Stopped in to the new Reef Shoppe today. Ive been out of the hobby for many years, but I use to frequent this business when my reef tank was up and running. Beautiful & so clean

The freshwater selection was okay all the popular fish plus some unique ones. Tanks seemed well cared for. Employees seemed friendly. Parking and entrance are in the back. Prices were good if youre looking for something that cant be found in box store. The live freshwater plant selection was not good.

They may noy have the variety of hardware and might be a bit more pricey on some things than some bigger stores, but they stock equipment and brands they know work well from their own experience. Their livestock prices are good and their fish are beautiful, far better than any other place in Rochester that I have looked in. Their tanks are extremely well taken care of as well. I will definitely be going back.

I’m a new reef hobbyist. I’ve had fish only in the past but always shied away from reef tanks. Tom has walked me step by step in starting my reef tank. Tom has never pushed any sales. There have been times when I would ask about a product and his answer…”not needed right now”. I appreciate that! Tom has taken the time answer questions even when it has been very busy at the Shoppe. Tom’s staff is always courteous and helpful.I also know one of the businesses The Reef Shoppe has setup a reef environment and has scheduled maintenance. I personally know one of the staffers. The Reef Shoppe is an absolutely awesome store. The livestock are in excellent health and the corals are just amazing. The staff is ready to help you with any questions and extremely knowledgeable. They have been instrumental in helping me transition from fresh water planted tanks to reef tanks. They are more concerned about your success in the hobby over selling you something you don’t need or is not a good fit for your setup. Being a newbie there have been countless times where I could have purchased something that would have been a waste of money or even disastrous, however they have been able to talk me off the ledge every time. I’ve gone back to do my research every time to find that they were correct in what they were saying. I’ve been going to the store about once a week for the last year and every time I find something I’ve never seen before. They offer the best of both worlds in fresh water and saltwater. If you are in Rochester for the first time make sure you get a Garbage Plate then go to the Reef Shoppe both with leave you satisfied!

This is the most incredible place. Much more than a store, its a destination. They have the healthiest most beautiful stock and vast experience they share freely to make you confident and successful from the very start- along with the most amazing customer service. If you want to experience arrogance, high prices and elitism, this is the place for you. I was very put off by the sales persons bashing of his competitors when I inquired why his prices were higher (in some cases, 3-4 X higher). He openly spoke of specific stores and owners, which I found unprofessional. When I asked specific questions about the care of my particular breed of fish (I am not new to this hobby), I was met twice with an actual scoff. I felt like he was put off and insulted that he had to answer my stupid question. He left me three times to speak with other customers who were interested in purchasing hundred dollar fish, rather than deal with me. The decor of the store is very pleasant. You can tell that they care for their fish with quality. However, from my perspective they care more about your wallet than you as a customer and display unprofessional qualities that are very off putting. I will not purchase anything from this store as a result of my visit.

Just started with the tank cycle and stopped in the reef shoppe today..Tom took the time and explain a lot of info on saltwater aquariums.. bought my first fish and other items to give my tank the boost it needed.not only did Tom help me but gave me a cooler so the fish would be alright for the travel home. Ive been in the aquarium hobby for over 35 years. Ive seen reef shops across the US, from Old Town Aquarium in Chicago to WorldWideCorals in Orlando and the best that many other markets have to offer. Each shop has its own personality and you can often tell which is going to be right for you if you stop into enough of them. The Reef Shoppe in Rochester NY is literally one of the coolest reef aquarium stores Ive ever seen. The vibe simply works. The displays are a testament to their knowledge, success and design aesthetic. On top of all of that, the guys are understanding, flexible and reasonable. Advice is only worth it if taken. I would take any advice on the hobby from this team.

Great guys working there took my kids in tonight to pick out some new fish for the new tank. After they got to check out all of the awesome salt water Aquariums they have in there they found some fresh water fish that the associate was very knowledgeable about and picked them out. Do not bother to go to chain pet shops. The Reef Shoppe has helped me establish my aquarium step by step until I have a truly unique tank with unusual fish. Especially Mr. Wiggles. Tom and Rob and the staff at The Reef Shoppe have been outstanding!Although we have a smaller hex tank at the house and are new to the hobby, Tom and his guys have been a huge help in getting us through the learning curve of being new to saltwater tanks. A larger tank is definitely in our future!Like anything new, there is so much info to take in and filter through, but the Reef Shoppe has helped us right along in the process.Their passion for all things aquatic shows through in how they interact with customers. Some might take this in the wrong way (from what Ive read from a couple of the other reviews), but dont get them wrong. When you know your stuff like they do, there isnt much gray area for them to debate.Great job guys! Keep it up!

Always very informative staff and most obliging. They carry a comprehensive line of products and have accommodated me several times in sourcing filter parts that would only be available online with high shipping charges. They may not be the cheapest outfit in town when it comes to livestock but they care about the customer and more importantly about the hobby, if you think they are pricey you should get a different hobby!Since going to the reef shoppe for the last few years I have found the staff to be very knowledgable and helpful; although I have just starting learning about fish keeping I know that they dont and wont sell me fish for my tank that are not compatible. Every fish that I bought there is still thriving and for that reason alone I will not buy livestock anywhere else in Rochester to try and save a couple of dollars; why would you want to pinch pennies at the expense of risking the well-being of your aquarium??

The ONLY competently ran store in the Rochester area with knowledgeable staff (and therefore SOUND advice) to shop for live stock and supplies. The only time I seem to have issues with my tanks is when I listen to the advice of the nearby competitors!

I have set up two reefs and a freshwater planted tank with the guys at The Reef Shoppe. Their knowledge is unparalleled whether it is equipment, coral, livestock husbandry. They are an awesome source for different corals. They maintain their systems pristinely. I buy ALL of my livestock here and have never had an issue with disease or cooties. They truly care about the animals. I wont go anywhere else.

Tom was great. Im new to salt water and went somewhere else to buy set up . then went to the reef shop a week later,and met tom and found that I had good start but I had made some questionable choices on filtration and lighting. Well I started with 75 gallon, and after seeing the best quality tanks and fish with the most vibrant color coral I had decided that I wish I had met tom a week earlier. Well tom was very honest with a no bs attitude and explained to me the rite fundamentals to be a successful salt water enthusiest. So I purchased a whole new set up from tom. I upgraded to a 180 gallon tank and sump system with skimmer.I could not be happier with my choice and have found a new home with the reef shoppe . thanks to tom and his crew!!!!!!

Weve been with The Reef Shoppe for over 5 years. We had salt water tanks maintained by a local competitor who destroyed our tanks. They let the algae get so bad that the tanks could not be recovered. We switched to The Reefe Shoppe and have had wonderful service, quality tanks and fish. I wont have anyone else touch our tanks. We are looking to buy another tank this year.

Tom is a good guy but there was a different guy there and im not sure of his name but he sounded like tom so maybe his brother? anyway this guy was very rude and almost condescending. im relatively new to the hobby and have done some reading and have a 125 gal tank thats running great and its nice to get feedback from knowledgeable people but when i asked him a question it was almost as if he was challenging me with some of his responses/questions. rude and unprofessional. not to mention their prices are sky high. i wont ever buy anything for my tank there again. the guys at Caribbean Forrest are way friendlier and have better quality stuff. they will be getting my business.
