Hiking Y Mountain to the Y is a must do activity if you are a true BYU fan. It is a short hike with a lot of switch backs. The trail is nice and well taken care of with several benches to sit on all the way up.

I climbed to the top of the mountain, which is at least 2 miles past the Y. The hike to the Y is pleasant the fist time, but once you go again it loses its magic. Thats why I enjoy the full (6ish mile) hike to the summit and back. Simply continue hiking from the top of the Y to the right, and the trail continues gaining elevation though it is not nearly as steep as the switchback section. Eventually youll be hiking through a canyon and after over 1 mile a trail splits off to the left. This leads up to the summit. Eventually you reach a saddle between two peaks. The peak on your right is the true peak, and there is no official trail heading up to it. The official trail heads to the summit on the left but it is not the high point. Its a beautiful forest hike and after the Y theres practically no crowds. I like doing it at night and seeing all the lights in the valley.

Great hike, really well kept. The only complaint I would have is there is absolutely no shade on this hike.

The hike is moderate to hard. The trail is very steep and although it clocks in at only a mile and a half each way it is very steep and grueling. We hiked fairly slow and we finished hiking to the top of the Y in just under a hour. The trail leads up to the top of Y mountain and into slate canyon.

This hike is not as difficult as many locals will claim it is. There are much more difficult hikes throughout the state of Utah. The switchbacks on the Y Hike make it easy, it is a great hike though with a fantastic view of Utah County.

Its a great hike, I personally think if you can make it to the Y you can make it to the peak because thats the hardest and hottest part of the trail. It continues on and has some less steep areas. The view is well worth it though. At the fork in the mountains about 2 miles in take the left. Theres a tree thats marked and has a Y and an arrow. Sprint has LTE at the top incase losing cell service worries you.

Be prepared for a steep hike and a huge change in elevation. Its only about .95 to the bottom of the Y! Its a great hike to see the whole of Utah valley! The signs are funny and encourage you along the way- Great start, Keep Going, Your almost thereSummer: It can get very very hot so make sure to be covered, wear sunscreen, and bring water!Winter: The snow and ice can be very slippery so make sure to bring proper shoes and spikes! Normal hiking boots will not cute it in the weather.Spring: The melting snow and rain can lead to muddy and slippery surfaces so make sure to be careful!

Hiked to the Y with my 6 little ones (ages 15 months to 11 years old) and it was a blast!! Its a fun hike...it is steep in parts but there are people of all ages and fitness levels doing it. There are motivational and educational signs at every bend. You can hike to the bottom, middle, or top of the Y. 10 signs to the bottom. There are benches along the way and again when you reach your destination. There are binoculars near the bottom of the Y that you can use to overlook the beautiful valley. The middle of the Y has picnic tables if you want to pack a lunch. This is a hike my kids love and always ask to do. We just take water and snacks, the hike itself takes us about an hour round trip, but we usually spend about 30 minutes or more on top enjoying the view and some snacks.

This is a pretty beastly hike for the novice. My Apple Watch said that I had climbed 82 flights of stairs when I finished. It has 9 switchbacks from the base to the bottom of the Y but it’s almost a 1000 foot ascension so be ready for taking breaks at the switchbacks if you don’t do this all the time. Especially if you are not from the higher elevation areas. Great place to train for high elevation marathons and races I guess! Maybe take a snack because at the top you may want it while you enjoy the amazing view of Utah Valley. There is a good amount of wildlife as well. I saw two bluebirds that looked pregnant (or maybe there are a lot of worms in the area). You definitely feel accomplished when you do this hike!

Hiking to the Y is fun and worth it, its a bit of a steep climb but when you get to the top you can relax and sight see up there. Its cool to see the white washed or painted area. The trail has many back and forth and is a easier trail to hike.

