Very informative guide. The grounds and house were beautiful. It was really interesting to hear of all the important people that have been here and how things were and looked back then. It was nice to see some of the pieces that actually belonged to the family.
This is such a wonderful place! My husband and I spent 2 hours here today and enjoyed it immensely. Our tour guide (the lady who was formerly a school teacher) wore period clothing and was so knowledgeable. She really made it an enjoyable experience and provided so many wonderful details. It was really a fantastic experience!
Our tour guide was fantastic. We love hearing about history, and visiting a historic house where a battle took place was really fascinating. The ladies working there were so friendly and knowledgeable. Well definitely visit again.
Dont believe their website. It says prominently that they dont discriminate against anyone but they just denied my wife and I entrance. We have religious exemptions and cannot wear masks. Its a direct violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 sections 201 - 204. They said theyll get fined by the governor so lets see how expensive a civil rights violation gets.
Our tour guide the lady who was formerly a school teacher wore period clothing and was so knowledgeable.
We spent several hours here. Two were of a guided tour of the house! I learned so much and developed the need to learn so much more! Our guide was very well knowledgable of the history and was gracious enough to take her time answering our many questions. Please, please, please visit this museum. It will fill your heart with tragedy and empathy. Americana at best!
Awesome experience, we had never known about this place or the battle that had taken place.
This gem of a place is tucked away here in the southern side of Nashville. Lots of history to be seen here and they take pride in its preservation. We ended up have our wedding and reception here. The coordinator, June, was great to work with and easy to communicate with. They rent out the barn on the property and you are able to have people come in and decorate and cater if needed. They are partnered with a few vendors and are helpful in making it a great experience. I would high recommend this for anyone visiting for some Civil War history and/or a wedding.
This is an awesome place has a lot of history you learn a lot about John Overton you get to see some free historical stuff and the staff there are incredible they are very knowledgeable of all of the information the storytelling the actual historical sites in items paintings on the walls everything it is a must do you learn so much he will be happy that you made the decision to do so
Tour guide was super informative and knowledgeable, she would answer any questions or comments tour goers may have. Before the tour of the actual house theres a small shop where you buy the tickets, restrooms and a small but very informative museum. The house and plantation were inhabited by a judge who is foundational of Tennessee law, and they keep his books there as well as many original pieces in all of the rooms.
Went to this place last April and loved it! The man giving the tour was very knowledgeable, personable and fun! The place is absolutely beautiful. Would definitely recommend.
We showed up today and missed the 1pm tour. Bummed was the understatement & the wonderful people here volunteered to take us at 1:30 and it was a blast! Fun, lively, funny, informative and well worth the visit. Very knowledgeable about the house, family, grounds, etc but especially enjoyed the banter with our guide and our shared knowledge, passion, and beliefs of the civil war. Hands down; best people we met on a tour!
Travellers Rest is one of the most beautiful garden estate properties in Nashville and at an amazing value for a wedding. The property has tons of gorgeous Magnolia trees, flowers, and tons of greenery. Plus it has tons of options as to how you can celebrate your big day! However, the best part of the venue really is the team. Mary Jo and her team out did themselves to help us with our wedding. Mary Jo really knows her stuff and ensured we had the best day ever. I cannot say thank you to enough to the Travellers Rest Team!
There were so many hands on activities and interesting crafts and arts for us to learn about. It is a very relaxed atmosphere, the ladies and gentlemen at all the exhibits were very friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. My son, 7, had a great day and wants to come back tomorrow! Or anytime just to walk around.
Very informative tour. We went on a weekday so apart from a school group it was very quiet. We ended up with a private tour and our guide was very knowledgeable about the house, its contents, and the grounds, and answered all of our questions in detail. Beautifully restored and well maintained.
I recently had the pleasure of working at Travellers Rest for a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. It was stunning. Mary Jo and her team were amazing to work with and made everything seamless. I would highly recommend for any occasion!!
While in the Museum we encountered 3 male spirits. They were soldiers. 2 Union and 1 Confederate. We were watching the short movie when an overwhelming smell of body odor premeated the room. We were the only 3 people in the Museum at the time. And none of us smelled. We looked among ourselves and laughingly checked our armpits. My husband who is a medium told us he saw them. Once he acknowledged them they stood up and walked away. After that the smell left as well.
