We love love love this black owned restaurant. They catered our wedding and the food was a huge hit. Our guests still talk about it. The cornbread and fried chicken is ridiculous...in the best way. Best mac n cheese in the city...Im from the south and am very picky. So that says a lot.

My wife was looking for a southern restaurant to try and and found South.Parking can be a little tough, but street spots may be available. Maybe leave some time to search around.For appetizers we had the skillet cornbread and fried green tomatoes. Cornbread was really good. Im not one to put butter on mine, but I used that butter!The fried green tomatoes were unique in that we probably wouldnt have necessarily each picked the dish. My wife doesnt really eat shrimp and Im not one for mayo. The tomatoes were topped with a rough chopped shrimp salad. I will say we both loved it. It was perfect with the tomatoes.For meals I had the shrimp and grits and my wife had the fried chicken. The sauce with the shrimp was perfect. Kind of a salty, but with a kick or tartness. Like Worcestershire was a main ingredient that stood out, but in a good way. Grits were creamy and loose. My wife had the fried chicken which was tasty and a pretty big portion.

Absolutely excellent services. And the staff members are very attentive and friendly as well a day well spent. Surely i will come once again.

Magnificent! The food is delicious and the atmosphere and ambiance are amazing. I was very impressed with South. If you have the opportunity to sit at the chefs counter do so. It was quite a treat to watch them prepare so many different dishes. That is grilled asparagus in the photo. Not only is it pretty, it was one of the best things I have ever tasted. I will definitely visit South again.

Everything was cooked well. Dishes were uncommon but not TOO uncommon. No squash-burger-with-goat-cheese or any of that kind of nonsense. Shared the jerk chicken and the fish with a friend. Chicken was a healthy portion and the fish plate was kind of spare but worth it if you like the taste of fish and not just the taste of the sauce people slop all over their perfectly fine fish.Im in town only for a couple of weeks but Ill likely stop by here again just to try the dishes and sides I didnt get this time. Really was good.

My wife and I chose to go here for dinner and a show. We ordered the Deviled eggs with shrimp and chips. The chips were very spicy hot! I ordered the Blue Crab Salad and was very satisfied. For dinner, we ordered the Short Rib which was very tender and tasty. My wife ordered the Southern Fried Chicken and it was very tasty. Our waitress Caitlin was very professional and patient with us. Afterwards, we moved to the Concert area and enjoyed the jazz Vibraphonist performance while enjoying the Sweet Potato Cheesecake. Definitely, a great place for Dinner and some Jazz!

The staff was Great! The collards & fried chicken really good! Catfish was plain no seasoning, da mashed potatoes & grits tasted puréed more so like jarred Gerber baby food horrible.and the MAC was okay..

The visit was nice. The food is no. Not for me. I had braised short rib for my main entree which turned out to be a hunk of beef with barbecue sauce. Corn bread was good. Chocolate bread pudding which was cold. It was restaurant week. Service was good. Band was nice. Cesar salad was weird a huge hunk lettuce with salad dressing and a long crouton on the side. We sat in main dining room in January cold in that area bring big scarf.

Delicious chicken and roasted vegetables. Did not care of the creamed collards. Nice decor, beautiful restroom and impeccable service.

Can’t give any complaints for this place. We made a reservation beforehand and it’s a good thing we did cause it was already filling up as soon as the place opened. The vibe is great with the decor and music. The staff was so friendly and they were constantly checking in to see if everything was good. We didn’t have to wait anymore than 15 mins to receive our drinks or food. And everything was DELICIOUS! Especially the corn bread and the smooth jazz feels cocktail. Highly recommend. And big thanks to our waiter, Guy. He was so sweet, funny, and made sure we had the best experience.

Cool small and intimate / casual spot. Not too old Hollywood and not too old Hollywood. Adrian was a huge plus. Great bartender and managed all the customers wants and needs without skipping a beat. Would love to see some live music and a larger happy hour menu.

