Great museum! Many unexpected items to see. One of the best collections Ive seen of ancient Roman, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern artifacts. The safety precautions taken made our trip more comfortable.
Brilliant new exhibitions, well presented. Excellent facilities and staff gave very clear explanations of the facilities and Covid precautions. Breastfeeding friendly!
Ab fab... absolutely fabulous! Not my first visit, Ive give for over 40 years. The Ancient Near East stuff is as good as any in the world... British Museum, Baghdad itself! Also Egyptian, Chinese, wonderful Native American stuff (broadly defined, to include all of Mexico/Central America.) For this kind of museum, Penns is as good as it gets. Always a pleasure.
Truly worth a visit. Much larger of a space and extensive of a collection than I initially expected. Had a wonderful time, and going on a weekday meant we had the entire museum to ourselves. Parking garage is pricey compared to the surrounding area. You can easily park at one of the lots a block away and spend a fraction.
I went here for my birthday and had an awesome time with my family. It was very interesting and informative. We really enjoyed all the exhibits especially the Egyptian and Native American exhibits. I would definitely visit again!
Penn Museum was a great experience. It had a lot of the art work that I really liked. Gift shop was great aa well, got some educational puzzles for my nieces & nephews. Enjoyed my visit to the gallery. Keep doing a good job for people to enjoy!
A great museum. Nice exhibits, nice atmosphere. Never hurried when we visit. A very courteous staff. We just became members- I highly recommend this museum.
This is a great museum. I enjoyed all of the exhibits especially the new Sphinx Gallery, the Egyptian gallery and the Mesoamerican gallery. I was on a docent tour of the Mesoamerican gallery with a Mexican tour guide. His tour was interesting and informative. I went on another tour of the Egyptian gallery with the head curator which was also great. Im looking forward to new renovation that theyre working on of the Egyptian gallery which is opening in a few years.
Excellent experience, well organized. Enjoyed the vast and diverse collection
Such a beautiful museum! Lots of trinkets, artwork, and pieces of everyday history to browse from many corners of the ancient and modern world. Worth a trip if youre in Philadelphia!
I loved it. I didnt expect that I would stay there for 2 hours. At lot to see! And I will definitely return.
Great museum with a ton of artifacts. If you’re interested in archeology, anthropology or ancient Egypt it’s a must see. We especially liked the koi pond in the front of the building lol
Collection from around the world largely acquired during colonialist times that should be returned or displayed for free for impoverished Philly residents. Much like the antiquities of the British Museum much of the collection was taken from countries and native peoples during times of their oppression. Although the museum is beautiful and the pieces are well maintained and cared for, they should be returned. However, if the exhibits were made free to Philadelphias poor communities of color then perhaps an education mission could be justified instead of using the proceeds to line Penns already overflowing (and under taxed) pockets.
The museum itself is beautiful, informative and surprisingly affordable. Although as said in another review I agree that some pieces have been questionably acquired I wish there was someone there to ask about the issues surrounding the pieces from countries like Egypt and such that have been wanting their antiquities back rightfully. Also in previous reviews I have to agree that the staff is terrible. They were incredibly rude while we visited. The greeter was not welcoming. The security officers were trying to usher everyone out 20 minutes before they were scheduled to close. No one there was friendly or helpful. No one was welcoming or thanked us for coming or asked if we needed help. As much as I loved walking through the exhibits the mental environment makes up for a lot of the visit and I cant say they made me want to come back.
Great museum. A lot of artifacts to look at. Never knew it was there until my daughter went for a school field trip.
Excellent Museum! Would recommend it to anyone!
AGI held their company holiday party at Penn Museum. We enjoyed a few cocktails while walking among the many displays and mummies. We than had a delicious buffet dinner and even went back for seconds. Dessert and coffee did us in and we were ready to mingle a little more with friends and co-workers before calling it a night. Definitely looking forward to another visit after 2019 when all the renovations and improvements are complete.
Awesome collection.
