This location has a variety of different trails. Near the road where you park, there is a large open trail that leads to smaller trails in the woods as well as a shelter you could eat at. Additionally, there is a paved trail that walks adjacent to the asphalt road and meets up with a wooded trail further down. Very scenic and full of wildlife, as well as informational with the signs from NCSU about the area.
It would be fabulous if they wouldnt have taken away the parking from us fisherman. I mean you buy a fishing license and year after year they take another pond away from us. I guess bicyclist has more power. I should have given 1 star!
Great path, but also runs into another trail so pay attention!
Beautiful and well maintained forest just outside of Umstead Park.Much fewer people compared to Umstead or Eno and the Forest is in great shape as it’s essentially and laboratory for forestry students at NC State. The trails are short and make for a nice 30-75 minute hike.Dirt road to enter and may be muddy after some rain.
A pristine slice of tranquility.
Great place to get away and find a good tree to set up a hammock
Beautiful hiking through the cedar forest. Make sure to keep track of how you came in as the paths arent marked.
If youYou stay on the dirt road it will take you along areas that show how the area is being used to teach forestry to students. Quite a bit of interstate traffic noise in this part. If instead you take the dirt road to the picnic area and follow the trailhead behind the picnic area you will go into the midst of the forest down to a small stream. It is very beautiful and the trails are soft and covered with pine needles. It is very shady. There is less traffic noise in that area. Will be back.
Beautiful trails, alot of trees down probably some major going on.
Great place to hike
Very nice outdoor space and hiking area.
Beautiful place to walk around and enjoy nature. Trails are not very well marked so make sure you have your GPS/Phone with you.
Fantastic place to go if you want to spend time hiking around. I go out there often with my classes at NCSU.You can yell in the forest and its so dense that no one will hear you, but do be respectful of wildlife. There are pine orchards that were planted in the 80s that are fun to find. Try identifying all of the different trees, you will have a blast!
The trails are quiet and neat for hiking. There arent too many steep hills, so its a fun, gentle stroll. The signs along the trail are informative and answer a lot of the I wonder why thats like that questions that pop up during trail adventures. Im sure it will be more treacherous when the weather warms, but for now there arent any bugs buzzing around or much undergrowth filling in forest gaps.
Great for a quick nature get-away and walk in the woods. Parking is awkward though. Nice sign out front on Reedy Creek, well placed!
Favorite place to walk and find a tree to chill, picnic, read, play in creek. This place makes for a lovely walk in the woods. Theres both gravel and pinestraw paths. Covered picnic tables and a portajohn on site. Safe for kids but no playground. No dogs allowed. Bring a camera, picnic snacks, and the family. And a comfortable pair of shoes. A nice place to go and relax.
No dogs are allowed here. Protected forest of NC State, agriculture, forestry and botany project, educational unit, wildlife conservation area. Quiet hiking trails and agricultural service road (pebbles). Great birdwatching place. Connects to Umstead park through greenway.
We love it here. Its a beautiful gentle walk. If youre lucky the horses will be nearby too.
You will feel like you are in a different world despite being a quarter mile from an interstate.
One of my favorite green spaces in Raleigh!!
Very piecful
Beautiful place. The trails are not well marked
Great urban Forrest. I havent been there for years though. Last time it was over run by dog owners, ignoring leash laws, letting their dogs run free. This traumatized my young child, leading to a life long phobia. We couldnt own a dog because of this.
Great educational forest with lots of trails and picnic areas. Dont bring your dogs here - you will be trespassed from the property if caught.
The NVSU High Ropes Course was pretty good. The only down side was there were too any participants. I would do it again.
A very nice place to relax n clear ur mind its quiet with resources around u as well State n government buildings
Very huge pond park basketball lots to do
It is a paceful place to visit and walk amounght the beautiful trees.
A great experimental forest.
This used to be a great place (actually the ONLY place in Raleigh) to bring your dogs and go on a hike. For the people (mostly joggers) that complained, there were (and are) dozens of other hiking and jogging places around where dogs arent allowed (or must be on a short leash). This WAS the ONLY place to bring your dogs -- it was KNOWN to be the dog place (i.e., dont go there if you dont like to see and play with lots of dogs) where one could bring your dogs to burn off energy and play in a large environment. Sadly, non-dog-lovers maybe didnt understand this, or maybe they are whiny, loud, cranky people who complain and get their way, despite having TONS of other jogging and hiking options in the immediate area. This was a dog and dog-owners paradise - the ONE place where everyone knew you could bring your dog and they could get *real* exercise and run and play with other dogs. Sure, jogging in an environment where dogs are chasing you off leash must have been miserable, but Umstead (much larger, better trails, etc) is right down the road, and Lake Johnson trails, and Lake Crabtree trails, and Durant Nature preserve for N Raleigh, etc... I wish there was ONE place for dogs to actually be able to play. Years ago (pre 2005?), Schenck Forest WAS it. Wish dogs could come back and have a such a great wooded place to run & play.
