Very cool battlefield site with tons of trails and features. We went on a rainy day, unfortunately, and couldnt enjoy all of the exhibits, however we were able to do the driving tour and museum/visitor center. The driving tour was nice and well put together - however the audio formats could be a bit more clear and the narrator a bit less monotone.Im disappointed in the very one sided perspective of the museum - its almost like the government has forgotten that the enemy were still Americans and that TN was a very torn state during the war. Given that history is written by the victor, and the American Govt being what it is - cant say Im surprised. The South may have been in the wrong but it would be nice to at least see both perspectives.
One of my favorite Battlefields. It was a perfect weather day. This Battlefield was very easy to visit as the map was well done.I was grateful that the Battlefield was well maintained. It was a perfect weather day to visit.I look forward to returning.
Stones River National Battlefield is a great place to go if you live in or are visiting the area. The grounds are always clean and neat. There are many markers that explain the battlefields role in Civil War history and there is a museum with artifacts and stories about the war. There are also nice hiking trails that are good for walks with the family. It is a good place to bike, run, or walk. If you come early or late in the day you will probably see some wildlife so be sure to bring your camera.
Beautiful Historic Site! Plenty of information that you can read on on the signs or, you can call a phone tour guide automated system, or even download a virtual tour guide on your phone so that you can check it out at your own pace! Another great thing was there are bike paths and trails all over the place, and if you feel like it you can drive from site to site instead of walking or biking! Great outdoor fun for family or really anyone!
Its a gorgeous trail! I love how it gives me a feeling of the old historic times and I know I still have more of this place to see. The visitors center was small, but great. The gift shop was so awesome and lots of awesome items to give as gifts. Such a wonderful place to go if you love history
A battle that not many have heard of. 23000 men died in 3 days. Very Informative staff and nice gift shop. Very interesting and solemn. A National Cemetery too. Worth seeing if youre in Murfreesboro Tennessee
Great park to spend a day with family. People on another hand....
An excellent historical park, with beautiful walking trails and a top notch museum. The park rangers were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed our visit! I learned a lot about the battle of Stones River, and walking the entire park really helped me to better understand what happened. Dont call it a day until youve headed down the road, across the river, to see the McFadden Farm monument and river trail!Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water if you plan on touring the battlefield by foot.
Great areas to hike around for those that just want to walk. I loved the layout of the tour and all the historical markers and information laid out. The museum in the visitors center was ok.
Beautiful battlefield with ample trails to explore. A lesser known battle than some of the others around the nation, but worth stopping and exploring. The visitors center has an excellent museum and short orientation video. There is a short drive tour, but the rewarding tour is to hike the trails. Also, the national cemetery across the street is worth a stop.
This is a very well preserved battlefield️. Some of its features are rather unique like those rock formations. I would recommend to go to the visitor center first to get familiar with the battlefield and then drive around. There are free maps available. The staff is quite helpful and enthusiastic. Please wear the mask and protect Tennessee.
Nice visitors center and gift shop. Friendly and helpful staff. The driving tour was nice. Be sure to use the app for a description of each stop on the tour.
Ill be back to look around more. This is the place for you if you like to walk or hike.
Fun! The woods are like a horror movie too! Perfect setting to get spooked!
I would of gave 5 stars but the map to the stops was confusing. We did figure it out. There is a lot of information provided. You can walk or drive to all the stops. The 5th stop you do have to drive to though.
Largest battlefield Ive visited yet- akin to Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Plenty of cannons, open fields, & hiking trails. You could spend the whole day here. Ample parking & most excellent visitor center is now open again. Very cool & knowledgeable park rangers- they know exactly what happened on this bloody battlefield. Ive visited twice, and Im still learning. Highly recommended family outing.
Very beautiful place. Can walk for hours. Saw my friends the deer, wild turkey and my long lost friend squirrel.
This place was really cool. The slaughter pen was the most interesting.
Lovely place without too many people. The staff was knowledgeable, helpful & friendly. Excellent museum.
