This cemetery is actually pretty big in size in relation to all of key west. If you are not of fan of lizards, iguanas, etc, I would not come as there are little ones half the size of your hand up to the size of a small dog and they live underneath the graves and in the trees. Other than that it was interesting to take a 5-10 minute walk through and see it. There are graves a century to a century and a half old in there!

Its like walking through history going through the cemetery looking at the oldest styles looking at different symbols and signs and Colts religions very interesting

Really great old cemetery. See if you can find the grave of the man who lived to be 108 and lived 65 of those years as an honest man. The rest of his years were lived as a privateer! What stories he must have been able to tell.

This cemetery is so beautiful piece of history. Absolutely unique, doesnt look like a common American cemetery, as there are a lot of different religions mixed at one place.

Great place to find some funny headstone comments and quotes. Also, you can get ideas for baby names.

This was a nice place for a midday nap as a homeless man in Key West. The tourists only go to the portion of it that has a grave with a tombstone reading, I told you I was sick. The rest of the cemetery is quite peaceful and quiet and the local cops dont seem to patrol it very often so you dont have to worry about being abused by them. I recommend it to all homeless people seeking a little shade and rest during the middle of a hot, humid day.

This is a cool stop for unusual history in Key West with a self-guided tour. Free maps are provided at the entrance station and I would say dont go in without one! There are so many interesting facts and small stories within. Its a quiet, off-the-beaten-path place. Lots of iguanas hanging out as well. Park on a side-street, walk in, and when youre done, its not even that far a walk to get to the hubabaloo of Duval and Mallory Square!

Check with the Key West Chamber of Commerce and find out when there are guided tours done by the Historical Society(?) at the Cemetery...its a great history lesson on the place weve come to enjoy escaping to!

More people are in the cemetery than there are in Key West today. We have been through here before, and decided to come back through. Many beautiful grave markers give you just a small glimpse into KW history. Youre sure to find the names of KW families that will ring bells as to names in KW today (streets, locations, homes).Noticed some beheaded chickens this trip and figured people make sacrifices here. . . stopped one of the caretakers who confirmed that it happens all the time, yes maam, all the time.If you are into photography, this is a must-stop on your list of things to do.

Great old historic cemetary thats crawling with iguanas. A must see while visiting Key West and to pay respect to the dead. This place has a nice memorial to the sailors that paid the ultimate at the Battle in Havana Harbor on Feb. 15, 1898. The cemetary was relocated here long ago since its the highest point on Key West. Worth a visit. FYI its separated by religion so take some time, each section has its own uniqueness.

Its a must stop for anyone in Key West. It has so much history, and the biggest cemetery Ive ever seen before. Some of the markers are pretty old, which shows its been around for awhile. It is extremely hot in the summer time, but its worth it, and they have iguanas everywhere! One of best places to visit.

If your looking for a quiet and unusual place to stroll, The Key West Cemetery is it. You can get a free map at the main entrance. It will highlight the most talked about grave sites. If you go in the midday bring a hat and sunscreen. There is not much shade here for the living, but fun none the less. There are lots of iguanas as well.

This is a very clean Cemetery. There are two entrances, one on the corner of Passover Lane and Windsor Lane. And the other one is on Frances Street and Petronia Street.

Really enjoyed the cemetery. Not a whole lot of chickens around but kept hearing rustling near the graves. Was surprised by the iguanas scampering in and around tombstones.

Lots of history; interesting to see how much concrete and above-ground tombs are used. There is a unique area in memoriam to Cuban freedom fighters. Lots and lots of huge lizards and iguanas around, sunning themselves on tombs.

Fun to visit the Cemetery is pretty old.

Over here is where I met the love of my life. She’s been in the cemetery for over forty years now. Her skin so rugged, her body so skinny. What a beautiful woman she is. Every night, I lay with her under the stars.

On high ground, after storms in the 1800s washed away seaside cemeteries. The city sponsors guided tours of historic graves twice a year, but self-guided tours are available every day. Notably, a section for sailors killed in 1898 when the Maine exploded in Havanas harbor is still maintained by the Navy. Theres also a section dedicated to the martyrs of Cubas 1868 uprising for democracy. Some of the statuary and inscriptions (I told you I was sick, Im just resting my eyes) will give you a hint of how hallowed this place is to us. Its a lovely stroll through the islands history.

Interesting place to visit. So much to see and ponder and that was all before one of the caretakers graciously gave us a map with points of interest. I would recommend going in the early morning or early evening. There isnt a lot of shade and we went when it was quite warm. Sun hat or parasol would have been good. The iguanas are definitely a strange and creepy site as they dart in and out from under gravestones.

The Cemetery in Key West is a one-of-a-kind, only in Key west burial grounds. The graves are mostly above ground, done to prevent bodies from washing away in a hurricane. There are several unlikely grave markers around the grounds. The most famous being the I told you I was sick gravestone. Look for it in the south eastern corner, next to the Jewish section.

We took the self-guided tour and enjoyed it. It is a nice, relaxing place to visit - or was until a couple of huge iguanas skittered out of a tomb. That was creepy.

Beautiful and interesting. The few roads inside are narrow and dead end frequently. We went in early sept. The heat was unbearable without shade. Recommend plenty of water, sunblock and hat. Its a very large space to cover.

Wonderful, even if slightly rundown place to visit. The funny grave epitaphs make the hike worth it. Its also curiously quiet there.

The lodging here was quite exceptional

Theres serious stuff, such as a significant memorial to the victims of the USS Maine, and quirky stuff, like a gigantic conch-shaped headstone. Pick up a map as you enter the main gate.

There was so much history here. This is a must see and worth a walk through. R.I.P. Key West.

My wife and I recently stayed not too far from the cemetery and decided to take a walk through it on our first afternoon where we met a cat we called Stony due to the headstones. We walked about half of it and went on our way. Each night we wound up walking by the cemetery and hoped to see or hear something, but nothing of significance besides a single bang which sounded like two pieces of wood striking one another that sounded like it came within the cemetery, but who knows. I walked the remaining property before our departure back to Tampa. There is a lot of history and I would recommend it as a way to spend a morning or late afternoon. You know to kill some time.

MUST DO while in Key West. Take time to pay your respects and read the legendary Tombstones.

Being from New Orleans we are accustomed to historic cemeteries. We really enjoyed strolling through this one.

I enjoyed the solo trip I took through here, but what I enjoyed even more were all the responses I got on my Spirit Box at night as I would stand outside the fence . =D

Interesting place to walk around. The USS Maine monument is worth checking out.

Im not sure Im much of a tourist for cemeteries but this one has some famous (and infamous) residents, some witty epitaphs and its a welcome distraction from Duval Street. Dont forget to pick up a free map at the Margaret Street entrance.

Impressive.When youre going cemetry youll see different big trees and lizards under them. Also the tree at the gate of cemetry is nice.

Been dying to come here...... I was disappointed, the nightlife was dead. Whole area was a ghost town.

Walked through the cemetery 30 years ago...so just like to ride my bicycle by it...lots of repairs have been made and still are..it really needed some TLC..this historical cemetary has some unusual markers..like the one that says I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK.