First off Id like to say that the live jazz music at South is so soothing and complimentary to your meal. The service from the staff was just right even with a factor of being busy. The Lancaster roasted chicken served here hits the spot with the cornbread. The cornbread is insanely delicious. Besides the food though, South is perfect to meet new people. I actually met my girlfriend here and we have been dating for 6 months. We always go there together as it was the place where we met. The vibe is unmatchable and it is our favorite place to eat now. I first found this place by searching for a Jazz Bar on Google and they showed up first. I wasnt sure what to expect so I actually checked out this virtual tour I found on Google and their website which showed the inside of the venue, so I knew what to expect when I got there. I like sitting close to the performers so I knew from their tour where the best seating was so I could show up early and order before the show started. Jazz really attracts the best local talent and their staff really cares about your overall experience. We highly recommend this place, especially as a date spot.

They did an amazing job with the interior, and when you step into the restaurant the decor is creative, inviting and whimsical. If you are coming to see a jazz performance the acoustics are great, but the tables are very close together and we found ourselves frequently getting bumped by the wait staff.In hindsight I wish I ate elsewhere before the Jazz performance, because the food was overpriced and the service fell short. The food was dry and seemed to have been pre-prepared and not freshly made. The service was painfully slow. South has amazing potential if they focused more on the food preparation.

Great ambiance and great food. The decor is southern with a modern twist which brings a chic type of vibe. I didn’t get a chance to go to the jazz parlor due to it being a scheduled event there. However the overall experience was great, I only gave 4 instead of 5 because the seating is a little close together, other than that I’d highly recommend.

I wanted to enjoy this place so much since I have been to Relish and Warm Daddy’s and enjoyed both. I’ve been to SOUTH one other time for a small birthday celebration and enjoyed it but this time was disappointing. I was hosting a group happy hour and started trying to contact them a month in advance. I sent an email on the website. I called and left several messages with the morning host. I got the email address of the reservations manager (Ms. Sarnoor) and messaged her directly. I never got a response. On the day of I came early and spoke to the manager. She acknowledged that she had received my messages but stated she had been busy (for a whole month) and never got back to me. She said that after the tables seated in the lounge got up, we could have them and that we would be “well taken care of” This never happened. A table got up and two women who came in after I did were seated. I spoke to the host who told me that Ms. Sarnoor had never talked to her about giving us the next lounge tables. When we finally were seated the service was awful. We had a young lady with red hair who kept forgetting our food orders and confusing our drink orders. My group requested that next time we go back to the last venue or to somewhere new because the service was honestly terrible. I would try the main dining room with a dinner reservation but will never again hold an event there.Update: changing this review to 4 stars as a result of a fantastic brunch I had here today. I still had issues reaching the manager. When my party of 10 changed to 15 3 days before the reservation date I was told that a managers approval was needed to modify the reservation but I never received the promised call back. Brunch was amazing though. We had great food and service and the bar drinks were fabulous. I recommend the grits, pickled Bloody Mary and their signature Long Island iced tea

Love the atmosphere of this place. The live music is something that is truly missing around the Philadelphia area. If you get a chance to dine here you wont be disappointed. Although they put there own spin on southern classics, theres nothing like a southern meal that comforts the soul.

Sgood!!!! After talking about wanting to go here for what felt like foreverrr ... we finally made it, as you can tell by our obligatory what we ate pics. Our reservation was for 715 on a Sunday night and there was not any wait time, even though we arrived a little prior. We were offered a table as there were plenty available, but we still opted to sit at the counter. I feel like the counter is super underrated, but thats the best seat to us. To watch the chefs to their thing and the kitchen staff hustle and bustle, makes you appreciate the food and staff that much more. Its also where my hubbys keen eye caught items going out that were not on our menus. Note to future customer... there are 3 menus. Brunch, Bar and Dining. They also offer a dining package 2 or 3 course prefix. Our waitress was awesome and even let us browse the bar menu before ordering crawfish fritters to go, despite stuffing ourselves only moments before. Next time we go back, we plan to explore the bar menu, it sounds phenomenal and I wish thereui were some items offered on the dining menu Management is top notch, the staff was super cool, very attentive, our food was great and we had an amazing anniversary dinner. Thanks South and congrats on the Chopped Win.: Sweet potato cheesecake, jerk chicken and peach cocktail ... not pictured are the fritters we ate when we got home and the cornbread we devoured ... that cream cheese honey butter tho

