Tricky to find but an amazing look into past cultures and people groups.
So cool! Petroglyphs are not something that springs to mind when I think of Hawaii, more likely the Southwestern US. It was quite amazing though to stand under them knowing that hundreds of years ago ancient Hawaiians were carving these into the rock face. The surrounding area is also super beautiful with some truly amazing views!
IMPORTANT: Do not follow the residential road climb to top of the hill as we did. You wont see the petroglyph and would instead be hit by a strong manure smell from a nearby farm. The drawings are at the bottom of the hill, on the west side. Check out the marked map spot below to follow a small dirt road passing a small hut.
Very significant cultural/historical site but hard to make out from below. Its a quick stop but theres much more to learn about.
You can drive right up to them but I recommend parking down by the fruit stand and making the walk all the way up to the overlook. The petroglyphs are fairly impressive and bring a camera with plenty of zoom to get clear images. My phone took decent ones, as shown.Keep hugging the cliff and spiral up to a spectacular view and imagine what the ancient Hawaiians saw.
Out of the way, but worth a quick look if you have extra time.
Lots of scenic hikes close by. Petroglyphs appear the more time you spend with the rocks.
Really cool that you can still see these carving. They havent been preserved very well last sure to the weather and vandalism their quality isnt great. But still cool to see. Theres definitely more than one, but you have to look for them.
Super cool piece of history in a random place
Short drive off the highway. Easy to find and see.
Awesome experience, and way easy to get to. Its right off the main road on a gravel path. You can drive along it, but I suggest going very slow otherwise you might miss them. Plenty of drawings to see right from your car or truck, something I suggest to anyone. The surrounding land is beautiful as well, but beware of the stink from manure!
We went too far down the road, you have to take a left off the main road toward an older home. The road is dirt but easy to drive a car and then you pass what looks like an out house and there it is on the right side. There were signs all over saying to not climb around so we didnt. It wasnt like a zoo or aquarium in terms of entertainment, but it was an easy historical stop!
Some humorous graffiti added to these... people still want to make their mark I guess.
Nice historical site. Pettoglyphs are a bit difficult to see. Most are faint but worth the hike none the less.
The Petroglyphs are on the north side of the grassy hill. They were not the easiest to locate at first. I hope this description will help.We initially thought the petroglyphs were at the top of the hill, so we hiked the lava-gravel road to the top of the hill. However the only item there was a Geodetic Survey Marker. (photo posted)Then we came back down the lava-gravel road and took the well worn, but narrow knee-high vegetation path down the hill. This looked like it was not going to take us there, until we got to a gravel road. We took a left at the gravel road, and the petroglyphs were there about 100 feet away from the path and up on the north facing cliff face. There are warning signs not to go up to the cliff to the petroglyphs, other signs of welcome have been ripped down - I assume by the locals. When you look up the hill, there are around 4 concrete block structures at the base of the rock face. The petroglyphs are located on the cliff above those structures. We did not walk up to the cliff face, but I would guess some of the designs are 12”-18” tall.Hope this helps you adventurers. Remember to leave only foot prints and take only photos.Mahalo!
Great area to explore!
Amazing to see this porce of history
Far away from the maddening crowds and resorts we can know where others have come before.
No hike required, drive and park next the rock wall and look up... some carvings damaged but still there...
Really beuitiful scene awesome place going back to take pictures at it private property so please don’t littler and be respectful.
Fascinating glimpse into two or three hundred years into the past. If you visit Maui, I highly recommend taking an hour or two and seeing these Petroglyphs.
Not sure which petroglyphs are real.
Cool to see, but a bit underwhelming.
Hard to find, but worth the hunt. Very cool.
So cool to see. Kids loved it
Not much to see, poorly marked, bad road.
Be sure to take the first gravel road to the left, then keep right. See picture
Must see on Maui and it is free
Not easy to find, but worth it. Turn left at the first gravel road and then follow it to the right, past the abandoned looking brick shack. Youll see the cliff wall on the right a short distance up the road.
Super easy walk.
