This is a pretty cool thing to do if youre in town. Interesting to see how the water level changes in the locks and how it all works. I did this during a kayak event in the summertime. And it was really fun. Although a lot of waiting around so not sure I would do the kayak event again but I would definitely go check out the locks.
So disappointed to find it closed. We had planned a field trip to go along with our home schooling.
People who live here dont know it. Good place to visit occasionally. Watch a coal barge go through. Impressive and happens frequently. I guess its coming from the east.
This is a great place to watch boats and barges on the Ohio river. They have markers that have early history of the locks and traffic on the river. Interesting early history of the river and the city of Louisville. Located in the old city of Portland, Kentucky now part of Louisville, Kentucky. Very interesting, take your lunch and enjoy it on the river. You dont have to be a history buff to enjoy the McAlpine Locks. Great view from the observation deck over looking the Ohio river.
Cool place! Come check out the ships go through.
Clean viewing area and a wealth of information about the lock and dam. You have the option to read or listen to recorded information. Watching barges going through the lock was very impressive. Would love to see a lock and dam tour boat so you could have the experience of going through the lock.
Take a look at one of the most efficient way to move large amounts of cargo. You do not really appreciate how big a full tow is, until you see it up close.
This is a fascinating place!! So much fun facts and history packed into one great place! And being able to see the barges come and go and put that with the what you learn while your there is awesome!!
Awesome place to visit. Great piece of history, lots of reading material. A must see for everybody.
A must see for anyone that does not live along a river with locks and dams. Little hard to find if you dont know the area, but well worth the visit. Corp of Engineers keep good brochures at site.
Great view of the river. Really cool place. More people should go there. Awsome 420 spot.
Nice place to view and learn an little. Quiet, peaceful.
Never knew that you could park and hike, and drive over the bridge to the island. We will be back!
Great fun. My daughter loved looking out over the locks
Great place to see the barges go up and down. Plus a great overall.history of the Ohio River and shipping
Great place to watch boats and barges pass through. Would like to see some renovations to the complex though.
What a great area to explore. So rich in history.
Great place to see lock operation in the Ohio river
Its a nice little side trip if youre into historical things or have a kid that loves boats. You wont be guaranteed to see a boat/barge in it but there are quite a few a day so just try again later!
Wish we had a chance to see the lock and dam operate. Well check again soon.
A modern marvel, simple yet interesting.
Very interesting. Saw boats going in both directions, up and down river. Our friend from Uganda thought it was the high point of his visit to Louisville.
A flood control dam, a bit bigger than Markland Dam up river. Nice place to visit.
Good place to visit
Interesting history - everything was easy to access in a wheelchair
Very fun place
Interesting place !
Just watched the licks a few minutes, didnt go in the museum or even get to see any boats locking through...
Great stop for transportation and river maritime buffs... check the flood pole out!
