I’ve been to some pretty big zoos but knew going into this one, that it was going to be much smaller. The animal selection was appropriate for seeing animals native to Idaho. Some of the cages seemed a bit small (remember, I’m used to massive zoos) but none of the animals seemed unhappy. In fact, what my daughter and I experienced was quite delightful.A small town zoo doesn’t do it justice. The keepers and the animals have a connection. In many cases, we got to interact with the zoo keepers before, during, and after feeding, and saw their interaction with the animals firsthand. It seemed at times, the zoo animals were pets. Sure they kept their wild demeanor but there was a sort of domestication or familiar bond with the staff there.Plus, each of the staff we spoke to, really took time to talk to us. My daughter was fascinated and spent a good hour following one of the staff, asking her questions. Their knowledge of the animals proved to me that they do truly care for them.Another plus for this zoo, is the layout (for those who don’t have difficulty walking). For a short time, it felt more like we were on a nature hike, enjoying the plant life and rocky scenery.Last plus - the cost. Cheapest zoo I’ve ever paid for!!!I suppose the negatives would be no masks required - however, the open air and spacious layout with multiple paths to take made it easy for us to keep our distance. The zoo also wasn’t offering food/drinks and the petting zoo was closed due to COVID. Lastly, they were doing construction so a large portion was shut down and the animals moved. I didn’t feel any of these ‘negatives’ warranted dropping the review. Overall, it’s a great zoo.I look forward to going back and so does my daughter. Recommend!!
Im very happy that this zoo has native Idaho animals. The bear enclosure is wonderful and the bears appear healthy and somewhat happy. I was with a senior who uses oxygen. The paths were fairly difficult for her, and there were few rest benches. We didnt attempt the steep section. Its wonderful but not very accessible for all. BTW, I dont believe I could have pushed a wheelchair around, either.
Staff was very friendly and helpful! My friend had a walker and difficulty going up the steep slope, so they gave us a tour on the cart. Loved the information we learned about the animals!
Its an average small city zoo that doesnt receive enough funding(or visitors)for upgrades. Sad really. Some animals like the bison and bear cubs (located in the far back, be prepared for a hike) have it pretty good. The bald eagle loves to talk and they are working on his cage upgrade. Others like the mountain lion, black bears and badger live in cement and steal cages. I was disappointed with the lack of direction, no maps and no arrows. The kid at the check in lacked customer service skills and offered little information. Please dont let this discourage you from checking out this Zoo. They need visitors so they can get the upgrades the animals deserve.
Its a small zoo that you can easily walk thru. Staff were very friendly. Admission is very cheap, which is great due to the size of the zoo. My children had fun here, though it was quite hot out so we didnt stay long.
I go to zoo buddies ($3 for my kiddo and me) and Zoo for Tots ($8). They are both weekly events during the summer. Great way to get out and meet other kids and their grownups in the community. Check out the events on Facebook for all the details. But theres a reading program from Marshall library at the playground (zoo buddies) and theres a weekly story, craft, and animal encounter (zoo for tots) during the summer... Maybe longer? Im not quite sure.I give four stars because I saw animals there that are from this area except, in a cage and it breaks my heart. Especially birds in cages that cant fly or fly far.I wish the zoo was more like The Living Desert (Palm Springs, CA). Most, if not all, of the animals there have been hurt and cannot be released into the wild. It doesnt make me sad to see an American Bald Eagle in a cage because its wing was broken and it cannot fly. They even have animals that were once domesticated and eventually were abandoned or attacked their owners. Zoos need to make changes just like circuses are. There are plenty of hurt animals who dont get second chances at life, lets stop breeding animals to be put behind bars.I do appreciate all the programs that are available to the community. They are really fun.
We enjoyed this zoo. We visited in October and the grounds were beautiful.
Its a nice little zoo for tourist passing by. It can take 30 minutes to see all of it if youre a fast walker. Itll take about 1 hr or more if you have small kids.
Confusing layout. Poorly maintained. Signage is in bad shape. 1/2 the zoo looks like its been completely forgotten. Would not recommend.
This zoo was so awesome, in a great setting..one of the best
Even tho its small, its home.... and a good reminder that humans are only one of Gods creatures on this planet. The animals are treated really well and the staff is amazing. Keep up the good work
Theyve done a great job of making the zoo look great! Each exhibit looks well taken care of and is a fun experience.
