Challenging, gorgeous trail thats well worth the $15/$17 park fee (vehicle) alone. Expect to spend at least two hours doing a roundtrip hike here. You definitely have to scramble at some points, particularly towards the end - but youre rewarded with a sweeping vista of the canyon and Vegas off in the distance. A good portion of the trail is in the shade; it can get very chilly with the wind in the winter months so bring an extra jacket and/or a hat!
One of my favorite trails ever. Easy access from a large parking lot with bathrooms. There’s no running water so fill up at the visitor center. None of the trail is paved and is a mix of gravel, desert sand, and rocks. Minimal elevation change of 400ft. Mild-moderate difficulty easy to be challenging but fun for beginners and children. No dangerous drop offs other than the calico view at the end overlooking the view.
Its a moderate difficulty trail, takes about 45 minutes to get there at an easy pace. Well worth the efforts. I would recommend, if possible to do the hike after a day or so of rain. This way, the water level will be higher. Its an absolutely amazing spot. Another piece of advice: do it early in the morning, this way there will be fewer people there. I wouldnt recommend it on the weekend. Way too many people.
This is one of my favorite trails at Red Rock! Starts off pretty moderate with a gravel and red sand trail. Then it gradually increases in difficulty as the terrain changes to large boulders. In some parts you have to climb the rocks. Some areas also have what looks like to be man made steps of large rocks. You might have to get a bit creative to climb these, but its very doable. My 60 year old parents were able to do the trail with a bit of help in some parts. The trail is partly shaded in some areas. At the end of the trail there is a huge pond of water! Its about three miles round-trip. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Great trail, its about 2.5 miles round trip. It starts off flat then gets more challenging with steps and boulders to traverse. Great little lake near the top, and an awesome view over the Las Vegas Valley at the trail end
Wonderful geology there and a relatively short hike that can be completed in less than 2 hours with minimal resting. Give yourself 3 hours in total if you like exploring a bit. The view at the top is worthy of a nice break before heading down
The tank unfortunately is all dried up. Still a great trail to do. If you start around 330-4p, then youll get the sunset and shade. Lol
Love this hike. This was our second time on this trail and its a lot of fun with some spectacular views!
Not the easiest trail for inexperienced hikers, but its beautiful! Kids love scampering up the beautiful rocks!
Great little hike if you Have a short time for a beautiful 2 hr workout !!Look how full the tank is now!!Fantastic hike yesterday!! Deep enough to go in!
Relatively beginner hike with light scrambling. No water during the summer, so fall/spring is the best time to go. Great views along the entire way though.
Speechless and in awe. The only response is to fall down in worship at such created beauty. Thats how I felt after two hours early in the morning. The light was absolutely perfect for photos, and with frozen streams and warm sunlight, it was so beautiful. Would absolutely visit again, but should probably try the many other dozens of trails. Be sure to make time for this trail. It was nearly beyond words.
Really interesting hike to a large water tank at the end of the trail. a very popular heights oh so youll be sharing the trail with a lot of people. not particularly long hike or difficult hike. A good hikes for families with young kids
Beautiful view at the end of the trail. We were on the trail from 7:30-9am, took us about 45 minutes to get to the view and 45 minutes to get back. There was a lot of shade for portions of the trail. Had a great time!
This is my all time favorite trail! You get a good leg workout and the views at the top are amazing.
I take my dog on this trail often. It stays nice and cool early morning in the summer months
This was a great hike with an incredible view at the top. Id say for the more adventurous, as the path was sometimes unclear and required some light bouldering. Will be back to explore throughout the Calico Hills!
Come live the beautiful experience of Red Rock you will not regret it.
Red Rock is a convenient & great spot to enjoy nature away from the strip. Calico Tanks is a fun trail. Some spots get a bit steep for very little ones, but great for school-aged and older. Enjoy beautiful, unique scenery. Tanks fill up from the rainfall. At the end of the trail is a birds eye view of the strip. Bring plenty water, some snacks, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen for typical Vegas climate.
