Fun for kids and adults! Came here on Mothers Day and had a fun time taking pictures of my kids with the cool illusions. We didnt purchase tickets in advance, we walked right in and we were able to get in.The Museum of Illusions is a great family outing. Its kind of small, so you can easily take pictures in each room in less than an hour. This is definitely a place to take a bunch of cool pictures (yes, instagram worthy) full of vivid and amazing paintings.
Well maintained museum with slot of art murals of western era. Murals of the wild Wild West days to the gold rush days. Posters of John Wayne and drawings of Michael Jackson. Western clothes on displays and Michael Jackson’s outfit and white gloves. Even a replica of the western bar and so much more. Prices are not bad, about $12. The museum is usually not busy either.
I went here for the Native American Craft Festival and it was amazing. Its a jurored event so all artists are vetted before entry. It meant that only authentic, high quality art and artists were present. It was amazing to see the art and talk to artists who were keeping traditions alive that were almost wiped out. It was great to talk to and support (and okay, shop!!!) all the art, jewelry, knives and clothes there. Its every year around the end of October or beginning of November and I highly recommend it.
Love the artwalk. I buy all my cool art stuff when the artwalk happens in downtown Los Angeles. They Have everything you can think off...
We had a very good time here with our 9 month old daughter. I wasnt expecting there to be as much for her to do as there was, but the dress-up/movie section was the highlight for us, since being parents is exciting and new, still. The collections here are really incredible, especially the weaponry section. Thats what makes museums so wonderful, seeing objects youve heard and read about firsthand. We went on a Bank of America customer appreciation day, so my husband was free. Check their calendar before visiting, there are various free dates each month.
Loved this place so much to do with the kids highly recommend it’s free if you have a EBT card.
The man who runs Odd Nights at The Autry Phillip Dane has some pretty disgusting opinions about people! I am surprised that The Autry would support such filth. I attached photos.
This was a great homeschool field trip for my 10-year-old son. It had a good variety of exhibits and we both loved the art exhibit of work by David Bradley. The small outdoor botanical garden was another favorite of ours. The garden was so beautiful and serene and it had a lot of learning experiences with signs about plants used for medicine and labels identifying many of the plants.
Its a beautiful museum, but certainly not one of my favorites in the L.A. area. Mostly clean womens restrooms. People leaned over some of the exhibits too far to take pictures and set off the alarms a few times. Our toddlers did not enjoy this museum so much until we went out to the garden area. There were a few areas closed off due to renovations/upcoming exhibitions when we visited (4/10/18).free admission on the second Tuesday of each monthfree parking in their lot or the L.A. zoo across the street has overflow parking, but Im not sure how much their fees are
This museum was filled to the brim with rich history and art! We had an hour to go on the tour and our guide was amazing! She packed as much information as she could with the time we had. I wish I had time to go through and really enjoy each and every part I could have easily spent half a day looking at and taking everything in. They have an outdoor portion which is a great to take a break and enjoy nature and also learn a little about the types of plants.
One of the best museums in the US. The text panels show how carefully-researched each exhibition is. There is a lot of variety in the artifacts on display. The facility is well-designed, accessible, spacious and clean. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The perspective here is inclusive and respectful to the many points of view of various players in the creation of the idea and reality of the “American West.” The exhibitions do not shy away from tough topics. And the graphics and displays help teach more than just basic cowboy history; details on the economics of being a cowboy and what their daily life on the trail was like are included. This is an outstanding place to visit that gives a great introduction to the unique culture of California. Do not pass up a chance to visit! This is a great place to take your family or just visit on your own. Entry prices are reasonable but there are many special discounts to take advantage of. We went on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and it was free admission! No charge for parking. Rental bike station at the entrance. And no charge for temporary or special exhibitions.
Not some big country western fan, but this was a really interesting museum, with lots of historical memorabilia focused on a fascinating slice of American entertainment and the arts & culture of the American west. Lots of stuff about Gene Autry and his contemporaries in films, western shows, music, and popular culture. There were exhibits suited to kids and lots of details including videos and audio presentations for those interested in learning more.
