Nice layout although a bit short. Greens and fairways in great shape. Staff very nice. Great place for 18. At this price point best place I have found in area.
They have a great staff-always friendly and ready to help. When the have tournaments, they are well organized and fun. The Raleigh Fun Golfers group is a great value and a lot of fun. The course has good variety, and is designed for a nice challenge, but not to beat you up. Also, it is pretty close to central Raleigh. I will admit I dont like the 540 road noise, but hey, just ignore it.
Staff is friendly. The course is almost always in great shape (compared to other courses in its price range). The course has a nice mix of hazards (sand traps and water), but isnt too challenging. It tends to get pretty crowded most days and sometimes there are large groups, so play can get pretty slow at peak hours.. The range is small but adequate, and a large bucket of balls is only $10 so its a good deal.
I had very low expectations of this place after hearing some bad things about it from friends, but decided to give it a try anyways and was pleasantly surprised. Apparently the owners have given the course to their sons and it looks like they are putting a lot of money into the course to bring it up to par with other courses around. Fun layout, fast greens, not overly difficult. The course is a little short but I was still able to use my driver on most holes. Only complaint is our pace of play was very bad, but we also had a group of 16 ladies in front of us so I cant really fault the course for that.
Course is in great condition. Play was at a very good pace. Highly recommend if you havent been there in a while.
Very enjoyable day of golf. The Pro Shop staff was helpful & friendly. The Starter deserves a bonus. He explained the course layout and then had us wait until the group in front of us had walked off the first green. That eliminated the bottleneck on the second hole, a Par 3 hole, and also set proper distancing for the entire round. We played 18 holes in 3+31 and it was quite enjoyable.Great pace of play. The course is in very good condition with fairways, tee boxes and bunkers all in good shape. The course had been aerated a week before we played and so the greens were healing and a little slow. They did roll true and with another week and a mowing, should be outstanding. This is a good value and a challenging test. With normal green conditions, Wil-Mar gets 5 stars !
There are signs up saying masks are required. But no one wears them in the building. The staff also dont wear them in the restaurant. Dont come here until after the pandemic is over. No umbrellas work on the patio. Maybe come for the golf, but pay online & dont go to the club. I wont be back.
Great course and staff. Had an amazing time here for my first visit.
Very friendly staff. Course is in very good shape. Good challenge.
Worst corse around Raleigh. I remember a few years ago paying $12 for 18 and the only reason you’d do it was because it was so cheap. I figured that all these years later they would have enhanced the course to justify $34 rounds but I was wrong. Sandy, aerated greens, grassy sand traps. Take my advice and pass this one up.
Was just there for driving range, but good experience!
Played here yesterday and I was very impressed with the condition of the golf course overall, especially the greens. Ive played at many other local golf courses, and this seems to be one of the best values around. Course condition, pricing, and friendly staff make this course I cant wait to come back to!
Fairways and greens in excellent condition. Played a much more expensive course last week and Wilmar is in better shape.
Well run and maintained. Challenging and interesting course. First round was a bit rough on me and I still had a great time.
Nice course with elevation changes and it is in very good shape.
The Golf course is in Excellent shape!
Played on Saturday morning 4/6/19. We had 9:52 tee time and morning tee sheet was full. Due to rain on Friday carts were on the path the whole way around WE PLAYED 18 HOLES IN 4 HOURS. Amazing pace of play on public course on weekend. Good Greens. Nice staff.
First time playing the course today, and the fairways and greens are in great condition! Best condition of any I’ve played in the area. Great value too!
Played a round on Sunday at 10am. The course is in good shape and the greens are nice if a bit slow. Pace was fine especially for a Sunday morning. Unfortunately on the 16th hole the sprinklers came on the green while we were on it and got us wet as well as our carts and bags. Especially considering that it was smelly reclaimed water it was gross having that sprayed on you. I called up to the clubhouse to let them know and the man who answered the phone said he would call the superintendent. After 20 mins we sprint and grab our balls from the green only to find the same situation on the 17th. I call back and am told, the super isnt answering his phone but I left him a voicemail. I dont know what to tell ya, they should go off soon. After another 10ish mins they did go off and we were able to hit our tee shots onto the green holding standing water(see attached picture). Completely ruined the round and killed what was a great day of golfing. After the round I went inside to explain the situation and employee who I had talked on the phone just stared at me and said he could give me a raincheck for the two holes after us and our gear getting sprayed with smelly reclaimed water. Very poor customer service especially when paying a premium price for a 10am Sunday tee time. They have lost my business, my foursomes, and anybody else who is asking me for course recommendations. On the flip side Bogeys grill is fantastic and has the best chicken salad sandwich of any course around, cannot recommend Tommys food and drinks more. They are great.