Really cool Museum with tons of artifacts from Egypt, Roman times, China. I was surprised how big it was, so big I missed an entire floor! The mummy section is a must see. I can’t believe how many mummies they have! This place rocks, and I got a ton of historical knowledge today!
Gorgeous, classic architecture housing a world class collection of Egyptian artifacts and much, much more, from many different cultures and periods. Helpful, friendly, incredibly informed docents and staff make visiting this museum even more of a delight. Go often!
There are a lot of fascinating exhibits on display, but several sections were closed for renovations. I think this museum is mostly geared toward college students and adults, but the newer sections do have some videos and hands-on displays that will keep kids engaged. Make sure to check out Ancient Egypt: From Discovery to Display early so you can watch archaeologists studying and preserving some of the artifacts.
Love all things history. This place was so much fun.
A little bit disappointing...Good collections of ancient era but it was not convenient to enjoy exhibitions. It is not clear to me whether the reason is some section is on the construction or the designs of movement pathes.
I came here because it was listed in a book called “100 Things to do in Philadelphia Before you Die”. To say the least I was not disappointed. Probably outside of Cairo and Turin, Italy, they might have the best Egyptian artifacts, some 4,400 years old that are in amazing condition. Sometimes I don’t like it when we take ancient materials from other countries but they are doing an unbelievable job of maintaining the condition of these items with state of the art environmental equipment.Another highlight is they have 20-30 ancient Chinese items from various dynasties. The highlight were the Fu Lions and the various Buddha statues.I highly recommend visiting the Penn Museum, especially if you like mummies, and it is only $15 for adults.
Narley totem poles.... but i didnt see much else 2nd floor appeared to be just empty classrooms i didnt breally tour or try went in for atm an clean restroom
Take your kids!! Its not big but it has everything you need. Mummies. Check! Ancient Greek. Check! Roman! Japan & China! Middle East! Egyptian section is impressive. Its right at the edge of Penn Campus near Franklin Field (33rd and South). Kids enter for free! Take them before they grow up and think of museum as a place full of old stuffs.
Nice British style exterior architecture. HVAC did not work on the 2nd floor and I didnt manage to see 20% of the exhibits and they wont let me in again to see the rest for free. (most probably). The cashier did not give me the ticket.
A pool of great knowledge.. you will dive into the history of humans and how they managed to evolve.Main attraction was mummies display and they are preserved.
So many great exhibits! Lots of detail and information. They also host weddings here. A really wonderful place.
As of October 2019, the place is under a major renovation. Many parts are closed. Construction dust is visible all around. It is extremely loud and not exactly enjoyable.Wait until the construction is completed before you decided to go.
Have seen your you tube channel and a impressed kindly link me to help on audio to explain the scenes in a more detailed and accurate way making meaning especially from east Africa- KENYA .i will be much obliged to helpreach me at [email protected]
Great museum. My favorite in Philly hands down. If you love archeology and history this is the place for you!
One of my favorite places on Earth. Get ready for a visit filled with knowledge and fun. Theres a parking garage on the premises so you dont have to walk very far or worry about your vehicle. Check the website for admission costs and special events. You can take your time and stroll among the artifacts. Lots of associates on hand to help make your visit even more special. Theres also a gift shop. Have an amazing time!
This place has improved a ton from a exhibit design perspective. Lots of educational and fun interactive elements, especially in the Americas area. You can construct words from Mayan hieroglyphics and bring ancient relief carvings to life with light displays. I loved it. Even my 20-month-old loved it!
Well worth a visit. Soaked in a richly cultured atmosphere. The museum contains quite a few sections.
This has to be the greatest anthropology museum Ive ever visited. This museum has something from just about every major ancient civilization you can think of, it took us about 3 hours to look at everything. I would definitely recommend this museum to anyone visiting the area.
Penns best kept secret. So impressive and wonderful exhibits. Looking forward to the next trip!
Great museum of Anthropology and Archaeology! You can go to just look at pretty historical objects, or you can choose to learn more about the artifacts inside the museum through lectures and tours provided! I also like sketching the objects inside the museum when I visit. I hope to go when they reopen after Covid-19!