Wonderful, welcoming staff. My BF loves the exhibit of old west firearms. The garden out back features CA native plants In A pleasant area with seating. Nice and large gift shop. The art is well displayed and labelled and lit. Cool gallery for Western movie props. Big parking lot but gets very very busy on free days
Visited the annual exhibition of new works by Western artists. So much fun to see pottery, painting, sculpture in wide variety of styles. The preparation and presentation of the exhibit is also part of the enjoyment. Popped into the other continuing galleries - fascinated by history of the West from the First People to modern times. The food in the cafe is actually quite good, so an enjoyable afternoon. Gene Autry gave us a wonderful gift.
Some many cool old west and western movie themed items. Very nicer display of cowboy and vintage firearms.
A brilliant museum. Small. But peppered with tons of great historical information. If you love history and are intrigued by the unfolding of the west, this is the place for you. 10/10
What we thought was going to be a quick visit has turned into a longer stay to our delight. Temporary galleries were well curated and the permanent Autry inspired collections are a must see.Would highly recommend as a destination to the LA area visitor!
SUCH a fun field trip! My kids loved loved loved it! I even had a great time. The artifacts, the history, and the wonderful David who showed my class around really made the experience one we will never forget! On top of everything, all of my kids have a hearing loss. David also uses hearing technology. Whaaaaat a great role model opportunity for my students. Thank you!
I was not sure what to expect, but it certainly wasnt a museum for young children - they only had one area where children could interact and it wasnt well-kept by the end of the day. It had, naturally, a distinctly Western point of view and wasnt as inclusive of indigenous folks as I would hope for. I probably wont visit again.
This is a great museum with so much yo offer and explore. They did a great job with all of the various exhibits. Provides a wide range of History. Takes a few hours to get through the museum. Definitely does not take up the entire day, you can plan on half a day here. Would love to revisit this place again. If you like museums, it is a must visit.
Great museum with a huge collection of American West memorabilia. You can spend hours here reading all the history about each collection, and still not finish seeing everything in a day.
This place is amazing! Great place to bring the family to get some education on the old west.
Thursdays $15!! What a fun experience. Definitely try to make it to all their shows with the 75ft dome shaped screen. Loved the aquarium. Rainforest was so so but I liked trying to spot all the insects in their camouflaged habitats. Drinks are expensive but strong. We had a great time.
We had so much fun here today. There were so many things even for little ones to do.We had family come out from Louisiana and wanted to visit here. Plus they give military discounts.
We attended for free on the first Saturday of the month since we are Bank of America patrons. What I liked: The several sculptures were good, and the ones of the Pony Express and Gene Autry were great, really capturing the legends. I found several of the displays interesting and informative, e.g., the ones of the chuck wagon and comparative costs then compared to now. The artwork exhibit On Fire: Transcendent Landscapes by Michael Scott had powerful images. What I disliked: 1) Parts of the special exhibit Coyote Leaves the Res: The Art of Harry Fonseca were downright offensive. What is his preoccupation with male genitalia? 2) Too many of the posters denigrate the contributions of anyone with European or Christian ancestry. Where is the tolerance?
Great place to learn some history of our Native Americans and the cowboys. They have a fun activity for the children to actually get into the museum atmosphere, a little detective game where they have to explore the whole museum and finds clues to get a badge. It was a great activity to do with our son and helped us explore the whole museum better. You can also pan for gold!
Very well maintained museum. Attractive for both kids and adults. Ticket prices dont exceed $14 which is very reasonable given the high number of works to see. I visited for only 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon and want to come back asap to finish the museum.
Great staff. Displays are impressive. Much bigger than the outside looks.
This museum is really amazing. All arts and collection from old times. Recommend to visit
Loved it. Great service and tasty food. What better?! We were a party of three and sat upstairs. Every server we encountered was not only knowledgeable and pleasant, but had a great sense of humor too. Ask your servers what they like. We did. And they did not steer us wrong! Ill be back for sure. We had a totally pleasant experience, and I want to go back Asap!