The area is absolutely beautiful with rich history and nice walking paths for being in a large town. However, the reason for the bad rating, the rangers Ive spoken with that work this are are RUDE. If you can manage to avoid interaction with them, its a great place to visit.
History, nature, and helpful park rangers. I highly recommend bringing the whole family to come see this park. They have paths to walk on that will lead you through a historical Wonderland that you wont forget. You can enjoy the nature and history as you see the battlefield, as well as the cemetery. And when youre done walking trails, you can cool off in the Amazing air conditioned Museum and Gift Shop areas. Bathrooms are very clean and well-kept and the staff are so nice, showing true southern hospitality as you enjoy a historical event.
A great place for looking at history or just taking some relaxing time at a park.
Loved the history. Just happened to be the anniversary of the battle when my family visited this historic site. It is is a must if you are a Civil War buff or just love history.
Really cool battlefield and history, but its run just like all national bettlefields with little fair nuance to those who experienced this history. Very on narrative museum, but incredible battlefield.
The ranger who handles education at this park (John) is absolutely fantastic! We learned so much at this park!
I enjoyed learning about the history here.I keep coming back to walk the trails. Its well kept, some trails are in the woods, and you get to see wildlife.
Great place to walk and run. The woods trail is particularly fun with all the rocks. It’s usually very quiet and you can have it all to yourself. There are deer, squirrels, and turkeys to keep you company. It’s the perfect place to let nature calm you down after hectic days (and depending on the time of day, a chance to calm down from the traffic getting to it). The history part is also incredible and worth a visit.
This is a great stop even for locals. Look forward to going when the weather is warm and we can walk the trails.
Love our National Parks but 2 things bothered me this year. 1. would only give me 1 brochure. I understand they need to save money but my sister and I go at different speeds so one brochure very inconvenient. 2) No one at the visitors. center suggested the cell phone self guided tour. on the positive side great cemetery tour. Marta knew her history and engaged her group. Please go to your National Parks they are a treasure.
The battlefield is pretty bare. Some cannons sitting around and walk/drive up phone narrating available. The battlefield could benefit from a lot more displays and information. To symbolize one generals headquarters was a monument of stacked cannon balls. Other than a sign, you couldnt distinguish the area from any other property.
Excellent walking tour. Good explanation of Rosecrans finally moving south. The National Cemetery is part of the battle field with 6000+ Union graves, 3200 are unknown soldiers. Very solemn place.
Excellently kept park. Very informative and true to details.
Not as good as before when the visitor center was open, but still a good place to take kids from two to ninety-two to spend time outdoors viewing the various areas.
This is our history. A sad time in the life of the United States where we fought one another over our beliefs. It should be a strong reminder to use common sense and conversation instead of weapons to resolve conflicts.
Amazing historical park. Took the family there for a nice walk around the trails to see the bunkers and battlefield. Kids loved to see the canons and the video that played inside the museum. It was a wonderful day outsite. We got to experience tons of history as well as a wonderful day out with the kids and wife.
The layout has changed slightly. The trails are still the same. You will need to be careful if wearing shorts, not only is there poison oak, but poison ivy. Large bushes or small vines across the trail. Most trails are well maintained though. It looks like you cant access the visitor center right now, but they have a ranger and some tents set up outside. They are starting to crack down on kids on the cannons and carts, so you will probably have to find a different source of entertainment. Those cannons survived a war with muskets and 3 inch cannon balls, but apparently children as more destructive. The roads are now set up as 1 way roads. I remember that being different but it has been 6 months since weve visited.
Great historical walk, the slaughter pen is said to be one of the hottest spots for paranormal presence in the southeast.
Great place to have lunch. Lots of good history
Id give this five stars because it was great but then that would devalue the five stars that I gave to Shiloh. There is an awesome video and the place is well laid out. You can drive to each stop and dont have to walk far at all to do the exhibits. If you love civil war stuff then you will love this place, I thought it was great. If you dont really care that much about the historical value of it then you might not enjoy this place because theres not much to see, you have to use your knowledge of how things went down and your imagination to fully see the experience.
