This is a place Mississippians should definitely visit. It was really detailed and enjoyable. I love learning about MS history especially Black history.

Great place to take the family to find out about African American

This is a place everyone needs to experience! Being a Mississippi native, I can honestly say this was one of the most important discoveries my wife and I made. Full of so much great history and facts.Any negative reviews are only here to discourage people from learning about the awesome black history that was made in Mississippi.Please, educate and appreciate.

The museum is awesome!!! There are new exhibits up since I last went in 2017. I really enjoy coming here. I learn something new everytime. This museum is for people of all ages. Not only do my children really like coming, but my husband as well. The Christmas party was nice. Some of the staff were a little upset because they were trying to close before 8 when the program was over and wanted to put up everything, but other staff allowed us to tour at our own pace as well as enjoy the refreshments that were being served. I think new people need to be over the serving next year. However, it was overall very nice! I will go back in the future.

A true historical treasure of Jackson! Loved their past exhibition on Mr. James Meredith and his journey to Ole Miss. Cant wait to see the new additions to the Africa to MS exhibition!

My friend and I visited the Smith Robertson Museum while in Jackson, Ms on a road trip. We had researched historical places in and around Jackson and this museum came up. Its not widely advertised and most locals we asked were not familiar with it. DO NOT LET THIS DETER YOU!!! This museum is a GEM and a MUST-SEE. It has numerous exhibits about the school and its namesake, Mr. Richard Wright (the author of Native Son), black life in Jackson during its heyday, black-owned enterprise(Dotty Cab fleet), a walk through model slave ship, a mini museum dedicated to Jacksons own Medgar Evers(civil rights activist) hand outs with black historical figures and little known facts.....AND SO MUCH MORE! The museum and the director Charlene Thompson are delightful plus admission price is only a mind blowing $7.

Smith Robertson Museum is a museum dedicated to the preservation of black history as well as the history of Jackson and the state. It was basically the first civil rights museum before the big one that we have now. It also showcases art also. Some that has to do with mississippi some not. I remember as a kid going there and at the beginning of the tour they used to have a very big picture of Leontine Price that she donated from her private collection. It was a very interesting museum.

Visited back in MayA very good museum. Highly informative and educational, and presented in a very engaging manner.Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Jackson; you can easily spend a couple of hours here.Quick thing to point out is that we had to ring the doorbell to be let in. If the door for whatever reason is shut, its well worth doing that!

This building was once a thriving school for African American children. Author, Richard Wright, is one of their famous alumni. Displays include a brief history of slavery, the Great Migration, and Civiil Rights. For me the most powerful sights were the Medgar Evers exhibit and the Slave Ship. Seeing the bloody clothing of Everss neighbor hanging on a fence really brings home the lack of justice available for African Americans. Walking through a cramped and darkened slave ship was eerie and impactful. The staff is rightfully passionate about their museum and their subject matter. Take the time to visit this hidden gem!

We really enjoyed this manageable sized and informative museum. Very educational! Good overviews of slavery in the south, the civil rights movement in MS, and first hand accounts of how freed black southerners, survived, struggled to obtain an education, or moved north for better opportunities for their children.

A really accurate, and fantastically clear account about the African-American history in Mississippi. It talks about issues of slavery, the importance of the Afro-American voice, the injustice in the system, important figures during the Civil Rights movement, and more! Everyone should come and experience all that this museum has to offer.

Wow!! Ive been to other states and countries and have had visits to many museums. Never have I experienced African American Culture and the journey in the way that I did at this museum. I will make it one of my favorite places to visit. Theres more to learn.

A good museum reflecting African American culture and the struggle for civil rights. There are several engaging displays and collections. Well worth your time to check out.

Exhibits are smart, experiential and visceral. You can step inside the dark, crowded hold of a slave ship or sit on the porch listening to Medgar Everss parents tell their stories. A VERY important museum to visit at this time when white supremacy is resurging in politics and KKK violence is on the rise!

I live in Jackson, and I visited the museum, Friday, March 13, 2015. The experience was breathless. The Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center is one of Jacksons great wonders. Tourist from around the world have gone through those doors. Every student in JPS should be required to take a field trip there every year. This is great site to take your grandkids.
