Lovely place to stretch your legs and get some history while social distancing! We went on a Sunday and brought our dog. It wasnt too busy so it was easy to keep away from others. We brought a lunch and hung out on one of the benches to enjoy the cool day. We even saw a few deer!We couldnt initially figure out whether we could drive in past the entry sign since it was so narrow. We only saw cars coming out and thought it might be a one-way. We parked on the side of the road just outside. Turns out you could drive further in, but we didnt mind getting a bit more walking in.
A lot of trails, some easy and some advanced. A lot of historical signs to explain the battle. Very nice park.
Bring your good hiking shoes and a GPS enabled device because this place is a HUGE. The trails are almost too challenging for kids under the age of 10. If your kids isnt used to physical activity, do not test out this trail. The trail was properly marked which made it easier to navigate back to our car after we got lost.
One day I went to this park a few months ago! It was a GREAT PARK! Everything was FINE! If you want to learn about the cilvil war GO TO THIS PARK! Again kuddos to the people who work or made the park!
Beautiful, well kept historical park. Trails are well mapped and marked. Historical points are well made. Be careful on the trails after rain, the footing is slippery and very steep in places.
Civil War battlefield. Beautiful and serene. Easy access to the trail that leads to Balls Bluff National Cemetery and an amazing view of the Potomac River from the Bluff Overlook. We walked along the river and the towering bluff. In the spring, the ground is covered with spring flowers. I enjoyed seeing a carpet of Virginia Bluebells.
Lots of history here, saw a bald eagle flying over the Potomac, was amazing.
Great hiking area. In certain stretches you can walk along the Potomac which is really nice. This is a pack in pack out park, so there are no garbages, toilets, or water fountains. Just nature.
I first visited this park in the mid-90s and we used to park near the cemetery back then. Since then a huge effort has been put into restoring the battlefield to the original condition, providing interpretive signs, and building out a nice trail system. The walk from the parking area is further now but restores the integrity of the battlefield. Dogs are welcome but Must Be Leashed - I saw folks ignoring the rules and jeopardizing our dogs access to the park.
Nice little park, good for a family walk.
What a gem in the middle of Leesburg! I was visiting during the government shutdown so most of the touristy things I wanted to do were closed. This is a state park though. My dogs and I needed some exercise and this battlefield with historical signs along the trails was right up our alley! There was snow on the ground but most of the trails were doable. (I decided against going down the river trail it was a bit sketchy with all the snow) Also there was only one other person there which made it even better.
Really nice place for a family hike and history lesson. My kids are already asking if we can go back again this weekend.
Very nice historical battlefield with wooded land along the Potomac River. Beautiful scene and wildlife watching.
The trails are not marked well. They say it will be visible on the trees as a colored paint stroke is painted but I have been there 4 times and we still do not find the right trails.
Nice park for jogging & walking. Quiet and clean atmosphere.
The park is stunning in the early to mid Fall.*****Its a nice park that preserved much of the history. An outdoors museum that one can walk in at anytime. The walking trails within the forest are nice and since some parts are covered by mulch or leaves even in the rain wont get too muddy.
Best place to visit in Fall it has Nature and History
This was one of the first battles of the war. It was relatively small - only about 4,000 soldiers involved - but the story is well told through placards placed around the small area of the battle. Youll also see the small cemetery with 24 graves where 54 of the battles Union casualties are buried. This is the 3rd smallest veterans cemetery in the United States.
Great place to get out and see history.
Great park with lots of history. They have guided tours on the weekends which are very interesting.
Outstanding battlefield park. Excellent trail along the Potomac River. The trail is difficult in some places. With luck you see a deer. Small National Cemetary is part of the park. Highly recommended.
Nice little battle field park
Lots of history in this area.If youre going to have port-a-potties they need to be cleaned or checked moer than once a week definitely more than once in 3 months.
Great hiking trails very near the town. Some views of the Potomac river and across the river into Maryland. A fair amount of history from the Civil war era.
We hike here pretty regularly. Good trails that are clearly marked and well maintained.
Not much there for a fairly insignificant battle. But its pretty and peaceful. Hard to find
Great trails for walking and hiking
I was here early in the morning and it was just quiet and serene. The hiking trails were great and all the information boards were very well put together.
This park has a lot of history and trails. I hiked the Interpretative Trail what was somewhat well marked. It took me through the main section of the park, and it has a lot of sign telling the history of the battlefield. I walked passed 3 cannons and the cemetery. There are a lot of trails, all named, but the trail map only captures the color of the trails. Wish there was a more detailed hiking map. Some trails appeared to be very well kept, probably because they have more hikers. There was a gentleman at the entrance in the parking area sharing stories of the battlefield and he is the person to take to if you have questions or want to know about future events. There is a portable potty in the parking lot. I would come back again. The park is very clean but be sure to spray yourself with bug spray. I had some organic bug spray with no deet and I still got bitten twice.