Pocatello Zoo. Small but inexpensive and kind of neat to see. It is worth the cost.
If youre looking for a fun time bring your family over to the zoo you can definitely tell her explain it and theyre doing some updating however your experience still pretty good over there when we went all the animals were very active out and about. They have a peacock that likes to just wander around the park so it might his own business. I personally like to go when the park is free when is Free Zoo day here in Pocatello. My personly have been to many zoos I like to collect the magnets from the different zoos and they finally started selling magnets and this one is not that bad of a Zoo its not as big as other cities but its still pretty fun especially how so close to Ross Park. They do have a play area for little kids. The only downside I see currently is that when its free zoo Day Parking can be kind of tight.
Nice walk, peaceful and bits of history on each animal group.
Great zoo, exceeded our expectations
For as small as it is and the cheap price for entry I thoroughly enjoyed this place
I love their Bald Eagle. I wish I could have it as a pet to do my bidding.
Great for the kids and very easy to navigate
We loved this zoo! We stopped off on our way home on a Sunday and were honestly expecting a train wreck. We were happy mistaken! All of the animals were happy and all enclosures were clean and well taken care of. The petting zoo was closed, but we were still able to interact with all of the animals inside. We got to meet a couple of the zoo keepers and they were very knowledge about the individual animals and their rescue stories. They had personal relationships with all the animals which is very nice to see. The animals were playful and active. Very much worth the stop if you are in the area!
You wouldnt think that a small place like this would have a zoo, but they do! Its right on the lace rock and for what Ive been told by countless locals, its actually a cool place. The have some new wetlands exhibit, so if your wondering if its worth the money and the time, it is for sure! I would definitely go back because the wetland exhibit looks like its gonna be awesome.
Went last summer for family reunion. The worst zoo Ive ever seen! Ive been to rescues/sanctuaries and small/large zoos all over the country. Inhumane to their animals and dangerous poorly built paths and enclosures. The animals were so miserable. It was heartbreaking and pitiful! They made the El Paso Zoo look good! :(
Small zoo that is inexpensive. Adult ticket is 475 and then prices go down from that. Go first thing to see animals active. Several places to sit and eat lunch if you pack it in.
We love the pocatello zoo. We are excited for the exhibit on top to be done. Its cheap, its shady enough to find a spot to sit and cool off. lots of animals and fun facts. Walking trails are a little rough on the top level, and a few steeper hills, but ot never seems to bother the kids. Fun petting zoo and awesome tree house for kids to play on.
This is a very very sad place. Really small not much variety.
To be fair, I should start this review with a big disclaimer: Im not a fan of zoos. That being said, what makes this one different and good is that all the animals are indigenous to the region and, most importantly, all rescue animals. We have a wonderful director and hardworking staff and Im excited to see all the plans they have in store!
It could be a really nice place to take your family. It needs a lot of work and they are trying to get funding to make it a better place for their animals as well as for the public.
Awesome little zoo with plenty of animals!
Its a small zoo in a small town. It doesnt have exotic animals, just animals native to the area. There is a lot of heart and soul in the zoo, but do not go in thinking its going to blow your mind. If you want to see some animals in surroundings theyre used to, and have fun time for the kids, this will do fine. Be ready for some hiking up and down steep hills, but its a great way to spend some time and get a little closer to nature.
The zoo was nice. Native breeds shown. Its a growing zoo and you can tell they are putting effort into it. All the staff was nice and were all caring for the animals. Its a walk so bring good shoes. Expect little ones to tire out.
It is a nice small zoo. Not very crowded.
Fun for the whole family. Went to the free day. Need to finish some exhibits. Since they werent finished last year either. Would of given 5 stars if they were finished. Also petting zoo part was closed. It was the highlight for my 4 yr old last year.
Havent been there in years.
Great place to go on a date!
We were catered to by staff. They rode us around in a golf cart and showed us some of the main exhibits. The wild life wondering around the park was nice to see, and we had a great time
A small zoo compared to others. The animals look in better health than most zoos. Worth the trip detour to see this place
Very nice zoo for the price
Its winter, so hard to tell what the zoo is really like. What I saw was nice. The gal taking the entrance fee was _very_ knowledgeable and sharing of the knowledge. Im sure in spring and summer its awesome. Will review then
I liked how the grizzly bears had a nice open exhibit but felt sorry for the black bears in their concrete cell. Most animals seemed well cared for and relaxed. A few seemed very nervous but it was opening day. Will go back again.
