We recently took our two pups here and we absolutely loved it. Be aware you do have to have a yearly pass for the county dog parks or pay a daily fee which you can do on your phone. We are definitely planning to get a year-long pass for 2021 since the passes are for the calendar year. Everyone we met was friendly and the area was spacious and wide open. The water access is gated so you can choose to let your dogs go there or not. Overall, this is a great place to bring your dogs to burn off some extra energy.
We try to go daily with our two pups. Gorgeous setting and a safe space for the dogs to run free and play. We adopted two hyper dogs at the beginning of February and this park is exactly what they needed. They’ve made plenty of friends and have an awesome time. And we love walking through the gorgeous surroundings. Great place for our two monsters to get rid of some of their extra energy. Grateful we found this place and bought a permit. Bonus: swimming for our one monster who loves the water and he loves popping in and out of the tall prairie plantings. This place has saved our sanity.
Beautiful, expansive dog park with miles of walking trails and a swimming feature. Be warned though these guys are NOT kidding about the parking payment, we were 20 seconds away from getting towed! Weve just moved here and didnt realize that you have to pay at dog parks, thats really strange and most other states dont do that. Lesson learned. That being said, even though $20 per day is extortionate for parking, savage actually considering there are no other dog park options, the season pass seems to be a reasonable price (although the website makes it very hard to tell). Thankfully, we got lucky and got back to the car just in time to avoid the tow truck Besides that we had a super enjoyable experience!
I love this place! I drive almost an hour one way to bring my handsome furbaby here. The water is beautiful, the people are nice, the trails are not that long but they still give you a hiking feel! definitely worth the drive & money!! Dont Hesitate about it.
Love this park! Its enormous and the water portion in fenced off so if you dont want your pup getting wet, he wont. Its $10 for a daily pass, but if you plan on going more than a few times, better to get the annual pass. People do a pretty good job at picking up after their pets.
Great place to bring your pup. However, know there is greater risk of injury to your pup as there are burrs, mud piles, and other dogs compared to other dog parks.Make sure your dog has good recall and commands before wandering around. Also keep watch because some dogs can slam into you and knock you over. There’s a dog washing but it’s closed due to Covid. I took my dog to a nearby self wash station to clean up. Parking is $20 for non-residents and you pay using an app.
We love coming here to let Ruby off leash to play with other dogs. We have never had an incident with another dog or owner. Very clean - everyone we encountered picked up after their dogs. Separate gate to access pond for some swim time for the pups. We can always find a parking spot even on the weekends. 100% worth the permit fee. We will be back soon!
Great place to take the dogs to get some quality exercise and its a beautiful place to walk them. We have one avid swimmer and one avid stubborn runner. FYI while fenced there are areas at the water where they can walk around the fence and get into the Forest Preserve that isnt part of the dog park. The Preserve is also a gorgeous place to walk them on leash.
We took our dog here today, and she loved it. Even though it wasn’t our first time here, the experience was phenomenal! I WOULD RECOMMEND!
Prairie planted trails, multiple beaches, dogs can swim, chase, wrestle, lounge... were here every weekend and it makes all the difference for our dog. They do a great job of maintenance.
I love this place and so do all the dogs I ever see there
Awesome! My dogs had a blast...and my wife and I got a ton of exercise too.
So happy to have found this place! My dog adores coming here and running off-leash, and its a lovely walk in nature for both of us. There is a large open field, many trails, and a lake that is fenced off should you not want your dog to swim. (Once in the lake area escape is possible, as shown in the photo.)It can be very muddy depending on weather, so waterproof shoes are good. My guy can get filthy so I bring shampoo and rinse him off at the water pump/hose near the entrance during warmer months.
This is our dogs favorite place to run, play and socialize. He has a great time every time.
Love this place! Lots of space to go on an alone hike with you and the pup, orrrr get into the crazyness with the pack! Cant wait to come back in the fall and winter! Everyone was very nice and communicated well if the doggos got too rowdy.