Worth a visit. I went here on New Years Day because its open, and its free on that day. There was plenty of parking and its free. The exhibit was focused on gold which I didnt catch as I literally had 15 minutes before closing. I spent time in the galleries and the artist was really good although the topic very specific. The exhibit focused on Native American casinos and related Vegas, tourism and how its so Hollywood. Interesting slants and visually appealing with good color and composition. The pieces were quite large and focused on the message of commercialized desert spots. The staff was very gracious and the overall space inviting. Ill return when I have more time.
Lots of interesting exhibits and well curated experiences. The green screen studio is especially fun for children, and adults love it too! I especially like the fact the focus seems to have evolved over time away from The West in general to be far more about Los Angeles, its people, wildlife, plants and history. Lets face it, even the history of singing cowboys is Hollywood history based on the idea of The West. Great attraction not to be missed.
Great inexpensive activity, wonderful displays and exhibits. Took a little over 3hrs to appreciate most of the exhibits, and that time went by quickly without notice. Wonderful place for everyone of all ages to enjoy. As a student, I was able to gather first hand resourced information useful for my report. Thank you Gene Autry Museum for a very enjoyable and educational experience. Wipl come again, except that this time Ill bring my grandkids.
Great museum for cowboy/western fans. Lots 9f activities for the kids too.
First time there and i loved it! So much history and interesting exibits, could not read everything in one day. Will be returning. The kids area was awesome, they got to play and have a ton of fun.
Autry routinely has interesting and thought provoking special exhibits. The traditional Gene Autry memorabilia, enhanced by lots more cowboy stuff is fun for kids and adults alike. Easy parking and a friendly staff makes it a great destination for a short or longer visit.
Really fun museum with lots of artwork, artifacts and interactive exhibits for kids and adults. You can even be a cowboy in your own movie. Yeehaw!
Great museum with plenty for everyone. Came here to see their PST: LA/LA exhibit and it was touching and informative. Their Playtime exhibit was very nostalgic and great fun for kids as well. But really, their permanent collections are worth visiting on their own: they have beautiful paintings of the west, the history of different groups movement to the west, western entertainers memorabilia, culture of Native Americans, native plants garden, and live music the day I was there---what more could you want?!If you have Bank of America you get free admission during the first weekend of the month as part of BoAs Museums on Us program.
This place was awesome. The exhibits were engaging as well as educational and informative. Had a great time here and spent alot more time than I thought I would!
I am not a cowboys fan but on New Years day there was free entrance and I had a great time. This place is kids and wheelchair friendly. You can buy food here and some gifts. If you have limited time in LA and you are not a fan of old West culture try to find different activity.
I’ve been here a couple of times. Not only is the museum great but the gift shop is good to go. Also a couple nice eating areas.
It was fantastic on every level, I had no idea it was as big as it is and displayed so many cool things, such as:John f Kennedys presidential Revolver and Billy the kids lever action rifle. A real Chuck wagon from the cattle Roundup days. Not only do they have some real gold on display but you can pan for gold.
The tour was amazing and learned cool things. Our guide was wonderful and explained everything in detail. This was a great experience and I would recommend it to everyone!
Great place to appreciate! Get a sense of history and then get outside to enjoy the day!
Remembered going to this place and I loved it, when a a field trip with my former elementary and middle school classmates a few years ago
We had a great time. We saw dances from Terry and Michael. The playhouse was fun. Ive never been there before and as my first time, it was awesome. My daughter loved it too.
The place was really nice and I was amazed with everything I saw. Its a nice place to bring the family and enjoy the old West. I loved the native American Indian woman who made tiny baskets from twigs. It was really an amazing experience.
Another awesome location to spend with family and learning about the American West and artist. This is right across from the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park. This museum inviting and filled with so many awesome exhibits. I recommend this museum for school age children and older.
Having The Los Angeles County Academic Bowl there. May 28, 2020. Conducted a walk through to organize the event. Wonderful museum!
Absolutely loved it. Its a great experience for the whole family.
Nice museum! Cool pieces and nice variety. We spent about 3 hours there but there probably isnt enough to do to stay more than that. Would recommend!
