My 5 year old granddaughter took swim lessons with Johnny, 5 days in a role. She could not swim when she started and at the end of day 5 she was swimming under water! He was such a good teacher she continues to practice what he said and now goes to the bottom of the pool to get rings, back floats, swims under and swam across our pool above water! Jonny was a great teacher I highly recommend swim lessons at the YMCA!
Much better basketball program this year. Coach Brian and Coach Steve (volunteer coaches were fantastic). Chris at the Y is very friendly and encouraging to parents and knows and remembers a remarkable number of the kids names. Still room for improvement with refs and scoreboard staff. So many cancelled practices for basketball as the basketball program is linked with Plainfield schools.
The staff at Avery is fantastic. Their updated layout and enforcement of covid prevention initiatives is commendable
Continued sanitation efforts, cleanliness and staff presence w/ cleaning supplies throughout to include workout equipment.
Nice to back at the gym. The pool is a nice place to give the kids some fun and exercise.
My family has been members for 7 years and its been a BALL! I LOVE Kristens dance/workout classes and Lidias Zumba dance/workout classes the most!
Such a great place filled with amazing work staff, who are always attentive. Great activities for kids and adults. They offer it all!
I went to the summer camp there for 7 years nothing but bad kids would pass out in the heat the counclers did nothing the older kids were juuling and the counclers helped there was nothing good f this camp
Super incompetent staff. Horrible experience. Ruined my kids day
This is the third year my granddaughter has attended the YMCA day camp! I am thrilled with the program they offer. The swim lessons are amazing, the field trips were so enjoyable. I loved my morning greeting from Andrew and Alyssa they were like a little bit of sunshine to start my day! Great staff!
Treated very rude today at the front service desk, just trying to get some information. The lady was not at all friendly and just wanted to get rid of my friend and me. Will never go back here and would not recommend this place.
People are si nice and it is clean
The teachers dragged my son (2 at the time) across the floor while he was enrolled in preschool.
The Family Pool area is great!
I was very disappointed with the treatment of my family at the Plainfield YMCA during a recent visit. We are a military family stationed in San Antonio and we’re visiting our family in the Joliet IL area and since we have nationwide membership decided to visit this facility. The first day we went, the two people at the desk were busy with other members so we scanned our ids and the young man at the front desk waved us along so we thought that was all we had to do. We had checked online and it said when visiting another ymca, we would have to sign a waiver but we thought since we’d been waved in and the ids were scanned we were covered. We walked around, touring the facility on our own and saW the child watch room had tubes and tunnels and slides to climb. We thought this would be excellent for our little ones to burn off energy during our winter visit so two days later, we returned with our daughters, scanned our ids as last time and went to the child watch. We told them we were visiting and they said our kids couldn’t be watched by their staff as that is their policy. I mentioned the waiver they had never presented to us and they said they still could not take our children. Our kids at this point were in tears because they could not understand why they weren’t being allowed to participate. We then explained we were a military family visiting to the front desk and they said the same yet could not provide us with a written policy. They then called their director Lisa who approved the use of the child watch. So what is the policy when visiting another ymca? We have visited other Ymcas throughout San Antonio and never had an issue using the child watch. Also when stationed in Ohio, when touring the Ymcas before joining, our children were allowed to go to child watch. We’ve also been to other IL and Ohio Ymcas and have never encountered this. We understand liability and will gladly sign a waiver, also if this is the policy then fine we will follow it, but I could not find anything stating that nationwide membership did not include the child watch amenity. Then the third time we visited the Plainfield ymca, we scanned our ids as we had the last two times and this time the front desk staff stopped us and asked if we were nationwide members since our ids hadn’t worked even though they scanned an error message appeared. They then said we had to sign a waiver and questioned us having used the facility prior. Lisa the director was right next to the young lady attending to us and said she did not remember us, except she did not tell us directly she spoke to the young lady helping us. It seemed as though she was insinuating we were lying about having been there since we had not signed a waiver. It is not our fault that her staff did not follow protocol and allowed us to use the facility even though an error message had appeared or the second time they didn’t make us sign a waiver and just gave us a verbal approval. While all this was upsetting, what was the worst was that after knowing we were a military family, not one employee thanked us or my husband for his service and we were treated poorly, pretty much penalized for serving our country and not being a local facility member (their unclear policies were always for facility members- which due to being stationed elsewhere with the military we could not be even if we wanted to). YMCA is supposed to be family friendly and it felt as though it was not, it was not military family friendly and I hope that the nationwide membership policies can be clear and accessible in the future. We do not recommend the C. W. Avery YMCA in Plainfield, IL and will be letting our family, friends, and fellow military families and veterans know, as well as the YMCA’s Joliet regional and corporate offices.