Yes breathtaking & wonderful scenery, fun trails, up down, & easy to follow path & direction & not too far, we come here in the winter a bit snow left over here & there, weather so fresh & good, we agreed this is one of best trails we had, will happy to be back & enjoy spring time
About 2.8 miles out and back. Rock scrambling but the views at the end are Greta. Still warm this time of year.
Easy hike and great scenery
Love this place. Great hiking trail. The beginning (and end) are sand. Our shoes were filled but we didnt mind. We brought both of our larger dogs who didnt seem to have any issues with the trail. We did see a few smaller dogs along the way. You are required to leash your dog, although there was a family up there with smaller dogs who chose to disregard that rule. They provide waste bags for your furry friends at the beginning of the trail. Once at the top there is some pretty views one being the view of the strip. This is my second trip on this trail and it was even better than I had remembered.
Cant believe its just a short drive drive from the Vegas strip. Visited on a weekend so it was a bit busy but really really worth it. Could definitely spend days and days here hitting different trails.
Hiked up the Tanks Trail this weekend. Really enjoyed the hike up. Worth the view at the end!
I would say this is a moderate hike but many locals with school age kids and dogs take it. At one point it is difficult to see the way when a slot canyon is entered. You need to back up about 50 feet and look for the hand stains on the rock face. Go up that face. The climb is worth it since at the top you see a wetlands on top of a mountain in the middle of a desert. How cool is that?
A moderate 1.25 mi hike. Slight rise in elevation with sandstones along the way. The end is a picturesque vista of Las Vegas Strip and Red Rocks. Very popular trail.
Took my two oldest daughters on the Calico Tanks trail (theyre 10 & 11). Was absolutely gorgeous. The view of the valley when you reach the summit is breathtaking.
Great trail heavy footprints
Amazing trail with a amazing view at the end, when you first start theres multiple trails right next to it so try not to get mixed up. You might need to do some scrambling because it gets confusing at times. At the end there is some intense hike work but at the end its all worth it for its fabulous view. Its a medium-hard hike, but the paper says easy-medium hike. During the winter theres a lot of snow and it can get a bit slippery so be careful. Overall a amazing hike.
Absolutely beautiful hike, but dont be fooled! It is quite challenging during certain parts. Lots of climbing and steep rocks. Not a trail for beginners. I would say intermediate.
Great place to unwind and take in the city views.
View are beautiful and diverse thoughout trail.Take your time, take pictures.First third is crushed rock, river bed level walking. Next 2/3 Not easy for people who have issues with knee or ankle issue. Trail has elevation with steps/stairs man made. Difficulty is 5/10 on dry trail, but on snow, rain, ice days Dec/Jan can be slippery thoughout 2nd half. We went in Jan and 1st half was busy with walkers (over 50 people passed), 2nd half we saw less than 10 people. Our group of young teens (enjoyed the snowball fights and challenge of the trail) and 50+ all loved the picturesque backdrops of every photo op. Really took our time by stopping to take in surroundings about 2.5 hours
Love this hike. The climb isnt too bad and the views are incredible
The trail could use blazes, as we had trouble staying on the path on several occasions, but the scenery is gorgeous and the scrambling bouldering sections are fun and challenging with breaks in between.
Gorgeous trail, worth doing! Its only 2.5 or so miles round trip but it took us a little longer than expected - there was some trail finding involved, and a bit of scrambling towards the end that was adventurous with the snow and ice on the trail :) great views at the end.
Love it! Breathtaking views. Challenging trail for kids which is a great thing, my girls loved it! Specially since it had snowed. A bit slippery in some spots. Will definitely return!
Nice hike that involves some scrambling. Great view of the valley and strip at the top. Barely any shade so start early and bring lots of water. Was pretty in the spring because of the flowers and greenery. Took us about 3 hours to hike it with us taking about 20-30mins break at the end.
Fantastic trail with beautiful overlook! It was a but more rock scrambling than I had expected but it was worth it!
Beautiful trail, not toddler friendly. Wouldnt take like stroller. Its a little tricky in some spots. But it was just gorgeous. Lots of opportunity for photos.