What an unexpected gem of a surprise! Just loved the Penn Museum. So many incredible artifacts! Don’t miss this! Parking was very difficult to find though. Ended up in a parking garage and $22.00 later... that was the only downside.. despite parking...highly recommend!! ️
This museum is AMAZING. We came all the way from southeastern Tennessee to visit it. The incredible breadth and diversity of their exhibits is so refreshing, as was the service and knowledge from every member of the staff. We came specifically for their section on the Middle East and we were NOT disappointed! We spent the whole day wandering through that single exhibit. We can’t wait to come back!
Nice compact museum with a collection specializing in ancient civilizations especially Middle East. Love the open window for the artifacts restoration lab, bit only open a few hours a day where you can talk and ask questions with one of the restoration specialists. The atrium domed room is awesome! A beautiful space with nice Asian artifacts. There were a number of exhibits closed for a while to renovate, update, and protect artifacts from the hospital wing construction next door. You can hear and feel a bit of the construction work. The original museum was constructed in1899 and recently majorly renovated, but navigation if you have some mobility issues can be challenging with the second floor center blocked which made accessibility to elevator having you go out to the group entrance, but its doable. As the helpful staff. While nice, might want to wait for renovations to get done for a even better museum. First choice should be the Philadelphia Museum of Art and if you have time this is a nice place.
The experience was ok, security was rushing us out 15-20mins before closing. Closing time is 5pm not 4:40pm.
I want to highlight the excellent volunteer who was working in the area with the mummies on the afternoon of Friday, 1/31/20. We arrived when she was packing up her cart for the day. She took the time to spend over a half hour explaining to my niece all about the canopic jars. And even gave her a great acronym as to how to remember what goes in each jar. She said she thought of a window sill. SILL - stomach, intestines, lung and liver. My 14-year-old niece had a wonderful time exploring your museum thanks to the kindness of that volunteer!
I could spend lifetimes in here. To gaze at pieces of the past up close and think about the brutality, stoicism and artistic brilliance of ancient people is a staggering experience. Peering ever so slightly into the mysterious void of the ancient world would be impossible if it werent for places like this. I love this place.
A hidden gem. The outside water feature is picturesque. When I went they had an interesting exhibit about African countries. The exhibit was interact and perfect for kids (2+ years old) as they engaged the 5 senses. I would call this place family friendly. They also have a decent cafeteria if you get hungry.
A fantastic way to spend the afternoon with the family --- the museum remodel is amazing!
Big place and very nice but hard to get to
This is a great museum, not so big that you get lost in it but too big to see everything in one trip. They have pieces from many cultures across space and time. I especially loved the contemporary art in the Native American exhibit. They are making an effort to be transparent about how works came to be in Philadelphia, who stole them and the routes they took. Ill happily go there on a rainy day to wander around, transport myself through time, and be inspired to make something.
Cant believe a university museum is able to have such a huge and diverse collection. The point is you dont need to pay if vosoting after 4:30PM!!!
It reminds me about the history of China, where my parents born, and I remembered about those animals that I learned it while We are at the trip.
An excellent museum housing some rare and special artifacts. The Egyptian section is particularly enriched. I missed South Asian artifacts..
Large collection of artifacts housed in beautiful setting. Loved the social exhibits and the pop-up exhibit we just made in time.
Beautiful museum, laid out well so you can get through pretty quickly. Can host events (weddings, parties) etc right in the exhibits.
It has been a long time since I visited the Penn Museum - I wish I had come back sooner. The setting is bright and clean, and the displays are well documented and very informative. The items are first class - one of the top notch archaeological collections in the U.S.Plus, we were fortunate to come across the ArtifactLab during one of the two times each day when a conservator talks about the restoration work she or he is currently performing. On our day, we observed an Egyptian mummy being conserved, and were able to ask all kind of questions. The museum also has a nice cafe to grab a bite to eat or something to drink.
