This museum had great insights into Richmonds, very rich, African American history. The hostess was very knowledgeable and passionate about the museum contents and stories. There is a temporary exhibit (through Oct 20, I think) that details the history and life of enslaved people at the Monticello plantation owned by Thomas Jefferson. The amount of research and work that went into the exhibit was evident and very much appreciated. Be sure to purchase tickets online to reserve your entry.

We visited from Maryland to learned about the Jackson Ward area. Our guided tour started at the museum. At the end of the tour we decided to browse the museum. I was pleasantly surprised. The space was laid out well with helpful timeline flow. The didnthave many artifacts but the interactive exhibits made up for it. The staff is knowledgeable and full of information. There were some wonderful items in the gift shop. I purchased some lovely handmade jewelry and a handbag created by local artists. I would highly recommend a visit. We will return. Do yourself a favor and book a walking tour with Mr. Gary Flowers.

The facility was clean and easy to access. They take safety very serious the moment you walk into the door including a temperature check. My family and I enjoyed the interactive exhibits and speaking with the staff.Faithe who greet you once you pass the COVID screening is a treasure chest of knowledge and history she explained details of the existence of the original armory,(which the building now occupies) and unknown details of history including her family line and other unsung heroes who helped shaped the Jackson Ward neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this as a must see place for visitors to the Richmond area!

Interesting exhibits. Whole top floor dedicated to Sally Hemmings/Thomas Jefferson story. My guess is that the top floor will always be used for the featured exhibit, which happened to o be about them. Would love to see more Richmond history. Interactive screens were a nice use of technology.

Really enjoyed touring the BHM. The facility is modern, spacious and well laid out. Having a volunteer guide walk us thru the museum, helping us to know whats available in each of the galleries was extremely helpful. Our guide was very good at prodding us w contextual questions. Like the paradox of TJefferson who wrote that all men were created equal yet built and sustained his farm at Monticello by maintaining 607 slaves. By comparison, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture currently has an exhibition: Determined: 400 Years of African American Struggle for Equality. This is excellent! I only wished BHM would have half of the content and vision of that temporary exhibit. VAs history is steeped in the injustice and struggle for African-Americans equality. I predict BHM would grow in prominence by better telling the black experience for emerging, waking generations if told from a VA perspective.

Not really educational. Its the same information you get out of your text books in school. Which is washed out. Need to teach the ppl something we dont know but need to learn. The people that were shown were the topical one you always hear about in the mainstream. I was very excited when I got there but disappointed an wanted more once I walked out.

This is definitely a great attraction to have in Richmond. Although one thing that I have always disliked is when we try to hide our history to appease an audience. If that makes sense I think there should be a much more detailed section about the transatlantic slave trade and the truth about what they actually went through. I dont think we should ever hide the torture or the abuse that our ancestors received and how far we have come from that time. I know they have only been open for two years so that may not be something that they could do but definitely hoping they add it in the future.

The Museum interior itself is very nicely done. The exhibits are good but just not enough of them for me. I was impressed with the technological interactive wall of history. I must say that the receptionist was very warm, patient and informative. Ive gone twice already. You can cover the whole Museum in I would say anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Enjoy! Proud of you Richmond.

This museum is small but mighty. There are so many amazing stories from black history that we did not learn in school, and many took place right here in Virginia. The permanent exhibit here is wonderful. Lots to learn from the large touchscreen in the hallway. Ive also seen some wonderful rotating exhibits come through on the second floor. If youve never been here, youll want to check it out.

We were so excited to visit the newly renovated museum, but was disappointed to find that the entire upper floor was closed the day we visited. We were still charged full admission and it wasnt until I asked about that we were offered a coupon for 1/2 off our next visit. (The only thing open was 1 large room)The large timeline exhibit is well done and interesting, but the remaining room of exhibits seemed a bit geared towards children and were not as interesting. A lot of the previous artifacts seemed to be missing and replaced with info about bike race and car drivers.Im hoping that the full museum is better, but honestly dont think Ill visit again to find out.

This is an amazing place. Virginia is a critical epicenter in American history, and that history is grossly incomplete without the history of African Americans. This museum, through its many interactive exhibits, displays, stories, and artwork helps remind us of how we as a country got to where we are today, why it so important to address persistent issues surrounding race and inequality, and how We The People build a better, supportive future together.

This place has a very modern cultural style that reflects how African Americans have changed the US. However, the cost is unacceptable when you only have two floors with not a lot of things to show. For a family of five, it can cost over thirty dollars. If you only offer two floors with not a lot of showroom it should be very inexpensive, if not free.

The museum is very comprehensive and very interactive. There are no human guides, and you use touch screens to access all the information.
