The music was breathtaking, the band is beyond amazing. The place, however, leaves much to be desired. I expected it to be cramped but I was quite dissapointed to see that the band is partially blocked from view from several seats. The service was amazing. Would highly recommend for any music lover coming to NYC, it was an amazing experience, just get ready to feel cramped.
Saw Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas 1/22/20 excellent show!
Definitely One of the best moments in my life.
The vanguards music set was exquisite. The 16 piece jazz group had everything. It is a cosy place and if you want the best seats, it is best to arrive early. We reached at 10 pm for a 10:30 pm show and all we got was seats at the back. We probably should have arrived 45 minutes before to get better seats but the jazz was great.
I have no Jazz gene. So I am biased. But went with a friend who loved it and likes Jazz.My feeling as a non Jazz lover on a Monday when the Jazz House not so big band plays at 20:30 or 22:30.It is one of the best clubs according to the lists. So if that is the case then I went to a great place. But:You pay 35 dollars entry fee and you have to take a drink which are expensive. They play for 1 hour and 10 min. With a lot of talking between it. Also they emphasize a lot on solo’s.The place is cramped and I really wondered if it was save incase of an emergency as you are in a cellar and there is very very little room between the tables and chairs to get out when needed. But if you take the subway in New York you probably do not mind this club.
Historic jazz club home to some of the best musicians in NYC. Lovely, atmospheric venue, good seating and staging, and of course fantastic musicians playing all night long. My only complaint is that the pricing is steep: $35 for a standard ticket and then you have to buy a compulsory drink per set with the cheapest beer costing $8. I understand that this is NYC, but other jazz clubs such as Smalls and Mezzrow have equally good music but for half the price.
One of the worlds great jazz clubs. Literally, a hole in the wall. Actually, literally a hole in the ground, but that doesnt matter: great atmosphere, great music, always full to the gills. Get there early to get a seat with decent sight lines.
Absolutely wonderful atmosphere. Amazing to be at this place that has so much history and enjoy some brilliant live music. Certainly a must go if youre near.
Very cool experience! Seats werent the most comfortable, and it was kinda cramped, but Im pretty sure thats to be expected. That being said, this was a little different for us, so Im not sure what the typical jaz club experience is. Overall though I found the evening very enjoyable and would do this again the next time im in Manhattan.
Cool drinks, cool vibe. If youre a jazz lover, you gotta come here and give this place a chance. Youll also find great artists and performers.
Heard Tom Harrell here several years ago. I never forgot the experience. Nice sight lines. What you look for in such an iconic venue such as this.
What a classic place that doesnt just stand on its storied history but continues to host great acts. A bit cramped and tight but it doesnt matter when everyone is friendly and the staff are super helpful and efficient. Whether a local or a traveler, you simply must go at least once, but hopefully again and again.
An absolutely thrilling experience. Unrivaled acoustics and an authentic village experience. The drinks arent bad either! Come on Mondays for the orchestra and youd have to be a crazy person to leave disappointed.
This classic jazz club and Greenwich village institution has stayed true to its origins.Musicians play two sets, and I prefer the late set after having a drink nearby with friends. The ambience is great and I keep coming back every time Im in New York. Highly recommended!
Terrible attitude and service. People are getting cramped in the small space. We were first seated in a row of chairs with no table. When we asked to move they moved us to a table in the passage to the kitchen and warned us to not move our chairs from against the wall to not block the way. When we were asked if the new seat is better and hesitated to answer for a second, the person started yelling at us Yes?? No?? What do you want?! And walked away. Show was ok but definitely not supporting this terrible attitude again, there are plenty of jazz clubs in NYC
A legendary Jazz club that has entertained thousands of people since 1935. If only the walls of the Vanguard could talk. I first went in High school and always enjoyed this club and hope to do so for many years to come. Definitely recommended for all those from NYC and anyone visiting the greatest city in the United States. The Vanguard continues to serve all patrons of the art of Jazz should definitely be on the bucket list for all of those who have yet to attend one of their live shows.
Great opportunity to enjoy some nice jar with a drink. Gets bit packed but still confortable to sit and enjoy a nice show.
Great cozy place for a couple to sit, relax and have a few drinks while listening to a awesome band.
Legendary Jazz venue. My wife and I visited on a friday evening to see Kenny Barron trio. It was the music that made this place so special and thats everything about it. Let the music speak for itself.
Fabulous. Emmett Cohen trio with Evan Sherman and Ron Carter. Absolutely wonderful. Such talent !!!
You can feel the legendary, iconic performances of countless Jazz greats in every atom of this venue. Also, a decent size for a village jazz club.
This is too difficult to use from a remote location and I missed Ben performance.