Fantastic place to walk, run or bike around. There is also a roadway for vehicles with four stops that runs though the site. Everything was clean and well kept, and relatively safe for children, elderly and disabled to moved about.
Historic site with trails, paved walkways, and accessible roads in the battlefield. Lots of historic markers to show specific sites, battles, or items of interest. Drivers can also tune into a verbal narrative on the radio. There is a welcome center, park rangers, and civil war reenactments on the property. One of the best spots for nature and pictures of the sky, because of the wide open fields.
Very nice visitors center and helpful staff. This site is huge but easy to find and follow the tour. Free admission and plenty of parking. The fort was outside of the preservation area but still worth the drive over to check it out.
Very knowledgable staff. Great gift shop. Self guided tour or bus tours. Download the app to stay connected on each step of the tour. Cemetary was a great experience.
Great place to visit. Its free. Has a driving tour, walking trails, bike trails, and beautiful scenery.
Very good National Park great history, great Rangers around the park very comprehensive history. Great stop probably a couple hours or quicker if you prefer. There are a lot of places to take pictures either scenery, family or historical. Disabled Vets check out special deal that allows you entrance into all National Parks also special discounts for seniors and disabled Americans. Dont forget your passports for your National Parks stamp. There is also a Civil War Cemetery to vist from the same parking lot.
We loved the battlefield, the walking tour was great and gave you a good idea of how the battle unfolded. The museum staff was terrific very very kind and informative, and the movie of the battle was terrific. We would definitely visit again.
Amazon historical site and a must see if you are in the Nashville area. Artifacts from both the Union and Confederate side were available for viewing with many interactive displays. You can walk or drive the battlefield area and listen to narrative using your cell phone.
This place was great. So much history here. The last image is a short video with an unexplained green dot that has a mind of its own as you can see. This video is of the actual battleground. Probably nothing. I researched the effects of videotaping against the sun for anomalies and really couldn’t reach a reasonable conclusion. Interesting.
Amazing history. The visitor center is one of the best i have ever visited. The history interpretation is very evenly presented with both North and South prespectives. The battlefield itself is breathtaking.
Beautiful and respectful. Two opposing sides, engaged in a fierce fight for survival, buried together forever. Beautiful and poetic. A must see
We stopped here for a quick home school field trip, and ended up spending hours here! The history is amazing, and the way the park is set up makes it perfect for children! The junior ranger program the park hosts is designed to teach children all about the history of the area, and we had a blast. The history is taught from a Union perspective — it was a union victory. So confederate sympathizers be warned
The grounds of the battlefield and adjacent properties are all immaculately maintained. The kids enjoyed earning their Junior Ranger badges while learning about the battle that took place here. Their favorite parts were the cannons on the battlefield. We did not get a chance to do the driving tour, but it is highly recommended and will definitely be on our itinerary for our next visit.
Loved it! Its not a huge park by any stretch but it is well worth the trip. Park staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking available with easy handicap access.
Well if you like Civil war History this is Major Battlefield Grounds.
Great place to visit with very friendly and informative Park Rangers. It is important to know the history of our country. The battle here took the lives of so many men. So glad I visited here and explored the site with my kids.
This is a great center, the area is marked well. Much history to be learned here.
Great place to learn of an important battle
Historical, educational well cared for grounds and museumAll free and tons of trails!
Nice place to walk on good weather days. Learn interesting facts about Civil War.
Historic battle took place here. Literally two minutes (by car) from the Embassy Suites hotel. Has a strong connection to Union Soldiers from Michigan and Ohio. Great visitors center with lots of background. Great place for a long walk among the tombstones and markers.
A moving experience for our first Civil War site visit. We enjoyed using the mobile app to hear an audio history of different locations on the grounds. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable.
