Great hike. A decent amount of foot traffic (one group of people every 5 minutes or so). The dog loved it. Not too difficult but difficult enough with a dog. There was usually enough room to pass at a safe distance (6 feet) if you time it correctly.
I think its the hardest hike in all of SD and its fun that it starts with the sweet hall of trees even though your in for a heck of a hike. Go early to beat the heat! Pets have been air lifted off this mountain so please know your pets ability and do not take your pet in the heat of the day on this hike.
Good place to hike or visit. Would have been great if there were public toilets.
Good walk. Make sure you go early to avoid the heat
Great hike, kind of step at some point. Way to many people, some dont have masks. Gets hot with no shades.
Good hike. Go on a weekday, early or mid day(when its hot) to aviod crowds. Bring water and hiking shoes.
Great hike for beginners! My first time at this mountain but I have hiked to other places in San Diego.I would compare in difficulty to Cowles but with better scenery.Dog and kid friendly.Went on a cloudy day so the views are not as great.
Hot sun may spoil your capacity to appreciate the spot as you struggle to reach. Start early, bring plenty of water. I brought 2L and was over midway on way back. So many people without masks. Stay out of them just like you stay out from rattlesnakes. Both are deadly!
The best time to arrive is between 4:30 & 5am. Enjoy the cool air, the sunrise and the hike up to the top. Best to go early and enjoy the peace and quiet. As the morning progresses the circus arrives.
I love this hike, its gets you moving. Not a hard one but dont underestimate it either.
Easy hike for novice hikers. Long flat areas and plenty of switch backs. The incline never gets to bad. Views from the trail and from the top are gorgeous. There is a nifty dial at the top that points out the neighboring mountains. Watch out for snakes on the trail.
Light rain on a Sunday after a hot September/October. Perfect!
Good place to hike. Just a reminder, this trail has so many rocks on the trails. Overall it is an awesome hike.
A medium level hike that will take around 2 hrs. Dont expect too much at the top except the views (fogs frequently) and the satisfaction of achievement. Some parts of trail very rocky so wear good shoes
Nice easy hike, amazing views, sunrise.
Night hike, sunset and full moon was awesome.
Great place for an early morning hike. I enjoy watching the sunrise.
I lived in San Diego for over 10 years and although I hiked all over and lived in RB at some point, I never hiked Iron Mountain. I thought it was a simple and with few views hike. Boy I was wrong!!! I went there just because some friends wanted to go; it is an excellent hike with great views of the valleys surrounding it. I highly recommend.
Great view, should check out and bring some snack and a lot water
Nice long workout with rewarding views! If going early in the morning, the hike is enjoyable and not difficult. I have also made the mistake of going in the middle of a hot day... I felt like I was going to die.
A great healthy trail to hike early as six in the morning
The best place to go hiking
I love this hike. Good parking, but a bit small so get there early. The trail is easy to follow and well maintained. There are a few spots with lose and sharp rocks, so hiking shoes are recommended. Once at the peak you are treated to a beautiful panoramic view stretching to the Pacific Ocean and around the entire county.
First time I have hiked here even though I grew up right down the street. For being my first hike I thought half way through I would die lol.. but it was nicely paced with hills and flat trails! I made it, I wasnt exhausted and I felt great after.
A moderate hike and absolutely beautiful out there
Was a great day for a Hike and best part was with my teenage son.. who needs usually comes and it was his idea.. love it he kicked my but.. but mom still got this @44 years old
Good view, not too hard of a hike to get up there.
Fantastic hike!! If you havent done it, youve got to!!! I suggest going early in the morning, less traffic, more fresh air, and its not hot yet! Take lots of water :)
This is by far my favorite hiking spot in San Diego. Ive been here several times, early morning and night hikes, but mostly I love the late afternoon/evening.Beautiful views and foliage all around. The trail is well trafficked even on weekdays, but everyone is always friendly, the trails are well-maintained.If you decide to go later in the day, I recommend a flashlight and a light jacket, it can get chilly.A good get away from concrete and city life.
Great early morning hike.
Nice hike with great vista at the top. Fairly aggressive with no shade, so bring water and sun screen
For an asthmatic, it was challenging at times with the incline, but great views from the top and really put my heart to work! Definitely go early...the heat is intense around 10am!
!Beautiful, there were flowers blooming everywhere
My goto hiking trail! Easy to find, decent parking, and latrines at Start/Stop. Hike is not extremely difficult and considered a medium level experience required. Git-R-Done!Dos: Hydrate/Nutrition, bring plenty of water and a few protein/Carb bars, or a banana or two...Dont: Please do not litter, and pick up after pets. Leaving waste for return trip is an eyesore to others...Dont be that guy/gal!Finally, I prefer the early bird STARTEX, quiet, cool, and few folks..(the regulars).Today, although dragging a bit in my old age, was inspired to see a young female amputee with Blade assist running by me...Inspiration for everyone! Have fun all.
I really enjoyed this hike. I went early to beat the crowd and there was only a couple people at the top with me.There is a good amount of parking, but I would make sure to get there early because it appeared to fill up really fast. When you start the hike you will be on a groomed dirt road/ish for about the first mile. After that you will be at the base of the climb and be taking the switchbacks all the way to the top.I really enjoyed the surrounding views. Make sure you bring lots of water on warmer days, there is not shade
Great terrain, fabulous wild flowers, beautiful weather and epic views! It was worth every step!
Beautiful hike. Great views 365.
One of the best hikes in SD area.On a clear day you can see forever.7 and 10 year old were able to make the summit. This despite the heat that day and their limited athleticism. No water on the trail so pack your own. Picnic tables at the top so being a lunch/snack.Love this hike. It was cloudy the day these photos were taken. Imagine what a clear day would be like!