Very interesting place to visit. Great tour guide.
A unique historic gold mine. It can be found near the Davidson/Williamson county line. The home of John Overton one of Nashvilles most significant founders. Very much worth the beautiful drive and lovely tour of the grounds. You will not regret it at all.
What a great experience. Highly recommend a visit if you have not been!
We arrived after the last tour so we couldnt see the house but the admissions lady was extremely friendly and informative. She went out of her was to answer questions and was very enthusiastic about representing the property and its history.
Visited Travellers Rest on a field trip with my daughter. There were 4 buildings we toured. The welcome/gift center, the Main house, the schoolhouse, and the barn, which is not historic, but built to blend in and used for events. The thing I liked about this place versus other historic museums, is that while the guides dressed for the 1840s, they did not go method and stay in character. That always freaks me out. They were knowledgeable and good with the kids.
Very nice interpretation of one of Nashvilles premier interpretive antebellum homes and Civil War sites! Loved it!
If you like to experience something more than boots, booze and ball in Nashville you will like the preservation of old homes, old ways and even special festivities all year long. Especially if you have friends and family from out of town . Travellers rest is a good place for quiet experiences of the real South for young and old
I was there at my son’s school field trip it was fun everyone was friendly and funny!
What a wonderful experience!
Very beautiful venue and grounds. My nephew and his new wife had their reception here. Definitely recommend.
Great working there, beautiful! #pretyandpopping #balloonsbyjill #notjustarealtor
Awesome experience and great learning opportunity for the whole family!
Very good tour of some very interesting history. A real hidden gem. Should be advertised more so more people can enjoy.
First-time visitor, traveling through and wanted to visit since it was a blue star Museum. Went into admissions not noticing the out to lunch sign. Which I find a little odd, i would think that someone could find time to have their lunch during slow times. Didnt seem like there would be a steady flow of people coming in and out. After being rushed out of the admissions office, so not to disturb lunch, we decided to go on back through the grounds and just show our military ID afterwards. Gorgeous buildings and my kids really enjoyed the few child geared activities. Was not aware that we were not supposed to go through the main house without being on a tour. That probably was part of a conversation that would have happened at admissions. Sorry about that. Was in a time crunch so didnt end up having time to go through a tour. Feel like maybe the website should have gone through tour times just so we could have visited at the right time.
Great tour, very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in Tennessee history.
Sad that the house was closed on New Years day. Well be back.
Very informative tour and well preserved artifacts of Andrew Jackson and law partner .
They offer a Ladybug picnic for Girl Scouts. So much fun!
I attended an event at Travellers Rest in October and was amazed with the beauty of the historic plantation and the friendly and knowledgeable staff members who work there.I loved how Travellers Rest worked with the caterers of the event to create a unique (and delicious) menu. For example, the entree utilized bourbon sourced from the plantation grounds - very creative!Travellers Rest was the perfect setting for an intimate night of history, great food and terrific company. I would definitely plan and/or attend an event here again and highly recommend it to others!
Beautiful location for an event, was a wonderful field trip that the teachers, parents and kids all enjoyed.
Nice old home with fascinating history. But they need more visitors so they can raise more money for much-needed restorations and upkeep. Still a worthwhile place to visit. Very friendly staff.
Very nice wonderful historical plantation
Seem somewhat disorganized but most objects and furnishing were true to time. Tour guide was good. YOU Could emphasize Civil War History a little more.Seven Generals sat at their table and the Lion laid down with the lamb there.
Cool place, went to a wedding outside there... maybe a bit too close to a busy trainyard for that but beautiful none the less... giant magnolia trees... the party venue in back was nice!
Very knowledgeable staff, beautiful historic site. More then willing to answer any and all questions you may have. A must see if your into history especially of amazing women in history.
Nice grounds, quick and informative tour. While not as fancy as some of the Plantations Ive visited, it still holds a lot of history and has been well preserved.
Always enjoyable to visit historic places.
Best hidden historical gem in Middle Tennessee. If you want the best people to share the history of TN come hereand ask questions! Great group of Docents. Fantastic summer camp program.
