The Skirball Center at NYU holds a beautiful auditorium (with a bar if youre so inclined). The seats are comfortable, the views of offer stage are great from pretty much anywhere, and the sound quality is great. My experience here is mostly with the annual World Science Festival, which I highly recommend you attend!
We watched a dance performance by a group from Europe and the members were mostly Belgian and mature looking but very agile. The cello musician was French. I didnt read anything about the show nor the material. I just saw it because I love anything by Bach. And I wasnt disappointed. It was fantastic, to say the least.I didnt realize the stage was really that big and wide, since the last time I was here was years ago to watch a play on an entrapped miner, which was not a disappointment too.I am sure I will be back if theres another show worth watching according to my tastes and preferences. It has been worth venturing here especially when you have a lot of options to choose from in NYC when you like live performances.
This modern theater is a great place to see live acts. The view of the stage was great and they have a very good sound system. It is extremely well kept, has a very polite and helpful staff. They do have a bar area that has alcohol which you can not bring in the theater but bottled water is allowed in. They also have gender neutral restrooms which is a great move forward but for some it could be uncomfortable. No one honestly seemed to care at the show I attended.
Very nice yet very simple theater behind Washington Square Park, where I saw Ailey II this year, just after my 30th birthday. Amazingly, I was able to drive and find free street parking spots that were available. As I was walking, two ladies were around, trying to find supporters for their blood drive - true college/community atmosphere but it was still quiet and calm outside on this Saturday afternoon. Inside, the place was packed without feeling overcrowded. I appreciated that I had elbow room in my seat.
Google maps asked me to rate this but I only go there for my biology lectures its fine I guess good acoustics
I saw the Concert for Peace here last weekend and previous to that have been to a Bikram yoga competition here as well. It is a very nice venue spacious and good acoustics and very clean. They have restrooms downstairs and an area outside of them where vendors can set up tables to sell merchandise. It’s also very easy to commute to this theatre, I highly recommend it.
A nice little theater building that hosts talks, theater, dance performances and more. The deals for NYU students are amazing and the program does contain true gems.
The space was open. Lots of windows so lots of natural light. The interior was do nicely designed too. The acoustics in the hall were great.
Great acoustics, nice atmosphere, polite ushers, beautiful place. Went to hear the Songs of the Soul Concert dedicated to the music of Sri Chinmoy, a Bengali born composer of amazing spiritual music. Really enjoyed in the sounds of various instruments and beautiful voices. Only one thing which is good to know, the hall is under ground - meaning, no cell phone signal while you are down there. If you are meeting someone and they are running late, you will need to go up all the way to the entrance to speak with or text to them.
Whats not to love about this place? The space is large, accommodating, and as good as, or better, than some Broadway theaters. Their programming is excellent as Ive yet to see a bad performance here. Even the unknown shows, like the one currently running, Hot Brown Honey, are always absolute gems. From a location standpoint its near public transportation and across from Washington Square Park, which makes for great strolls before or after the show. There are also tons of nearby places for pre or post-show dining. Inside, the seats are spacious and accessible, and the bathrooms are spotless. Their lighting and stage effects rival anything on the Great White Way and they can do any production justice. Best of all, the staff are always helpful and friendly, from the ticket booth people to the ushers. Like I said, whats not to love?
Havent been lucky with the shows... Absolutely hated the last three I saw here. I am tho very excited with 2020 program and already bought tickets for two performances, well see!...
Great play
Interesting venue, but stairs are scary.
I saw the Bloodlines by the Stephen Petronio Company and it was breathtaking. The choreography, the music, the costumes and the performance was outstanding. The staff was helpful and kind. We had the best seats available. It’s conveniently placed next to a train station.
Beutiful place to enjpy your events.
Truly a wonderful resource for the Washington Square community! This center within the NYU Kimmel Student Union complex is ideal for a variety of events: film, theater, lecture hall, exhibits and so forth. We have attended more than a dozen events here and have nothing but praise for the venue and its staff. Past years artistic direction is just complete first-class. We urge more of the same for joy and delight all around...