One of my favorite hikes in San Diego county. Moderate with a bit of rocky terrain. If you take the most popular trail to the summit and back its about 5 miles. If you go early enough, the first half of your hike will be mostly shaded. Dogs are welcome and are supposed to be leashed, but plenty of people do off leash hiking there too.
Nice, relatively easy 6 mile hike (rt) with beautiful views of Poway and even downtown San Diego. No shade so go early if its hot. Took us about 2 hours moving at a fairly brisk pace.
I always love this hike when I need to unplug and get away.
Bring water there is no shade!
Great 5-mile hike. Go early to beat the heat and the crowd.
I WAS THERE FRIDAY EXCELLENT 7 10 20
One of my favorite places to hike
Moderate hike. Expect 2 hours return trip.
Really fun hike. Wife and I did this in 2 and a half hours, up and back. Can get slippery particularly towards the peak. Watch your step with all the rocks and you will have fun.
It was a decent difficulty hike, but the view is sooo worth
This place is truly spiritual.
Fantastic view, looking west, of San Diego, Pt Loma, and beyond. 3mile 1hr hike was relatively easy
One of the best hikes in San Diego. Medium difficulty suitable for a lot of people. One of the few trails thats open 24 hours in the county. Awesome for sun rise/set hikes.
Great place to hike and close to San Diego. A little bit crowdedbut everyone is very friendly, easy going and polite. Beautiful views at the top and well worth a very moderate hike.
Go early before it gets too hot! Lots of people on a weekend.
Good easy hike. Clean trail pretty decently maintained. Take water! Take water! Take water! Nice views. Quick loop or out n back with miles of other trails to hit if you have time. Be courteous and take out what you bring in. Better yet pick up at least one piece of trash on your way down! #hikenaked #lovelast
Moderate difficulty hike, lots of stepping on or over rocks. Awesome views. Glad we did it on a cooler day with a breeze! Excellent workout.
~6 Miles to peak from parking lot. First mile is relatively flat than becomes series of rocky switch backs. Trail is well maintained with some built in steps and some water shed control to prevent washouts. Beautiful 360 degree panoramic views from peak. There is a (free) telescope and few picnic tables at top. Took about 1:15 up with my 8 year old and wife. Could probably do it in about an hour if you pushed it or jogged a bit.
Good place for a short hiking and backpacking.
Nice hike with steady grade and switchbacks. Great views of the area. Saw lizards and rattlesnakes.
Pretty easy climb. Beautiful views, colorful rocks, fresh air.
Had a great hike, not to hard, not easy. Wore the altitude mask and zipped up. Finished in less than two hours.
Great view on the top but people who brought their dogs Please pick it up, dont just leave the plastic on the side.
One of the hardest trails weve done but it was sooo worth it! Gorgeous views from the top!
Sunrise on the 4th of july on Iron mt
What a beautiful hike, tons of views and a nice uphill rocky climb. Moderately challenging, got the heart rate up but not to where we had to stop to catch breath. We got up and down under 2.5 hours and were moving pretty fast. Great 360 view at the top!
One of my favorite hike!!! You make it as challenging as you want! Night hikes can feel a lonely if your not night hiking with someone.
Took me about 2 hours including a 20 min rest at the top. Not too vigorous, my dog also had no problem.
Exelent Hiking
Really great trail to hike in San diego
Great hike and beautiful view. Took my 9, 10 and 13 year old kids and while there were a couple of moments complaints we all had a good time
Always Beautiful!
Good hike, great views about 6 miles round trip.
Iron mountain is always a great trail to hike. Ive done it many times. My favorite times are very early mornings or afternoons to watch sunset.
What a beautiful day for a hike.
This is one of my local favorite hike
Beautiful moderate hike, with beautiful vista views. But very crowded
Great easy hike! This is still a hike and not a nature walk so bring enough water and supplies.
Nice hike with great views. Dog friendly. Avoid going there during hot summer days because there is not much shade.
You can see all of San Diego from the top!
Best 6 mile hike around town
Great place for hiking and a wonderful view
Nice views to all sides
Beautiful views, not too difficult.
Beautiful hike as always. Saw my first rattle snake of the season up top ..so be on the lookout!
Nice hike and some great views. Unfortunately a little trashy up top which is a little disheartening. Next time however I will bring a garbage bag to pick up after the knuckle heads.
Easy hike with great views
Great hike on a sunny and warm winter day. I went at 2pm and there was plenty to of parking because people were leaving. Enough of an elevation gain to make it a good workout but not too tough. Some rocky spots, I was glad for my hiking pole but it wasnt a must. Bathrooms at the entrance only - byo toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
Beautiful and not too challenging hike in Poway.
It is long hike but not too strenuous. And on a clear day it is so beautiful and you can even see Catalina Island.
Breath taking views of the Pacific ocean... Bernardo mountain, Black mountain, the mount Hudson (potato chip) the San Diego downtown and many more.
I had blast this was my first time doing it, just make sure ya up yo it it is moderately challenging, bring lots of water and sun glasses and a hat, went with a friend and were talking smack the whole way up, we then ran most the way down, will be doing it again soon
Great hike, this photo was on the bench at the top of the hike.
Great view, fun jog to the top
Great hike, well traveled bordering on crowded. Amazing views at summit. Approx 5.25 mi r/t with 1000 ft vertical. Takes about 2 hours at good pace.
Good Trail for work out or to enjoy with the family, 5 miles round trip.
Great trail, excellent view. Went during the night and had a very nice experience.
3 mile hike to the top with fun shortcuts that they tell you not to take but when has erosion ever caused a problem. The hike along the normal path is pretty fun with 70 yr old man being able to do it so not to hard unless you have no legs.
This hike was amazing and not too difficult it was prefect
Easy trail for adults and kids, nice views.
