I’m torn on the rating. It was a very small exhibit in a single room that only took 30 min to walk through (reading everything), but the ticket cost was only $6. It’s probably worth just checking out for the interesting gift shop, but only if you are already going to be in museum row.
Plan to spend 90 minutes here. COVID hours have changed to close at 5:00, not 6:00. Would recommend. I appreciate their clear intention to amplify Black voices. The immersive exhibit was cool. Zero other guests while we were there. Masks required, felt safe regarding COVID.
I absolutely loved KMAC. I wish I could go back!My friends and I were out-of-towners visiting from up north for a conference in the city, and this museum was one of the only places we could find open on a Sunday before flying out.Im so glad we found it. The ultimate museum aesthetic and feel- so warm and cozy and friendly. All the art was, of course, beautiful and thought-provoking.Even the coffee was absolutely delicious and made on the spot. My friends and I stayed here for a good while just chatting and hanging out in the lobby after viewing the pieces. The employees on the ground floor were highly knowledgeable and so kind and relaxed. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable. You could tell right away that they absolutely were passionate about the arts.On top of all this, admission was free!I still keep my pamphlets and stickers that I got here, and if I ever come back to Louisville I will 100% stop by. Im sure my friends would say the same.
Took my fifth graders here on a field trip where we studied screen printing. The lady who led our workshop was super knowledgeable and made things easy for the kids to understand. Screen printing is challenging but she made it work in 2 hours! The kids had a great time and later told me it was the best field trip ever. I appreciated the very affordable rate they charge for field trips and the connection between community and education.
I have been here several times: the guitar show, and Titanic exhibit; also during several Day of the Dead celebrations. A really good place, friendly, and fun. A beautiful space with intriguing exhibits- and a local focus. Highly recommended.
Nice small studio with a great Picasso exhibit. There are also some great pieces by the contemporary artist also featured in the museum. There is a great gift shop in the first floor, and art on floors 2 and 3. Reasonable entry prices (students are free) and gift shop prices.
Went to the KMAC triennial today where local artists were on display. This museum doesnt show local artists exclusively, they show work from artists all over the world. However, I really enjoyed this exhibit and my enjoyment was heightened by the fact that all of the amazing artwork was made by artists that are either from Kentucky or currently work/live in Kentucky. We have amazing artists here and they deserve a place at the table as much as anyone else. Ive enjoyed all the exhibits at this museum and the atmosphere is very modern, clean, and open.
Nice staff, loved the picasso exhibit and activities for the kids to enhance their experience.
Very nice but on the small side. I enjoyed the Picasso exhibit very much. I recommend stopping in for a visit and when you are done there go to 21C to see what they have on display. #localguides #kmacmuseum
Really, really, really enjoyed my visit. One of the exhibits they had while I was there was on chairs which was unexpectedly touching. They had several areas set up where you could sit down and make your own art. I would love to take my son here!
Excellent exhibit of Pablo Picassos work. The childrens area was very good for interactive play and learning.
This place is beautiful its so aspiring I recommend going to this place because you have the best time of your life here and beautiful art and the people are here so beautiful and nice and the staff will always help you if you have a problem so hope you enjoy yourself at this Museum
Chairs, chairs, and more chairs; loved the circular chairs when I first walked in the door. Each chair throughout was unique and carefully crafted with a description telling its story. There is an area for kids to explore, draw, and create their own paper chair. This was a really neat place to visit.
Forever one of my favorite spots to get lost in. Art from around the country are showcased here. Life would not be the same without art.
This is a small gallery spread across three floors. Admission is free, and there are some pretty cool works here. I actually came here twice on my four-day visit to Louisville!
Modern art isnt really my thing, but the exhibitions are unique. The staff is friendly, and the gift shop and kids area are full of interesting things to see and do.
My 5 year old loved the buildings exhibit and chair exhibit! And theres a fun shopping area for souvenirs. Well be back!
The Picasso exhibit was great. Ill be back!
Best atmosphere of all the many, many art museums/galleries Ive ever visited. Exhibits are always super interesting. The classes are really fun too
Great party on Thursday. Creative people rule!
Anything free deserves 5 Stars no matter what. There was friendly staff that greeted us when we walked in and even gave us a tour. Since they change out the artwork every month or so I think Ill visit again.
Small but had some interesting installations. Nice gift shop, too.
Interesting place. Current exhibit is thought provoking. Enjoyed the hour.
Picasso exhibit through March 2020. Illustrations, ceramics, and lithographs from the permanent collection of Antibes, France. This exhibit is only being shown in Louisville KY.
Went to see the Picasso Exhibit. It was Excellent!
Wonderful community art day, my nephew did two projects, and all ages were welcome! Great feel, very welcoming! Worth the visit!
KMAC is a gem in Louisville! Has a gallery of art that centers that changes every few months and often revolves around a pertinent topic. Definitely would recommend checking out.
Fantastic eclectic museum with a coffee bar. Interesting exhibits. Great gift shop.
Amazing museum! Highly recommend!
My daughter and I always have an awesome time when we go there, its an eclectic place that has something for everyone.
I dont like that they have changed stuff around AND had the third floor closed off. But the 1st floor is just a little fun.
Beautiful space with a fantastic activity area for kids. They host a family fun day monthly that has really creative crafts to do together.
Picasso exhibit and a great documentary film!
Unique quiet and nice place, chaitea coffee is good one.
Loved the Picasso exhibit! Thanks KMAC!!
A lovely gallery with excellent staff and some interactive exhibits.
It was pretty fun, we got to make prints of chairs so that was cool I guess
Nice collection and friendly staff.
