It is a beautiful place of history, heritage and Hawaiian royalty. Sept 16, 196 yrs ago queen Keopūolani died and became a christian. This we celebrate her life as our queen of Hawaii nei.

The churchyard at Waiola Church is the final resting place for most of the Hawaiian Royal Family and is widely recognized as Mauis first church. Queen Keopuolani was baptized at Waiola on September 16, 1823.I have been attending Waiola whenever Im on island since the early nineties. Although I live 2600 miles away and seldom visit more than once a year, Waiola has always made me feel like ohana (family). Aside from its rich heritage and historical importance to Maui, Waiola Church is an integral part of Lahainas present -- providing both spiritual guidance and cultural insight to all who visit.

Waiola United Church of Christ (UCC) was the church of the Hawaiian Royal Family when Lahaina was the kingdoms Capitol. Many are buried in the adjacent cemetery. A lovely service both spoken and sung in Hawaiian as well as English each Sunday in a tropical setting where the walls slide open to allow the breezes to flow through. Music is with guitars and ukuleles.

Wainee Church now called Waiola Church, this was the first stone church built in Hawaii. It was originally constructed between 1828 - 1832. It has been rebuilt multiple times, once after the 1858 windstorm, which blew off the roof and dropped the church’s bell a whopping 100 feet away. It stood again until 1947, when a fire took its toll, and then again in 1951 after another ominous windstorm. In the back of the church yard is a row of some of the oldest palm trees in Lahaina.