Lots to see through the 3 floor exhibit. small cafe area. no food or drink allowed in exhibit areas. give yourself ample time to really enjoy each section.parking is a challenge ...on site $20...meter parking $0.25 per 8 minutes
Where can you go in the city to find mummies and Egyptian artifacts? Yup the museum at Penn. Here you can go from Israel to Jamaica and to Egypt back to the Bahamas in only a few hours. If you have not been in a while go soon as it will be going through some construction in the upcoming months that will last a pretty long time. Im excited to see the changes and cant wait for the new exhibit.
Fabulous Museum, Intriguing CollectionIm so glad I made the choice to visit Penn Museum. The Egyptian collection alone was well worth it. The archeological exhibits are awe-inspiring. The atmosphere is magical. I also enjoyed the Canaan exhibits immensely. The China and Japan area is interesting too. Very impressed.
A wonderful walk back in time. Great place for family and friends.
Very detailed information. Staff very pleasant and helpful. The food in the cafeteria was excellent.
Whats not to love, fun & interesting are words that forms I my head when looking back in retrospect, each exhibit keeping you engaged in a fascinating trance to navigate each room. Stay was super friendly, interesting gift store with a small selection of artifacts to remember your visit. There is also a place to sit back, grab a bite with friends & family or just relax next to the pond at the entrance while watching the koi fish swim effortless back & fort.
Outstanding and amazing how much stuff and info.
Fun learning ..nice guide TV that took us through..educational
A hidden gem inside Philadelphia located across from the UPenn Franklin Field. One of the best collections of Egyptian artifacts in the world and collections from everywhere else. Etruscan, Chinese, Middle East, Native American etc. You could spend a whole day here and not see everything. Make sure to see what collections may be closed due to constant remodeling.
Beautiful building and grounds not to mention all the exhibits. We went when they were still remodeling so several things were closed but it was still wonderful. Looking forward to going back now that they have finished the remodel!
My favorite museum in the city and top three on the east coast. Beautiful inside and out and every exhibit is arranged in a way that allows the viewer to set their own pace. There are activities throughout the day for patrons of all ages including spotlights of specific pieces that are informative enough for the knowledgeable and both fun and short enough to keep the kids attention as well. With onsite parking and eating you dont have any other concerns for your visit. I wish I could visit weekly.
Loved this museum. Its one of the hidden hems in Philadelphia. Many people go to the art museum or independence hall but didnt pass up Penn. A trove of history.
Great early kingdom Egyptian exhibits, that probably need to be returned to Egypt at some point.
The Penn Museum is an amazing place, and the two new exhibits were absolutely wonderful! Its a great place to go to learn, to hang out with friends, or to draw. There are so many interesting artifacts and the plaques are very education. And military and depends get in free! Also, very accessable.
Very well maintained and curated museum. Lots of interesting displays. You can easily spend three or four hours there. They have a small cafeteria and allot of restrooms scattered thru out. Make sure to make it over to the Egypt and Asia areas, some neat history there.Suggest parking at the west ramp, was fairly quiet even on a Saturday. Occasional Groupon tickets can be found also.
This is a good university museum. Its Egyptian collection is world class.
I have to give it 4 stars only because it wasnt air conditioned. However, luckily they are as we speak in the process of remediating that. My party ended up rushing through Africa and simply passing through North America. But alas another trip there is excitingly inevitable. I had the most fabulous time. I was celebrating the world and my city of Philadelphia. And all of this while parts of both Egypt and China were blocked off for renovation. Truly world class.
The first thing that catches your eye is the enormous Sphinx just beyond the welcome desk. Amazing!
Its an anthropological museum with displays of ancient cultures and artifacts. Ive gotten spoiled with modern museums having interactive and hands-on displays, so I found it less engaging than Id hoped. Its in a wonderful old building that is worth seeing by itself, though.
By far one of my most favorite museums. So many artifacts from all over the world and different time periods. It is not a one stop shop museum, plan to spend many hours to really enjoy and see everything.
New renovations and interactive exhibits look great. Great place to take the kids to learn or first date. Cafe food was delicious and fairly priced.
The East Asian exhibit was really cool but the mummies were even better! There were perfectly preserved mummies, wrapped in nothing but their dried skin. This museum is a hidden treasure.
