dated, but not to the point that child would ever notice.
The summer camps are unbelievable. I wish I were a kid again so that I could attend. Tons of staff present and run by professional educators. Really a positive experience for my kids. I just wish the inside of the museum could get an update. A lot of the same exhibits from when I was a kid.
Amazing staff and fun exhibits & events for all ages!
Was kicked out of a show in auditorium announced for everyone because it was not open to public. Very poor behavior
Very fun place, it also has a food court that is very convenient as you can go look around and then eat. It is very informative too. When I went i learned some new things that I didnt know before.
Love this place, we come frequently and membership is totally worth it. Great place to hang out with or without the kids
Great place for learning physics!
My daughter and I LOVE visiting the RMSC
Interesting place. Grandkids had a blast. Adults will enjoy it as well. Theres a lot of hands on for the kids. We are definitely going back.
Five stars for the museum. One star for the parking. It was February break so I expected it to be busy. When we came out cars had essentially double parked where there were no spaces available to make it impossible to back out our spot. Went back inside, security was summoned. They did their best to find the offenders. Eventually the people in the car next to us came out and were able to get out which allowed us to get out. We waited for 45 minutes to get out because inconsiderate people decided to make a parking spot where there was not one mucking up the entire traffic flow.
Interactive and educational. Submarine simulation is intense
The museum is a nice local resource. The museum itself is about one-third Natural History and two thirds Interactive Science exhibits.
I made an appointment for today (at 9:30am) about 4 - 5 days ago to view the Rochester Museum and Science center as a wedding venue. As I had other appointments, this is the one I had my eye on for several reasons. I got a phone call from the lady I spoke with to make the appointment at about 9:25am, Sara, I excitedly told her I was on the way. She replied flustered and I couldnt figure out why, she said she had an appointment at 9am. Didnt know she was talking about my appointment! I said do you need more time? She replied, yeah I said ok, my fiancé and I will get some coffee and come in after? She said, You just come in when it works for you. We came in about 15 minutes later, waited for her at the lobby for about 5 - 10 minutes, no big deal. She rudely greets us and said, Im in a little bit of a time crunch because you were supposed to be here at 9am and now its 9:45. Im confused because on the phone I felt she was directing me to take my time? Also Im upset because we were ABSOLUTELY scheduled for 9:30am. I told her that this was the place I wanted to have our reception and I wouldnt have mistaken the time. She then argued with me about the correct time of the appointment as she was showing us the venue, again, super rude and arrogant about it.I understand miscommunication happens. When she called me at 9:25am she should have let me know that she thought I was coming in at 9, we would have rushed there or figured it out for a different time. She didnt need to be passive aggressive and tell us to take our time, and be rude to us when we excitedly arrived 15 minutes later.Glad we arent getting married here because I wouldnt want to deal with this passive aggressive and rude behavior any longer.
Our family has had a membership ever since we moved back to the Rochester area. There are a LOT of things to do, and we come here with our daughter at least once a month (sometimes more than once a week...). Great combination of hands-on activities and more traditional exhibits.
We visited the RMSC with our two children and my parents and had a wonderful time. The exhibits are interesting for kids and adults alike. I love how many interactive activities there are for kids of a wide variety of ages.
A great all-around science center right in Rochester. I have been to others, including Toronto, and Rochester really competes. There are so many things to do. Fun and educational for the entire family.
So much fun! love how interactive almost everything is! the live show was awesome as well
Awesome exhibits for kids of all ages. Plenty of hands-on opportunities and they had speakers / classes even on Memorial day. Lots to keep the kids entertained!
Great place to go to learn new and exciting scientific discoveries. Great place for kids and adults.
We love this place. Wonderful exhibits, and the family membership is definitely worth is. The planetarium is a blast too, great shows rotating through.
What a hidden treasure! So many cool exhibits for kids and adults to enjoy! Would highly recommend a season pass and make several trips!
Love. Love. Love. Great gem in the city of Rochester
The RMSC staff goes out of their way to make every experience fun for the kids and pain free for the parents. They make the museum and its activities easily enjoyable!