I am writing for those with physical disabilities as I have one. This was an extreme challenge for me. I am comfortable hiking in places like Rock Canyon or Provo Canyon where the terrain is less steep. The hike to the Y was very hard. It was steeper than hikes like Rock Canyon and was very difficult for me. There was a lot of loose rock that was a bit treacherous at times. Going down is very hard on the knees. I would have felt more comfortable with fences next to the drops in the trail. However, the trail was well kept and there was a lot of packed dirt that made walking easier. They had rest areas at each turn, though not benches at each one. The benches were at just about every other one. The turn points got closer together the higher they got, helping to make the hike seem less intense. The view was crazy awesome too, and it was definitely something to check off the bucket list. If you have a disability, make sure that you are prepared for a difficult trek and take plenty of rests whenever you can and believe in yourself!

Wow! Harder than I expected. Going up, the elevation change is fast, and I had to rest every tenth mile or so. Theres benches and rocks along the way to sit if you want. The trail is wide and definitely family and pet friendly. The view of Provo from the top is very nice, and walking around the giant Y is fun. Going down is much faster and easier, and I saw some people jogging it which is definitely an option for everyone as its all downhill.Theres a short trail along the bottom of the Y trail thats much flatter and can sustain mountain bikes. If you add the Y trail with this other trail, you can definitely do 3 miles roundtrip.

Absolutely loved the hike. We took an umbrella that was the best idea ever. It made the very little shade experience much better. Bring at least 16 oz. Of water per person, maybe more. If you have knee, low back or ankle issues I would wait. It is steep at times for the unconditional but for the normal hiker, its a breeze. We also took some trails just north of the Y which were also nice and adventurous but make sure you bring a lot more water AND hiking snacks. My 9 year old did it easily but my 21 year old had a little knee issue that became a little worse.

Great hike! Nice view over Utah County. Id rate the hike like a 3.5 out of 5 stars for difficulty. Mainly because the very beginning is fairly steep and tiring, but afterwards its fairly easier, but still steep. It took about 45-50 min to get to the top of the Y for my wife and I, and were out of shape and took it slow. Definitely a great leg workout.

The Y as it is called locally, is a gigantic concrete and rubble letter constructed on the side of Y mountain. It is whitewashed / painted white. There is a well groomed gravel and dirt trail with lots of switchbacks which leads to the top of the feature. I got blisters on the back of my heels from my boots rubbing on them as I hiked the constant uphill grade. Id do it again, but Id put band-aids on the back of my heels first

If youre looking for a good workout or you want to do all the things youre supposed to do while in Provo, Y Mountain is the place for you. As far as scenery goes, anything else is better unless you want a view of Utah valley (or on a bad day in the winter, a view of the airborne toxins that are slowly killing everyone).

The best thing about Y mountain is its view of Utah county (its best viewed at night). The hike to the Y itself is ugly, steep, long, and winds back and forth so many times it will make your head spin—there are definitely prettier trails and hikes throughout Utah. This hike is one of those things that you have to do, just to say you did.

This is an excellent mountain. Its an extremely steep mountain with a very nice walking path. Half way up the mountain is a giant Y, poured in concrete. They paint the Y white every year, so it looks fresh. There are usually lots of people sitting on the Y. The mountain is actually called Y Mountain.

I love this mountain range but that ugly fing Y is a giant blemish on an otherwise gorgeous view. The fact that its now know as Y mountain pisses me off even more. Just because the majority of the local populous has been brainwashed into some fairy tale doesnt mean you get to vandalize nature. Its hideous and insulting. I dont care about the culture, your overbearing and society manipulating school, or how offended you might get over this review. I have lived in every state in the west and Utah has the most beautiful landscapes by far. If you believe a god is responsible for creating this scenery than the giant concrete Y is big middle finger to that god and only goes to show how inconsiderate the culture is to those who arent part of it. Its nothing more than just establishment graffiti.

The views from the top are what make this hike worth it. The hike itself isn’t something I would say is fun. While it doesn’t look to bad, it is very steep and will tire those who are looking for an easy hike or fast. In each of the times I’ve done it, I have thought I have been surprised by how tired I was by the time I got to the top.Once you’re at the top the views are great. You can see for miles and miles and definitely worth it. It’s not a terrible long hike, if you pace yourself it should take you between 35-45 minutes. Just make sure you bring water!