Really cool zoo featuring animals of the Intermountain West.
Nice small zoo. Only thing I did not like was the very small bird habitats. The new eagle habitat should be 3 or 4 times the area and 3 times as tall!
Pretty lame, nobody wore masks
I really quite like this zoo. But be warned it is a native animal zoo, so you wont see things like tigers, elephants, and monkeys. They do have bears, bison, coyotes, bighorn sheep, elk, and the like. They have made lots of improvements recently to make it ADA accessible, but there are some steep paths to navigate to some of the enclosures. It also looks like they are putting in a small lake, so hopefully they will be able to increase the variety of animals.
Lots of fun
The path ran the whole park which was nice. There was a lot of bird poo you had to watch out for. Over all the kids had fun.
I love this little zoo. We always enjoy the animals. Its being renovated right now but still worth the trip.
We love this place! The staff is friendly and well educated. Its a great zoo!
It was great! More of a laid back vibe than ones Ive been too.
(Dont expect lions tigers and polar bears here, it only displays native species!) This is an amazing native zoo! The staff here really care about the animals, and answer any question you ask them! They have peacocks and chickens roaming outside of the enclosures for a close up experience, and some wild rockchucks might sneak into some exhibits! The animals are active and happy, (I saw some reviews saying that the animals lied around all day and were not happy at all, but this is not true, if they are laying around, they are just hot and want shade. And almost all the animals in Zoo Idaho are injured animals found in the wild, so this zoo does way more good then bad) All animals have shelters int their exhibits if they want to hide, and they all get adequate food and water. The petting zoo is over the top, but there are a few things it could improve on. I feel like some of the exhibits are just a little too small, the restrooms are not well spread out, and they need a bit more shade on the upper section. Worth a visit if you are passing through or visiting relatives.
Went there for Free Zoo day. Main issue was there being only 2 available restrooms, both located near the entrance. No additional restrooms available, so if youre all the way at the top by the Grizzly exhibit and need a bathroom, youre out of luck. Zoo staff should have planned better and had port-a- pottys available.
I saw a lot of Marmots when I went but it was actually cool as heck because Ive never seen a Marmot before and I thought they were escaping zoo animals.
They have more native animals here which is nice, but the place doesnt have a lot of exhibits. They have a ton of land, and some day it may be really great, but right now its not. I get in free with another zoos pass that I have, otherwise I wouldnt pay to go in. They have a play structure for the kids that they like.
It was a little small, but low entry fee.
Shabby.Somber.Small.Sad.Not safe,Not sanitary.Animals are scant and scared.Much better Zoo is located in Idaho Falls.
Fun day trip. The zoo only has animals native to Idaho, so no tigers or monkeys, but it has a huge variety of local wildlife. Exhibits have been updated recently, and the zoo easy to walk through. A bit pricey for the length, but a nice outing.
Need more corporate money to help grow and improve but a great way to spend morning
Great little zoo with happy ice cream day promotion! What a happy surprise for an end to a family vacation.I wonder at the ability to watch the animals more with less people
Nice little zoo for kids& family, can easily be done in a few hours!
Tiny zoo. Nice if you need something out of the ordinary to do, but nothing to write home about as far as exhibits.
Nice little zoo. Good for an hour or two stroll, see some animals, usually not very busy.
I loved it
Wonderful zoo with some really cool exhibits and the staff were really friendly. Theyre expanding and have done some awesome renovations. I know that the animals are captive but they look really healthy and well cared for. Bring nice walking shoes as there are some steep hills (which is nice to add some exercise in).
Celebrating the big birthday number for teen for the oldest great-niece no fighting Among Us
Worst place ever. I cried for the animals. I only saw available water for the animals in like 2 or 3 habitats. Its really sad. You know the animals need help when they lay there making eye contact with you with what looks like tears in their eyes. When you walk away the just lay their heads. The animals really need help.
We had a great time with 4 kids between the ages of 3-10. Friendly staff and the perfect size to little ones. We were impressed with all of the different animals featured. Great value in terms of admission rates.
Employees were very friendly and knowledgeable. It was a better than a bigger zoo when we were told they were native animals. Good experience.
So much fun! The animals were beautiful. It was like a hike, but so worth it. The people who work were so nice and friendly and answered all our questions. Cant wait to come back and see the wetland exhibit when finished.