A very memorable place, honoring those who put their lives on the line
A very nice museum and park. A great place to hike and travel back in time. Great items in the shop for all interests.
Beautiful place to go lots of history
Well kept battlefield, Union and Confederate cemeteries and an app for an informative driving tour. The visitor center was very nice and had historical displays, artifacts and a video about the battle. Good parking, handicap accessible. And just a few minutes from downtown Murfreesboro for several restaurant choices when youre finished with the battlefield!
Visitors center is descriptive and staff is helpful. Authors and historians frequently are there to share more information and research. Close to national cemetery.
We visited on the anniversary. The staff was helpful and delightful. The historical relics gave an impression of the war.
Great stop for history lovers!
My toddler will only nap in the car lately, and I find myself here more and more often. So peaceful and serene. A different kind of beautiful with each passing season. Inspired me to read up on Civil War history.
Great place for a run. Well-maintained trails and a nice visitor center. The Flora and fauna you can see on the trails and the diversity of habitats is impressive for the size of this park. It has cedar glades, prarie-like fields, hardwood forests, and cedar forest. Ive seen goldenrod, several different tree species, some cool slimemolds, numerous birds, and my favorite flower, Passiflora incarnata; the TN state wildflower aka the Passion Flower.
The informational museum is very nice and easy to go through. The battlefields are beautiful, somber and definitely worth the visit.
Beautiful scenery with amazing details of civil war history.
Great time. Lots of things to see. Reenactors were there on my visit. Rangers were very knowledgeable. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
A great place to learn about Civil War history and one of the bloodiest days of the war. You can walk through the park or walk or bike the trails.
Visitor center staff very helpful. Enjoyed taking a self guided tour.
Ive never learned about this battle ground, but I honor these brave men and Brothers
Would give it 5 stars but due to lack of funding the park is a little unkept and hard to navigate..Nice visitor center and museum. Its a shame because the battle here was pivoting. Its overshadowed by nearby Shiloh..
Love this piece of history
Download the app and take a driving audio tour! Rangers were kind and knowledgeable! So much history!
Very interesting! Too much to see in just one visit. Looking forward to exploring more. Clara gave a wonderful caravan tour! Watching the movie in the visitor center then seeing the places with her explanations made history come alive.
Always a beautiful spot for a walk. The park staff and rangers are always super friendly. Great bathrooms. I love this place!
Amazing. Great staff, great maintenance of the grounds, real American history.
Great park! Educational visitor center. Lots of good hiking/ jogging trails that rarely have anyone on them. Picturesque spots near the parking that are often used for family photos. Near the Greenway so can include this in longer walks.
Enjoy this place everytime I visit! The rangers and volunteers are very knowledgable and polite. There is a nice long walking trail or you can drive around and use the app to learn about this place in history.
National Park... Well maintained trails. Park closes at sunset. Bring water!
A lesser-known place to most out-of-towners, as it is infrequently mentioned in school history teaching, but a great place to learn about a very pivotal and important battle in the Civil War. The museum and film provides the basic info, and definitely take the short driving tour to get a better understanding of the setting.
Did my maternity pictures here and they came out great!!
Great visit with family. They were reenacting the entire battle at Stones River, one area of the battle at a time, explaining the soldiers approach, tactics and historical accounts of the battle written by the soldiers involved. Great day!
Great place to spend memorial day, great visitor center, informative displace, great driving route, easy to follow signs
Beautiful piece of our nations history preserved. Remember the fallen, those who fought, bleed and died for their fellow countrymen.
Well organized site with many walking trails, worth a visit if you are interested in the Civil War.
Excellent historical park that affords great trails through actual civil war battlefields. Driving tour was informative and the military graveyard was sobering. Finished with a tour through the museum.
I thought the call in tour was outstanding! Drive up to one of the signs, call the number and put the number in too listen to the history of the location. Outstanding!!
Gorgeous grounds and such great history! So glad I got to explore them!
History comes alive here
An excellent self guided driving tour to tell a story....
