This museum had a great set up with lots to learn. I really enjoyed it. If you are in Richmond, I would check it out. Also, remember to bring cash to leave a donation so they can keep adding on to these exhibits.

A good overview of the state. They should keep the exhibition of African-American history in the Commonwealth on permanent display. Still has some Confederate displays from their time as the Confederate Museum.

An interesting museum. If you are well traveled in Virginia, suddenly places you know will have new stories and history to them! During COVID, admission by ticket, only -- and on a Thursday, over 2 hours in the museum, we saw only one other visitor.

An excellent museum to explore all aspects of Virginias history, including the negative aspects of slavery (a whipping post can be found.) Its presented in a way that is informative and in touch with the many nuances/peculiarities of the civil war and the early encounter with native Americans. Dont overlook this place if visiting this area.

We’ve seen quite a few exhibits here including the recent vintage toys and the Downton Abbey exhibits. We’re members here and at the VMFA. Both are worthwhile memberships. The gift store has a lot of nice locally relevant books and maps of the area among other things. The static exhibits can easily take a few hours to get through. Lots of interactive things to keep kids entertained too.

I feel a little torn, I enjoyed the museum but I expect there to be more. A good exhibit on the lasting, personal impact of slavery and a walk through of Virginias history were the only things to see. They were both done well, but I was looking for more. Exhibits seem to skip forward a lot: i.e. Jamestown, Revolution, Civil War... With very little discussion about what happened in between. Its good, but I expected more -- most of the museums space seems to be given to an event hall and library.

I am very glad to visit this museum in Richmond. The exhibits were put together very well and believe me, its a lot to digest, especially The Story of Virginia. One of the temporary exhibits that was available (the last day will be the 21st) is Fresh Murals, which showcases paintings from local artists. All I can say they will start conversations on Virginias past and how far we can move toward the future. Pictures below will be from all the artists. Enjoy.

Everyone needs to visit this place and get educated. Anyone who visits this place and then still thinks anything about the Confederacy should be celebrated, glorified and honored is a kook. The Charlie Brown exhibit was awesome!

This is a great place to go and interact with some of the history of Virginia. Of course the history of Virginia is the history of America so you will learn a lot about our country and be able to interact with the exhibits and setups.

We had our wedding ceremony at the VMHC .Laura at the VMHC was incredibly communicative, and helpful. She was really professional, and worked to support our wedding ceremony every step of the way.Having our ceremony at the VMHC was a breeze. We booked the Halsey room, and it felt like the best blank slate for our florist, and designing our own ceremony. The VMHC set up chairs, and our bridal party quickly set up our flameless candles, and other small things. The getting ready rooms were perfect for my bridal party and I, with plenty of storage space, and a private hallway where guests wouldnt see us before the ceremony.

Its an ok small donation-based museum (probably 2 hours to see it all), but the biggest problem is how noisy the main exhibit (history of Virginia) is. Theres three or four very loud audio loops all blasting in one giant hall. Add on people talking loudly, and its like trying to read while in a packed bar with two different TV channels turned up high. I actually had earplugs on me but it was still difficult to focus on reading. Skip this museum and walk down to the museum of fine art instead.

The museum is a great visit for anyone. The exhibits were informative and there are a handful of sections within those exhibits that are immersive and interactive. I definitely reccomend this museum as it is right next door to the VMFA, which is also an amazing museum to visit as well.

Huge, beautifully kept museum that has a large, exquisitely presented collection of Virginia history inside. I dont know why we havent been here before, but were lucky and excited to have discovered this museum. Its large and beautiful inside, with interesting and interactive ways of presenting various periods of Virginia history. There are gas pumps, trolley cars, old wagons, guns, flags, military uniforms, statues, coins and medallions, and so much more! You can also find a research library and gift shop on site, plus more. The staff are wonderful. Cost is a suggested donation. We loved the love mural exhibit (running until April 2019), and everything else!

We visited the VMFA over my kids spring break vacation and we saw this museum next door as we left. I had never heard of it (was previously named the Virginia Historical Society, but was renamed in the beginning of 2018 -- smart move!), so went a couple days later when it was to go the next day to explore. Ive lived in Richmond for 12 years and am ashamed I didnt know about this museum sooner. Our visit was absolutely wonderful. So many interesting exhibits on the history and cultures of Virginia. One of our familys favorites was the old Richmond Trolley car. What a gem of a museum to have so close by! We had to cut our first visit short because of other engagements, but we are looking forward to our next visit! Thank you

Place is decent for a compact museum. It holds an incredible amount of treasures to be discovered by its visitors, child to retirees there is something for everyone. From the outside, you would assume to be lost in time inside but with a decent walk around and in-depth reading of items you can spend 5 hours and be educated about Virgina and a few other exhibits.

This so called history and culture museum has removed several historic memorial plaques from the entrance to the R. E. Lee Camp Veterans Memorial Hall and the Battle Abbey, the oldest part of the building. Visit only if you enjoy seeing Virginias history and culture demonized and erased by political correctness.

I maintain a membership despite living in New Jersey. My favorite aspect of membership is getting to use the research library when I visit. Getting to read personal accounts of historical figures during the civil war deepens my interest in the subject. My perspective of Civil War history has become much more personal after reading eyewitness accounts, IN THEIR OWN HANDWRITING! The displays in the museum are also wonderful. One can experience the uniqueness of Virginias history here, especially Richmonds.