Seats were excellent, parking a short distance away
Had my daughters graduation here wonderful place great seating
Awesome venue. I saw Daniel Tosh live at this venue. Regardless of where you are sitting in the venue you are almost guaranteed to get a great view of what is happening in stage. It’s a great location as well very easy to access and get to via the train.
Great performance venue with an awesome, well-curated alternative program that spans all genders, ethnicities, nations, and many experimental art forms. Its refreshing to have this kind of avant cultural option in NYC.
I had a beautiful experience at the Center during the conference. Gorgeous plush red palace that was welcoming and clean. Thank you.
Saw an NT Live here. Great theater and friendly staffs.
Very nice theater at NYU. We went there in June of 2019 to see a National Dance Institute performance.
The theater is nice (the show wasnt great). There is plenty of bathrooms (gender neutral) and they are located near the entrance to the theater which is helpful. There is no WiFi anywhere in the center.
Was super excited for my first Skirball experience. I have been following them for a couple years and have always been super interested in their programming. Finally made the leap and splurged on a couple tickets for Five Easy Pieces. I was so disappointed when the space and staff did not serve the piece at all. After sitting in our broken, sagging seats, I commented to my friend before the show that the energy of the room felt like a school assembly - this wasnt a bad thing when I said it. There is a certain community feeling to that, but it soon became so distracting. The space amplified every audience noise and there was a LOT of audience noise. An entire group of 6-8 college students in front of us were on their phones, chitchatting, and sharing pictures with each other on their devices the WHOLE show. I had a pleasure of watching every Snapchat and Instagram story from one womans entire social network. People got out of their seats and left and came back into the theater multiple times. Five different times someones phone rang or alarm went off during the show. I understand these things are generally out of a spaces control, but there wasnt any announcement or even a program note to remind people to be courtesy.I brushed that off because - sure audiences can suck - and tried my best to focus on the production. BUT then we were sitting pretty close to the sound/lighting table and the staff were loudly whispering to each other. Ive never felt like an upset crotchety old theatergoer (Im 25), but that night I did! It felt like no one in the space cared to be there - and that would of been fine if I hadnt paid money. Wish I got to see that piece in a space that cared a bit more. Super disappointing. Hesitant about returning, which is a huge bummer because they present great work - but if there space is like that every time it isnt worth the time/money.Try to see the work they are presenting elsewhere if possible or maybe check if the night you are going the box office releasing a lot of comps? That may of been part of the issue? If it is a louder piece like a musical work or dance Im sure it will be fine. I dont know. Felt like no one wanted to be there and took away from the entire experience and in the end I just felt bad for the performers and my wallet.
I remember when this building first opened. You can see wear and tear. But great events are happening there!
I attended an all city orchestra concert there, the place is amazing.
Disturbing hall where Antisemitism is revived, revered and celebrated. It is sad to see coming from someone who lost so many family members from pogroms and the Holocaust.
Ailey Ii dancing was a revelation. We had seats way up front, which was great for seeing, but tough for exiting.
Great space for a low key show.
I really like this venue. Its not too big. Its one of those, every seat is a good seat kind of place.
Congratulation to the class of 2019 Did a great job this night.
Very Organized and a nice place to go visit to see a discussion or anything they are giving.
Loved the venue and the performance, Bill T.Jones Trilogy. Never experienced anything like it. Hope to get to this theater again.
Saw Brian Cox here. Great venue.
This auditorium is better than some Broadway theatres out there. The staff is great and their invited speakers are always fascinating.
Seats are not very comfortable, and rows are very tightly packed together
Very nice compact concert hall with great acoustic
A great venue for many fantastic performances. Buy your tickets early as the good shows always sell out. Pro tip: there arent any bad seats in the house but the best ones are the center seats in the 4-6th row.
Nice, spacious theater next to Washington Square Park. Check the calendar for exciting live events!
A fine theater, well-designed, excellent acoustics, yet the soundman failed terribly with lackluster audio for such a decent compliment of audio monitors/speakers. For lectures/speaking/talks etc., its superb, yet considering todays standard, multimedia, audio needs - perhaps the current audio system requires some fixes and upgrades to add a touch of fidelity, effects and bass for events which use a lot of either music and/or audio elements.Id give it 5 stars, but the audio simply sucked for the 1st part of the event last Monday. I told the sound/audio guys to add fidelity and bass. They listened, happily obliged and the second-half went well (much better,) yet still lacked the heart, punch and fullness it needed... Perhaps it may have been the audio guys....? IDK but they better get on with exceptional AUDIO....!Lastly, I really loved the interior; its simply beautiful with an elegant, minimalist, American design and feel...