Great vibe. This is one of those legendary new York places that lasted at the same spot since the old days. You can really feel the presence of all the jazz greats lined up on the wall here. I mean, every jazz great had an album titled Live at the Vanguard, and you can feel it when you enter. Trane, Monk, Miles... its inconceivable that they played at this very spot!Service was good, seats comfortable, prices reasonable. Audience respectful of performers. What else could one ask for?Make sure to get there early, I suggest 30 min before the doors (about 1 hr before show) to get a good table.
My visits started 1974 and went on trough the 80s 90s to CHANGE of centuriesvisiting the AES audio engineering society or importing DiMarzio pick Ups, or Community Loudspeakers, Pioneer TAD compression driver ....and hanging out here to listen to Ron Carter, Dizzi Gillespie eg.nice to see and hear it still is THE CLUB letsmove for ONE WORLD with good attitudes toUN & UNESCO culture
Classic little jazz club with a casual feel. Line up early for a good seat.
Avoid sitting by the bar if you can. You can do it by getting there far in advance. Cocktail making means bottles swinging and ice sounding on top of the music for the first 40. It can ruin a show. Everything else is great.
Legendary venue with the best live jazz in the world on the stage almost every night. If you are into jazz you must visit this spot. Old school. Not many places like it left.
I saw the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra on 8/12/19, and it was easily the most mind-blowing jazz show I’ve ever seen. The greatest horn section in the world, period. Just jaw-droppingly incredible. Super friend wait staff as well. This place is a national treasure.
Books great artists, reasonably priced, almost every seat has good sight lines
What else is there to say? Its the Village Vanguard!Ive included a picture of their latest sanitary inspection grade. The Vanguard got an A! Who wouldve believed it? After all these years of wondering who owned the cellar (Lorraine Gordon or the neighborhood rats), we finally have an answer.
Good value and amazing performers. A must do for any tourist or resident. A enriching experience and story-rich, however, there are no historical signs. I personally know the owner of the Vanguard.
The place to be, in NYC and whenever you close your eyes listening to jazz, wherever you are.
Really nice and different type of jazz! Drinks were quite expensive, starting at 6$, but overall really nice
Jack Kerouac’s beatnik style has been embraced by grottoes and coffee shops across the United States, from Greenwich Village to San Francisco. The Village Vanguard, however, was at the center of the movement, with Kerouac himself having performed poetry at the club. Visitors can recapture the spirit of the Beat Generation by checking out live music from the likes of the Chris Potter Quartet, the Fred Hersch Trio and Donny McCaslin. Those looking for something extra special should head to the club on a Monday night to see the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, who have performed in the same slot since 1966.
Great vibe and historical club. A plus staff and acoustics.
Great Jazz club! The Monday night Village Vanguard band is a great experience and always put on a great show. The atmosphere is unique, dark, and cozy, and the servers do a good job getting out so many drink orders in a tight space.
A small and intimate jazz club with friendly staff and epic performances. This classic club has been around since 1935 and is a must see for any New York jazz fan.
The best jazz bar in the world!
This club epitomizes the history of jazz. A must-visit!
If you like jazz music it is the place.Excellent musicians, friendly atmosphere, normal prices.
Classic NYC jazz joint for the past zillion years. Still great, even midweek.
Small jazz club in NYC. we had a great time. Tables are quite small for a group of 5 and we did feel quite cramped, however, show was good and service did not interrupt the music. The one drink minimum can run pricey for a large group with cocktails at 16 a piece
Exactly what jazz should be about. Intimate, respectfully casual, shabby and unfussy. The drinks are ridiculously expensive, but this is New York, and the Old Fashioned was good.
Great - perhaps the greatest Jazz club in New York/the world! Cosy, intimate and great music! Drinks are reasonably priced but get the tickets before hand over the Internet. Great night out in the Village
Worldly famous, Cosy jazz venue, we saw the Village Vanguard band perform, it was an unforgettable night! Do book your tickets in advance to see them! The place does not sit many people.
The high temple (in a non-religious way) of modern jazz. Nice and friendly atmosphere, you immediately feel welcome. Finally getting the chance to visit after having digged all those Live at the Village Vanguard recordings throughout the years was like a dream come true.
Classic New York. VV needs no introduction. If youre tired of the trendiness of newer establishments and youve never been to the Vanguard, go immediately. Never overly crowded, always wonderful jazz. Buy tickets online to avoid waiting in line. Ive never been unhappy in this place. Coming here is refreshing and always memorable. Ive discovered a few new favorite musicians at this venue. So much is owed to this Village establishment.
Polite, generous, and great service. And an awesome friendly environment including the audience.
It doesnt get better than this. The greatest music - Im thinking of Bill Frisell here - in the greatest venue.Long may you run.
I can’t even believe I went through what I went through when coming here. The most racist people I have ever encountered. I have heard bad about this place, then i decided to come see for myself. The way I was treated was unexplainable. The service was terrible. There were people rude. I would never recommend this place to anyone.