Unbelievable place to bring your dog. But pack an extra pair of boots and towels. Its quite muddy
Amazing and an absolute must go! Prairie Wolf Dog park is amazingly fun not just for the dogs but for the people as well. Its $20 for non-residents and you need to get your pass a couple of days in advance and you need to have medical information. We have come here twice with our dog and he loves it. There is so much room for them to run and play and really be off their leash. There are tons of little trails to walk with them. The biggest attractions though by far are the little pod entrance beaches. All the dogs collect there and they all have so much fun. There is room for them to run, wrestle, play, tons of tennis balls to chase and the lake for them to swim in. My dog isnt big on swimming but when we are here he loves the water. He chases the tennis ball out and brings it back. Everyone who comes here is incredibly nice and everyone is there for the dogs. The park is well maintained, plenty of shade, space, and things to do. The only thing about this park is that there arent really any places for the dogs to drink water besides what you bring and the lake water. Besides that I highly recommend this place as a must go for any dog lovers.
Great place, relaxing for both me and my dog. Its essentially heaven and he cant wait to go each week. Great variety of dogs (more on the large side) but they are generally quite friendly and social. Membership cost is high for out-of-county residents but the park is unique so it can definitely be forgiven.
I love Prairie Wolf!! My border collie has tons of energy and the Chicago dog parks just don’t cut it for him. Prairie Wolf has plenty of space for him to run around and swim. And it’s always a joy for me to get out into a wide open space (nice change of pace and scenery from city living).Only cons are the price (kinda steep for those outside of Lake County) and the fact that the park get SUPER MUDDY for days after rain or snow. Definitely doesn’t stop the dogs from having fun though. Wear some rain boots and accept that you’re going to have to give your dog a bath afterward, and just enjoy the mud!
Very well maintained dog park and it is HUGE!
Been coming here for years. Well maintained.
Very nice, lots of places to explore with your dog.
Great place really fun, and you dog will love it too
A great place to play with your dog. There is a pond in the back for water loving dogs. In front there is a puppy training area and men/womens pit toilets. It does get very muddy after rain. While Im sure they are there, we have not had any tick issues. You need a parking permit or pay a daily parking fee. Yes, the lake county forest preserve police do patrol the area.
Love this place. Be prepared for mud and dont crowd the water fountain. Beyond that, let your dog of the leash and enjoy the walk ( ◜‿◝ )♡
Nice outdoor space. But trails are muddy and messy. Also its not free which is too bad. Hopefully they use the money to improve the trails.
Went on a cloudy Saturday in April around noon. Daily permit for us non residents was $20. It was good for 8 hours. There was a police official parked in the lot so assuming they will check to make sure you have a permit. There was anywhere from 20-30 dogs, but its pretty spiratic youll probably only be around 10 dogs at most at one time. Most of the time we were in groups of 3-4 dogs as our dog kinda did her own thing and really wanted to sniff and explore the fields. Two ponds available if your dog likes to swim or play fetch in the water. Those areas were happening with 5-10 dogs. All the dogs and people were friendly. There are bathrooms. And a hose to wash off our dog before you leave. Your dog will get muddy and so will your shoes so definitely wear waterproof shoes. We will be back!
Dog Mecca. Travelers come from near and far to grant their puppers freedom from the leash. We make a few treks up from the city each year and our dog loves it. There are a couple of dog beaches and wide variety of all off leash, fully fenced in trails and open play areas. There is plenty of space so I’ve never seen any aggression or doggo dust ups. The people hanging there have always been friendly and cool as well. We haven’t run into any of the rude, careless dog owners in our journeys here like we often do at the smaller city parks.Make sure to pay your dues. The lots are patrolled by security regularly and the fees go to a good cause as they maintain these parks really well.
Fantastic place to let your dog off leash and go for a wonderful walk in nature. Though get ready to get muddy while the snow melts or if it just rained.
Liked it, so open and spacious, but needs better upkeep and more benches
So amazing to have a place to explore off leash with my dogs. The park is always clean, and other dog owners are always respectful.
Great place to take your dogs for off leash play. Also have a good sized pond on the east side of the park where dogs can swim. Permit required. Check with Lake County Forest preserves for rates.