Creative selection of excelent shows. Friendly and helpful staff
Was here for a work conference. Gender neutral bathrooms? Come on now.. guys and girls in the same bathroom. Gross
Great presentation on AI & robotics as part of World Science Festival. Bathroom assignment / labeling ... very interesting.
Good for lectures or conferences, although a lecture with 600 students is not optimal
Its great culture
Beautiful place but too small to congregate after show. 200 or less. Major construction on street causing traffic headaches
Great experience at the Brian Cox show!
Amazing Talk by Tal Keinan and Lord Rabbi Sachs
Awesome venue for any show. The place is a nice size with a grand staircase to go towards the theater. The bathrooms are clean and spacious too. I approve and look forward to coming to more shows at this center!
Intimate theater with great lights, sound, and staff.
Im in love with the aesthetic of the place. Bonus for gender neutral bathrooms.
Having seen many shows in this venue, I do not think there is a bad seat in the house. They have a diverse menu of programs. Developed to enhance the university and neighborhood community.
Decent theater. Went for my son’s high school graduation
Great auditorium! Easy to access, easy to check in. Wonderful!
This is a truly professional theatre with excellent sight lines for the audience. I took away one star because their wine choices at the concession bar was awful.
The Skribal has to find better people to serve the public. Joe the manager at the box office is a confused loser and very unprofessional...the staff is as incompetent as it gets. The child they have answering the phone talks like a bimbo constantly saying umm and like. Im sure there are smarter people willing to work in the box office.
The theater is actualy really spacious. However, be careful about sitting in the back during lecture. YOU WILL FALL ASLEEP. No doubt about it. Get there early and sit near the front. Im serious.
Awesome venue! Super polite staff!
Lots of local and college performances along with world renowned opera, musical, play, concert, and benefit productions.
Lame and bad acting
Good enough place.A little aged but serves it purpose
NYU EMBA graduation. What could be negative?...lol
Awesome graduation i.c.e.
Really nice theater with great views from every seat
This place will be filled with many memories for me.
Large venue for the arts..I actually saw an NY Tech conference here. Good alternative shows listed
I havent had the pleasure of watching a show here yet, but I hear that they are good. However, as a student of NYU, I have been to the top floors of Skirball, which offers an amazing view of 5th Ave., Washington Square Park, and the Empire State Building.
Great place for new and experimental music, theatre, entertainment. Venue a little cold aesthetically.
Impossible stairs without handrails lots of seniors struggling down and up terrible design..great progrms
Great theatre with a wonderful atmosphere. Enter on the east side of the building next to the box office.
I graduated from High School in this building. Its very nice inside. Its small yet open, I loved it.
I really like the presence of the stairs in this building. It gives a sense of a lot of open space here.
A large, modern space with stadium seating, a raised stage, and screen, the Center has good sound and line of sight for events.
Nice intimate theatre with unique shows.
Excellent venue for theater, music and dance
Went here for a performance of Pilobus and the NYC tech meetup. Good venue with a lot of seats.
Went there on Mar. 3rd, 2017 evening, equipment failure after intermission. Instead of apologizing and issue a refund, management had us sit there for an hour while the show Boom Circus tired to get their act together. Reputable businesses respect customers time, and refund for services not rendered. But not this place!
Always has interesting and indie shows/performances playing at an affordable price.
Amazing theatre space. The lighting and sound is very very good.
Fabulous seating, sight lines, accoustics, lobby, location.
Nice venue, we had a great time.
Ok this place says that it has 860 seats but nyu has more than 20,000 undergrads altogether so idk who did the math here but i dont think we have enough
Had a lovely time.
It was ok not that good but it was ok
Great venue to watch performances. Highly recommended.
Good. Chnagide marayere
Great theater, good programming
Nice theater for film and performing arts
