I have loved walking the trails since I was a young child. So many trees, birds, bugs, foliage. It has a wonderfully meditative, serene atmosphere (:
So many good trails, walking/biking/running/horse trails. So much beautiful vegetation and wildlife. Feels like walking through a forest in the middle of the country, can get lost for hours and is never very busy. If you seek a secluded, peaceful hike this is the park for you!
Great place to explore and be in a quiet area with nature. Wished there were available maps online.
Cool place to go out and explore the edge of city wilderness. Vast array of flowering plants in the spring. Excellent place to go birding, see wildlife, ride your horse, bicycle, walk your dog or go on a nature y date. Also a good place to find inner solace and meditation on a self walk. Nice get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Nice little stream, pleasantly bubbly. If walking in spring/summer, wear bug spray. The water is also a mosquito haven.
Beautiful park, and the they keep it maintained well. Just keep an eye out at the parking lot as there is occasional harassment by parked drivers
Much to offer at Wilderness Park. Its Lincolns largest city park. Plenty of parking available in gravel lots, some picnic tables and trash cans. Numerous trails offer different views. Horse trails, biking, hiking.
Too bad I cant find an easy to print map - any recommendations?
Gorgeous scenery. Love this place and it’s always nice getting away from the bustle of the city here.
When heading down the San Gabriel River Trail on my bike, I am always happy when I see Wilderness Park. Just south of the I-5, it heralds that safe passage has been accomplished; the roughest, cutthroatest, homeless encampment-est, likelihood of having some thug throw a broomstick into your front wheel-est part of the trip is behind you... Southbound, anyway. Moreover, since Wilderness Park charges a couple of bucks for cars to park, it tends not to be filled with riff-raff. Bike friendly, clean restrooms, a paved walking path, a couple of small ponds filled with hungry ducks and, if the folks plying the water with fishing rods are any indication, a few fish, Wilderness Park is an emerald gem and a welcome rest stop when youve got the pedal to the... Well, just pedaling.
Get out of town and get lost in nature.
Some reviewers complain about the highway noise and yes, you can hear Rt 77 from the trails, but its not intrusive and you can still hear the *many* birds, the flow of Salt Creek, and the breeze through the trees. It would be a great place for a morning run (but I wasnt willing to drive from my hotel to the trailhead - Lincoln is not a fun city to drive through - very few shortcuts). The Lincoln Parks & Rec website, IMO, doesnt do a good job of telling you where to park - it seems that they expect readers to already know the Lincoln area. I parked at the trailhead on Old Cheney Rd just east of Rt 77.
Wildneress has a multi-use trail system for bikers, walkers/runners and equestrian to share. The trails are all singletrack and great for beginning mountian bikers.. Its great having such a large wilderness area so close to Lincoln. We were looking for a place to walk with our dog and found this place on the map. It was on the opposite side of town from our motel, but Lincoln is small so it did not take long to find. Nice trails in a real woods setting.
Such a lovely place! I love walking around in the early morning and listening to all the birds sing ️
A little more guidance through trail would be nice. But loved it. Did get bit by a spider turned skin blue brought it home guess it was one of the worst very scary b4 careful never had this happen b4.
Camping should be allowed and for free.
Beautiful place to run and hike. Ive spent many, many hours walking back and forth across the trails and Im always finding new places to go. It also hooks up with the bike path system in Lincoln so you can start from here and get anywhere.
Great day for a hike.
One of my favorite places to be! everyone I run into is very friendly. Ive never seen any homeless people like a review suggests. me and friends of mine go out and hammock in wilderness all the time. hammocking doesnt equal homelessness
True Wilderness trail. The trail is well marked. The creek cuts through the trail. The opportunity to explore the outdoor vegetation and animal pathways are undending. Our dog lived the trails.
The hiking trail was off limits to hikers, only for horses or bikes. By the time we figured this part of it out, we were swarmed by about a gazillion mosquitoes. What ever your mode of travel on these trails, keep your mouth shut and douse yourself with bug spray.
Should be open 24/7.
By far my favorite park to go walking in the Lincoln area.
While not completely devoid of the hustle and bustle of city life - sometimes traffic can be heard - this is a great place for a hike. The river views are excellent, and there is a great variety between forest and prairie.
Love this park lots to see and walk or ride
Great trails for the area! Trails could used to be marked a little better and maybe a map at the trailheads. Watch out for bike riders as they tend to ignore the hiking only signs
Best place to go near Lincoln if youre looking for...not the manicured city park look. Still close to some major roads, but tons of trails and winding woods to wander through.
Lots of birds. A little muddy today but it was still a nice walk in the woods.
I always enjoy walking here
Seriously such a great nature walk! Had a deer come running to me, so close I could pet it. Plenty of exploration to be had♡
I love hiking at Wilderness! There are so many different trails and its a great place to zen out.
Very nice area, definitely a plus to have some wilderness this easily accessible in Lincoln. One thing holding this back from 5 stars is, as another reviewer said, the traffic noise takes a bit away from the feeling of escaping the city.
Soooooooo much family fun every season at least 2 times per month for 1/2 day or longer !
Love riding the trails here. Not too technical, but may be harder than a young rider wants to try.
Easy hiking trails in town
Awesome walking on the trails! So much has been cut down but not removed. Makes it look trashy
Not a bad area, but surrounded by noisy highways and streets. Sadly, going for a hike here just feels like a walk around the woods.
Amazing place to hike and bike
Amazing! I really enjoy hanging out with my buddy the witch of the woods! She carries around these chains and she has some really cold wrinkly hands. Anyways though she bakes the best cookies. The best cookies in town! Amazing chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies. I mean wow. This witch lady is a miracle woman!
Jungle with lots of mosquitos
Watch out for the homeless that live in the park found two homeless people sleeping in hammocks hanging from a bridge kinda gave me and my wife the creeps we turned around and ended up leaving. This has been twice now we have seen homeless people living in the park
Loved the walk
Had a good walk along a trail, though trains running nearby can be annoying. Overall, a good option for an afternoon stroll right outside Lincoln.
Kinda hard to follow trails but still pretty good
Its was fun and exciting and a good place to run or jog
Nice area to walk in nature! I just watch a male and female cardinal courting one another!
Nice park
Quiet place relax chill
True wilderness, with paths. Beautiful.
Huge wilderness and a lot of bugs in the summer.
Great walking, bicycling and seeing wildlife trails
Wonderful place to go walk.
Great scenery for photos
