As an amateur banjo player Im probably a tad biased in my review, but this was truly one of the best museums I have visited in a long, long time.The facility is in excellent shape, the quality of the displays is top-notch, and the narrative they present of the banjo (from African origins to the present) is both honest and tastefully presented. The receptionist was very welcoming and made us feel right at home. Even my wife (who is NOT a banjo player) enjoyed her visit. I feel confident saying this is the finest collection of banjos one can ever hope to see under one roof. We would absolutely return if we lived closer.

I recommend this hidden gem to anyone who loves music and appreciates hand made beauty. I was amazed at how detailed and beautiful the banjos on display were. I had no idea the history behind the banjo, but I do now! They have extensive info and visuals on hand! Even if you have never played a banjo, you will come away with an intense appreciation for the instrument. The staff were wonderful, and one even gave us a live story and performance right infrount of his office. Dont miss out on this place if you are in Oklahoma City!

Very nice museum, it’s well kept and with a nice staff. Myself and my girlfriend enjoyed even though neither of us are banjo players. It’s a trip through American history through different eyes.

Quite an informative place if youre interested in the history of banjos and get to see some of the really ornate ones I was hoping for more banjo music being played but that didnt work out except for recordings

Many nice bangos and other things on exhibit - a lot of very interesting history. also, there was a very good video about the banjo and its history in the US that was very informative

One of the best museums I have ever visited. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by a friendly staff who make you feel very welcome. The collection of banjos is amazing, there are costumes and other concert related items on display as well. They have a cute little gift shop with a variety of items at reasonable prices. A hidden gem right in bricktown. I highly recommend visiting here

Fun history and some neat banjos. Their traveling exhibits were fun. I wish they had more ways to hear and see famous performances listen to examples etc. There were a few QR codes but not every one has a phone QR code reader or knows how to use one.

A lot of fun. Great history. Amazing craftsmanship on some of these banjos. We had fun timing through there. Military discount! Pretty good gift shop where you can even buy a quality starter banjo and books. Great location near Bricktown. Definitely recommended.

Took advantage of the Smithsonian Day to finally see this well-presented display. We are not musicians, but it was enlightening to see the history and development of the instrument showing its changing role in American culture. So many of the banjos displayed are works of art in themselves. Beautiful. The text actually enriches the understanding of what is seen and the videos and sound bring the museum to life. Glad we got to see the Jim Henson exhibit and the Jim Bollman Collection, as well. Just an overall great afternoon.

It was a neat hidden gem, I didnt know how beautiful banjos could be. Its a nice way to kill 30-45 minutes in Bricktown.

It is the only one of its kind. The experience provided was amazing and the information so kindly given by the wise gentleman at the front was mind blowing. I will never forget my visit to this very wonderful and special place.The interactive information presented was incredibly well done. The expansive timeline of artifacts and the vast number of pieces housed here is stunning. My perception regarding the origins of this instrument were completely shattered as was my limited understanding of its complexities and reach through cultures and time.

Helpful and friendly staff that are clearly excited to be there. Informative displays that cover the history of the material. A very broad coverage of Jim Henson as he relates to banjos and his works in general that is a real treat and a large collection of banjos on the upper floor from all eras. They also offer classes to teach banjo to interested parties as well as the opportunity to play on some display banjos for the experience. A fun if short lived experience.

I was the first time to Oklahoma City and wanted to check out the local attractions and top TripAdvisor Things to Do. Ive never been to a Banjo museum so thought I would give it a shot! Stopped by and loved it. The lady who took our money for the tickets was awesome; always had a smile and gave us a quick overview of the museum when we stated we had not been there before. We then walked through the initial part which was a self-guided tour, and then saw two floors of 100+ banjos, with each banjo having its own unique story. If youre a big time Banjo enthusiast, you could spend 3+ hours there; but for the average person who has a peak of curiosity, 1 to 1-1/2 hours should be enough time

This is an excellent place to visit for any banjo or bluegrass enthusiast. I especially liked the displays of early banjos and the history of the banjo.

The most amazing place to learn about the history of the 4 and 5 string banjo. They have a voluminous collection of all kinds of historical banjos. Exceptionally well done!! 5 stars well deserved for any current or potential banjo player!!

Super awesome museum. Im not a banjo player but I thought it was fantastic. They have a fantastic collection and the Jim Henson section was fantastic and the Celtic players upstairs very extremely talented. I would definitely love to go back!