Stunning location. Perfect for a stroll, hiking, dog walking...even saw people running.
Great trails, interesting history!
A great outdoor break in the middle of suburbia
Great distance and terrain options for young kids. My 3.5 year olds loved it. It was the perfect level of challenge for them. It felt like a true adventure.
Nice park along the Potomac with shaded trails and historical markers.
Nice trails. It is quite peaceful by the water.
A nice leisurely walk. 1/5 difficulty.
The trails run easy to moderate. Its a good place to go if you just want somewhere wander for a bit of the day, but still be in the city.
Lots of wild flowers in the spring and nice views of the Potomac River. Also great place to trail run since there are lots of hills.
Great historical park that has been developed more and more over time. Plenty to do, and a lot to learn. The walking tour is a must. A very nice place to just walk and relax, and also learn about what happened. A very historic and educational place.
Great trails.
Well marked dirt trails (a few stream crossings) with historical plaques. Also provides porta potties & benches in a few locations. Dog friendly. Views of the Potomac River.
Lots of informational signs, trails could be marked better. Many of the blazes are worn off.
This is a beautiful park, and right inside a neigborhood!! The trails are well maintained and a variety of hiking levels (though nothing too difficult). The views of the river are beautiful. The forest is shaded but not too dense. There are a variety of historical markers for self-guided history, but also weekend guided tours.Only downside: portapottys instead of plumbing, and no water fountains.Over all not a big problem, but important to keep in mind if bringing small children with you, or expecting to spend the day.
Great hiking (relatively short trails), historically significant, and well maintained. Located along the Potomac.
Great, small battlefield. Can visit in less than two hours. Good history lessons to learn here.
Well preserved early Civil War battlefield and cemetery. Nice hiking trails, with color markers, which go by cliff where Union soldiers fell. Trails go down to the shores of Potomac River.
Wonderful place for a walk with the family. The woods are nice, and there is plenty of small wildlife. The trails are well maintained, and there are occasionally historical tours.
Fascinating park with unique Civil War history. 4.5-stars
Lots of trails, and really good info signs.
Good challenging terrain with many river views.
Located on the northeast side of Leesburg, just off Route 15, this VA State Park is worth the visit. A short walk downhill from the parking lot brings you to an open meadow with a small burial ground where Union soldiers are interred. At this point you are about 150 feet above the Potomac River. There are two trails--one to the left, one to the right-- that join up farther downhill just above the river. The trails are well-marked, but steep. There are no facilities other than a porta-pottie in the parking lot, but you are only a mile away from shopping centers with facilities. The park provides several stations where the Civil War events that occurred in the area are explained in detail. A worthwhile excursion.
Lovely park with view of river but can be full of trail detours after heavy rains, when small streams appear everywhere.
Great quiet place for a walk. Beautiful in the Spring.
It offers several trails with relatively manageble anaerobic options. The paths are narrow but accomodating. It acknowledges the historic heritage. With glimpses of the Potomac even when its banks overglow the waterside trail. Its also part of what is hoped to be a contigious PHTA.
Nice. Small, but nice.
In terms of parks, this is a pretty good one for some historical knowledge.
Well documented self-guided tours
Its a nice park for hiking.
Beautiful location.
Great place for a quick hike. Some trails are okay for a jogging stroller, but others are pretty steep.
Great place for a hike. Rolling hills on the Potomac.
Lots of great trails & incredibly beautiful scenery!! This is a great hiking location for the whole family!
Very nice civil war battle site.Nicely laid out with very good interpretive trail with excellent signage so one gets an good sense of how the battle occurred. Its a nice hike in the woods with very scenic view of the potomac.Walk is about a mile on main trail with other side trails
Great hiking trails and a must see stop for the civil war buff. Keep an eye for the ghost of the retreating union solider.
Peaceful place, forest all around good hiking paths. When you visit you can wildlife all around.
Great hiking, quiet peaceful, regional park with good mix of old growth forest. Fishing along Potomac River.
Nice and simple trails. Well kept. Great history.
Lots of trails with lots of shade. The main circuit is relatively flat and pretty easy even for small children.
Lovely. Too bad its about war.
Very quiet...
Muxh more to this battlefield than just a plot of land.
One of my favorite places to go hiking
Great place to take a walk and read about history.
Great placeAlthough have heard of some strange occurrences at night involving supernatural encounters. Might have to check this out
Great hiking trails, and nice historic area
Tour of the battlefield was great and very informative
Great quiet place for a walk or kids education.
History hiking trails and a national cemetery.
Awesome place to visit
Spring flowers, hilly hikes.
Cool hike along the river
Great trails for hiking and running.

Historical park
Nice place to hike
I love this park!
Nice little gem in Leesburg for a walk.
Beautiful
Moving Memorial Day service
Great park
Unbelievable hiking!!!
Far more trails than you expect tucked away near the river

Great trails and scenery!
Nice park on the Potomac
A great stress-reducer close to home!
