We had a great surf lesson with Jason. He obviously not only knew how to surf, but knew how to communicate with his students. He was a great teacher. We were able to catch several waves and wouldn’t have been able to learn that fast without him. We’ll be back when we visit again. We’d give them 6 stars if we could!
I can not say enough wonderful things about Mikes!! My daughter had a severe allergic reaction prior to our lesson. Aina worked magic and helped us reschedule twice, during spring break (super busy) and so much more behind the scenes with us when we arrived. Once we got there, we werent treated as clients, but family. Every single instructor that we came in contact with was amazing and Patrick, our instructor, was beyond what we could have hoped for. I can not write in a review everything this place did for us during and after my childs allergic reaction, but I will tell you as a mom, they put me at ease and made me feel so comfortable there. I will never forget this experience and how strangers made us feel calm in the middle of our storm. The surfing lessons themselves were fabulous too! We felt confident with our instruction and stood up with ease on our first runs. Many of the schools arent as concerned with safety in the water. Patrick was very adamant about safety and we were never in danger of collision, that many others, were because of this. This really is the place to be! Great lessons, great people, great experience!
Super bunch of guys. Had us surfing on the first wave. I highly recommend the Surf Shack. Going again tomorrow to rent boards this round.
Lahaina Surf Shack really offers the quintessential laid back surfer vibe and I successfully got up surfing during my lesson!!! Service was unique and memorable, however; I was disappointed with the group lesson and will gladly pay more money the next time around for a private lesson. Just beware, if you purchase a group lesson, you will be standing on the sidelines more than actually catching waves. We had about 30 minutes of instruction on the sand, then a little over an hour in the water and within that hour, I only was given 4 attempts with the instructor. All in all, a memorable experience with fun people!!
Had a terrific time! Highly reccomend these folks. We had a group of 6 lesson with young and old and we all surfed and enjoyed our experience. The instructors were thorough and everyone received quality one on one time out in the waves.
We booked our surfing lesson on short notice, but the people here worked with us and we had a great experience! Prices didn’t seem to be the cheapest in town, but they are still very reasonable. Our surf instructor, Nina, was insightful, fun, and taught well. Thanks Lahaina Surf Shack!
Ricky took us out last minute, he got all four of us up surfing, from a 10 year old to myself whos pushing 50. Hes a pro and knows how to instruct. Thanks for a memorable day!
Great establishment to take your 1st time surf lesson! :) Nina (surf instructor) was GREAT!I flew in from out of state & last-minute wanted to take surf lesson. Lahina Surf Shack was amiable to work with out last-minute plans. They even watched our stuff while we were surfing (and had no one to watch our gear). They have everything you need, just bring yourself & a hunger to learn something new. :D Aloha!
This shop demonstrates great aloha to their customers and the people in their community. They have a large collection of boards for every level of surfer and also rash guards and reef shoes and a shower. Had a great lesson with Makani. Very convenient free parking lot across the street. Nice break within walking distance where they do their lessons.
Great time out with Ricky! Semi private was a great way to learn how to surf. Staff were totally friendly and helpful. Truely seemed to care. Small shop and very personable. We felt like we were well taken cared for. The owner is kind and helpful as well. Laid back and casual. Thank you for everything.
Our 7 year went for a surf lesson today with Ricky. He was amazing with her. Very patient, knowledgeable, and she felt very comfortable with him during her very first surfing experience. Highly recommend!
Great little shack! I rented a board on a Sunday as it was one of the few places open. Great price and a nice longboard.
We booked this place at the recommendation of the concierge. I am rarely one to give less then five stars on any review however, this place deserves it.My sister and I booked a semi-private surf lesson for two-hours. When we first met our instructor, he had just gotten finished teaching the AM kids surf camp which I am sure was exhausting however, that was not an excuse for the way he treated us. We are both pretty athletic people and while we have never officially surfed before, we have both spent our entire lives growing up on the water. The surf instructor was very rude to both of us. He was very impatient and did not do a good job with the lesson on the beach, this caused us to take a little bit longer to get a hold of what he wanted us to learn. None the less, I caught the second wave and basically every one after that. Not to toot my own horn, but thats pretty good for the first time surfing! One example of the way I was treated was when I was paddling out to catch a wave my leg had fallen off the board. The instructor stopped and lectured me saying You realize like half your body is off the board, when half my body is off the board *proceeds to get on the board and imitate what Im doing*, I can feel it, dont you feel that man, come on. He also proceeded to tell us on multiple occasions that we werent listening to him (this was totally not the case and not at any point were we being unsafe), and humiliated us numerous times. My sister and I were there to have a good time, if I had not caught one wave during my time here I wouldnt of cared at all, the point was to have fun!The reason I didnt give less them 1 star is because the other workers we spoke with were friendly and I believe the reason he was so rude to us was because he had to deal with a surf camp right before our lesson. With that being said, that is still not an excuse for the way we were treated. They should have given him a break or had another instructor take our lesson.Overall, if you are in the area and looking for a beginner surf lesson, I would highly recommend going elsewhere. Our lesson was also not 2 hours as promised, more like 1 hour and 40 minutes.
I absolutely loved my experience at LahAina surf shack!!! Had a private lesson with Talvi. From the beginning, I was given amazing instruction and felt completely at ease to just have fun. Thats what surfing is about! I got personal guidance and was absolutely exhausted at the end of the two hour lesson. What I love about this company is that they are looking to the future generation of surfers and were holding lessons for the local kids to learn. In no way did that impact my private lesson - I was actually motivated by these amazing little kids shredding on surfboards next to me! Everything is included in your lesson including a rash guard and shoes. I also love that they have a personal photographer to capture your best surfing shots so you dont need to worry about having a friend on the beach to take pictures. You are taught to respect the Aina and I definitely do. Thank you for everything!!!!!
Very cool place, the staff is very passionate about surfing. Tricky Rick was our main instructor and I highly recommend him.
These guys are great. Cool people and taught me the right way to pop up. Chris, Lisa, Drew, Aina and the rest are fantastic. Took lessons two days and these people are talented. You will learn a lot very quickly when you visit this surf shack. Lisa gave us a cool history lesson on the walk down today as well.
The Google imagery shows Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy at this location. The building I rented from last year was below the old tattoo shop, 2nd building from Front St. Super cheap longboards rentals and grabbed some surf shirts & shoes that they borrow for free. Had a great time two days in a row. Surfed just to the south of the school.
Had a blast here, wish time would have allowed to go back a second time! Great location next to public parking, and when we showed Mike was very friendly and got us going right away. Our Surf Instructor Chyna was awesome. She did a great job going through everything and telling us what to look for, making us feel comfortable and making it an overall great experience. Just a great way to start the day
Great place and Awesome people! 6 kids and all of them had a blast!
Good surfing training and fair rates. Thanks!
Great surf shop. Aina was awesome and helped me with pointers to pop up and turn with the break. Good board selection. The place to surf. Thanks!!