This museum was interesting and well laid out. At the beginning, they have a quick history of the banjo and then you get to see a huge collection of banjos. My 11 and 13 year old boys quickly lost interest. Not a place for young ones but it was a nice change from the restaurants and few shops in Bricktown. My favorite part was the Philadelphia Mummers section.

Such a fun place tucked into downtown OKC. Great way to spend an hour.

The Museum was fantastic. If you are a fan of bluegrass, country and western, Americana, or folk music, it is a must stop. The volunteer staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

It is a unique niche in Bricktown that tells a story about an instrument we hear but know little about.

I visited here during my trip to OKC. I don’t play the banjo, or know much about it’s history. But this museum was so cool! It takes you on a full tour of the banjo’s history, up to modern day with people like Jim Henson and Steve Martin, etc. I loved that they let you play real banjos at the end, with video lessons. I actually learned a little song and I was only there for maybe 10 mins.

Went here when visiting OKC and they were having a 1/2 off special so my wife & I got in for only $8. It was pretty interesting seeing the history of banjos as well as the different types. The person at the desk was very helpful. The best part was getting to play the banjo. I was horrible, but it was fun to try it.

My teenage daughter who is into music really liked it.Banjo lessons Saturday at 2 Pm, reservations required (Banjo provided).Do not forget to go upstairs if you like Roy Clark.

A truly amazing museum! And a huge collection of really beautiful banjos. It was quite an experience.

In response to John Johnsons review, he arrived in the final half hour of business on a day when the museum was offering free admission as a promotion. Our stated policy is that the last guest is admitted 45 minutes prior to the posted closing time. When he entered the museum Mr. Johnson was advised that the museum had already admitted its last guest of the day and would be closing as soon as the earlier guests left. He assured the hostess that he would take a quick look around and leave when we were ready to close. To fully experience the American Banjo Museum, guests should plan at least an hour visit to take in all the exhibits. If youre making a special trip to visit us, please plan accordingly and be aware of our late in the day admissions policy.

Great Museum. Banjo learning lab for aspiring players, great history, knowledgeable staff, not very expensive ( about 7 bucks for an adult)

Definitely a good part of History. So many banjos, so much art in them.

If you are a music lover, banjo fan or Steve Martin fan this is a Must See. If you are none of those like me and just have an hour to kill its still a good option. Its gift shop carries Oklahoma themed tourist knickknacks in addition to banjo themed ones. Located in the brick town area there a lot of places to grab a bite within walking distance.

This place is awesome. This is more art museum than music museum. The banjos on display are simply amazing. The 1890s through 1930s banjos remind you of the great craftsmen and artists of those times that simply dont exist in our current low-cost outsourced world. So great that this is in OKC.

The museum provides thorough, rich information on the history of the banjo. But the real reason to go is to see the incredible collection of some of the most intricately designed banjos throughout history! Many of the pieces, especially from the 20s and 30s, are quite a sight to behold with the beautifully designed necks, resonators and pots!

This is an awesome museum even if you arent that into banjos or banjo music. There are a lot of really cool banjos in here, and also some Steve Martin memorabilia.

Interesting little collection! It will only take an hour or two to see It, but the history of the instrument is covered well. And so many of the instruments they have are just amazing! So much decorative work!

We enjoyed our visit here with family from out of state. The exhibits were well laid out and very interesting, including the Kingston Trio exhibit, held over until September 2014. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and we would have stayed longer if our young children were not ready to leave. We would love to come back and plan an event in their Shakeys room on the second floor. Great location with parking nearby.

This is a must see venue. The largest selection of every style of the only instrument developed in our country!!!

My family came to see the Kermit the Frog display and it did not disappoint.If you are into banjos then this would be your Mecca. It has a huge collection and lots of historical information.

The kids and I visited this museum the first time as a homeschool field trip. Today we visited again, this time for Learn to Pick a Tune with Lucas. What a great experience and we learned a lot about the banjo! Great staff and impressive museum.

Fun little museum with some very interesting exhibits. If you are a fan of bluegrass or bank is this is a must see. Even if you arent it is still a fun trip.

The museum has very well thought out displays and does a very good job of taking you through the history of the instrument and its variations. Its not a place that will necessarily catch your eye when walking by, but it is well worth your time to stop in!

My visit to this museum was a very dissatisfying experience. After making a special trip, I was a quarter of the way through the tour when the management decided to close a half hour early and kicked me out. He didnt even offer a rain check ticket. Given these business ethics, I wouldnt recommend this museum, regardless of what is in it.