What a weird museum! The very first thing I saw upon entering was their exhibit (and sale) of paintings and for a second I was like, why am I paying money to enter what is in effect a gallery trying to sell me things? And also I worried it was just going to be paintings, I wanted that real west stuff! Next thing I saw was their exhibit from films about the american west which didnt alleviate my concerns. It all seemed like interpretations of the west. But then I saw their very impressive and actually beautiful collection of guns from the west and that was worth the price of admission. I would have liked more things representing the material culture of the Native Americand but I know that can be problematic given how those things can be obtained as well as perhaps not properly respecting how those objects are to be handled and talked about so dont know if that can be done.
A beautiful museum that focuses a lot on the history of the wild west in both TV and in real life. There are also special exhibits from time to time which are always worth checking out! A quintessential piece of Californian history and a good place to take kids because of all the interesting pieces offered.
Fantastic museum. Great place for old films. The Cafe there is gem. Gorgeous gift shop and always intriguing exhibits. Wonderful outdoor events as well.
The tour guides were wonderful and had a very caring attitude. Our tour guide was exceptional. She went above and beyond her duties by telling us all information about the exhibits as much as she could! She explained in great detail about every single exhibit. I highly recommend you visit this museum! It is very educational and a great way to learn about Westward Expansion!
Best museum to learn the truth about cowboys and native Americans. Lots and lots of information on the reality of those days. You will need a whole day to understand what youre reading and looking at. I was blown away by our history. Dont miss it.
Enjoyed our visit here. Loved seeing exhibits on the history of Hollywood Western movies. They also have a good collection of Remington and Colt firearms. Wish they had a more extensive collection of Native American artifacts, but they still have a lot of old West stuff worth seeing.
Always love this museum. Learn something new every time.
Nice museum. Went to a concert and movie in the park next door. Free admission to the museum included. Cant beat it. Would definitely return.
Amazing museum, it gives you a bigger insight into Californias history. For us European visitors its also very interesting to see the local paintings and art we never even heard of.
The Autry is directly across from the entrance to the LA Zoo. It has the elegance of the most formal museums with an array of interactive displays that make it fun. We had an excellent native guide who took us through a couple of hundred years of natural wisdom and history in just over an hour. The food service didnt impress me. But, you can bring your own lunch.
First time, nice to visit year around!!
I didn’t really like the museum. It felt like a waste of time and it was very boring. The gift shop is cool though.
Every year I used to take my fifth grade classes from the school where I taught. They always enjoyed visiting this museum as it fit so well into our Social Studies curriculum. The docents were amazing. On another trip, I even took my grandson to it. He loved the jail and the chance to ride a horse statue in a movie. I retired six years ago, but would recommend teachers experiencing this with their students.
Great fun in the sun with our little ones
This fascinating museum is located in the midst of the sprawling grounds of Griffith Park. The outdoor garden with its explanation of Western plant life was a wonderful start for us. From there we went through as many exhibits as we could. The exhibits are hands on and appealing to young and old alike. There is much conversation and shared findings between museum visitors. Probably the best hands on activities I have experienced at a museum.
Great way to explore how Europeans got to and took over the west. Great exhibit on the native tribes and their displacement. Coverage of the different ethnic groups which arrived. Tons of artifacts from stone tools and baskets, knives, guns wagons, stagecoach, fire truck. Examples of the ways they all lived. Took the guided tour which was a great way to be reintroduced to all the different areas of the museum. Outer garden area is wonderful. Also an entire area of the rise of the westerns from radio, silent film, to movies an TV. Nice looking cafe for eating, but nothing gluten free. The American Indian Arts Marketplace occurs once a year and is a fantastic event where you can see jewelry and other crafts from tribes throughout the country. There are also demonstration dances and presentations.
Great place to take the family. Across from the L.A. Zoo. Great free parking, good food (pricey, but the portions are big). There was free gold panning for the kids. The only minor bad thing was the cafeteria staff wasnt the friendliest but well survive. Checkem out.
We went to the concert/food truck/and movie night in the grass area near the museum. Good fun, dogs allowed, good for families.
Love exploring their selection! Every 2nd Tuesday of the month is free.
This was absolutely the best museum Ive been to --I thought it was going to be all about Gene Autry but I was so surprised that it was all about the West and of course the western cowboy heroes and their films. The exhibits were so authentic and all the history was explained so well. I planned on being there for an hour and wound up spending over four hours. It was a perfect afternoon! BTW Veterans get in free
Went there for an outdoor movie, great night. The lawn is perfect for this type of event and the food trucks were yummy. Comet BBQ was there and that was the only disappointment.
