I love this beautiful old church. The grounds are so beautifully kept; it is a lovely place to sit and read a book. It is the sole remaining colonial-era building which has survived the various wars that Norfolk has witnessed. There is even a revolutionary war cannonball lodged in one of the exterior walls!
St. Paul’s Catholic Church was first built in 1813 by French and Irish immigrants. It was the first Catholic congregation in Portsmouth. This is actually the congregations’ fifth building (once the membership expanded and twice the previous churches were burned down). St. Paul’s was built of shaved granite in 1905 and features many fine stone carvings. It is an elaborate example of a compact Gothic Revival cruciform plan church featuring tracery windows of cathedral glass, pointed Gothic arches, flying buttresses and a steep roof. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. The relief of Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemene above the door is magnificent. Above the relief of Christ, you will see St. Paul. If you keep looking up, you will see the 200 foot tall copper-clad steeple. A beautiful church, historical setting and calm.
My son and I stopped by for a history assignment and the parishioners were so extremely helpful, nice, and welcoming. If I lived closer, their inviting spirit would def give me reason to attend.Thank you to the gentlemen who were restoring tombstones, you were awesome!
Every time I go downtown I have to stop and enjoy a piece of history. It is a piece of my heart.
Church building looks nice from the outside. The building is very old and includes a cemetery which is free and open to the public. The most interesting part of the yard is the cannonball embedded in its wall, which as the story goes was fired in 1776 by the British during the Revolutionary War, striking the wall of the church after being fired from one of the ships at sea.
Wonderfully warm and friendly environment. Gorgeous building and grounds. Historical site.
Its a church. I am not Christian; i only went there for a lunch they treated my workplace to. They are nice peoplr, i guess.
Culturally and historically significant American landmark that is not only worth checking out for its historicity, but also for its role as a church.
If you want a worship experience surrounded in history, this place is for you.
Neat little historic place
Has three weekly 12 step recovery meetings at thier facility. One alanon meeting and two AA meetings all at noon. Great ministry to the community by providing a place for these groups ti meet.
A good place of worship and a great place to visit
Fabulous church, a must see Norfolk landmark
Historic Episcopal church with friendly and welcoming congregation
Great AA meetings every Tuesday and Thursday called Ball in the Wall
Interesting architectural and historic location. Browse the headstones in the graveyard and amble over to the infamous cannonball stuck in the southeastern wall (fired by British Colonial Governor Lord Dunmore on Jan. 1, 1776 when trying to destroy Norfolk). Look inside for a colonial gem.
The history behind the cannonball was crazy to learn about, had to check it out for myself.
Very nice historic church
