Very educational. To realize this was the first home ever built in Knoxville is amazing. To see how people lived back then and what their amenities were. There was an upper class with their candle chandalier and the two seater outhouse. Lol. I enjoyed the tour. Fun for the kids to see how tough they would have had it compared to today
Great place to visit. $10pp we just walked around it. Funny how its just our in the middle of city like it is
Great place closed for Thanksgiving. But lots of history.
Knoxvilles hidden historic gem! Knoxvilles first home is the site of so much of what was to become Knoxville! Tourists from around the world visit to learn about the colonial settlements, a huge gathering of native American tribes that came together to forge a peace treaty, and they have great year-round events like this Fire and Feast Dinner!! If visiting Knoxville, or if youre a resident who might have overlooked the fort, do yourself a favor and visit James Whites Fort!
Amazing historical site, it doesn’t take too long and they have really interesting artifacts and items to take a glance at how people lived in the past. Would recommend James White Fort to anyone who wants to learn some history.
I give this location based on how badly i was treated by Marble Spring main office & John sevier fram house. also how poor the tour guides are. i found only one tour guide to be excellent. you find out why on each review i do at all their locations. the gentlemen here unlike the other was nice and pleasant to talk to but really didnt give us any information about the fort unless we ask. to the best of my understand there no tour but he should of after welcoming us ask us if we needed to know anything about the site and maybe offer a few major points about the fort. but out of all marble spring site was the only one but one where i didnt have to deal with rudeness or the lack of respect for a paying customer.
Cool little place right in the heart of downtown Knoxville. We went with my littles class field trip so we got a personal tour with lots of interaction and explanation. Although I am glad we went and we enjoyed the experience its a place you wouldnt go to over and over. They did a great job with a whole heap of kindergarteners though.
Its a nice reconstruction of an early fort but is a farce as was not in this location nor did James White settle this land. It is simply set up for tourism and not historically correct. He purchased this land from Elisha Baker who was the first or one of the first settlers to Knoxville area.
Glad this historical site is still here almost smack dab in the middle of downtown. Its a very nice walk from Gay St. to visit the fort.
Fantastic preservation of period fort, buildings and furnishings. My wife and I stopped off on our way from Ohio to North Carolina and enjoyed our roughly 90 minute visit. It was eye opening to learn the history of the fort and see how the Knoxville settlers lived.
A wonderful retreat in the heart of the city. Amazing that it survived and is still downtown.
See a colonial America wooden stockade fort. Several of the structures are original.
Christmas is a great time to visit.
Beautiful place. Well preserved. I love the cabins
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Cool little place tucked away in our downtown. They had a little festival going on, so we checked it out. Lots of fun!
Like stepping back in time. I stopped by here while visiting the Knoxville area, and Im very glad I did. While this compound is essentially a museum, the very well-maintained, authentic structures and their contents really makes for a unique and highly interesting experience. Its very inexpensive to take a self-guided tour, and the gentleman who was there that day was exceptionally helpful and informative. Youll be provided a small booklet that has some more detailed information which helps to provide additional context and enriches the overall experience. Recommended
Great place for my middle school students to learn a little more about the history of our city!
A wonderful place to learn about the history of Knoxville and Tennessee.
While a little on cheesy side, it is rather nice to find someone many historic buildings in a metropolitan setting. Knoxville has done utself proud with fort, the original mansion, a couple other historical buildings to include the original Knox County courthouse!Fort was closed on Sunday 330p. But it offered glimpses if what was ( is?) A pretty cool place against the modern skyline.
I was surprised how nice this was. It was Statehood day at that, so there were a lot of folks dressed in character.
A great, quick look back in time! The gentleman at the desk was extremely friendly and helpful.
A touch of history that is convenient to downtown hotels with free parking. You can learn about the origins of Knoxville. $7 for adult admission open Monday through Saturday. Doesnt take to long to take in the compound and it is interesting to discover the early beginnings of this town
Wonderful experience for upper elementary through high school students. Can see in less than 2 hours. Very informative and clean.
A very interesting place, and a lot of city history here.
Have always enjoyed visiting here! Such a cool piece of history.
Such an amazing tour! And a witty tour guide.
Rolled up at 10:20 on a Saturday, and there was a sign saying they were out of office and would be back at 11. If your hours make it so the only time the average working person is physically capable of seeing your attraction is a Saturday, please staff the full Saturday hours. You hadnt even been open an hour when I got there.Came back later and paid. I received a packet of text on printer paper that I had to return before I left. It was pretty detailed, but not everything appeared as the paper said, presumably due to things being moved or taken away to be restored. You cant kill a lot of time here, but its reasonably educational.
Located right next to the woman’s basketball Hall of Fame Museum, this is an interesting attraction to kill some time while in Knoxville and get a small sense of 17th century American history. However, I don’t suspect you would spend no more than 1 hours or less here. It’s a cool place to visit once but never again.
Well reconstructed, and the people there are friendly. Statehood day was particularly fun.
Authentic historical setting and very informative.
At about 4:15-425 we pulled up. just as we were pulling up, some employee closed and locked the front door on us. there are still plenty of people in the parking lot.hours say closed at 5, so there is no reason for them to close now.even the plaque outside is incorrect. actually kind of glad they closed it.owner is also a jerk.
Took my grandkids they were really interested. After seeing the milk churn looms and such we had to weave and make butter!
I would definitely recommend you take an hour to go look around. Very nice, beautiful place to sit out on a bench and enjoy a nice day. The history is very present and it’s like jumping back in time :)
Cool location. Nice.histirical fort
Very nice old Fort. Its worth visiting as you can see how people lives back in the 18th century
Great local and American history, worth a visit.
It doesnt say it but you actually have to pay to get inside to see it
Great place to remember the past
Well preserved history within city limits.
Incredible. You could feel the history so strongly. The gardens are readily maintained. You cant resist being overwhelmed by how small and vulnerable it feels despite the stout wall. The people there were available and happy to get you started and answer any questions but you didnt feel hounded and were left to tour freely inside and out of the wall.
Excellent historical place to learn more about the very early days when Knoxville was just being founded. Self guided tours but office staff often advises and sometimes assists.
Took their Ghost walk of Knoxville . Had a great time. Love the Fort!
Great settlement
This is a reproduction fort on a different site than the original, furnished with antiques that are 100 years too new. Apart from that, it’s fine.
Very cozy and well laid out
Beautifully preserved and restored, with many original furnishings and tools. We were warmly welcomed by Robert.
This was so cool. A tiny little fort in the middle of the city. They had people in period dress, things displayed and the kids loved it.
Really cool place with some important local history.
I love places with history. The guide at the front desk was very nice and helpful.
Very cute place and very informative staff. A bit coyly for what they have but it was a nice historical place in Asheville.
Very cool place!
Most interesting. Small. Doesnt take long to tour. Nice staff. Worth the visit.
Charge high to see what?
Great historic site!
Not bad but would like to see it in better shape.
Halloween bash was a blast!
Who knew this little gem was in the heart of Knoxville?!
Hit the spot.
Love this historical site.
Historical 18th century settlement cabin . . .
SMH, however give it a visit. You might learn something new.
Need some updates it was alright
Beautiful land mark.
Really cool place to visit
Even volunteers should be on time. Waited and no one showed to open up. Guess well go somewhere where they care.
History
Not worth it