This park is huge! The dogs love it, and now the poochies are sleeping exhausted at home. This will turn into a weekly tradition and the annual membership is VERH worth it if you visit more than a few times.
Excellent dog park. Most owners are very responsible. Well maintained.
Nice dog park with a lake for dogs to cool off in during the hot summer months.
Wonderful huge area for the doggies
Pure leash-free romping. Great dogs and owners too.
Good wide open space for the dogs to run around. Gets real muddy and icy so wear boots!
Great place for your dogs to run around. Well kept
Very intricate park with many open spaces and a big trail. There are multiple ponds for dogs and a great place in general
Love this dog park! There are trails and dog beaches and plenty of space to just let your dogs run and roam.
Claims you need a permit to enter the park.Nice park though the humans werent so friendly.
Wow!! This place is amazing! Even on a cold wet muddy March day we had a blast with our dog. Can’t wait to go back.Day pass is $10 for Lake County res, and $20 for Cook. I will absolutely get an annual pass!
Great clean park to enjoy with your furry friend! My husky loves this place and all the doggies she plays with!
Best dog park in the Chicagoland area!
Great place to let your dogs run free and meet other furry friends
This is dog heaven. Lake County residents buy an annual pass. Non-residents can buy a day pass for $10. They do check for stickers/passes - Ive seen the forest preserve police there almost every time I visit. My dog (22lb golden-doodle) loves it there and weve never had an issue with aggressive dogs. Theres a pond for dogs to play in, plus trails galore. This is a gem of a park.
This is a beautiful park to take your dog off leash and let him or her play with all of the dog friends that are there. The people are really chill and relaxed and theres even to beaches for the dogs to play in! Wonderful place.
This park has tons of well maintained trails if you just want to walk around with your dog; there are also huge open areas for dogs to run and explore. Some of the park is marshy - so your dog might come back pretty muddy, but there is a dog wash area near the entrance. My dogs absolutely love this park.
Always a great time, but they need to do a little maintenance. Only one main path with gravel (which needs to be replenished) and the rest of the paths are dirt... Or mud most of the year. Would love to see some gravel added to these other areas. Dog is super happy as always though!
Multiple acres of forest preserve open to off leash dogs and their owners. Small trails that cut through prairie grasslands, trees, and lead to a lake where pups can swim and play. There is also plenty of flat fielded space for dogs to run like crazy. Awesome place for people who love hiking with their best fur friends!
Miss this park dearly. Dog loved it.
Great place to exercise dogs. Reassuring in the winter that the frozen lake is fenced off.
#DogParty! This is our favorite Dog Park. Beautiful, wide open space, lots of trails, two beaches for swimming pups. Always meet the nicest “dog-friendly” people. Big enough to be alone during the week if you want.
Large exercise area for dogs. Off leash. Run by Lake County. There is a fee either daily or annually and it is enforced. Large pond with two small beaches. Kept pretty clean considering. Most dogs and owners well behaved. Tends to bigger dogs but some smaller.
Love this park almost as much as my dog does. Huge park with separate fenced areas, a small beach, and more leash- only trails beyond the main park. Be sure to get a permit though, the ranger checks all the time and tickets people, and Ive heard hes a dick about the whole thing too (threatened a friend of mine that he, could still give her a ticket because her permit sticker wasnt in exactly the right spot
It is such a fun day for all of us. Theres something for everyone. 2 lake access areas for the dogs to swim, Prarie to roam around in with great wildflowers and a small wooded area.
Great 40 acre are with multiple paths and terrains. Nice pond with 2 separate beaches.
I consider this Dog Heaven. Absolutely gorgeous and huge!
Love it here!!
Greeted by a pawfect furiend.
You wont find a better dog park in northern Illinois. Its well maintained, beautiful, huge and open year round. Just be careful coming shortly after it rains (or the snow melts) because you and your pup will definitely get muddy! As long as you come when its dry, or come prepared when its not, its a great time! There are areas with and without water, separated by gates, so you can control the experience a bit for your dog, too.