If you are not doing the tour guide, the visit is pretty short although interesting.
The plantation and overall exp. was great. Tour guide couldve been a little more informative.
Attended a wedding and reception in the barn. Nice facility.
A piece of history in Nashville. Definitely something to see if you like historical buildings.
Our tour was informative and enjoyable. Our tour guide Kelly did a great job explaining rooms and lifestyle from eras gone by, without going long on explanations. The tour from start to finish took about 1.5 hours.
I was pretty unimpressed with the tour, house, and grounds. I feel there are better places to go for a more concise and informational tour in the Nashville area. The museum that visitors view before the tour has a LOT of facts to take in and I was not sure what I was supposed to get out of it. Travelers Rests website advertises Mississippian Indian mounds but they are no where to be found (apparently the house is built on top of one?). The house was used as a railroad office so its not as authentic or ornate as some of the other Nashville historic homes. The tour was okay but we spent a lot of time in some rooms and glanced over others. Overall, there are just better places to go for the same amount of money.
Wonderful display of African American geneology of slaves on second floor of smokehouse. Ask about Native American research and coming displays
Guide was sooooooooo knowledgeable! Very interesting house.
Great historical place to visit. We had a fantastic tour of the home and had a very good guide that went over all of the history and artifacts in the home.
Interesting place to visit. This plantation is unlike others in the Nashville area. Its one of the best antebellum (pre Civil War) sites to visit in greater Nashville. Fun and informative visit.
Learned a lot and Ive lived almost all my life..
Loved the place...wish we could see the whole house...basement and all.
The best venue weddings !!!!
Was too late for a tour, but poke around and read things. Seems cool. Wish I had more time. Its kind of hard to find too.
Very unique, and I love reading about our history.
Toured as part of a package deal with two other Nashville mansions and this tour was the least impressive and least interesting of the three. Glad we did it last.
Great tour and wonderful antiques from the Civil War. Takes about an hour to see, but you get a lot of information about the era, the people and of Jon Overton.
An old civil war house. A short film and small museum, then a guided tour of the house. Worth the trip to see.
Beautiful site and grounds. Fantastic story to tell about local history. Interpretation covers the enslaved as well. Great site!
Great venue for a wedding and reception the staff is friendly and knowledgeable its all on one level so its easy to load in and load out
Folks and tour is very nice. They do a great job telling the stories.
Both the house and grounds were fantastic. You start in the museum with a video and artifacts which gives you an idea how the plantation came to be and what happened to it during the war. The house if full of furnishings of the time. The slave cabins go into how the slaves lived and worked on the plantation.
We had a great time on the tour today. Great place for a history lesson on the Battle of Nashville. When you go ask for Kelly, she is a great tour guide.
Great venue. We played Puerto Rican plena music without any mikes or amps and it was a great room for it.
Beautiful historic property. Perfect for family outing
Beautiful spot. Went to a lovely wedding here.
Great staff and so much history. Glad this site is preserved
This place makes a great wedding venue or historical learning opportunity.
Wonderful piece of our history! I am so thankful it was preserved.
I am a teacher and went with my middle schoolers to tour Travelers Rest. They offer different types of tours that focus on varied subject matters. We chose the tour that focused on slavery. Our tour guide Tonya was very sweet, incredibly knowledable, and oftered a perspective of slavery that helped my students to understand that all human beings (regardless of skin color or whether they are male or female) deserve basic human rights. I HIGHLY recommend the tour on slavery.
Got there 45 mins before closing still had time to walk the grounds Beautiful place!
Love history, plus my parents live right behind this historic place.
Local historical home. Great tour guides.
Learned some history I didnt know. Nice grounds.
We found the tour interesting and the guide informative.
Wonderful history!
Very pretty setting for intiment gatherings
Interesting, but a little bit small.
The tour guide ( Brian ) is full of knowledge.
Closed on Mondays, website gives incorrect hours.
Great venue for celebrations! And loved the historic feel!!!
Creepy but interesting
My ancestors were slaves here!
BIG area and we went with school Field Trip and I was told NOT to use the FLASH inside the mansion for the photograph..... (I got permission from the staff before taking the picture)
Quiet and low key
Interesting and well kept
Awesome
Spot on
