We soo want our theater to weather the pandemic and have us back inside, again, soon!!
Ok. This will sound weird because I travel A LOT, but this is truly one of my favorite places anywhere and it makes me so happy it is my backyard! Friendly staff, first-run films, 2 amazing vintage theaters, nom nom pizza, snacks, beers on tap, wine options. Whats not to love!! Picture is the small upper theater.
Such a fun neighborhood theater! Only two screens, but I’ve never found that to be an issue -they always show the big movies out at the time. Friendly service and good heavy pours. A good spot to spend a rainy day. Taylor was the friendliest and definitely gave us a hefty serving of popcorn
Accidentally showed up three hours too soon, staff was accommodating and knowledgeable about the surrounding areas for good fun and time killing.Theater itself appears to only be two screens, but the circular interior makes for great sound. If you need to lose a tail; turn left upon entering, go up the stairs and into the top theatre, exit theater at front exit door and go back down the stairs, immediatly hook a left at the bottom of the stairs and take side street exit. You can be a block away while the tail is still adjusting their eyes in a room you immediately left.
I absolutely love this place. Yes its old and some of the seats need better cushioning. It has a very cool atmosphere, I always feel like Im in one of those movie theaters from an 80s horror movie lol. Tickets are cheaper than most cinemas, they have beer and tasty pizza! I can walk from my home in a few minutes. Check it out if you can!
A good place to catch a movie at a good price. Neat little snack and drink bar, and not too cold. (I usually get really cold at movie theaters)
One of our favorite St. Johns staples! Love the charm of this establishment. The pizza is awesome too.
It has a nice old school vibe to it and popcorn is vegan if ordered without butter. Just dont expect fanciest or nice details. This is a somewhat small, local and lean business.
I love this place good prices comfortable. They don’t mess with u about having a baby. I wouldn’t bring my kid if they were not chill. Only ok thing that bothers me is the sound is too loud. No bass. Just piercing sound when there’s action.
Love St. John’s area and the cinema is a perfect fit! Great prices, food and drink. First run movies and very friendly staff!
Such a wonderful and cozy theater! The staff is friendly, the space is so welcoming. As a shorter person the seats felt a little low for me, but it didnt bother me very much at all. This is one of my favorite spaces in North Portland for sure.
~ Always A Pleasure To Visit Anything St Johns ~~ The only theater I have been to in Portland that has a small town feel, reminds me of home.~ I also love that you can buy + drink craft beer in the theater, and they have cool Hollywood stars on the sidewalk out front. I think some local legends even sign them!
I love going to this theater. It’s nice and cozy. Good beer and pizza, surprisingly!
Love the Twin Cinemas so much. Good pizza, good beer selection, great staff, and $6 matinees makes movie viewing a wonderful experience. Usually have a kid friendly movie and a popular one, we check here first for a movie-going trip.
Nice classic feel type of theater with lots of options on food and drinks, and beer!
The best. Beer. Pizza. Good prices. Local. Friendly. Its not LA but better
Tiny place, friendly staff, good food. Underwhelmed by the sound quality, sounded better on my home surround sound.
I love this place for the local character. But the seats are small and not comfortable.
This was my first time coming to this theater. I went to see Crazy Rich Asians with my daughter. I like having a table by me to put our food on it. And I love the fact we can drink beer here. Price was better than Im used to. Other than that, this was an older place and small, which I dont mind at all. It definitely works for me. I will come back again for sure!
Such a great place for movies, good pizza, and beer. Very reasonably priced. Its my favorite theater!
This is the friendliest and most relaxed theater I have ever visited. It is the only place I go for movies in Portland.
Nice vintage feeling space, decent food and beer prices
Amaing prices on new movies and great prices on pizza and beer.
Great theater, decent pizza, great little place for seeing first run flicks without having to really leave my neighborhood. Will definitely come again.
A favorite Portland area movie theater, especially the main (lower level) screen.
Love that they actually play NEW Movies right as they are Released & for only $6 a ticket!! Awesome 2 large sodas & large popcorn combo for only $12 also.. Seats arent that great BUT for less than HALF the price as big theatres its DEFINITELY worth it!!!Only cons: I understand its the very beginning of Winter but the heat was on FULL BLAST for over half of the movie, all three of us were SWEATING! Even my husband that is ALWAYS Cold asked if the theatre doubled as a Sauna haha :P..And the seats.. Take some ibuprofen with you ;)
Love going to the movies their. One of my favorite places to go.
A good size theater. Has areas for food and drinks to rest which is nice.