PARENTS BEWARE! have been a member for years, unfortunately I don’t think I can return. My 4 year old daughter has been let out of the child care 2xs without me going in to pick her up. There is not a strict enough policy of checking kids in and out.... Chuck E. Cheese has a better system. I spoke to the COO about this and the only result was the ladies that work there whispering about me when I went to try one more time to see if I could trust it. I couldn’t believe it! As a mother I would only want to reassure another mother that their child was going to be looked after in a caring environment. I have reached out to many other former members and current employees of the Y and they told me that this is a common occurrence that management has not fixed. When I first brought this up to the local Y. Management I was given nothing but a response in defense of their policy... a policy that left my 4 year old wandering around by the front desk with nobody noticing. How can you defend that??? Something needs to be done and other moms need to be informed.
Very crowded at all times. There is never anywhere to play basketball. The mornings have adult games on the weekends and they take the entire gym. Then there are programs and parties that take up the gym. With all the money in membership and parties, you would think they would expand the gym. It’s hard to continue to pay membership and my kids can never play here.
I would give them a 5 star, however, I’m very disappointed in the new staff they hired in the check-in process at summer camp. You would think the face to represent the YMCA summer camp is friendly, welcoming, and customer service oriented individual.... unfortunately, NOT. Not only do I pay a $79 monthly membership but also my children are enrolled in other activities which I pay for, in addition to $195 per week for summer camp.... ymca get it together!
Parents please read these reviews. The odds of your child being mistreated here, sometimes severely and physically, are very very high.
Very nice and helpful staff
The gymnastics and swimming coaches are awesome. My children and I have been coming here for almost two years and have had nothing but good experiences. The kids corner is great when I’m working out too! Staff is friendly and the facility is always clean.
Awesome YMCA!!! I only go at the lightest times, very clean, everyone minds their business, and the staff is very helpful and friendly!
This is just about the pool. Overall it was great for our family. Ive never been to a place that had family lockers rooms before. Complete work the little spin dryers and all. The pool water was warm but VERY cloudy. Maybe 4 feet of visablity at best.
My daughter attended the Kid Zone and the Day out of School Care. And I will never take her back! she has complained about the counselors being on their phones all the time and The adults SCREAMING in kids faces. That was just for the day out of school care. For Kid Zone I have seen the counselors scream at kids for no apparent reason. and my child has complained about the adults screaming at the kids that they suck and that made my child CRY!!!!! I would not recommend this care or place to anybody!
I have had mostly good experiences but couldnt get a reasonable answer why spectators for kids soccer cant sit on the parking lot side of the field. Watched the ref move elderly people from the shade to sit facing the sun. I just cant make sense of it.
Amazing staff, always clean locker rooms, great programs for kids, and solid weight room.
Staff is friendly and lots of them, really clean, great weight room and the childcare/activities are awesome!
Yesterday ot was 21 degrees outside, they closed at 4 and i was a little late to come pick up my son and he had told me the ladys at the front desk kicked him and the other children who didnt have a ride out when they looked at my son they told him you guys need to take this outside were closed
Great staff and facility has excellent exercise equipment.
Beautiful facility and very polite staff but members can have loud conversations when you’re trying to work out and it gets annoying.
I saw staff today at the park with kids and the staff were not paying attention to kids but were reading books instead of caring for the safety of the kids. Its funny how this isnt the only YMCA who has done this. These young adults are not being safe. Anyone could of taken a kid and they would not have known. Shame. I dont recommend YMCA for child care. Find someone who actually cares for your childs safety as much as you would.
It suked my friend got in trouble many times for doing nothing and every time it starts with this random kid who is a jerk.and every time I come here there is never enough basketballs and when we have a complain they never do any thing and people here are super over dramatic and when they say they will do something they lie and dont do it. And certain people cuss in the basketball courts and never get in trouble.
