Really nice museum. A little small but its perfect to manage in a hour with kids. There is a room that has an optical illusion- youre supposed to go in on your own but kids freak out on there by themselves(its not scary, you can just get a bit disorientated), so I would recommend an adult go in with the younger kids 6-8 - kids older can go in together they should be fine. There are a lot of fascinating artifacts and the interesting history of Chinese in California.Quite a few of the exhibits encourage you to slow down and have some quiet reflection time which is also great for the kids as they automatically calm down.
Really interesting museum which a great content about Chinese-American history and the development in the United States. It is a great place to see more about origins and development of Los Angeles and how important has been immigration in this country. If you have the chance to go to this museum, please do it, because it could have a good surprise on the temporary exhibition floor.
Just a note this place stops selling tickets at 9pm and according to the worker there is a limited number of tickets for the even so get there good and early if you want in!
I came here with my three other friends and we had ate too many delicious dishes at this restaurant. Services of this place is really impressive if I would talk about the staff then they are super cool and friendly of nature. We literally worth our time and money. I would like to suggest everyone.
Im only giving it one-star because its closed. Even though Google said it was open Sunday June father day
Cute and modest museum. They have some interesting events like the red envelope party!
We recently made a day of seeing a handful of the small museums in this area and the Chinese American Museum was definitely one of the nicer ones. It is a very small museum and I think could be cooler. The storytelling of the museum could be a bit more narrative and there could be more things for kids to do. The highlight for sure was the Herb Shop room! That was super cool and had things that kids could pull out and look at. The woman who worked there was very nice and informative. While I wouldnt make a day trip to the area just for this museum, this area is CERTAINLY worth a day trip! My toddler and I literally visited 6 museums! There are small museums all around here and almost all of them are free! Start your journey with a walk down Olvera Street! Catch the Avila Adobe, maybe have lunch or a snack. Then walk across the way and visit The Chinese American Museum, the Plaza Firehouse Museum and the new Gateway to Nature (which is a nature center full of things for kids to do). Then walk across the street to La Plaza De Culturas y Artes museum. Maybe poke your head into Our Lady of Angeles Church. Im very Atheist, but this is historic as its literally what named and started Los Angeles. Then continue down Main street and hit up the American Tropical Historical Museum and end with the Italian American Museum! There are a few other things in there too I think I missed. A great day!
Great place to go learn some history, see some awesome art & have a nice experience in a museum.
This place is tucked away from Olvera Street but had great historical pieces. Free admission so stop here while youre checking out the area
Built in 1890 by Philippe Garnier—a French settler and prominent businessman—the Garnier Building is the oldest and most important single structure linking the Chinese community to Los Angeles’ original Chinatown. It is also the oldest and most significant Chinese building in a major metropolitan area of the state, as the original buildings in San Francisco’s Chinatown were destroyed by the earthquake of 1906.
Great museum - youll learn info that isnt well known. Make sure to check out the cool art installations on the 3rd floor! Admission is free too.
Absolutely breathtaking! A must-see! Learn of the struggles of those here before you that build firsthand our railroads that connect us, our city, state, and our nation.

The Admission: FREE!! They do take donations. Their staff is very knowledgeable about the history. The Museum: 3 levels of museum. Lots of information and display. Very educational and informative about how Asian came to America. The museum is very close to Olvera Street. If you are the neighborhood shopping or dining, definitely come and check out this museum. It doesnt cost you anything but you for sure learn something new.
Fascinating museum, we (non Asians) dont know much about California Chinese except that they built the railroad. This museum fills out the story.

Multiple floors. The third floor is the hip hop floor. Lots of beautiful memorabilia and artifacts displayed.
A boutique museum done beautifully.Experience the historical arc of Chinese in Los Angeles and indeed the United States. Exhibits follow their timeline from the early 1800s to today via photos, atifacts, clothing, art and a full-size Chinese Herb Shop.Knowledgeable personnel are available for questions. Its a a 30 - 60 minute stop. Entrance is on the west side of Los Angeles St, about 1/2 block north of the 101 fwy - look for the sidewalk sandwich board sign.