I walked up as a single without a tee time. GolfNow showed a lot of 1s and 2s available, so I figured it would be easy to hop on with another group (as I do often). The guys in the clubhouse were accommodating and one even ran out to tell the starter I was good to go.The starter was immediately and obviously irritated and said You cant do that. Ugh, you know theres a bunch of threesomes and foursomes out there, he said condescendingly. Yes, I replied. I was hoping to just hop on with a pair or threesome. There were a threesome and a pair waiting to tee off. He basically told me to ask them if it was okay (in a tone which assumed the group would be unhappy about it, which is almost never the case). I asked, they were welcoming (of course). That interaction explained why the pace was SO SLOW - the starter doesnt like to accommodate singles or pair separate pairs together in order to keep pace steady.Aside from that, they were using temporary greens due to stripping and reseeding the actual greens. No biggie, course maintenance is super important in the long run. The tee boxes were atrocious though. Some were barren, and another had the blue tee markers right on a bowl in the ground. The fairways were in great shape! The track is pretty nice - some elevation changes and opportunities to score on par-5s on the front nine. Nothing to write home about, but definitely not boring. I didnt play the back nine due to the pace just sucking the fun out of the already mildly (but understandably) inconvenienced round with temporary greens.I probably wont go back, if only because it was an underwhelming experience, and there are a number of better/comparable courses inside my 40-minute radius that I play within. It was okay. Not good. Not bad.
Course in great shape
I have played this course at least 30 times over the past 2 years. I can honestly say at this point this course is in the best shape out of all courses I have played in the area with the exception of Heritage. Fairways are like outdoor rugs and the greens at times are almost perfect. Played there in the rain a few times as well and the course held up nicely. I had to be critical I wish they would cut the greens just a tad shorter. The owners are very nice and staff for the most part is also very friendly. Priced pretty well. membership could be a few hundred dollars less but still not bad. $300 initiation, $1000 plus cart fees which I think are $15.. Course is built to score, not very long and for the most part not horribly challenging. Back 9 is definitely more challenging and much longer. If you live fairly close and you are looking for a course to join you may want to consider Wilmar, you wont be disappointed.
Friendly staff, great food at the club house, good value for the price.
I recently brought my daughter to play on the new greens, They are super nice and the fairways are in great condition. The staff are always friendly and helpful. After practicing or playing we sometimes stop in at Bogeys Bistro at the course for lunch or a snack and relax and hang out. We always look forward to playing and practicing at Wil-Mar Golf Course.
A fun course to play and in real decent condition. Greens need a bit of work. Not a long course but has some challenging holes. I enjoy playing nine holes after work and it only costs $12 to walk with the senior or veteran discount. Call before you go though as it has been closed to public play a couple times for private or league play.
What a pleasure to play on this course. I have found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating. The course itself, is in really great condition from tee to green. The greens roll true and are fast. And not a bad lie on the fairway. It shows that they have taken great care of this course for the enjoyment of all.
Seeing some bad reviews in here, but my experience was great. The greens were fine and the course seemed well kept. All of the staff were very friendly and the price is hard to beat. There is an awesome student discount as well. I would definitely suggest this course to anyone.
Quality vs price is great
Course conditions are much improved from a few weeks back. Lots of new turf has been laid and the Bermuda grass is really growing . You can tell they have been working really hard to get things back in shape. Also one of the better driving ranges in the area. Range balls are reasonably priced and staff is as friendly as anywhere I have been. Family run businesses always have the best customer service. Full service grill has a fantastic hamburger and maybe the best chicken salad I have had. In my opinion its the best golf value in the area, especially now that the conditions have improved from the terrible winter. Great online rates available on their website too!
The Course is in great shape; the people that run the place and work there are all very nice. The Restaurant and Little bar there is really good and the food is most excellent!Greeters are very reasonable, even on the weekends!
Played the new greens today. They are beautiful. The whole course is fantastic!
Course in decent shape. The starter was terrible. I asked if I could play the back 9 so I didnt have to wait. He acted like it was the biggest inconvenience for him. Then I told him I wanted to play by myself. He looked at me like it was the dumbest thing hes heard. Ive never met a nice starter here. They are all cranky old guys.
Course is fun, a little pricey for what you get though. It is in terrible shape. The grass (if you can call it that), is brown and dead. Tee boxes are a disaster and the greens are either half dead or dying. Fix the course and itll be my number one choice in the RDU area again.EDIT - The course has grown in quite nicely since my last review. We played today and the pace of play was excellent (finished 18 in 3 hours). The greens and tee-boxes have grown in very well and the layout is always a blast. Thanks for the great round.
