Finding the James Garner statue was a surprise as I drive through Norman, Oklahoma. A former prairie town and native American homeland it is now home to the University of Oklahoma. It was good to see them honor a native son who is part Native American and a Korean War hero. He received two purple hearts and went on to make a career in Hollywood as an actor. He brought us some shows such as the Rockford Files and Maverick. He was in numerous movies including The Great Escape.

Very nicely done, nice park area. Benches to sit and rest, well shaded. Easy parking, just watch for trains.

I had no idea that James Garner was a Sooner. I enjoy his acting skills. He seems so natural in any of his parts.

This guy. Not only was he an incredible actor, he was also a producer and voice artist. He was the epitome of class. With a nickname Slick you have to be.He was born Apr 7 1928 and passed on Jul 19 2014. He dropped out of high school when he was 16 and joined the Merchant Marines and later the Army. He fought in WW11 and the Korean War where he received 2 purple hearts. He is probably best known for his roles as Mavrick and The Rockford Files. He received an Oscar Nomination in 1985 for Best Actor in Murphys Romance. From 1967-1969 he was the owner of a racing team American International Racers.August 28 1963, he was present (in third row) to hear Dr. Martin Luther Kings famous speech I Have A Dream.Huge supporter of OU ( University of Oklahoma) in 1995 he was honored with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. All in all this man lived one helluva life and his statue is definitely worth visiting if you are ever in Norman in the historic downtown area.

Beautifully quaint statue in the middle of town just past the railroad tracks. Make sure you find parking BEFORE the tracks or you’ll be circling the block to find something. It’s a one way street and often congested but the area is pretty great and lots of little shops and diners.