Visited during Feb on a cool day (about 40) and was very windy which made it slightly more cold than it probably would have been otherwise. Trail states 2.5 miles round trip with about 400ft of elevation gain and it feels like more elevation even though my GPS confirmed what is claimed. Generally a reasonably easy climb though there is a spot or two where you need to be careful not to fall (some minor exposure). We saw dogs and children climbing it to put in perspective. The trail I found to be fantastically fun and interesting although unless you climb over the lip at the very end the views arent quite what you may expect. Fees are that of Red Rocks and are less so if you have a parks pass. I think we took about 2 hours but didnt stick around long at the top due to the windy conditions. Trail is quite easy to follow just watch for the cairns and where there are multiple tracks in the gullys you really cant go wrong because youd need technical gear to climb out of the canyon.
Nice little trail with the basin at the end. Easy rock scrambling. Do everyone a favor and knock over the decorative cairns along the way.
It was very pretty! The hike is much more difficult than we thought it would be!!
Great hike super early when there is no traffic but too touristy. Search out better less traveled trails.
Its so beautiful! One of my favorite place to hike!!
Nice trail, plan to go with at least 3 hours to enjoy the hike, it gets step
One of my favorite trails at Red Rock Canyon.
Great trail, a little challenging but definitelyworth
Absolutely beautiful views. Be aware, the main road does not loop around to the entrance.
One of our favorite trails in Red Rock. The view at the end is spectacular.
One of my favorite hikes in Red Rock. The view change drastically while you hike. Also, there are loads of places to take a break if anyone needs it. At the peak, by the tank, you have a great view of the strip.
Moderate to difficult hike with rocks and boulders top contend with, but well worth it.
Very pretty, not too diffic hike!
Hiking on the Calico Tanks trail was one of my favorite parts of our visit to Las Vegas! It can be hard at times to tell where the trail is going, but if you follow the gulch you will eventually make it to the Calico Tanks. We hiked there on June 7th and there was no water in the tanks. If you are able to make it to the back side of the tanks, there is a phenomenal view of the entire red rock canyon park!
Very good Trail. The trail was very beautiful. Some parts of the trail you must climb or do some upward lunges. Any average active individual can complete. Would not recommend for some one who is sedentary. Be careful with the Tanks they are very Calico!!!
Beautiful trail. Best to go when it isnt HOT.
This is an awesome trail! You can climb on so many rocks and have to on some parts to continue on the trail. The view of the entire valley at the end is breathtaking!
Take the hard route. You might die, but youll go out happy
Good Hike. Great weather, that day and the view of Las Vegas when you get to the top was breathtaking. Definitely coming back
This is a great little hike. easy to moderate difficulty with some really great views and a wonderful vista at the end.
Need to know info:1. Wear sturdy shoes or boots as the trail is 99% climbing or treading on rocks.2. The trails are not marked and its easy to get off course. You need to pay close attention to where you are.3. Take drinks and a small snack to give you evergy. As even though its less than 3 miles it felt like double that. It can be scary in some areas as the rocks are high and not a great deal of foot space.4. I highly recommend hiking with a trail mate. They can give you a hand up and you them.5. Awesome scenery!**6. When you get to the tank (body of water) take the high path up the hill. If you go straight on you are stuck to get through small ledges on the side of that cliff. Which I managed but very difficult to do if you are short like me. Im 526. Taking animals and/or kids under 12 is not recommended if you want to get all the way to the top.7. Lots of photo ops.8. I think climbing on wet rocks would be foolish9. The hike can take 2 hours 1-way if you stop and take pics, get off tail, and are not in peak physical shape.10. Keep your pack light. Itll be easier on you.11. Have fun! Its an interesting hike and very popular. There were lots of people and I went on a Monday.
Loved it! 4 kilometers of trails and bouldering in a gorgeous park!
This is a gorgeously, trail good for all ages most, of all the climbing in elevation, can be done on natural staircases. In the spring months, it ends with a view of the city, and a water tank, the pool dries up late summer, and into the winter.