Beautiful theater. Comfortable seats, Great pizza and pleasant staff
Cozy neighborhood theater with good popcorn.
I love this theater. It’s lovely, affordable and well stocked with food, snacks, and refreshing adult beverages. if that’s your thing. They play all the latest movies and I feel completely safe letting my 12 year old go there with a friend. Two theaters. One big, one small. Genuinely friendly staff. It’s a gem. Support them! I always see someone I know there. They are such an anchor for this neighborhood. So happy to have St Johns Twin Cinema in our Main Street.
This theaters employees are awesome, cheerful & friendly! Has nice architecture, easy access for alter-abled people and has it done right with the movies! Multiple movies and times!A far sight better than the standardized chain run theaters!
Old fashioned movie theater. I really enjoy the vibe here. They sold popcorn, pizza, soda, and beer. The bathroom was pretty small but the theater was a nice size.
There are plenty of nicer theaters, but St Johns Twin Cinema is cozy, down the street, and cheap, so Ill usually go here first. The upstairs auditorium is alas a pretty compromised experience though - shallow, wide, awkward seats and annoverly large projection. Suggestion to management - upstairs could be made a better viewing experience for most by projecting SMALLER. Currently, any but middle seats in the back few rows have a hard time seeing all of the screen.
St. Johns gem. Cool old movie theater showing first run movies at a reasonable price. They serve pizza and beer and you can bring coffee drinks in from Affogato next door. Awesome, friendly staff. Dont forget to tip!
St. Johns Twin Cinemas are the best place in North Portland to catch a movie. First run, two screens, great staff, really good pizza to enjoy during the movie. The only negative is that the seats in the lower (bigger) cinema are showing their age, and can get uncomfortable during longer movies.
Always has room and a good beer selection.
What’s not to love about affordable first run movies, pizza and adult beverages!
Great place! Only has two theaters, but for the price, its worth it! Speaking of, go see IT: Chapter Two!!!
Tiny double cinema in St Johns. Has the usual snack offerings you would expect from a small independent cinema, including beer and pizza. Prices are decent. Most of their showings are first run, tends to have at least one kids feature. For more artsy showings, go to Cinema 21 or Hollywood. Feels like a neighborhood theater, which is largely a thing of the past. My one gripe is that I wish they had cheap canned beer, like Rainer.
Simply cant beat this place. Crazy affordable matinee or evening first run movies. Fantastic classic theater. Worth traveling to St. Johns just to catch a flick here. Small pitchers of beer available. Tasty popcorn. I like the sweet crust on the pizza they cook fresh on site. Movie + beer + popcorn still cheaper than a national chain.
This theater is nearly perfect. The only reason Im giving it a one star review is because they have nothing to help my hearing impaired mother watch movies. Other theaters weve gone to have had a small device that allowed her to read captions, but this one doesnt have anything like that. This theater is fantastic for people who arent hearing impaired, but youll have to find your own solution or find another theater if you have impaired hearing.
Then my friend for over 40 remind me of my childhood and easy on the wallet as well
The building is beautiful. The first floor theater is old timey and gorgeous. The selection of beer and other drinks is great, the popcorn... I could go just for the popcorn. There is a bit of sound bleed between the two theaters, but nothing substantial. I love this place and the price is $8 for a ticket, which is amazing. There are even tables in the back of the main theater for food and in the middle of the upstairs theater.
Keep this place alive folks! Local business, still showing actual 35mm film on the big screen, pizza, beer, reasonable prices. This is what were here for.
Since I was a kid thia place has always been good.
Im not saying you should sneak a pint from the liquor store in, but.... Ummm.... I really love this place
Great pizza and friendly service. They do need to upgrade their seats. Not comfortable at all, sagging.
Had a great time! Remind me of the old cinemas from my childhood days. The theater was cozy and the atmosphere was like a home theater. We were in the 2nd floor theater which is the smallest. The seats were close and very old with none moving armrests but comfortable none-the-les. Big Positive is the Pizza! It was Amazing The accommodations for people with disabilities is excellent!! There is a ramp walkway with rails up to the 2nd floor, a wheelchair available, wide doors and rails inside the theater. The staff were very friendly and helpful
Portland area has a lot of ni e boutique theatres. This is not the fanciest but is still pretty nice and charming. The upstairs auditorium has suprisingly good sound and almost prefer it to down stairs. Some of the seats are a bit worn though.
Great old theater with reasonable prices, buttery popcorn.