My 1st time visit... The food was tasty, well seasoned and plenty of choices. Gerald was the most patient server, polite and came several time to check on the table. The 1st serving of Lamb was extremely over cooked and was replaced immediately upon request. The server during Happy hour was professional and quick in the service he provided.Will I return, yes, I had an enjoyable time. The Hostess may serve the business better by wearing a more professional attire. They represent the 1st face you see.

The artists Eric Darius and Gerald Veasley band were magnificent. The food was great and our server had lots of energy.Due to humidity outdoors, the temperature was Ethiopian. Nevertheless a good time was had.

Celebrated a special occasion here. The atmosphere inside and out was a good one. Lively, bright And fun. There was live Jazz being played in the restaurant, enjoyable. The staff, all welcoming adored in smiles. The food, seasoned well and tasty.

Never had fried green tomatoes like this. No salt or taste!Mac & Cheese- Too much cheese and not enough noodles. Not sure what the tomato sauce was for.We were so confused in what to get on the menu, so we played it safe and got chicken & waffles. The menu choice is horrible. I heard they changed the menu recently!The chicken was TERRIBLE! There were black cooks & chicken was still bad. The grease was dirty & old- the chicken reflected it. The waffle was good! No salt or taste!Not sure why they changed the menu but, they need to change it back. The food didn’t taste like NOLA AT ALL! NOLA WOULD BE MAD.........

Cool NOLA vibe and decor. Great cocktails and amazing staff. We werent able to stay for the live music, but really wish our schedule permitted. Bartender Chris took care of our every need and mixed up something special from fresh ingredients for me based on my mood and fancy.

Great location. Professional staff. Great live music. Very clean. Its small but cozy and intimate. Great drinks (Hilton Head Iced Tea) my food (Fried Chicken) great portion size but was a bit salty for my taste. Bread Board was great as well. I gave it three stars because of the salty dish. Otherwise it would have gotten five stars. I will give it a second try though.

I had been here a number or times and I have always enjoyed the food, the service and the atmosphere. Today, I wanted to order takeout but literally every app was giving me problems. I called the restaurant in between attempts and each time Michelle was super patient and helpful. I was determined not to be deterred, I had my mouth set on a meal from SOUTH tuhday! In my final attempt, the manager got on the phone to troubleshoot with me and she too was so patient and so helpful, she was able to figure out the issue and she helped me to navigate the app so that I could place my order. As an awesome thank you gesture, the owner threw in some extra treats. And when I say everything was good, E-VER-Y-Thing was goodt! it felt like thanksgiving in June. And I was especially thankful that the food came in foil pans so that everything can be reheated in the oven. LOVE!LOVE!LOVE! SOUTH

Such a nice place! Went here solo for a late night bite to eat - so good. Shout out the bartender that made me a nice rum punch; went down well with the lamb shanks & rice. Fast service too!

Everything was delicious, cooked perfectly, and seasoned nicely. The atmosphere is great and the staff were superb. I live in the South and sometimes when you travel north theyll be restaurants claiming to have southern cuisine that dont come close anywhere near close to it. Not the case here! Highly recommend!!

The food is excellent. I had the buttermilk fried chicken, drizzled with honey, turkey string beans, and candied yams. Price was $20. Drinks are potent. Its a small place, so call ahead to reserve a table, or sit at the chefs table which kinda looks like a bar. They were so busy, I canceled my dessert. Nice ambience.

Great atmosphere when you walk in, beautiful decor. The live Jazz band makes it even better, but a little disappointed with the food. The Chicken and Waffles -chicken was a little dry but not to the point where I couldnt eat it. Southern breakfast- Turkey bacon was dry, everything needed a little more salt and pepper or spice. Corn bread skillet was delicious but shouldve been served warmer. Server was nice.