Really amazing museum. Great to see with friends or family. The tours are great and its right across from the LA Zoo so you could do both.Tons of rich history and artifacts here
This museum offers a lot of exhibits that show a lot of history. Its also somewhat child friendly with some sections having interactive areas.
Typical museum filled with friendly people and yes ART. Didnt have time to throughly check this whole place out, I was here on business. Overall nice large building with many places to see. Very clean and spacious
Im was very surprised by this museum. There is so much to see. From cowboys to Indians there is alot of art. Super cool for kids. Must checkout
Love this museum! They have some of the greatest displays and they really teach you what life was like in the west. Really one of the best museums out there. We have been members for years and go to all of their events
A much improved and more complete story of the West than had been here previously. Thorough enjoyed it. Heading to their Mt Washington Annex next
I went here with my family on New Years since it was free. Honestly, I would have paid to get in! It was such a fun day for us. Lots of cool stuff to see and things to learn regarding the history of the West. My husband especially enjoyed checking this place out.
Went there for the Sizzling summer nightsgreat gathering and music
Wonderful display of western movies and tv: costumes, photos, fun saddle to sit on and be in a movie, interesting exhibits, pan for gold open on the weekends.
This is my first time here so it was completely new to me. I had been meaning to come here for a couple of years now and well i finally did it. Well moving on to what you really came here for. The museum is mainly about natives and the effect that immigrants had on them and their territories. The museum is quite small but that doesnt mean it isnt worth a trip or a few. Everything is well designed. It has a minimalist style in which one can relax while also admiring the many pieces of history wether they be painting or sculptures. One can simply come and get lost in the many section it has. To be fair one days isnt enough to take it all in, so that means that one must come really early and slightly rush through the pieces but once again two days is the best way to experience it. I find this as a great place to relax and learn about the past and the implications it had on other athnic groups.
It was my first time visiting this museum and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised there was more than just Gene Autry memorabilia. They had wonderful displays of native american art and clothing. The baskets are quite amazing what skill and patience to be able to craft something like that. The La Raza photo exhibit was very moving and very well documented. Its a little pricey for a museum, $14 for adults but they offer senior, veteran and student discounts so it wasnt too bad. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours with the family.
Extensive and impressive collections of old west history, movies, culture. Must return to see more!
Great place to enjoy your day was great the artwork lots of artwork and and also have lunch in the cafe the food is excellent
Beautiful museum of Western art. This visit was for a seminar on cruising Alaska. Nice auditorium and.large free parking lot on NW side of Griffith Park, just off 5 Frwy.
It was free entrance so it was fun and perfect. Love it
Had excellent docent tour. Been there many times before. First time with a docent. Learned so much more with docent.
Awesome showcase of the American West. A medium-sized, manageable, airy museum that includes plenty of spots to sit and take it all in. Don’t miss the stagecoach, vast collection of revolvers, or the full scale original saloon. Afterwards, stroll to the beautiful garden (located within the museum) for a bit of solitude next to the mini waterfall. Allow yourself 2-3 hours to fully appreciate this gem of a museum.
The West and the myths thereof are worthy of such an institution. The exhibits range from folksy to serious, with dollops of pop culture.
Perhaps a little off the beaten track for many visitors to LA(and Angelenos too), but its well worth a trip to this area of Griffith Park. Theres an engrossing collection of 19th century artefacts, plus real efforts made to be inclusive and to challenge some of the more insidious myths about how the West was won. There are rolling exhibitions and a great cafe too.
It is a multi-faceted all aged attraction dedicated to all things around the theme of the west. It has a lot of cool interactive features which will entertain the young (and their parents) and the kids wont even mind the fact that they are being tricked into learning things.
This place is GREAT as usual. Love odd nights out at the Autry :-)MusicRides/Massive JumpersAwesome selection of food trucksArtGood energyWhat more can you ask for?
Awesome old west history collection.
We go here periodically. Its great to see the permanent exhibits.
Great museum for a tour and art