Always my go-to! Able to enjoy drinks and pizza along with traditional popcorn and movie snacks. Comfortable seating, and prices are not outrageous like commercial theaters!
It was my first theater, went there with my mom,was her first theater as well, and my children and now its my grandsons as well. A memory still accessible. A lovely family tradition. Its charming has lots of personality and now its got beer and pizza.sounds like maybe a bad date but trust me. It could be a great time, and just maybe a good memory .
Great food and friendly employees. Only problem was parking. But everything else was fantastic
On most occasions I love this place, you can have a beer, but on this occasion it projector and the upstairs theater was down and I could not see the movie that I wanted to see.
Good prices.Main stream movies.Pizza. Beer.Get there early. Line for beer and popcorn can get long.
Funky retro local movie house. Adult drinks, good popcorn and steep seating.
The best part of St. Johns
Pizza, Coke, beers, popcorn, candy... And it is all very affordable!!
Best movie theater! Amazing pizza, refreshments, and first run movies with an incredibly friendly staff.
Great prices. CRAPPY PIZZA!! Used to have better pizza. We used to go to this theater all the time, but since they changed their pizza, the kids just dont like going here anymore. They still have great ticket prices for first run movies and excellent popcorn and drink prices.
The cutest theater you could ask for! Tasty food, cheap shows--if only it didnt shut down to minors after eight pm... St. Johns is lucky to have it around. The Hot Lips soda is far superior to the fountain drinks. Candy prices arent extortionate, but the pizzas the good deal. Sometimes the kiddos get obnoxious, but its sort of fun to hear everyone around you reacting to a kitschy trailer or something.
An unassuming, old historical theater that offers cheap tickets and your standard movie theater fare at the concession area. the staff are extremely laid back--maybe too laid back the cinema itself is nothing to write home about but the seats are comfortable and not dingy, and the sound isnt awful. ill take a cheaper, welcoming theater like the Twin over an overpriced chain like the Regal any day of the week.
Went to see, A Star is Born, great movie. The theater is older and not crowded, yet beer and several flavors of pizza usually available and seats with tables for your goodies.
Cozy and quaint St.John neighborhood spot. Very inexpensive, uncrowded, and they show the newest and/or popular movie releases. Within walking distance to eateries and bars. A great date night experience!!
Love this place. Good people, decent seating, feels like a friends living room. The ambiance of the place is whats so good, just an easy, laid-back vibe with the folks behind the counter bringing the real essence of awesomeness. Not fake niceness, just real character in the best possible way.The pizza is decent, beer is on the menu, the popcorn is salty, and the candy is all the standard goodness: Reeses peanut butter cups, gummies, junior mints, etc. And water with paper cups on the side, which is a really smart idea and is great for customers. This small act counters the many things I hate about your average commercial movie theater: given the high cost of everything, what a nice gesture that you can get a cup of water for free.Other drinks are also available, like Nantucket Nectars, and other brands I cant remember but theyre in the drinks cooler.Good sound, big screens.
Great. 3.50 for a large drink is fantastic.
That sour cherry cider makes any movie enjoyable
I like it here! Its not supported on movie pass and I come here anyway, thats how much I like it. But I wish they still had local radio station KMHD playing before previews. And I wish there was convenient parking. Most of the whole block is not movie friendly, with parking time limits less than 2 hours ...I dont know who makes those decisions but. ...why? And they dont want you to park in any of the parking lots nearby, either! So you have to go early to try to find a parking spot before the movie starts. Irksome.
The theater was still the same as when I last visited back in the early 90s no reservations seating was very uncomfortable and it was not as enjoyable as when I was a youth was not any less expensive then if we went to a more modern theater this is a place my wife and I will most likely never visit again untell certne comforts are met would be a cool place to go if the seating was redone and the painting in the theater was gon over not new design but freshen up the old and more leg room for your customers
Comfy, cheap and local. The only place I ever want to go see a movie ever again! I love that they turned the balcony into an enclosed second theatre. Steep raked seating upstairs so youre super close. Recent renovations really improved the sound quality too.
Love this place. Great prices. Good sound system ( better than some multiplexes). And reasonably priced snacks including Pizza beer wine and cider.
Great theater- intimate started life as a vaudeville theater in the 1920s!!
Go to another theater. If you read other reviews, youll repeatedly see not busy. Theres a reason for that. This is the theater everyone goes to who gets kicked out of real theaters with security. If you like people talking, texting, singing along with songs in movies, etc., this is your theater. Dont take my word for it though. Go see a blockbuster movie opening weekend. It might be half full because every audience has 10 Judd Nelsons from The Breakfast Club.