Ive played the course 4 times. 3 in the winter season and once since the weather has started to change. didnt have any complaints. staff was great. I even played in there SuperBowl Gameday event.looking forward to greener grass
My favorite golf club. Greens were perfect and slow today. I played ok since its been a year since I swung a club. Hotdogs between the nine holes are delicious.
Played here for the first time and it will definitely be the last. $41 for VERY poor course conditions, the starter was rude, and the marshal was snarky towards my playing group for things like parking our cart slightly off the cart path. Just didnt feel welcomed by the staff and the pricing is absurd for the course conditions. The only thing that was positive was the pace of play.
Wil-Mar is one of the top 3 worst golf courses in the Raleigh, NC area. I have played there at least five times and it gets worse each time. The only reason I went back is because it was the only option on that particular day. I would never suggest this course to anyone as the greens are always in terrible condition and there is no marshal keeping pace of play at a moderate pace. There are many better options if you are willing to drive another 15 minutes outside of Raleigh.
Took an hour and 15 minutes to play 3 holes on the back nine. At one point there where four groups backed up on one hole. Went to the clubhouse for a partial rain check and was told we couldnt get one because we used the golf now app. Terrible booking and management of tee times or letting slow groups stay in front of others. Wouldnt recommend if youre trying to play 18 in a reasonable amount of time.
Yelling and Disrespect! I am a Raleigh native and went to WilMar once 25 years ago and was treated very rudely; never returned. I decided to try again thinking time had removed the former negative element I experienced; I was wrong. From the moment I checked into until I finished I was treated EXTREMELY rude by the staff. The starting ranger yelled at me about hurrying up even though it was 20 minutes till tee off and I was at the First Tee. On the 13th hole the most absurd encounter happened. While standing on the tee waiting for the group ahead to clear, 200 yards ahead, the ranger approached my group. Mind you, we are standing on the tee with clubs in hand. The ranger stated, You guys need to pick up your speed of play. I have no words to describe the lunacy at this course. I will never return. This is not an embellished story at all. It really did happen. Save your money and go somewhere else.
Payed on Golf Now. The pace on front nine wasnt to bad. As soon as the turn was made huge pile up, so much so the single that joined our twosome left we decided to try and keep playing. Huge mistake it took us an hour and 15 mins to play 3 holes at that pace it wouldve taken 3 hours to play 9 holes time we didnt have. We went into the proshop asking for a partial rain check or something and were told since we used gold now the course didnt get any money from it so we needed to contact golf now... Now Im not the smartest person on the face of the planet but if the golf course gets no money from the app company while the hell would they even use it. I fell like whoever owns this course should step up here a little.
Ill give the second star just because it is December and Ill give benefit of the doubt that somewhere under everything, there is potential. Restroom was disgusting; starter needed to get over himself; the greens were fuzzy, dead in some areas, and literally looked like a checkerboard on one because of really poor sodding that went different directions; the tee boxes were dead; the marshal didnt do anything on the back 9 even though we were stacked up; and it was 4.5 hours. Its cheap on GolfNow but the club is very open about how they dont seem to like those so how this averaged 4 stars is beyond me.
While visiting Raleigh, we where looking for some places to play while on vacation. We where told about Wil-Mar and gave it a go. We enjoyed it so much we played it again the following day. Thank you Wil-Mar. Also.. Make sure you enjoy the eats they have on hand..
Short course which is good for beginners. Some challenging holes but the majority are fairly straightforward.
Very friendly staff and the course is in great condition. I have been a member for thirty years.
I come to Raleigh every year but usually travel on to Pinehurst. This spring I took my 13 year old daughter on her first golf trip. Not only was it her first golf trip it was her first round of golf on a championship length course. As a 25 year PGA golf professional and a newly minted LPGA member I chose this course because it was close to town and had a recommendation that stated it would appeal to players of all abilities.Perfect! We were very well received by a very friendly staff and their head pro Fran. We enjoyed our warm up on the driving range which offered a nice large teeing ground, large putting/chipping green, and a pitching area. Everything you need to get ready to play. The course layout was both interesting and fun to play. Doglegs, elevation change (not too much to wear you out on foot), water features and of course the Carolina pines. Its not extremely long by I hit gorilla 300+ drives but 5700 yards for the club tees was enough for me to have a fun day. My daughter was brave and wanted to play the big girl tees so she stayed with me.If your thinking of playing Wil-Mar...get out and do it! You will have a great time at this fun course.
Drive all the way from north durham, love the course and all the folks that make it a great golf course, fran, robbie, doug and specialy miss vickie and her bacon, egg & cheese.
Convenient new houses around in case you hit an errant golf shot friendly people
Greens needs a lot of work. Management is strict to minors and wants you to move fast in the course..
For the price, not bad. Way too overcrowded though
Best little course in Raleigh