Some degree of challenge especially if you try different routes. Hard to know where the trail is as you get further up. Look for worn areas on the rocks if you can. Bring water and dont wear sneakers. You want to stick not slide.
One of our favorite hikes in the Las Vegas area. Highly recommend!
Great hike to wonderful view. Wouldnt recommend for small kids or elderly, but its very doable.
2.5 mile hike round trip. Light rock scrambling. Plenty of spots to stop for shade. The tank is usually empty but there is a great view of Las Vegas just past it. Bring water and a hat.
Easy and fun hike with beautiful views, and dog friendly!
Nice moderate climb to a view of the valley. Worth the work.
Get tanked at the tanks
Lots of tourists who kinda jam up the paths. Old folks with canes and the like. Not opposed to trails with tourists but not my favorite.
Moderately challenging short (2.5 mi round trip) trail. Varied terrain w/ 500 ft elevation gain. Beautiful canyon scenery. Theres some scrambling & bouldering otrail. Before reaching the top of the trail, youll reach a high plateau overlooking a small, inviting canyon lake below & also enjoy the beautiful views of the canyon where you came from to reach this vantage point. Continuing on for another 15 min you can reach the end of the trail which is a pretty high vantage point to view Red Rock Canyon valley & Las Vegas in the distance to the east. Behind you is the Calico Tank Canyon & the taller snow-capped mountains. There are plenty of opportunities to capture awesome landscape pics. Lots of places to stop, rest & snack & enjoy the surrounding beauty. If you like a little challenge, scenic views, peace & quiet you will enjoy this short hike. Its a surprising little gem of a trail.
I absolutely love this trail. It was a nice hike. Beautiful scenery.
This is a great quick hike, easy for all ages and dog friendly. The end over looks the city.
Amazing Place fun place to go on a trail. Beautiful scenery
It Was wonderful hike
One of my go to hikes within the Red Rock Canyon 13-mile loop. Panoramic view of Vegas awaits you at the end. In spring season there is water in the “tank” and sometimes a waterfall during or after rains or when the snow runoff is happening from higher altitudes. The “tank” may be dry in other seasons. Most people choose to hike this out and back, but it does connect up with other trails if you might choose to have a longer hike or more variety.
Beautiful trail! Views of the area are amazing
Gorgeous and clean, not too crowded. It was nice
Trails for beginners to experts...Beautiful views, and so many options you got on trails and rock scrambling
The trail is not well marked for the first timer. At a few places it can be confusing on where I should go. However, the scene was very nice, especially at the end of the trail.
Great trail that ends with an incredible view. Involves a lot of scrambling and rock-stairs if any kind of mobility limitations.
Really beautiful trail, not too hard. I would recommend to do that if you are in area.
Beautiful trail with fun boulder scrambling. There are a lot of side trails, but most all merge back into the main trail. Beautiful views at the end. This is a very popular trail so go early if you want solitude.
This is a more difficult trail because of the rocks you have to scramble over. Not very steep though. Great views of the city
View at the end gives a better view of the strip
Great views
The trail was pretty tough but accurately listed as moderate. We hiked out in May and the tanks still had water in them.
Rocky trail, moderate difficulty, gorgeous views within the canyon
Great for a short or long hike through some scenic canyons. As a warning though the trails can be strenuous. Anyone with knee, ankle, or for issues might wanna skip it as some climbing may be involved in some places. The canyon is amazing to see though.
This is a gorgeous moderately easy trail good for all ages. Most of all the climbing in elevation can be done on natural staircases. In the spring months it ends with a view of the city and a water tank, the pool dries up late summer and into the winter. Great place to spend a few hours outside with the family.
One of my favorite hikes in the valley
Loved this hike. Definitely a little harder than the moderate rating you see online. Some high drops where you climb and if you take a wrong turn, expect to do a little bit of rock climbing. Took the family here and everyone expect my dad and I bowed out.
Nice trail with a variety of surfaces and challenges.
My got meditation spot