Love this theater, but the chairs need replaced.
Love the ambience and matinee prices.
Great local cinema. Comfortable seats, beer and pizza available. Good deal - Only $6 per person before 6pm.
Enjoyed the movie experience!
Great beers, nice food, good candy options. Low prices and good viewing from every seat. The seats themselves are a little worn, and in some cases wonky, but with two screens showing the latest hot films you wont mind too much. Do skip the pint, and go for the mini pitcher of beer though.
This theater reminds me of the small town I grew up in. Its sorta small with two screens, but the workers there are very friendly and the food/beer selection is delicious! My only complaint is the current state of the seating. Most of the seats are old and offer little support for ones back during a 2-3 hour movie. My suggestion is to go early to ensure you find one of the non-broken seats, trust me, its worth it!
Really fabulous smaller cheap theater. The two screening rooms give very different movie experiences. The pizza and beer are a really nice touch
Five stars because popcorn on the floor from past showings is part of an authentic movie-going experience! Catch a flick and improve your gut health in the same sitting -- they have killer kombucha plus popcorn with nutritional yeast. Yum.
I love the area I love the fact that its around the corner and its cute! But they need to remodel make it look clean and newer, either way I still love it.
Hello,It was my first time in this area. I had a very hungry child and was looking for food for her. I walked by a pizza window. I did not realize it was attached to this theater. When I did, I went to the theater door and saw an employee inside the ticket booth. I tapped on the window to ask if it would be possible to purchase a slice without seeing a movie. The staff member was sitting at her workstation, wearing earbuds with her back to the window. She did not acknowledge me but used her finger to point to a sign that stated that the theater would open at 1.pm. I believe it was about 15 minutes till 1pm. I was shocked by the rudeness and could not understand why an employee at their workstation would refuse to speak to a possible customer. I tapped again and got the finger again. I tapped a third time and she took off her earbuds, made a face and opened the window. I asked about the pizza and she answered. I then asked her for her name (Cornelia) and I asked her why she could not have answered me the first time I tapped. She stated she was not on duty until the theater opened. I do not know of any workplace where staff is not paid to come in before opening to set up. I also do not know of any workplace where employees sit at their workstation, off the clock, in the public eye. I certainly have never been ignored by any theater employee while they were sitting at the ticket booth. I told her that I thought her behavior had been ignorant and that I would speak to the manager. She stated she did not have to take this from me and that the manager would agree. This person represents the theater when on the premises, clocked in, or not. It is her responsibility to treat customers with respect and courtesy. I found her behavior significantly unprofessional and rude, and as a result, I will not buy pizza or see movies at this theater. I also hope if the manager is in the habit of allowing his staff to sit in the ticket booth, off the clock, and disrespect possible customers, he changes the sign on the ticket booth so his off the clock staff wont be disturbed by possible customers.
Old school theater with cheap first-run movies, you gotta love it. Their pizza is delicious, and the brews on tap are always excellent. Being old school, though, includes the seats, which basically means I prefer shorter movies at this theater!Special props to the staff for handling a belligerent patron when we were there.
Love this theater. Its simple, has a great sound system and the staff are really cool people! We always look here first for movies.
Reasonably priced (which is hard to find nowadays), friendly staff and a vintage feel. I love bringing the family there to see new movies!
Place is nice to watch a movie but seating a bit uncomfortable.
Good prices, great environment, small town st Johns feel..
Historic independent theatre with just two screens. Upstairs is the much smaller theatre. Downstairs theatre also has more seating available with a table. Parking lot for Oregon plates only and inexpensive ticket prices. Candy, soda, popcorn, pizza, beer, juice, water, and wine are able to be purchased for a decent price.
I love this place!
I have been coming to the St. Johns theater since I was a little girl and I love it. Its so convenient. The customer service is amazing as well!!
Great spot. Very reasonable prices. Comfy seats and a rad older building.
I took myself to see Aqua Man recently !! The consesions are quality and affordable, especially compared to a mega chain. This theater is a small run, neighborhood gem !! Very comfortable, and the audiece applauded at the end of the film !!
Great local spot. Love watching movies at this venue.
Nice seats and they serve beer. Get there early or you will not have much of a choice. Excellent ticket price.
Epic old school theater in the middle of at Johns. Good pizza and beer selection. If possible dont see movies in the upstairs theater if possible not the best place to watch. Still can beat the prices
Love going to these smaller theatres where they sell booze and pizza. Some of the seats downstairs have tables. Overall a nice theatre for a good value.
