One of those places you need to visit to learn about the history of Memphis and the area around. Some really interesting artifacts from the era gone by can be found here at the Cotton Museum.
A very clean, well presented, self guided tour through the old cotton exchange loaded with information. Children under 6 get in free, $10 for adults. Its mostly all located in one large room, starting with a short film, then displays. Finishing with interactive units and listening stations. On the other side of the gift shop is a informational board about how cotton is grown and used along with a fun little trivia game that my daughter and I had fun playing.
I was delivering here and havent ever been. Nice, clean, and quiet.
Great museum fifth you want to learn about cotton and its economic impact on the world. Very well laid out museum in a beautiful setting.
Good history about the power cotton had on economy.
Very informative! Very fun! Love that its a self tour so I can go on my time!
This is actually a very informative Museum. It covers the history of cotton in all its aspects. There are a lot of audio and video exhibits as well. Give yourself a couple of hours if you really want to experience all of it. Parking on the street is readily available, but bring some quarters.
Very friendly staff. Inexpensive and you learn the origin behind cotton.
It provides such an insight into the history of this industry.
My wife and I travel to visit museums. Although we learned a fair amount of about the cotton exchange, we cant really say that this museum was worth the trip. The largest thing we disliked was the price. Neither of us felt that the admission for the museum was worth it, being that it is a little over priced for what you got.
Had a cool museum plus an interactive cotton section for students
Very interesting - great part of southern history
Small, but very interesting museum!
Yet to visit, storefront awesome though. Going very soon.
Two blocks from the Peabody Hotel on Union Street, this little gem is amazingly interesting if 1) youre a museum person, 2) you have an interest in Memphis or U.S. history. $10 to get in, but discounts for retirees and teachers. It will take you 1-1.5 hours depending on your speed. Short intro video, biofacts, interactive displays, and short video vignettes covering sharecropping, the cotton gin, the cotton mercantile, etc. Not sure if the kids would be into this, but definitely for adults. Very small gift shop where you can purchase real cotton. Be sure to go around the corner by the elevators in the hallway to view a few more video vignettes. Try McEwans or Majestic Grill for lunch afterward. Walking distance.
Well done museum. Small but I learned a lot.
Very nice to see such a detailed history of the past in Memphis.
Not much to see but great history of the cotton trade there.
This is a must visit museum. Its so much more than just cotton. It is all the history, science and biological information about cotton that you may not know about. I was surprised and very glad I got to experience it.
Didnt know what to expect, but it shows a fascinating slice of southern life and the importance of cotton.
Was my wifes and mine 2nd anniversary... The year of cotton. We went to a paper museum for our 1st, and then made this our destination for our 2nd anniversary as it was the closest cotton museum we could find :)We got the Groupon deal which made it worth it. Like others have mentioned, really only need a couple hours for the visit. If we paid full price I would feel that it would be over priced. We did enjoy it and learned a lot of new information. Of course there was a lot of information with music and its impact, but sometimes wish it would of been more information related to cotton. Also started to watch some of the audio/video pieces but wish they were shorter clips. The information was great but not going to sit and listen to all of the clips in their entirety. In the end would still recommend it, learned a lot of new information, at least for us. Nice layout, and enjoyed the introduction video. But did find that information was repeated from the video and across some of the different plaques. At least worth stopping and visiting once as long as you are able to grab a deal.
Nice way to spend a few hours. Groupon is the deal
Great little museum. Enjoyed the history.
This museum is VERY interesting! The Memphis Cotton Exchange bldg is a gorgeous Art Deco design from the 1920s. The lobby looks fabulous. The Museum is mostly housed on the floor of the old cotton exchange, and covers the history of cotton and its influences on American culture and how the industrys changes affected American music, migration and many other things... a must see!
It defines the past. How cotton impacted the past. Sad but true.
Very neat bit of history about Memphis. I work for a large textile company and can attest to the accuracy of the information presented. It doesnt take long to walk through this museum, but you will come away with a lot of knowledge about cotton and the cotton exchange.
Great review of the equipment and early development of cotton production in the US.
OMG!!! WELL WORTH THE VISIT. YOU CAN WALK THROUGH IN AN HOUR OR TAKE YOUR TIME UP TO 3 HRS. LOVED IT! WALKING DISTANCE FROM HOTELS.
Very small self-guided Museum. If your 55 and older it is less then $10 to get in.
Definitely worth the visit if youre in town.
Love to get experience there. Learned a lot w those recording.
Great museum. History preserved
What a beautiful little Museum. The only other review here is very negative, but for what its worth, I had a great time. Though, I am kind of a history nerd. The interactive displays were great, and the oral histories and videos were fascinating. I also really enjoyed the kids side of the museum. The ladies working at the time I went were charming and knowledgeable. They even helped me find the perfect lunch spot.
Office building with good cotton museum on ground floor and cool tenants upstairs
Neat place interesting
Very interesting. The employee named Ben was most helpful. Ill return.
We spent a week in Memphis, and this was by far the worst attraction we visited. There is nothing to the museum, for which the tour is terribly overpriced @ $10. There are only 2 small rooms. The first initially looks appealing with a mannequin up on a ladder, posting cotton future prices in a back in the day setting. However, that is IT. The video which starts the presentation is uninformative and annoying as it is visually very difficult to look at, being simply pictures of pictures, which change rapidly. All it tells is that the Cotton Exchange was a clandestine group of wealthy old men, who made and lost fortunes speculating on the price of cotton, in a setting which was akin to a private social club, (i.e. simply an elite socially acceptable form of gambling). However, what is totally missing is any explanation of how cotton gets from the farmer to the users of the cotton (e.g. apparel manufacturers). How and where, and for what price did the farmer sell his cotton? You wont have any more of a clue about that after watching the video, and walking the two rooms, than before you came in.Furthermore some of the displays, already small, are simply musical items which are irrelevant, and pale in comparison to the many excellent Memphis museums dedicated exclusively to the history of blues and rock & roll music. Yes, there is a part of the tour which involves walking around downtown to several other locations, but that is not what you want, or envision, as part of a museum tour when you enter.Visiting this museum was a complete bust. I will say that the people were nice, but their museum needs to completely redesigned. As is, it is terribly inadequate, uninformative, and not worth the price of the tour.
Used Groupon here!Educational, small space full of history about cotton.
I believe the cost to getting is usually $10 per person with Groupon I pay $7 per person period however it is not worth the $7. First of all there is not much being seeing in there in terms of the volume or the amount of information in the museum. Second of all the technology within there is not the latest and the information is really out of date. I do not recommend others going unless it is free.
Amazing display and history on cotton!
Awsome, very informative.
So much history not taught in school self guided tour. Be sure to read about why the cotto gin was invented. The answer will surprise you
Interesting and with a lot of video material. Not very systematic in presentation. Lot of stuff is also repeated again and again. But the best source about the cotton industry we could find.
Pretty big building.
Very interesting and worth seeing a lot about an industry that really is at the heart of Memphis history.
Historic and infirmative
Worthy visit, really ties cotton into the scheme of things in the South and brings blues music background to light explaining well how it ties into the cotton trade
Really cool place! We rented out this place for brunch and there was really cool sights!

Awesome!
Poorly done, small.
One small kids room and another room (the former trading floor) for the grown ups. Not worth $10.
$10 admission for adults
Neat little place
Small but interesting.
It was a $6 not $10 museum.