Staff are sooo friendly & helpful. My kids & I loves this place! So many activities for them to join & play. Love their hugh wellness center.
Definitely a good place. Clean, nice equipment, good facility. Relatively low cost. Hours are somewhat limited.
Not the best of the YMCAS in the area very crowded and People hear dont return weights or clean machines!! You could be watching something and someone sometimes would just change the channel and walk away!! Does not make sense!! So I would get up and change it back!! Warning if your kids are in babysitting and they are busy they could put you on a waiting list really!!! I also had my locker broke into and the Director at the time did nothing about it in 2012 3 credit cards stolen and cash!! They let Teens roam around and they are loud after school! A lot of times they arent even playing B-BALL... there are better choices and 95th St in Naperville is a little better but now there are so many choices of Gyms unlike what you would see 15 years ago in area..
Very clean facility. Staff members were very nice and professional.
Every time we come here for a birthday party, the rules change. Now, a child who doesnt take the swim test, can even play in the kiddie pool without a life jacket. Ridiculous. And the staff dont follow their own rules, wearing street shoes into the pool area.
Great aquatic center, attentive staff, excellent accommodations for parties! Overall wonderful experience.
Very friendly and nonjudgmental. Great for all ages.
Nice faciliy but policies are unclear & random. Ive had 3 experiences where staff tell you something one day and the next its not allowed or different. Was told my son could swim unattended at 8 years of age as long as I was in the facility. I get there & the front desk said no, it was 9 years old -- the swim director said 12. Was told he could lap swim with me but he couldnt. Was also told I could lap swim in an open lane while classes were going on and then told no the next week by someone else. Also, GUEST PASSES are EXPENSIVE. To have a non-member mom & child visit as your guest for the open swim they wanted $25.00!!! They gave me guess passes when I enrolled that happened to expire in June and they will give guest passes in January by raising the membership fee after 1/1/11 - but from June of 2010 to January of 2011 - you pay $25.00. I have been a member for YEARS and NEVER used a single guest pass.
Yes! The other reviewer who said their policies are all over the place is totally right! I wish I would have read it before Id entered into even just a monthly membership with my son! The place is so inconsistent with their policies its frustrating! One day I can use water wings with him because hes under three and then he has to wear a life vest another day. The most frustrating was when I went during an Open swim without their day care kids but even during that hour they had all thirty or so of their day care kids in there. And they do not advise you when these kids will not only be during their designated open swim but also the regular members open swim. So even if u follow their schedule there is no guarantee their day care wont be in there. I understand there being some busy days with a lot of kids especially in the summer but they say they designate a time where regular members can swim for an hour where theyre not there and you cant even get an hour. I decided to take my son in the middle part being young he doesnt llike being splashed or screamed at and one life guard had no problem. Im in my late twenties and im 59 but because my son has a life vest on I can not bring him in the 4-5 swim zone and have to squeeze in with their day care kids in the 4 section. What was most annoying is only one life guard had a problem with it and they couldnt even tell me themselves they had to go tell another lifeguard to do it and that poor dude clearly didnt want to or agree with it so I politely moved over but after ten minutes of just being splashed we just left. I should have followed the other members who saw the kids and just got out! The inconsistency is so annoying! Plus these lifeguards dont know how to approach toddlers. I understand I look like a young mother but im in my late twenties and scuba certified but I cant hold my kid in the 4ft section. my advice would be go to the park district over this. Theyre not a bunch of a kids running the show.
I swear its so annoying i can never go on the court because theres either classes on the courts or its raining they need to fix that and then it will be all packed on 1 court im gonna switch my member ship to lifetime
They try to sell personal training if you ask any questions about how to use some machine it’s greedy environment
Well run, very clean, staff very helpful.
Great clean family location... Alot of stuff to do
The place is very clean, they are very organized.

Amazing
They cant run a ymca
Friendly staff, clean facility! Great pool!
Staff is very rude almost kicked me out because I was doing my 1 hour run on a treadmill if your wanting to sign up because of the free day care or whatever la fitness is so much better
I would strongly suggest if you have more than one child stay away from this branch of the Y.M.C.A