This place is great. Its HUGE and there is a large body of water for the dogs. Its completely fenced in and the doggies can run to their hearts content. Love going. As with every dog park, its a collection of ill-behaved dogs but the grounds themselves are great.
One of the best parks in the city
Great for doggos
A nice place with two small dog beaches, washing station, and plenty of room. The park is prone for mud pits and mosquitos in the summer.
A must see if you have a dog and live in the city. Its an absolute life saver!!! Just remember a towel! Also pro tip head to pet supplies plus afterwards and you can buy a ten pack to self wash your pooch! No brining that mess back to the condo
This dog park ate my son
Love this dog park for our 55 lb lab mix. Fantastic swimming, sniffing and running space!
$20 to walk your dog in a forest preserve, save your money and go to a real forest preserve or the beach.
Great play to take the dogs for play time! Beautiful and very well maintained
Lot of area for dogs nice people
I’d heard about this place for years and finally visited recently. It’s a hike from the city, but it’s totally worth it: free-rambling puppies and dogs bound all over the meandering trails, low, dog-only branch canopies, and ponds. The grounds are well-tended without feeling too manicured or and have a wild quality without being ignored, dirty, or unattended.
Nice place to let your dog run but be careful it will get mud on paws soon.
This is a gem. Get your dog nice and tired here.
My dog and I enjoyed our visit to the dog park.
The park itself is wonderful, this review is a warning to non-residents who pay at the kiosk. While you are in the park the rangers will place a ticket on your car claiming you did not pay the entrance fee even when you did place payment in the box. On top of the $20 cash you deposited they will ticket you for $85 then tell you that once it is written you must go to Lake Villa to request a court hearing. So the park rangers are running a racket to make money off of non-residents not able to dispute an erroneous ticket knowing traveling 2 hours to request a day off and then also to dispute in court will cost you more than the ticket amount. Only go here if you buy an annual permit!!! BTW - this was our first visit and I loved the park and would have bought an annual permit had not this ridiculous circumstance come about. Im not cheap and fully support parks departments and always pay the entrance fees as i believe they are important to our communities. Ill take my $$$ and pup elsewhere in the future.
Very nice dog park. Only downside is that you have to pay a fee to use it. Though the fee covers 3 other locations as well
Amazing place to hike around with your dog! Leash free and very friendly, will definitely be back!
Current pricing : $10 for Lake County, IL residents and $20 for those outside of Lake County, IL.Can get very muddy, but also has a main gravel path you can follow to the pond. Mostly larger dogs (above 40 pounds). Bathrooms are essentially permanent porta-potty style (in a wood structure and not the plastic room of death) and they provide hand sanitizer. Wash area to rinse muddy pups off. A couple smaller training pens close to the entrance are great for letting a dog burn off some steam before joining in the fun with all other dogs. Lots of friendly people who keep an eye on their dogs (we only ran into one couple who didnt seem to realize their dog was a bit over excited, but one out of the 30 or so dogs we saw isnt too bad for such a large park).Definitely being exact change if youre paying at the gate, remember a pen to fill out the little parking tag and payment envelope, and I strongly suggest a bottle of water for your dog since theyll be getting hot and thirsty having a ton of fun with their new buddies! Many people bring chuck-its to play fetch with their dogs.
Love this place, maybe more than my dogs!
Great place 3 seasons of the year. It can be a mess of mud in the spring, though. Wear mud shoes.
Love this doggie park with a small lake for the pup to swim. Too bad its kind of expensive to get in if you are not from Lake County
Great dog park with lots of trails and a pond for dogs to swim in! Admission is $20 for non-lake county residents, $10 for lake county residents. An annual membership can also be purchased.
Awesome dog park. Clean, well maintained, and huge. Great mix of terrain for the dogs to play.
Great, off leash open lands and trails. Big lake with 2 beaches
Great place to let the beasts get some exercise! Much busier on weekends.
Fun for all, but not on a muddy day!
Great open space with fence for dogs with entrance to lake, great way to do a quick walk with dog off leash, need to get permit but can either do it on-site or online