We went for the Sunday Jazz Brunch and the food was fantastic, we ordered the salmon Benedict and chicken and waffles. Also ordered an Eves Garden, also excellent. And whats crazy is we were the only people in there, why the place wasnt packed is unjustifiable. Place is too good to be empty. Also, our server, Gerald, was fantastic.

I was hoping this place would be nice, it seemed nice. The jazz concert is separated from the dining area, the line runs into the dining area. It was so crowded and loud I could barely hear myself. The food was good. I would not recommend for a date

Great set featuring Kim Waters and Gerald Veasley and his band. Valentines treat with my hubby and a couple of great friends. We enjoyed the evening. Very intimate setting.

The food was absolutely amazing. We got the asparagus as well as a large gumbo type plate to share and it was more than enough. The building itself is gorgeous and a pleasure to look at. Have a variety of cocktails as well as specialty beers and sangria as well. Would definitely come back for another visit.

SOUTH has the best ambience of any restaurant in Philly, with cool shiplap boards and a huge sky light that almost feels more like a greenhouse. They nailed the New Orleans theme here, and the fresh flowers and plants are a nice touch. We had a few drinks at the bar made by bartender Dennis. It was a special Johnny Walker night, so he made a rusty nail that was fantastic, and an old fashioned made with Woodford reserve cherries that were to die for! My fiancée swears by the cornbread, which comes straight from the oven in a skillet. This is a must try to anyone venturing up North Broad looking for a classy, cozy spot to eat and listen to live jazz.

The Sunday brunch at South was great! Delicious food and good jazz.... a perfect combination! The service was excellent as well.

Nice hidden gem. Food is delicious. Southern with a nice twist. Do not leave without getting the cornbread. Nice music. The jazz bands offered in the parlor is a nice option. I love how you can enjoy a meal during the show (and not just a drink); you dont to rush to eat before or wait until after the show. Tuesdays is open jam night so youll get a mix of varying local jazz artists coming up to the stage to perform. Highly recommended.

A colleague was in town and I knew that they were a jazz lover as myself, so I suggested a place that I myself had not had the pleasure of visiting myself!Ive driven past this location numerous times and Ive read the reviews but still hadnt found an opportunity to go.Well I will tell you that I have been depriving myself of a great time! Anytime I try a new place I like to go on an off night so I can get the full experience! Man oh man! South did not disappoint!The seared scallops over black-eyed peas and rice.... what!?!?! The catfish....what!?!? I even had a beet salad with pickled blueberries (pickled, I am a virgin to pickled blueberries) with a mix of beets and golden beets over goat cheese.... FANTASTIC!This was this past Tuesday and I already have reservations for next Tuesday!!Dont meet me there, beat me there!!!You will not be disappointed!! I

The experience here was AMAZING! The entertainment was outstanding! The wait staff was courteous and met all of our needs in a timely manner. The food was delicious and the Sweet Potato Cheese Cake was heavenly. Loved everything about this place.

The staff and space is great . The food is terrible. I’m pretty sure it only gets good reviews because of the space and setting is great. The food looks great but taste bad. It’s not seasoned and the staff knows that the food isn’t the best. I’ve been two times to give them the benefit of the doubt but brunch and dinner both are not good.

Last time i visited here with my family for food and it was amazing experience. The place was very nice with beautiful infrastructure. The food was delicious and the services was also quick. I like the way they treat their customer. The price was also decent. So this place deserve 5 star.

Very good live jazz, and terrific southern/nola staples, in particular the fried chicken and corn bread. Also really like the atmosphere. My only complaint is the segregation of the two areas, as you can only hear the jazz well in the one half of the restaurant.

Wonderful food and service. Their skillet cornbread with honey butter is to die for, we got it for dessert! Reasonably priced. You wont be disappointed!

