The Nature Center has great small exhibits of both taxidermy and live animals. One of the greatest assets is the Nature Rangers program through Prince Georges County. This is a great place for kids likely ages 2 to 10 or 11 maybe. Just down the road maybe .1 of a mile or so is a fantastic park too. So double win stop, science and outdoor activity. Hiking here looks to be pretty nice as well. I saw rangers and maintenance tending to trails.

Watkins is a great park with an awesome playground for the kids, a nature center with lots of cool Maryland native animals (as well as some other exotics) and a functioning farm with lots of great animals the young kids really love. It never seems overly crowded since it has lots to do!

Came here on a second grade field trip and was extremely impressed with the presentation! The staff member who gave it was engaging, helpful, and obviously liked kids. It was a wonderful experience for all the classes. The nature center is free to enter and has many birds and reptiles on display. The playground has a lot of fun things for all ages and kept the kids entertained for an hour. There are water fountains and bathrooms as well. We ventured a short way down a wooded trail which was well maintained.I look forward to coming back to coming back and exploring more!

Watkins Park is my favorite place to wander close to home. The Nature Center and farm are inviting spaces to see animals & insects up close that you wouldn’t come across every day. On my last visit I took my first ever tai chi class - free, outside, amazing. I got into a conversation with a little one as I left the park - his grandparents were telling him the history of the old carousel. I’ll stop here.

Nice nature center with a range of smaller animals; turtles, lizzards, snakes, frogs and birds. My kids liked the guess what it is boxes where you have to put your hands through a curtained hole in a box to feel and guess what is in it. And no, no live animals are in it... very helpful staff. My wife does not like snakes and they guided her to the other cages.

Watkins is such a cute place to bring kids. They have the playground, the farm, and the nature center. The nature center is closest to the playground and easily accessible from a path towards the back of the playground. Its a nice break from the playground in the heat or cold. The staff is nice and always to talk to visitors about the animals. The animals are rescues that cannot be released back into their homes because of injuries and such. They have some birds of prey, crows, and the cutest little owls you have EVER seen. The have a fish pond in the middle of the room. Kids love to look into it but you have to keep an eye on them because its a steep drop into water if they climb over the fence. They also have reptiles and amphibians. Apparently, they also do birthday parties here.

Review №31

Great place for kids to meet animals of the local forests: owls, raptors, snakes, frogs and turtles. With playgrounds nearby, its great to sneak in some educational activity here, as its also a learning center introducing people to ecology and environmental concerns. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and exhibits are well kept and only feature animals that were injured or abandoned. This nature center has been operating for over thirty years, and could use a facelift; while not unsafe in any way, this venerable institution deserves updating! Nature trails and campsites nearby

Great Park except all rules posted on signs are willfully ignored. So it was a surprise that theu finally closed the gates to the football field where the Park prohibits parking but the rules are flagrantly ignored and cars. Park is improving on rules. Took em 20 yrs and the rule violators brought it on themselves.

The nature center has many animals for people to see including turtles, snake, and Raptors outside. The staff are friendly and will answer any questions. It looks like the tree decor is under construction. Hopefully they will renovate because that decor has been there for many years. The nature center hosts many family events for all ages. If interested, the events are posted on the pgparks site.

Lots of animals on view. Nestled in the woods surrounded by wildlife. The park itself has plenty to do. Carousel, mini golf, big playground, and even a farm you can walk around and get up close to the farm animals. Its a good place to take your kids if you have any, or for yourself if you love nature and want to learn more. They also offer summer day camps.

Its great for young kids, not a lot of exhibits as the place is fairly small but it is also free. Critters inside include owls, and other larger birds; various snakes, lizards and frogs; fish turtles and a terrapin. Theres a nice place to sit and play (toddlers) or look at books. Interesting displays keep kids engaged. Be sure to check outside around the building where you can find several large birds like vultures, a viewing area for local wildlife, great hiking trails, and two ponds full of native creatures. Stroller and wheelchair accessible.

We love visiting here! Friendly and helpful Naturalist and a variety of things to do. We visit to see the animals and other activities. Just an FYI if you have a younger child that wants to work on a puzzle, I think they are ALL missing pieces. The shelves the childrens books and puzzles on need cleaned and I have seen a spider or two hiding out there. Not the reason we go, so still gets 5 stars.

The playground is awesome. You have the Nature Center, where you can rent the back room and host nature themed birthday parties, where they bring out the eagles and other animals that arent on display. They have a reading nook filled with nature themed books and they even have a petting zoo with animals located directly across.from the playground. So much for my little one to do on a Sunday afternoon.