PICASSO exhibit beyond words! A must see!!! I am going back to see it in a week and I can hardly wait!!!
Love the little hidden coffee shop! What a great space!
Its a FREE contemporary art museum with a slant towards local crafts. They also have a cafe and hands on area. Its not spectacular but is really cool and just super clean. The art is unique and they have a nice thing going. Also its super central so you can just go there between things downtown - you cant beat free museums.
Went to a poetry slam here, it was very well done and we plan to go back
Great exhibit. There was a neat gift shop
Disappointment! There wasnt any Jacob Lawrence or Henry Ottawa Tanner to represent the current event of Black History Month in this Museum.
The Picasso Exhibit is totally on point and worth 9 dollars
Nice building. Zero exposition. In renovation, but still, not good stuff inside
My toddler and I come on fridays for their story, song, and craft time from 10:30-11:15. She loves it. There are a few stories surrounding a theme, the last one was emotions which was great. The craft and the the songs reinforce the theme, which is even better. Overall a great experience for the wee ones. Not to mention an in house coffee shop that serves delicious coffee... and the art, lol, many many arts on display.
I loved the high school art exposition. Friendly service.
Wonderful Picasso exhibit!
Interesting place with some more avant garde offerings.
Love the ever-changing exhibits and its totally FREE!
Great Picasso exhibit
The picasso exhibit rocks!
Its nice to be able to walk through a free art museum, and the staff was really nice and fun. However, the art was mediocre at best, and the exhibits were not well organized or labeled.
First-timer to the Kmac.I attended the poetry slam. Got to hear some really talented and creative poets. Really nice venue
Small museum but some neat stuff. The poetry slam is pretty fun.
Beautiful museum with super-friendly staff. Just amazing inside with lots of space for art. They even have a kids area that our boys loved.
Great art exhibits. When I went, it was free entrance. Educational exhibit. Nice coffee and pastry shop, too.
Nice art chair exhibit
Something different to do
Small museum but interesting and uncommon exhibitions
Very disappointed in items for sale in the museum store .It used to be all the items were from Kentucky artists and the store served as a showcase for many artists. Now it appears that fewer than 20 percent are from the state. Not worth the trip to shop.
I was a little upset because I called ahead and asked if they had wheelchairs available they said yes. So I went with my husband and they didnt have an at all in the building. I feel like that was a waste of time. My husband stayed in the car while I was with our children. It was supposed to be a family outgoing. As the museum goes very interesting the children enjoyed themselves.
Learn more about chairs and its art
Free kids activities. The gallery is more impressive to adults.
Wonderful place to experience art in a whole new way!! They even host spoken word events!!!
They offered a summer camp
They do a KMAC Poetry slam their once a month and its awesome!
The monthly yoga series is a great way to see the exhibits.
Nice free museum
My daughter is 3 and had a great time! I would recommend for children 3-10.
The poetry slam is great
Nice for kids first museum experience. Related art works they could appreciate.
Great as usual - visited between main exhibitions but the Folk Art exhibit was still worth the visit.
Cute craft museum. Great for kids.
Different type of art to see.
KMAC Museum (previously known as the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft) is an American museum located in the West Main District of downtown Louisville, Kentucky, which explores the relationship between art and craft by identifying art as big ideas and craft as the intersection between process, materials and labor.[1] It is a nonprofit organization supported in part by the Fund for the Arts and Kentucky Arts Council, as well as many public and private donors.HistoryFounded in 1981 by Phyllis George Brown, then First Lady of Kentucky and former Miss America, the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation was started to build interest in Kentuckys rich craft and art resources.[2] With the help of Mary Shands, the start of the center began with ease.In 1984 the organization moved into the lower level of a West Main Street building to have more space for things like a gift shop.[2] When the move occurred the west district of downtown Louisville had low occupancy rates for the buildings. The location of several museums like the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft helped revitalize this area of downtown.Since 1984 the organization has presented hundreds of exhibitions, reaching approximately 100,000 viewers and students annually. By 1991 the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation has tried to be a leader in the community of preserving Kentuckys heritage in its arts and crafts. It has held several promotion events to help improve its goal.Over ten years ago the organization recognized the importance of including educational programming as part of their mission. In 1990 the states educational system had been restructured resulting in the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA).[3] The museums educational programs are tightly connected to the KERA goals of combining art education with other subjects such as history, social studies, mathematics and language arts. Over the years, their educational programming has expanded and its focus has continued to increase their work with schools in Jefferson County and throughout the state. In January 2001, the organization purchased two adjacent buildings on West Main Street in the heart of Louisvilles West Main Street Historic District.[citation needed] Built in the 1880s the building is a four-story cast iron structure with a pastel facade and giant windows. After renovation, the facility provides the organization with 28,500 square feet (2,650 m2) of interior space in which to operate, spread over four floors and a lower level. The new facility increased the size and visibility of the Gallery Shop, with frontage on Main Street, and houses three exhibition galleries: the Steve Wilson Gallery, the Mary & Al Shands Gallery, and the Lindy & Bill Street Gallery.[citation needed] The Lindy & Bill Street Gallery, on the second floor overlooking Main Street, is rented for meetings and entertaining. The third floor houses the Education Center as well as a small south facing gallery and the fourth floor is used for administrative offices. The museum is in close proximity to the Kentucky Science Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, the Frazier History Museum and the Muhammad Ali Center, which gives the nickname of the area as Museum Row.
A great place to pick up a gift. Also a lot of family activities.
Interesting.
Great museum that hosts great events.
Very airy and artsy space
Interesting art designed to encourage you to think.
It is an amazing place to host poetry events and amazing artwork.
A great place to spend an hour, good natural lighting and interesting exhibits.