A staff was super nice, helpful and very interactive with our children. The exhibits showed off some of the wonderful animals found in Idaho. It was a good family outing.
The zoo is undergoing a lot if improvements! All animals are provided for and given access to shade when temperatures are too hot! Excellent indigenous zoo!!
Every animalwas well taken care of and they show only local wildlife here.
Nice, small zoo. Small entry fee. Renovation in progress... however missed seeing bison after two round of walking up the hillside. Be prepared to walk slightly steep up to bear, fox, etc.
Only one working water machine but other than that it was a good visit. Wethe animals come up close to the barriers so we got a good look at almost all the animals. Plus we went on a free ice cream day! it was so much fun. The kids got to play on the play ground and feed animals at the petting zoo
Lots to do. And good animals too.
Kids had a blast. Grizzly bears were awesome to watch
Pretty disappointed going for my first time. I understand it’s under construction, but it definitely wasn’t worth driving out of town for on a Saturday. We couldn’t find the entrance and was very confusing... the petting zoo was locked and didn’t see any staff. The slide was way too hot for children, there were stairs my husband had to lift the stroller over, they had signs pointing to exhibits but when walking quite a ways to find out no exhibits exist and multiple paths leading to no where. The vending machine only had pop and no water. Just not impressed. I’m only giving 3 stars because the grizzly bear exhibit was awesome. I’d be happy to give it another chance in the far future, but not for awhile under construction with the confusion.
The best zoo I have ever been too !
Great animals, just needed more big ones to come out.
Pocatello zoo small but fun hasnt changed much in 20 yrs
This zoo is pretty cool for what it is. It should be mentioned that this zoo is for animals native to the west. Bison, bears, deer, mountain sheep, mountain lions etc. You dont pay what a big zoo charges either. 5.75 for adults. Overall a great experience.
Its a pretty small zoo, pretty nice though.
Great zoo keepers helped me out with cart ride when they didnt have any wheel chairs, so is beautiful, animals were well cared for.
The zoo is in a terrible location. The bison and grizzly bear exhibits are the best part of the zoo, but are difficult to get to because of the steep climb along the path. I definitely dont recommend anyone with accessibility needs attend this zoo.
The staff were super nice and told us some facts 9f the animals
Fun local wildlife. Zoo Boo was less exciting in 2018 than it was in previous years though. Far less vendors/activities.
Awesome got to learn about training practices for American bald eagle
Very nice for a small zoo, animals super active, not crowded
Tiny cages tons of walking with no animals to look at for long periods of time. Only one restroom and the only drinks you can buy are from a vending machine. There are two vending machines the one at the bear exhibit and the one by the tree house. The bear one had Powerade and water however it was out of order the one by the tree house and only bathroom only had coke and monsters. The playground was locked up all thr water fountains were turned off. If you have someone who cant walk up steep inclines ot in a wheel chair dont go. I would hate to have to try to push a stroller up and down that uneven black top. Im seriously disappointed.
This is a great local zoo it only features animals that you would find In the immediate area so no monkeys or tigers. Still totally worth checking out
Not many animals but the ones they have are visible. Cost is very reasonable. Little kids will enjoy it about 9 and under
Very small zoo with a few educational displays.
We completely lucked out! On our way home to SLC, UT from Idaho falls we decided to check out a zoo. Zoo Idaho on free ice cream day for 25 cents more per person, unlimited ice cream plus the whole zoo!! Wed go back just for the zoo!
Very fun for the whole family. Bear exhibits are close and awesome
The zoo is not very well laid out. Not accessible and if there was no grizzly bear it would be boring. Very unfortunate the way it is but they need to put more effort in the zoo.
Wonderful place has all the animals you can imagine and there is a waterpark nearby!!! I suggest doing the zoo first then swimming. In the case of being hungry after the Zoo there is a really good restaurant nearby called Elmers great food and wonderful service!
This zoo was much nicer than expected and had a good selection of local wildlife. The admission was affordable and the facilities were nice. I would like to see more shade for the Grizzlies, as it was 90+ degrees and they were fighting over the pool to cool off. The black bears seemed confined as well and were doing a lot of pacing. Would like to see something on par with the grizzly exhibit to give them space. It wasnt crowded and it was nice that my son could pet the farm animals. We will definitely be back.