I really enjoy the events hosted here. Its local to everything as well. The museum itself has some interesting pieces. It has a different feel from other museums to me. Its more intimate and exclusive but welcoming.
If you have the opportunity to take one of their night tours, please do! Hands down one of the coolest museum tours Ive ever experienced; the monsters and myths tour is AMAZING.
Sprawling Victorian archaeology and anthropology museum on Penn Campus in University City. Known for giant rotunda with Asian arts, “The Sphinx room”, & Ancient Europe and Americas galleries. New Middle Eastern galleries a standout. Many kids programs.
Delightful history museum with many unique displays (actual mummified corpses!) I havent seen anywhere else. A wide variety of cultures from around the world are shown, including a very respectful exhibit on Native Americans and thier struggles, including ones today.Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, Etruscan... if ancient cultures interest you (and youre not too squeamish for actual mummified corpses on display), this is a very nice museum to tour.Only complaint is that many large groups of students frequent the museum from the nearby universities, so exhibits may be loud or crowded. Attend when not on a tight schedule so you can wander around and wait for rooms to clear up.
The Penn Museum offers some interesting and unique programming. My teen is in their teen ambassador program. I appreciate that the museum has a program that engages this age group.
The place is great. Great food. I really enjoyed the Egyt presentation.
Walked into the Asia/Egypt near sunset and was blown away....beautiful!
A true hidden gem! Wonderful Egyptian artifacts, and the China section was a great compliment to the Terracotta Warriors exhibit wed seen the day before at the Franklin Institute. I highly recommend it!
A hidden gem! Full of history and very well curated and informative! We were impressed with the conservation wing.Definitely a must if you like history.
Museum was great! Lack of air conditioning was awful!! I visited in July and the Museum was sweltering inside. I could not believe that a wealthy institution like Penn would subject paying patrons to this misery. The museums collections were amazing but I left after only 45 mins due to intolerable temperature.
Good and clean
Fun area to visit and learn. The section on middle east is really detailed. The Egyptian section, and especially the preserved mummies, definitely warrants a visit.
This was a gr8 place to visit with the various exhibits and many artifacts. The best part for my family was viewing a real mummy with the scientist who was about to retrieve a DNA sample....has dropping. We loved it! Go Explore!
Fascinating collection including an amazing Egyptian selection
The artifacts are beautiful and beautifully preserved. We even got the opportunity to speak with a sweet woman working in the artifacts lab. She talked to the kids about preservation and showed them the mummies she was working on.A big problem was the lack of air conditioning in parts of the building. It wasnt due to exhibits. It either didnt exist in some sections, or was broken in others. In addition, the exhibit layout did not flow. It was choppy and had us doubling back to find missed sections.
My favorite museum to visit in Philadelphia. They have a wonderful collection of artifacts spanning many cultures and civilizations from across the globe. I’ve been here multiple times and their collection and attention to care and the actual history will keep me coming back to check out new exhibits and events. Wonderful place!
A really nice Mueseum on Penn’s campus with multiple exhibits of different countries artifacts. All the artifacts were really beautiful and unique. Seems like they’re doing a lot of construction to make new exhibits so I’m excited to see what will come next.
Really cool. Very affordable. A lot bigger than I was expecting
Best museum outside of Manhattan as far as Im concerned! Awesome Egyptian exhibit! Always a good time! They host lots of exciting and authentic cultural events there. (On four different times when we went to visit out of the blue, we walked into some amazing events involving song, dance, vendors and hands on activities.) It is close to both the train station as well as parking garages. Nice gift shop as well. A must see in Philadelphia!
A beautiful museum, with architectural features to admire alongside the exhibits. Very friendly staff, interesting dioramas and a unique collection make this a place not to miss. When renting the museum for parties, they go all out, I highly recommend The Penn Museum.
So much to see! Loved the native American room!
Visited on Sunday for the first time. I had a great time. There are three levels to visit and you get to see mummies. Lots of interesting things to see and learn about. If you like history and culture you will enjoy the museum. The fee is $15 per person.