This place makes for a lovely walk in the woods. Theres both gravel and pinestraw paths. Covered picnic tables and a portajohn on site. Safe for kids but no playground. I think its no pets
Favorite place to walk and find a tree to chill.picnic.read.play in creek.say hi to horses.if up for long hike can treck to umstead.not crowded .no bike.or horses or dogs on trails.forestry area...
Never been here, dont know why it wants me to review, Im sure its decent though. 5/7 would recommend to friends
Great park for running and hiking.
Great place to visit and to unwind
I loved it here, exquisitely beautiful forestry preservation site/walking only trail (no pets either) by NCSU students. The swirling paths keep you guessing/exploring! Theres horses, a pretty old cemetery, and theres lots of info posted about the land and forestry techniques, ages and types of trees. Cool!
Wonderful, free, paths and trails located right outside doentown Raleigh. Good hours and nice views of nearby farms complete with horses and cows.
Lovely area, though it appears that a number of the trail connections on the northern side of the parcel have been washed out. This is a good place to see a managed research forest, it has a number of signs and annotations, pointing out stands of interest.About a decade ago, this forest was very popular with dog-walkers, but has since prohibited access to any dogs.
Very lovely!
The trails are not maintained as well as some others in the area. Trail markers are sometimes hard to follow as well. Great if you are up for an adventure and dont mind back tracking a few times to find your way through the forest. Also fairly isolated compared to other trails in the area. It does connect to the PNC arena as well as Umstead park.
Very peaceful!
No idea where this is but Google wont stop telling me that Ive been here. So I guess its okay.
Very beautiful & quiet place to go to
Fun place to go hiking.
I hydroplaned myself right into the park. Absolutely lovely visit!
Great trails!
Good trails for family strolls. Signage needs repairs.
A good birding spot in forest and surrounding fields.
Went to this place and was expecting it to be nice based on the reviews it has on here. It didnt seem very well kept. Trails look like they never get used and were super narrow/overgrown. As previously mentioned the road leading up to it is in terrible condition which wasnt a big deal. Overall, youre so close to Umstead at this point youre much better off going there instead.
Awesome forest. In response to Randolph, the forest is run by the NCSU Forestry Department for the purpose of teaching forestry majors proper forestry management techniques which includes cutting down trees for commercial purposes. Sales from the forest also substantially help the college in lean times avoid laying off professors or cutting funding to programs.
Had my nephews graduation picnic there bread from his bakery and assorted cold cuts played boccie ball and relished the day. Seth your the best I love you you brought us to a hidden jem.
A nice place for a walk in nature, but absolutely no dogs allowed.
Like this place. Fun to mess around in the woods. Most of the time you have it pretty much to yourself.
No dogs allowed at all
Great place for a Sunday afternoon hike.
While its no Appalachian hike like in western NC, this place does get pretty quiet pretty fast and is a great quick escape from the city.
Beautiful escape from the urban sprawl.
Nice walking roads and trails. Decent birding.
One of my favorite places. Not so large (245 acres) that your in danger of losing yourself, but plenty of trails and interesting sights. Pretty awesome for Raleigh that a real working forestry education facility is within minutes of the hustle and bustle of city life. The monumental Tree dedicated to the father of forestry, Carl A. Schenck, is worth a trip by itself. You cant miss this behemouth as he takes up considerable land under his canopy. This white oak is easily the largest Ive ever seen and reminds me of something normally seen on the west coast. Only negative is no dogs or bikes allowed, but the forest happens to be located directly beside 6,000+ acre Umstead park where you are welcome to hike, bike, bring a dog or whatever. Schenck Forest is a teaching forest and has a lot to offer anyone seeking forestry info, or simple tranquility.
Great place to birdwatch, hike or jog. Unfortunately, a big chunk of the pasture facing Edwards mill road is being lost to development
One of the hidden gems in Raleigh. I like to enter from the path off the greenway near Carter Finley (park in The Wade and walk to Reedy Creek through the park.
Love this place. The only downside is that its no dogs allowed.
Nice hiking trails, but dogs are prohibited.
Nice place for a hike on lunch hour.
My favorite hiking spot in the Triangle. Always quiet.
A great place for trail running
Great for hikes, team building, relaxing
Nice placr
Great hiking trails close to city
Why farther is red oll
Loved it
Clean and friendly staff
Okay
Travel Traveling thru
Loved it
Nice
Kind of raw and isolated but the trails are still obvious.
Nice hiking area for beginners
Nice area, draconian restrictions on use though.
Good
Beautiful location
Off the beaten path
Peaceful nature trail.
No dogs allowed but still a beautiful area to walk/hike
