As a Catholic person, the term Madonna has a very specific definition. This is not it. Kansas City, my home town has a Pioneer Mother statue. I have never confused that statue for Jesus Christs mother.I guess I was expecting the Virgin Mary or a certain pop sensation from Detroit. That said, beautiful statue.

Obviously I am far too Catholic as I was excited to come here today and commune with the Madonna. First, I thought how sweet it was for there to be a representation of the Holy Mother as a pioneer. Then I wondered who the second child in the statue was. Finally, it dawned on me that there is a difference between a madonna and the Madonna.

I stop to spend a half-hour at the foot of the statue every time I travel the National Road from Pennsylvania to Vandalia, IL. (My 4th trip will be fall of 2014.) Richmond is one of my favorite small cities.

I have lived in Richmond my whole life and have never understood what this statute was until today and after reading about it it makes me sad to think of the people like me who dont know the story and history of this magnificent statute dedicated to the memory of the brave women of Americas past women who braved the harshest conditions imaginable I will from this day forth feel pride knowing this statute is apart of my city.