The food, ambience and table wait staff rate 5 stars...but the bar held the full rating allotment back. We just waited...and waited and waited for our drinks --this, even when the first seating had barely started. Ordered a glass of wine prior to the entree arrival and arrived just in time for coffee. That is a management issue. Meanwhile the pan fried cornbread is phenomenal and a great starter, enjoyed the superb cornmeal dusted catfish, and accompanied it with some of the best collard greens (they got some heat on em) on either side of the Mason Dixon. Looking forward to a next time, and will order those drinks and wines in twos during the water pour.

They have clearly purchased these reviews. The food isn’t good at all. The space and atmosphere is great. These are fake. When speaking to the staff it’s very common for dishes to be sent back with unsatisfied customers. The service is slow which I can deal with but it taste like they shaved cardboard on a plate and served it. Half our table sent the phone back ... the other half was just trying not to be “those guys”. The people on the side of us sent their stuff back also. This is the second time I’ve been and had the same experience.

I go here for the Tuesday night, open mic, jazz jam sessions. The house band is amazing and so are the singers and instrumentalists thats sit in with them. And they just happen to serve some of the best tasting, most interesting food in Philadelphia. And their cocktails are pretty snazzy too!

So Ill start by saying, I love their live shows. We just saw Steve Cole tonight and he was great! This is strictly for their food and service.For the price, Ive never thought the food was over the top, great. And, I feel like the for and the service is slightly regressing. First we ordered the cheese board, mussels, and corn bread. The corn bread and the mussels were great. Especially the mussels, they were in a curry sauce that was unlike anything I have had before. That was the hero of the night. The cheese board changed from what they had last time, for the worse. There were only 2 types of cheese and the rest were vegetables and a jam. They were good, however the previous cheese board was wayyyy better. Then, for my entree, I had the buttermilk fried chicken which was good. It came with a honey hot sauce that was banging (which I am beyond annoyed to see when I got home that it was not packed with the rest of my leftovers!!). Everybody elses food was good besides my sisters salmon that came out at least 10 mins after we all got our food, and she immediately realized was raw in the middle! They did however, takenitnoff the bill and gave her a complimentary one to go which made up for it.Besides that, our waiter wasnt great. She kept trying to take our food when there clearly was food still there. She managed to take our last piece of cornbread and never asked anyone if they still wanted it! Then she brought us the bill without asking if we wanted desert. I thought they didnt have it, until I saw other waiters walking desert over to their tables.Overall, great music and atmosphere, good food, sub par service!

Our first time visiting South and we had an awesome experience! We were seeing a concert at The Met which is just a couple blocks away. Our server asked us if we had plans to go and what time the concert started. They had our food out within 10 minutes. Totally impressed by the service, the atmosphere - and the food was outstanding. Definitely can’t wait to go back!

What a party! This place is hoppin. True Philadelphia jazz club. Its pricey but the band we saw tonight was hot! Didnt get any food, its a $25 ticket for the music and itll cost you $23 a couple pieces of fried chicken, so we stuck with water. Anyway, this is a great family friendly venue in a great location. Spent the evening laughing, singing, cheering, and tapping my foot.

Loved the atmosphere, drinks, and dessert. They need a better system for seating shows. They say first come first served for ticketed events. So, I arrived early and waited by the host stand. They crossed my name off of the list as if I had been seated, sat me close to the back, and offered no compensation.Other than that, it is an intimate performance venue that makes you feel part of the show.I will definitely visit again.

Awesome place and the food seemed to be prepared by a God it was so good! I had the beef short ribs, which were falling off the bones and banana cheese cake, which was a first and a new favorite! But my all time favorite is sweet potato cheesecake! Highly, highly recommended, actually if you are in Philly it is a must!

Visited this restaurant during restaurant week and the food was absolutely disgusting looked like slop on a plate. Spent over $150 with Jazz entertainment for warm tap water in a glass bottle with no ice and a cheap 3 course meal. Huge disappointment and waste of money!

Go here for the Live Music but eat before you go. The menu is too basic. Does not accommodate people with dietary restrictions. Highly advise looking at the menu before making a reservation.