Classic jazz joint. A must visit for Jazz aficionados
Same as it always was, great music, historic venue, jazzy vibe.
Its an historic place for jazz but the day that I went the band didnt sound very good
Classic jazz venue in the West village, a must visit for anybody who loves music
One of the best jazz places in New York. If you want to get good seats, I suggest arriving by the time their door opens, as lines begin to form. We booked tickets online for the 8:30pm show and arrived by 7:30pm. The lines quickly formed, but we had one of the best seats.
A must go to anybody who loves and appreicates jazz music, particularly with a love of the history and roots based in new york. You wont be disappointed by the acts!
Still one of the premier venues to hear live music. Great vibe and aciustics. The Bill Frisell Trio was inspiring.
Enjoyed the music. Minor suggestion: wider variety of composers. Of 5 pieces 3 were Thad Jones. Enjoyed all.
A small, intimate venue known for jazz. We saw the Terrell Stafford Quintet and were blown away at the quality. Waitstaff were fantastic. Wait to get in was not that long, but recommend getting on line early-ish.
+ great live music+comfy seats if you are early+seems pretty well organised-a little pricey but this is nyc
I went to see the Bill Charlap Trio at the Village Vanguard on Saturday. The atmosphere is an old school 60s vibe...artsy and vibrant. While the seating is a bit tight, if you go early, you get a seat next to the stage. You hear every note, see every expression and feel the energy coming from the artists. Theres a one drink minimum but the ticket prices so reasonable there isnt anything to complain about. I truly enjoy a good night of music. The Village Vanguard provides it.
THE place to go for jazz in the city. The history of this venue is astounding. You can’t get any better than the Village Vanguard. Monday nights are especially great because the house big band will play music from past bandleaders such as Thad Jones. The talent that consistently comes here is always above average. Seating can be first come, first serve, recommend coming 40-30 hour before your set time to guarantee the best space/view.
Tourist trap. Was disappointed by the place. Its basically a venue, there is no vibe. There are plenty of much more lively bars around much cheaper and much better.
Iconic, legendary jazz club. Terrific atmosphere. Keep this intimate? basement place going forever!! It is a phenomenal place. Jazz, art, nice people. Bar and table seating. Big band on Mondays. A good bet anytime. West Village location and easy to find. Friendly staffers.
Saw Fred Hersch trip, who put on an amazing set. This club the perfect size for an intimate jazz performance . The service was good, albeit a little noisy if you sit near the back by the bar.
What’s not to like? Our fav night is Mondays and the ‘house’ jazz group of 15-16 ‘old timers’ that know how jazz is supposed to be played.Oh....and a cozy + intimate setting.
Great jazz lounge bar. The music was fantastic and the place iconic. I would suggest this place to locals and tourists willing to go seeing a jazz live concert.
Authentic jazz is to be experieced here in this landmark Village bar and performing space. Many tourists visit and so do residents out on the town, er, village. Many of the greats performed here such as Dizzy Gillespie.
Opening hours a bit late. The bar service poor...but the show was good
Its an authentic experience. The location is great, and the trio playing the night we went were great and very talented. We were lucky to be seated close to the stage. Just FYI you can only order drinks before the show starts, there are no breaks, so if you are in a party mood, just make sure youre good before they start.
Wonderful night and well organized, we had a great view quite close to the front. The sound was great and the waitresses were discreet but attentive.I would advise to arrive early to assure yourself of a good seat. We arrived 35 minutes before the performance and waited around 15 minutes before the doors opened. Over in we were seated quickly and were soon enjoying it drinks and some great music.Definitely going back.
Up and coming jazz artists old and new! Ordered drinks and snacks, we all had an enjoyable night.
Real jazz club. Famous for the right reason
Music and more music... this is heaven so to speak!
Great place to listen to jazz and soak up history.
Legendary place...tons of history and making new history with all the new and older current talents. Just go...
21+. 10$ charge. FRIDAY FLASHBACK music (Biggie,SWV) Great crowd, okay priced drinks, public parking, 10$ lot. Overall my spot on Friday nights!
A must place for any jazz aficionado. The Mecca to listen to jazz. The place is a legend among the giants of jazz. The place is cozy and acoustics are excellent. You expect Miles to walk onto the bandstand any moment. The drinks are well made also. Dont miss out.
Wonderful jazz venue in a west village basement. the drinks were good, the music was loud and the whole place was buzzing with excitement!
Legendary venue, Great Sound. Would be nice if they updated the chairs as they feel like theyre as old as the venue itself ! Would not hesitate going back.
Went for the monday orchestra. Nothing special. It really bothers me that its all men. The whole 15 people orchestra plus the whole schedule for september and october