We love all things about the RMSC, have had family memberships for many years. Great experiences for the kids and us adults alike.
Love it
It was very fun and interactive for me but every time i have gone there i have gotten something in the geode. this time they ripped us off i didnt get even a sparkle. im very mad that i payed for that.
Such amazing exhibits have come through here, what amazing curators, for keeping museum attendance high in the new millennium
Great place to visit. Something for everybody. Kid friendly. Planatarium is amazing.
If you love seeing science in action and want something fun to do with friends or kids. This is the place to go.
This is a place you have to take your family to. It doesnt cost much and it helps to expand your childs imagination through science. It simply is the best place in Rochester to go to.
Great place lots of interactive exhibits for the kids. Temporary excibits and then theres the planetarium which has the most awesome movies.
This place was not a good idea for a date to bring your parents on. We went to some fire show, and I never even thought I was in danger at all. There was one cool tightrope that we couldnt walk on. But overall underwhelming
Love the place but not the cafeteria, not gonna lie food was ok but very messy place and there was a mouse running around and made me lose my whole appetite.
This is a decent science center. A wide selection of exhibits, including a lot about the history of Rochester and the area. One of the coolest exhibits was the Tesla Coil theatre.
Kids had a great time. Place is very clean. Also lots of interactive stuff.
The best wedding Ive ever been to! What an idea - a wedding at the museum. Gorgeous space, delicious food and free access to the museum? Yes please.
This place is very fun for kids of all ages. And be sure to check out the electricity theater.
A smaller science center but contains some interesting exhibits; great for adults and children; a little small for a science center but nice nonetheless.
My experience with RMSC was extremely disappointing. We brought our 2 older children (6.5 and 4.5) to see the dinosaur exhibit. I was pretty sure the other exhibits would be beyond them, but figured we could explore the ones that were more appropriate after the dinosaurs which was the real draw for us. It cost 4 of us (2 adults and 2 children) $62 to get in. The experience was possibly worth $20. The dinosaur exhibit was far from exhilarating. The robotic dinosaurs were cool and intriguing for the kids. They made great noises and moved in an engaging way. However, that was the extent of the exhibit. We were done with it in 45 minutes (and that was only because we milked it for every single second we could). There were not a large number of dinosaurs there and they were all located in one small room. This was not even close to what I was expecting. Many of the other hands on exhibits in the museum did not work or were not appropriate for kids under 10-12 (and even then, only for very science geared children). The information provided at each exhibit was minimal at best and did not provide for a true, engaged learning experience. There were some special events today: making slime and a fire fighter visit. We thought maybe the kids would enjoy this. The slime was a complete bust. There were 2 young teenagers manning the station and neither had any clue about the process. The slime wasnt working and all they could do was apologize. Neither of them thought to get help from someone else. Finally, what I assume to be a supervisor wandered by to check on them and asked them how it was going. When they said it wasnt working, he made a limited attempt to try the slime himself and walked away without providing a solution to the workers or the kids wanting to make slime. The firefighters were supposed to arrive at noon. At 12:10, they were nowhere to be found, so I decided to ask where they were (thinking maybe I had made a mistake). No one on the floor where they were supposed to be housed knew anything about them, so I went to the front desk. They said, Oh, I dont know. Maybe they havent gotten here yet. As I was about to walk away, a fire man came in. He started talking to the 2 employees at the desk and between the three of them, no one knew what he was supposed to be doing there. He finally made it to his exhibit area and he was very kind to my son and daughter, gave them firefighter hats, and spoke to them, but it wasnt quite what I was hoping it would be (no equipment, no demos; just one guy in a blue uniform). Please know, I am not unhappy with the firefighter... he is a hero who needed to be better prepared and directed by the museum. He is not at fault, the museum is.In all, I expected so much more from the museum. If I were you, I would skip this museum in favor of almost anything else in Rochester. As a result of my abundant disappointment, I will never return to this museum again and I would not recommend it to anyone. It simply is not worth the admission cost.
It is a wonderful learning experience. Highly recommend for young and old!
